Hi, which part of Ireland, one of my relatives, Edward Guest b 9 Jan 1808 Belfast - approx 1861 India (not sure which part, but definitely had been in Bangalore at some point as that is where he was married), has become a stopping point for us, there seems to be no records for him. Do you have any links/info?

Thanks,
Luke.
Hi, my name is Graham. Hansen from Balclutha, but now living in England, Alnwick area of Northumberland, my father was Thomas Maker Hansen. Looking through the posts here, see there has been quite a few threads to a Margaret Maker and a William Guest, who I persume came from from Devon to Balclutha.
Just trying to tie up loose ends, to try and work out the family tree. I know William, John and George Guest went to New Zealand and Balclutha. I am not a member of Ancestory.com, so do not know how to make contact. Anything you have to point me in the right direction will do.
Thanking you in advance. Graham,M.Hansen

I have Margaret's copy of what I think is the acceptance it shows the Colonial Dames verification of their information back to the Revolution. I don't have her membership number, I have my great grandmothers (they joined together)- please write back I assume we must be cousins or you wouldn't be interested.

Hi Natalie
I've traced Joseph E. Guest and his possible parents, Edwin and Jane, in the censuses. If you'd like them, just email me and I'll send the images of the censuses. Seeing as you're beginning to research your tree, and therefore in the early stages, it's best to talk to as many rellies of the older generation that you can, and get the birth, marriage, and death certificates to make sure that you're following the right line. It's highly likely that Joseph's parents were Edwin and Jane, but to be sure it would be a good idea to get Fred's birth certificate, and then Joseph Ernest Guest's birth certificate (to make sure the parents details, and occupations match etc). I haven't got Edwin Guest in my tree as such, yet, but that's not to say that he doesn't connect with my Guests, if you know what I mean. Ongoing research needs to be done, and the more of us Guests researchers that do it, the better! :D Do let me know if I can help in any other way.

Regards
Rachel

Hi Natalie

I see your granddad on the birth index for the first quarter of 1921, mother's maiden name 'Dryland'. Then there's a marriage in 1916, first quarter (ie registered Jan-Mar) in Chester, between Mildred Dryland and 'Joseph R. Guest' (not Joseph E. Guest). But when I looked at the image from the register, it actually said 'Joseph E. Guest' (so must be a transcription mistake on findmypast's website). I wonder what his middle name is?...He should be on an 1911 census somewhere...do you know what Joseph's occupation was, or how old he was when Fred was born, or anything... I can search for you on Findmypast for info. Will keep searching my end.
: )
PS: my direct email is rachel.shelley@gmail.com - if it's easier for you contacting each other directly

Hi there
I've only just started researching my family tree so haven't gone back that far at all...however my name is Natalie Guest and I live in a village called Penyffordd, Flintshire. My grandfather was Fred Guest and he was born in Hawarden flintshire but lived in Chester, Cheshire.

I've been reading your posts and noticed that you mentioned an Elizabeth Rowlands...my grandfather Fred Guest actually married a Claudia Elziabeth Rowlands who was from Chester, Cheshire. Her parents were Fred Rowlands and Frances Lawler (both from Chester)

Surely our trees must cross paths somewhere!

Natalie

Guest family of North Carolina

In searching for the first records of the Guest/Guess/Gist family in North Carolina I find there are tax records for 1762 that show there was a Moses "Gist" and a William "Gist" in Rowan County, N.C. These same individuals were still in Rowan County, N.C. for the 1767 Tax rolls. Then in the 1768 tax roll, William is identified as "William of John Gist".

I figure this William is the same one who later shows up in the Wilkes County, N.C. records and he is the one who has the sons, Moses Guest and William Guest Jr., who fought in the Rev. War and who drew pensions for it.

Now the Moses Gist (Guest) who shows up in the 1762 and 1767 tax records is too old to be the son of William who shows up in those same tax records since that Moses Guest was not born until sometime around 1750. I'm thinking that this William and Moses Gist were brothers and sons of the John Guest and Maria De Boa who show up in the New Jersey Dutch Reformed Church records. Church records show that they had a son named Moses Guest who was christened in that church on August 20, 1730. The William Guest Sr. who is found in North Carolina records would also be of the appropriate age to be a son of this John and Maria Guest.

I have seen family trees here on Ancestry.com tying Capt. Moses Guest to his father, William Guest Sr. and back to the John and Maria Guest of New Jersey, but I have not seen any proof as to how they came up with that last family tie.

I descend from the Moses Guest who died in Grundy County, TN and to this point we have been unable to identify exactly who his parents were. We know he was born in what later became Guilford Co, N.C. in 1766. We know who the children of William Gist/Guest were, so that seems to leave us with the Moses Gist/Guest who shows up in the 1762 tax rolls as being the most likely person to be the father of Moses Guest of Grundy County, TN. We know from a statement that the Grundy County Moses gave on behalf of Samuel Isaacks Rev. War Pension application that Moses Guest of Grundy had moved with his father to Wilkes County, N.C. We also know that he traveled to Franklin County, GA and into Pendleton District, S.C. where the other Guest family members are known to have lived.

Everything seems to point to Moses Guest of Grundy County, TN being closely related to William Guest Sr. and his descendants which include Capt. Moses Guest of Wilkes County, N.C. and Kings Mountain fame.

Does anyone have any documents or information on the Moses Gist/Guest who shows up in the 1762 and 1767 Rowan County, N.C. tax records? Is this the Moses Guest b. 1730 to John and Maria Guest of New Jersey? I'm thinking this Moses is the missing link to many of the Guest family who moved into North Carolina and pre-Tennessee and whose descendants have had such a difficult time figuring out and proving who their Guest ancestor was.
Re: George GUEST, 1681 to America

I am in the process of doing a little research on this George Guest family and I found a link between him and the John Guest who settled in New Jersey.

On the internet there is a book titled "Monument to Joseph Warren" that was apparently published in 1894. One article found within that book seems to focus on the Guest Family and specifically on a Henry (Henrick) Guest who built a home in New Brunswick, NJ. Henry died at his home in 1815 at the age of 89. The article goes on to talk about Henry's son, Moses Guest, who was a Captian in the Militia during the Rev War and was instrumental in capturing one of the British who had terrorized the Northern Colonies. This Capt. Moses Guest went on to sail extensively and he kept a journal of his travels as well as being known for writing poetry. Capt Moses Guest was born Nov. 7, 1755 in New Brunswick, NJ and died March 22, 1828 in Cincinatti, OHIO. The statement within this book that ties George to Henry is the statment concerning the Guests being an old Philadelphia family, his grandfather, John Guest, said to have built the first house in the Quaker City on the "Front", known as the famous "Blue Anchor Tavern".

If you look at the records of the Old Dutch Reformed Church in New Jersey you will find references in Dutch to a John Guest and his son, John Guest (Jan Janse Van Geste) who married 1st to a Susanna Aliee April 17, 1715 and 2nd to a Maria De Boa about 1724. I found Dutch Reformed Church records showing that John and Maria Guest are recorded as having a son Hindrick (Henry) Guest b. 1727, and a son, Moses Guest b. 1730. John may have had 8 children by these two wives.

From this George, John and Henry Guest information it appears that the line of descent looks in part like this:
1. George Guest came to Philadelphia, PA ~ 1681
2. John Guest
3. John Guest
4. Henry Guest b. 1727 d. 1815 and Moses Guest b. 1730
5. Moses Guest b. 1755 NJ d. 1828 Ohio

Check out this link for information on Henry and his son Capt. Moses Guest: http://www.archive.org/stream/talesofourforefa00mcpi/talesof...

Re: Moses Guest buried in Eastland, TX

Who was this Moses Guest (Sr.) of Grundy County, TN and in turn his son, Moses Guest (Jr.) of Eastland County, TX related to? Based on the written and signed statement that Moses Guest Sr. gave on behalf of Samuel Isaacks Rev War Pension application, I have a strong feeling that they were closely related to the Capt. Moses Guest of Kings Mountain fame. In that statement he tells where he was born and some of the places where he had lived. He mentions his father, but does not state his name. He said that a few years after he was born, that his family moved near the "Forks of the Yadkin" (River). If you look at old maps of NC you will find these forks located in Wilkes County, NC just to the west of what was then Mulberry Fields, present day Wilkesboro, NC. The forks are now under the waters of the W. Kerr Scott Reservoir. This is where various Guest families lived at the time of the Rev War, including Capt. Moses Guest. He goes on to state that the family later moved down into South Carolina, the location where those same various Guest families moved, and he goes on to say that Samuel Isaacks lived in Franklin County, GA, also the location where Capt. Moses Guest finally settled and is now buried. His travels fit too closely with those of William Guest and the Capt. Moses Guest family not to somehow be related to them. The problem is, I have yet to discover any written statement or proof in any of the Guest records that would show exactly how he fit into that family. I'm thinking that there is an undiscovered Uncle to Capt. Moses Guest that has somehow been omitted from the Guest family. This Uncle would be the father to Moses Guest Sr. of Grundy Co, TN.

As far as any family relationship to Nathaniel Gist goes, I don't believe there is any claim or proof that Capt. Moses Guest or his father was related to Nathaniel Gist either.

You can't find a connection because there isn't one. Moses Guest of Eastland County, TX is the son of Moses and Dorcas Guest of Grundy County, TN. They show up living next to each other in the early records of Warren, Coffee and Grundy County Tennessee. The spot where they were located was in all three locations because the counties changed with the formation of Coffee and then Grundy County. The probate records of Moses Guest's will names all of his children, including his son Moses.

I am a descendant of Moses and Dorcas Guest and I have searched far and wide trying to discover who Moses parents were to no avail. Anyone claiming to know the parents of Moses Guest Sr. is currently doing so without any evidence to support that claim. Note: Moses Guest Sr. knew how to write his name as is evidenced by his signature on his written statement given on behalf of Samuel Isaacks Rev War Pension Claim. It was the other record keepers who varied the spelling to reflect the name they thought they heard.

I have tried for many years and have been unable to find a connection. Are your sources from the NARA or family bible or? I have tried the archives several times but cannot find a way to connect. You can find out some about Sequoya's family but the archives are so hard to search through I can't find a connection. Any help

Occording to Goodspeeds writings for Madison County Arkansas it says
GOODSPEEDS' - MADISON COUNTY, ARKANSAS

page 422

[p.422] In the fall of 1829 William King, Charles Burney, Turner Hamblet, Thomas Rogers, William Adair, Lemuel Rogers and Benjamin F. King,of Alabama, came in a colony to the valley. They found here one settler, Leonard Koker, who had come the preceding year and cleared off three acres. He was in charge of a large drove of cattle owned by planters in the Arkansas River valley. He sold his improvements to Turner Hamblet, the son in-law of William King. The latter settled near the oldcamp ground; William Adair, where Mr. McCracken now lives. The first white child born in the valley was William Henderson Burney, son of Charles and Mary (King) Burney. In addition to those already named therewere living in the valley in 1832 one Melton, on the confines of civilization down the river; Manuel Clements, Samuel Durham, who came in 1830; Thomas Rodgers, by whom the site of Kingston was owned; Eli Sweden, who gave to Sweden Creek its name; Jeremiah Combs, from Warren County, Tenn; Garrett Lane, from Illinois, who came in 1832; James Frazier rand Moses Guess, from Hickory Valley, six miles from McMinnville, Warren Co., Tenn.; George and Haywood Weathersby; John F. King, the well-known preacher, came in 1834. The first frame house in the valley was built in 1851 or 1852 by John Combs and George King. The first school-house, a log building twenty-four feet square, was built in 1833. The first teacher was from Tennessee. The first sermon was preached by Andrew Buchannan, a Presbyterian minister.

These writings along with Moses Guest Sr will from Grundy Co Tennessee tells about the childrens names as well as where most of them settled. You can track them from
Tennessee to Madison Arkansas then to Benton County Ar. And then the Census takes over and has most going into Hill County Texas with the Frazier line. Then finally Moses Jr and wife Katherine Frazier Guest and some children are buried there at Eastland Texas.
the will of Moses sr states his wife as Dorcus.

I agree there are many spellings for the name from Guest/Guess/Gest/Gist/etc. You have to remember most of the people during that time signed documents with and X. Not all just most.

I've found most of their children via ancestry and what family knowledge I've had to go on.

My trouble is I'm missing a Henrettia (Hetty) and an Edith. I know they existed as they have been spoken about in the family. But I can't find anything on them, births or deaths? I believe neither married and one of them was at least a nurse. Both their brothers Army records mention them, but that is all I have found. I have no idea of age order/birth dates.

Can anyone help at all?

Annette and I have since solved this mystery.

Frances GARNISH was born in 1819 in the Workhouse in St Giles in the Fields, MDX, base born child of Mary Ann GARNISH. Mary Ann GARNISH, the mother also went by the names of RICHMOND, IRVIN/G and GUEST. She was married to John RICHMOND in 1830 but didn't seem to marry anyone else - although she had another daughter she called/baptised as Harriet Elizabeth IRVIN/G in 1824. The name GUEST seems to be just another invention.

Frances GARNISH had 4 illegitimate children; viz
Henrietta Harriet GARNISH born/died 1839
William GARNISH (aka William BELCHER, aka William SKINNER) born in Chelsea Workhouse 1843
my gg gm Mary Ann GARNISH (aka Mary Ann SKINNER) born Chichester, Sussex in 1848
Henry Alfred GARNISH born Brighton, Sussex in 1851

Frances GARNISH (using the invented name of STONE) married the widowed shoemaker Joseph ALLEN in Chelsea in Feb 1853.

Together with Elizabeth ALLEN born 1840 in Wiltshire, daughter of Joseph ALLEN and his first wife Amelia (nee OVERTON), Joseph and his family emigrated to Western Australia aboard the 'Clara' in 1853.

After their arrival in Western Australia Joseph and Frances ALLEN had another 3 children, Clara, Louisa and Frances.

Joseph died in 1860.

Frances then married Joseph George Le SAGE in 1861.

So - another mystery solved.
I have dicovered a few things since I last posted here.

DNA tests show we (my branch) goes back to Nathaniel, b 1707 -- and our DNA does NOT match the other Maryland Gist's, either. Nathaniel had a son also named Nathaniel who was killed at Kings Mountain -- we go back to THAT Nathaniel. He moved from Cumberland County, NC just before the Revolutionary War to what was then Washington County, Virginia, but is now Wise County, Virginia. However he died in 1780 making tracing his offspring difficult. We are just now putting the pieces of his family together. We are descendants of Christopher, Nathaniel, and Thomas of Lawrence County, Alabama from about 1818 until most left the area. There was also a Moses Guest there (Lawrence County) but we are not related to him through y-chromosome DNA testing. I think his family went to Texas, as did part of mine. He might go back to the other Maryland Gist's though but I don't really recall. If yall are adament they spelled their names "Guest" he probably didn't go back to the Maryland Gist's. We are also closely related to some Gist's who moved from Southern Kentucky to Northwwestern Alabama a decade or two after our first bunch went to Lawrence County, Alabama @ 1818.

All those descended from Nathaniel b. 1707 (so far) have DNA that matches each other but none of the other Maryland Gist's. Maybe we are illegetimate or one of the others raised the children of orphans (if orphaned by a Gist daughter we might still have Gist blood) -- we will never know I suppose.

And all of us also have stories of an "Indian" ancestor and that we are "somehow" related to Sequoyah -- my autosomal DNA test showed I do have a little American Indian DNA, but not much.

Nathaniel's (b 1707) "brother" Christopher knew George Washington personally. Nathaniel and Christopher both had sons named Nathaniel and often you see things attributed to one of these three Nathaniels that really was done by another one of them.

Vance Hawkins

I have looked long and hard trying to identify the parents of Moses Guest Sr. and to this date I have seen nothing that would indicate a family relationship. Any claim concerning being related to "Gist" is nothing but pure speculation and I have serious doubts that there was any such family relationship. For one thing Moses knew how to read and write and he spelled his name "Guest". Only when others recorded his name for him in records did they misspell it. Evidence points to this Moses Guest being somehow related to the "Capt." Moses Guest family of King's Mountain fame. Capt. Moses Guest was a little bit older, but they lived and traveled to the same places during the same time frames and apparently they knew the same people. Samuel Isaacks being one of those.

Moses Guest is related to Nathaniel Guest (Gist) b 1707 in MD married to Ann Washington (George's sister) and an alliance with Werteh (sister to the Cherokee principal chief) Sequoya (half Brother). For more information investigate the Washington papers. The first nations bloodline you carry is Cherokee. Frequently you will see names repeat in a family line and the George, Nathaniel, and Christopher names that repeat throughout this family line are no exception.

William Perry Guest

I am seeking information about my great great grandfather William Perry Guest, b. c1830, married to Mary J. Wright. William was probably born in South Carolina but lived most of his life in Georgia. His daughter Martha Ann Guest Yarbrough b. 1863 near Columbus, GA, d. 1927 B'ham, AL was my great grandmother. Martha was married to John Francis Yarbrough. Any information about William, Martha, or their family would be helpful.
