GROSVENOR DNA Project

The GROSVENOR DNA project is looking for male descendants of any of the various GROSVENOR families who immigrated to America since it's founding. Goals are to discover:

1. How many different common male ancestors are associated with the GROSVENOR surname.

2. How are your GROSVENOR ancestors related to other families with the GROSVENOR surname.

3. How are the different GROSVENOR family lines related.

4. Are all GROSVENORs from an ancestral country related, or are there many different families with the name GROSVENOR.

5. Can a connection between the GROSVENORs from one country and the GROSVENORSs from another be made.

6. Which GROSVENOR researchers should be collaborating because they share a common ancestor.

You can contact me at dglennw@charter.net or go directly to the project at http://www.familytreedna.com/surname-search-results.aspx?sTy....

David G.
Good luck, I hope you trace it for sure. My last Grosvenor search yielded a professional ancestry chart for Bush Presidents. I already knew my wife was an 11th cousin to first lady Barbara (Pierce) Bush via a family line of "Elkinton" but it also has Grosvenor's in it as well. I think you're probably of royal blood lines. I shall now think of you as "Sir David". Here's the link with Bush/Grosvenor's. See ya

http://www.wargs.com/political/bush.html
It's too long a story to go through but Elizabeth's father Richard Grosvenor showed up in Westmoreland Co, PA around 1802 (first documented evidence) and died there in 1813 leaving five children, the first three, including Elizabeth, by a first wife, Margaret Graham, according to family tails(she has never been located or documented). Elizabeth's brother, John, is the line I'm descended from. The family tail is that Richard was from the well to do Grosvenors of London, somehow made it to America and served in the Revolutionary War on our side as a drummer. Turns out there was another Richard Grosvenor in Northumberland Co, PA at the same time who moved married a Heltman and moved to Ky where he died in 1819. HE has a Pension File at the NARA which shows he was the drummer in the War, not my ancestor.
Lots of people have worked this over the last 40 years, including me. I seem to be the only one who sees the family tail as questionable. Several DAR applications were approved with no more evidence than I have seen. There is no evidence found to connect the two Richards - just speculation. Anyway, I hope to have this all up on my web site on of these days.

Yes, you did say something about them being just down the road. Based on my experience with my wife's background, I'm more inclined to believe your wive's tale is TRUE. When you plug in searches for Elizabeth Grosvenor born around 1805, all the results come up as English Census and English family trees. By the way, if you go to www.ancestry.co.uk you can log onto the British version of Ancestry using your regular log on if you have one. There's an Italian version too but it's all in, yes, Italian !! Anyway, I say I'm inclined to believe it because my wife's line were Oxford educated mining engineers who got married in Warwickshire England and left almost immediately for Denver, Colorado and up to manage the gold/silver mines in 1880's. I suspect the lack of Grosvenor tracks from Elizabeth backwards is for the very same reason. It'll be great if you can make the jump across the Atlantic because the English records are good and many times lead to royal family links. I was just tickled to find that paragraph about Sarah marrying William McKinney mentioning Elizabeth (Grosvenor) Poulson. T. T.

Terry,
Thank you for doing all the research. I don't know if I mentioned that I was born and still live in Walla Wallla, only 15 miles or so from Waitsburg. Elizabeth Grosvenor being from an "old (or ancient)English family line" is a family tradition (old wife's tail) that has never been proved, though many have tried. It could be true but from my research it is still only wishful thinking. Thanks again for the help. David

Hi David, I made some more progress on your Grosvenor corner. Hammered out some more names and such following your lead. As discussed had Elizabeth Grosvenor marrying Thomas Poulson 25 Jan 1830. They have children John, Sarah and Salena. They all end up in Waitsburg, Walla Walla, Washington. I noticed that in the 1880 census Elizabeth Poulson lists her fathers place of birth as England. While tracing Elizabeth's daughter Sarah Poulson I found she married William McKinney and they had children, Frank, Elmer, Virgel and Emma McKinney. If you Google "McKinney" and "Walla Walla" you'll come back with a biography on William McKinney. It read as follows and mentions that Sarah's mother, Elizabeth Grosvenor, was from an old English family line:

From “History of Washington: the evergreen state, from early dawn to…., Volume 1”

McKinney, William, farmer, of Waitsburg, was born in Warren County, Ind, in 1836. His father, William McKinney, was an Ohio farmer; his mother Anna (Walter) McKinney, being a native of Pennsylvania. Firth in a family of six children, young McKinney was educated in Oregon and Missouri. He crossed the plains in 1845 with his parents, who located in Hillsboro, Ore. The journey extending over a period of six months, was attended with all the dangers and privations peculiar to the overland trip at that early day, and the pioneers were more than thankful when it was concluded. Upon reaching manhood Mr. Mckinney removed to Washington, located in Walla Walla County, and engaged in packing and stock raising. In 1855 he volunteered as an Indian fighter, in which dangerous pursuit he continued until the advent of the regular troops. Returning to Oregon in 1856, for a period he occupied himself with various pursuits, but finally settled at Waitsburg as a farmer. He was married in 1865 to Miss Sarah Poulson, a daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Poulson, a lady descended on her father’s side from an ancient English family. They have four children. Mr. McKinney is a stockholder in the S.W. Smith Company, an important commercial enterprise, owns a city home and a valuable ranch of four hundred acres, is a Democrat in politics, and takes great interest in the public schools, to which and the Washington Academy he has made considerable donations. Mr. McKinney is widely known and generally esteemed for his many good qualities.

When you look at the www.findagrave.com memorial # 79655801 for Thomas Poulson in Fulton County, Illinois, it is posted by Mr. David G.
David, thanks for the info. I'll add the girls to Thomas Poulson and your 2nd Great Grandaunt. Looks pretty much like you found Thomas Poulson's final destination. As for Washington, who knows. A chunk of my closest bunch left Illinois and went to Seattle around 1900. It was Reason Benjamin Thompson and his family. His wife Adelia Sturm was also from the Princeville, Illinois area near Peoria. Must have been giving land away up there or something. We'll have to put in one of the requess for a photo of the tombstone at the cemetery where Thomas is located. Later.

Thanks for the information, Terry. Thomas' second wife, Elizabeth Grosvenor, is a 2nd great-grandaunt. They had three children, John, Sarah and Salena. I also had Thomas's death as 2 May 1862 in Fulton Co, IL. I found a Sarah McKinney, of the right age & birth location, living in Waitsburg, Walla Walla County, WA in the 1870, 1880 and 1900 census. They also show her mother, Elizabeth, also of the right age and birth location, living with Sarah and her husband. Elizabeth's death is recorded there in 1902. How they made the jump from IL to WA is anybody's guess. Interestingly, Waitsburg is only about 30 minutes from where I live.
David

Well here I'am, 10 years late and a dollar short but this is what I know. Thomas Poulson is the son of William Billy Poulson and Elizabeth Reed. The family originates out of Maryland/Delaware area. They are a peripheral family to my own with similar histories. Thomas married into my Thompson Family on 9 sep 1816 in Perry Township, Wayne County, Ohio. This can be seen in my "Descendants of John and James Thompson" tree at Ancestry.com whereas Thomas Poulson married Elizabeth Thompson. I have to go set my tree to "Public" again, had it on private for awhile. Anyway, a guy living a few farms away from them when they were briefly in Columbiana County, Ohio named Johnathan Skyhawk (Anglicization of Dutch family name of VanScoyac) was somehow involved in the divorce of Thomas Poulson and Elizabeth Thompson some 13 years later on 12 Sep 1829. If my memory serves me correctly, Ms. Judy Cassidy found the divorce papers for this marriage at the Millersburg Court House which is to the south of where the Thompson clan was centered in Fredericksburg, Wayne county,, Ohio. I think Judy even put that in her book. They had 4 children from that marriage. Eliza, Martha, Hannah and Harriet. After the divorce, Thomas Poulson marries Elizabeth Grosvenor on 25 Jan 1830. most likely in Holmes County, Ohio, could be in Wayne County as lots of the family over there. There is an 1830 census for Thomas Poulson in 1830 Holmes County. There is a Thomas Poulson in the 1880 census of the right age and origins (Maryland) living over in Greensburgh, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania with a daughter named Mary born 1833. That could be Thomas, now shown as a widower living with possible child from marriage with Elizabeth. Let me know if you find out any more. Let me go look to see if that reference to the Thomas Poulson's divorce is in Judy's book. Just a minute....Yes, page 211 of "The Dorland Enigma Solved", ""Thomas sued for divorce from Elizabeth on 22 May 1828 and 16 Feb 1829, the charge;adultrey with Jonathan Skyhawk/VanScoyac. Final decree 12 Sep 1829" Hope this helps. let me know if you find any further traces of them. Pure coincicence that I should see this message only a week after it got posted. I just happen to be revisiting that part of my tree. Terry

My info said that she was born 16 Sep 1800 in Mansfield, Tolland, CT I had her father as a William Grosvenor from Tolland, Ct in a 1790 Census. I hoping that what you have provided is correct. It will open up new doors for me.
My g,g, grandmother Sarah Carpenter Grannis is the daughter of Mary Grosvenor and Evander Grannis, she along with two of her sisters married Grannis brothers in Wales Ctr, Eire, NY. I recently found a pedigree chart on the family search site that shows the same info that you have. Did you find this info here. If not where did it come from?
My (John) Grosvenor (born 1/2/1640/41) came here in abt 1660-1672 from The Friars, St. Leonard Parish, Bridgenorth, Shropshire, England and the name was spelled Gravenor, most probably not related to the Grosvenors of England.

We'll keep searching. Went to England in 07---took photos of Grosvenor Square and many street signs with our name on them. Went to the village where my maternal 12-greats grandfather and mother emigrated from in 1643---it was in Kent in the south of England. Looks like the Grosvenors came from the north in Shropshire.

I found Benjamin in the 1880 census and his kids and or wife in the 1900, 1910, 1920 and 1930 census and 1900-1930 all say England. I have 17 Benjamin Grosvenors in my file and he is the only one who was born around 1848-1852 and died abt 1882. I have been trying to find his parents for years but no luck either, would love to have the answer.

Since his children were born in l873 (Louis), 1875 (John) and later,Wauconda, IL, he should be in the census records of northern IL prior to 1880. He was married to Mary Jane Gray in Walworth County Wis around 1871. She was from Gray's Lake IL, also a northern IL town. Always wondered if there was a connection to the Michigan branch of the Grosvenors, since it is close, but found no connection.

Never heard that from Grandpa John or Aunt Daisy. He also had a dtr named Lottie, but she died in childhood. It is possible that he was born in England, of course, since I have no data disproving it. Never heard that he had an English accent, but then, the children were very young at his death. Thanks for the reply.

From the census of his 3 children, John F., Louis B. and Daisy and his wife they all state he was born in England. In the 1 census he is listed in it says unknown. Since I can not locate him before 1880, I am guessing he probably was born in England.

I can only trace back 3 gens from myself due to a mysterious great grandfather, Benjamin Smith Grosvenor, who died in Elgin IL in 1882. He married Mary Jane Gray in about 1872 but did not tell her where his parents were, but told her how to contact them in event of his death. She chose not to do so on his death--so we don't know where he came from. My grandfather, John Ferdinand Grosvenor, born in 1875 died 1958, was identical in looks to Gilbert H Grosvenor of the Natl Geo....uncanny resemtlance. So assume that they were cousins of some sort, but no proof.

He was married twice, all of his children listed as born in Minot ME and of his second wife. Our connection goes back to Ebenezer Grosvenor b 1684, your line from Capt.
Mary C. Grosvenor

I recently learned that Mary C. Grosvenor widow of Thomas married Uriah P. Townsend 12/1866. I find Mary C. Townsend on 1880 census for Athens County with 3 of her Grosvenor children; but no mention of Uriah Townsend. Does anyone have any information about this marriage/divorce/what happened?

Thanks for your time. Mary Lou

This line was in Athens County, Ohio. Not certain where the line originated. Mary C Grosvenor (nee Wyatt) married Thomas J Grosvenor in 1847 and they had 7 children. That's about all that I know of this line.
