RE: My grandmother was Dorothy Ellen Grue, she married Theodore Jackson Sams, my grandfather, her parents were James Grue and Goldie Tope. As far as I know James Grue was from Ontario Canada. If anyone has any information on these people please let me know. Thank You

My info seems to lead more in the Tope end of the family. My grandmother was Goldie's sister. Her name is Clara Tope. She died when I was young. Goldie's parents were Cora Ellen Clewell and Douglas Alvin Tope. Cora separated from Douglas and later married Robert E Groce. I haven't found much of Cora, but Douglas Alvin Tope's parents were Eli Tope and Margaret Bower. I have a picture of Douglas Alvin's head stone, my grandmothers Clara's headstone, who's name changed to Stout when she married my grandpa, and I believe I have the Grue's headstones as well. I will have to check. If you are interested let me know.

Also, if you have found anything out since your post, I'd appreciate anything that you have. As I have said, my grandmother died when I was a little girl, so I never got to talk to her about her family. My information has all been from digging and searching. I am interested in pictures and information. Thanks so much!

Hey Great uncle Art! This is Katherine Hogenson (my family calls me by my middle name Amelia). I am John Hogenson and Kathy Singletary's daughter. Selma Storbo (Hogenson) was my grandmother and I believe we are related through one of her many sisters. I am very interested in finding out more information about my family tree. I hope all is well with you and your family. My mother died in 2004 (I believe that was the year) and my dad, John Hogenson is still healthy and kicking. Also, I am not sure how much you know about our part of the family; but just so you know, my sister, Sarah, and my brother, John, are both doing great as well. They both have kids now. I am the baby in the family (only 20 years old) and my husband and I do not have children yet. I hope to hear from you. I am doing a test trial on ancestry.com so if you reply after my trial has expired please feel free to reach me at my email ameliacrooms@yahoo.com. Also, anybody else out there that may be looking for more information just send me an email. Thank you and hope all is well.

Don't know how the rules work on these postings but it may be easier for you to email me directly: gita_gill@hotmail.com and I'll reply with the scanned pages. I'm so glad my Grandma Geneva gave us the little booklet, which is so cool with photos of the family and some of their homes through history!

This is an old thread, so hopefully you are still accessing it. Maybe you've even found what you are looking for, if not, I have a copy for "Historical Record of the Thore Grue Family" written by Nels Grue of Camrose, Albert (near Armena) in 1978. He was the uncle of my grandmother, Geneva Grue (her maiden name). Let me know if you are interested. Cheers!

I believe I found the information while in Prescott looking for information on the burial site of my gr-gr-gr-granfather, Ouisande (Lewis) Grue whow was buried in Sandy Hill cemetery. I thought that this cemetery was in Prescott but have since found out that there is another cemetery of the same name somewhere in North Augusta Twp, Grenville which I have yet to locate.
Heather

Hi Gary
My name is Judith(Grew)Powers. My father was Lewis H. Grew, and his father was Ernest Grew who was the son of Lewis B. Grew. I vaguely remember your Mom Edna, as I was too young, but I do remember going to your Grandmothers in Lyon Mountain as a little girl. I went to school with Tommy Kline and Dale Kline, Royden Kline, and Phyllis. There is another girl which was much younger than myself, and her name escapes right now. The family was always close to all of the Klines. I was just going thru some old pictures that have been passed down to me, and saw pictures of your Mom as a young girl and some of her and her family, you were probably in one of them as a baby or young child.

The info that I have about G-Great Grandfather John B. is taken from his bible which my cousin Roddy Davis' son has now. I know he was born in Ontario Canada, but there is also some info that someone from ancestry sent to me about England, but I have not been able to verify that yet. According to records in the bible, he married Elizabeth Kiernan who was born Aug.28, 1831, on May 25, 1847.

Today that would be in the Grenville County area of Ontario.
Regards
Heather

Hi Judith
My name is Gary Arnold. My mothers name was Anne/Edna (Kline) Arnold. My Grandmother was Della (Grew) Kline. My Great Grandfather was Lewis B. Grew and my Great Great Grandfather was John B. Grew. I saw that you are showing John B Grew's place of birth as England but the record shows him married to a different woman than his wife Elizabeth. Do you have some information that shows that his first wife passed away. I had thought that John B was born in Ontario. Thanks

I wish I had more information to add for you. My father told me of this story as the boy that died was his uncle. My dad has since died. My son is now working on our family history and this is how I ran across your posting.

In our research if we come up with anything on this, we will let you know.

Terry Prestlien

Hi Betty,

Nice to hear from you. Just thought I'd let you know we will be celebrating Aunt Iris' 90th birthday this year. The get-together is on April 18, 2009, in the afternoon. I guess it's too far for you to come, but you may like to send her a card. My best to you and your family. Would you let Donna know about the birthday? Thanks.

Nancy

GERUE or GERU, QUE>Brockville, ON >NY; names include Louis, Moses

It may only be coincidence, but a member of my Gerue family married in Brockville in 1856 at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church. I have never been able to determine origins of her ancestors and am posting here in case there are connections. Here is the story:

According to a 1967 handwritten family history called The DeYoung Line and Lives, a Canadian named Louis or Lute Geru/Gerue, born c. 1804, married Rose Hamilton, whose father was from Ireland. On her daughter's death certificate, Rose's name is listed as Mary Rose Hamilton. They were said to have married at Brockville in about 1824. Rose died in the 1860s and is buried at Brockville. Louis was recorded as having died in 1876 at age 72 and is supposed to be buried at Redwood, Alexandria, Jefferson, NY (no stone). Many people are buried there with no headstones.

Their children were:
Christopher b. circa 1825, lived near Valleyfield, Quebec
Eliza b. c. 1827, lived near Valleyfield, Quebec
Moses b. c. 1830, lived near Valleyfield, Quebec
Alexander b. c. 1833, removed to Port Huron, Michigan
Lucie 1835-30 Apr 1904 m. Louis Jerome, Palermo, Oswego, NY
Catherine b. 29 Oct 1839 Williamstown, Ontario (more)
Jeremiah b. 12 Aug 1843 Valleyfield, Quebec (more)

As above, Catherine married Charles Dion (later DeYoung) in Brockville on 22 Sep 1856 by Rev. Oliver Kelly. Her name was recorded in the church record as Catherine Girouard, child of Giroir. Witnesses were Jeremiah Giroir and Lu--- (page torn, father or sister?). In 1871 they removed to Hammond, Saint Lawrence, NY and in about 1881 to Alexandria Bay, Jefferson, NY.

Jeremiah Gerue also removed to Jefferson county, NY and lived in Plessis (Alexandria), Leray and the small town of Philadelphia. He married Adaline Whitney Denie and had a daughter, Stella Gerue, who married Herbert Keller and had three daughters. They were Pearl Keller Kenfield, Ina Keller Klock, and Gladys Keller. According to the DeYoung family history, Jerry first married Clarissa Hibbard, but there is no second source to verify this. Jerry was a mail and freight carrier and stage driver. The farm where he lived at Browns Corners in Alexandria NY still stands.

Catherine Geru DeYoung outlived her husband by over forty years and died in 1925. She was my grandmother's grandmother. We have several photographs of Catherine as well as some old tintypes of persons who may be some of her siblings. All are unlabeled. We have never been able to determine the origins of this family.

I have information on the Grue family from the Grenville County region of Ontario. William J. Grue and his wife, Mary Vincent appear in the 1880 census for Tulare Cty., California, apparently they moved there from the Brockville area. I have the registration information for their marrrige taken from the microfiche of the Archives of Ontario.
Wm. J. Grue, son of Peter Grue and Alice Gallagher married Mary Vincent, daughter of Hugh and Mary Vincent, on July 1, 1878 in Brockville at the Methodist Church of Canada. They had a son Wellington I. Grue born June 25, 1879 in Brockville, Ontario.
Wm. J. was a brother to my great grandmother, Lucinda Grue Brayman.
You mention W. I. Grue married Mary Vincent and had the listed children above. I don't have information much beyond W.I.'s birth so can't say if these were his children or not, but I do know that Mary Vincent was his mother. Perhaps you have some information that might enable us to work together to straighten this out. Heather

I have a book "Edwardsburgh Township History" by Edwardsburg Historians, publisher Henderson Printing Inc., Brockville - it names a Harvey Coughtry as a charter member of the newly formed fire department (1951) for Edwardsburgh Township. The Ontario Genealogical Society (OGS) online is a good source to try for info.

I am sorry to hear of Bobby's passing, though I didn't know him well he was a friend of my parents, he was always very friendly towards me. Maybe you can shed some light here for me as so far my searching has gone nowhere. Do you know any of the Coughtry family of Spencerville? My Uncle Monroe and Aunt Lorraine may still be alive, they lived in town just up the street from the post office. Also, my step mother Hilda? I have lost touch with all of them. Thanks, Wayne
