Hi Linda, I don't know if you are still on ancestry.com. I was working for a company at the time of these e-mails, and had taken an early retirement soon after. I have been looking up information for my father, and just came across these e-mails. If you receive this, please give me a call at: 253-208-2417. Sincerely, Lori Tharp Mellick

Family Tree DNA is in the lead, their databases are several times larger than "ALL THE OTHERS COMBINED.."!

3.) Paternal Y-DNA test categories: Y-12, Y-25, Y-37, Y-67, Y-111.

4.) Maternal categories: mtPlus, mtFull, mtMega.

5.)
James F. Guinn born about 1825, Tennessee

My Great-Great Grandfather was James F. Guinn who married Emeline Brinkley (Brinkly) in Franklin County, Tenn in 1853. We find them on the 1860 TN Census, and all the way through to 1930 TX but we have been unable to UNEQUIVOCABLY link our James F. Guinn to any on the 1850 TN Census. There is a family connection after 1910 to the Hills, and he named one of his sons James Farris Guinn so I think this may be a "family" name...we would like to know which line we descend from and while the "easy" way out is to latch on to a likely suspect (LOL) I am convinced that someone out there has the information we need.Anyone have any suggestions for us?

The Culpeper County, Virginia Chancery Court files clear up all the confusion about the Guinn family. John Guinn, son of Benjamin, died in 1852. His wife Mary Curtis Guinn died 25 June 1883.

In several cases the family of Abiah Guinn( son of Benjamin Guinn) is delineated:

Matilda Guinn married James Collins

Henderson Guinn (His children are identified in an affadavit from Peter J. Norris): 1) Matilda married Wm. H. Tugwell 2) Mary E. married L.M. Allen 3) Sallie married N.F. Cox 4) A.B. Guinn 5) John A. Guinn (named after his uncle John)

Milton Guinn

Phares Guinn (sometimes spelled Pharish or Farish)

Abiah Guinn (He threw a Union soldier down a well during the Civil War, and although he was persuaded to let the man out, Abiah ended up imprisoned for the rest of the war.)

Tandy William Guinn

Sarah Guinn who married Wesley Hill

Alfred Guinn

Abraham Guinn

Benjamin W.
Guinns of Culpeper, Virginia

Chancery Court cases in Culpeper County, Virginia spell out clearly the family and descendants of Benjamin Guinn.

One, Hessibah Curtis etc. Vs John Guinn etc.; Culpeper County, Virginia; Library of Virginia Chancery Records Index No. 1845-021; http://www.lva.virginia.gov/chancery/case_detail.asp?CFN=047...
is a request by his descendants for the court to tell them who gets how much, because Benjamin has died, and two of his five children as well. Benjamin's will instructs his executors to sell off all his property after Sarah (his wife) died and divide it among his surviving children and the lawful issue of any children who have died. Son Joshua died without marrying and son Abiah left 10 children. To make it worse, some of Abiah's children sold or borrowed against their shares of grandfather's estate.

Among the documents is one dated 16 January 1845 recording the sale of the property inheirited by Joshua Guinn from his father’s estate (Joshua was son of Benjamin Guinn). The land was sold for the sum of $3771.58 (2011 Equivalent $110,928.82). It was collected by John Guinn and the court decreed it be divided into four lots and paid as follows:
1 lot to Hepsheba Curtis
1 to Peyton R. Eldridge and Polly, his wife
1 lot to be retained by John Guinn as one of the heirs
1 lot to be divided equally among the children of Abiah Guinn, dec’d:
1) James Collins and Mtilda his wife
2 Henderson Guinn
3) Milton Guin
4) Phares Guinn
5) Abiah Guinn
6) Tandy W. Guinn
7) Wesley Hill and Sarah E. Hill his wife
8 Alfred Guinn
9 Abraham Guinn
10) Benjamin W. Guinn
(The children of Abiah are always listed in this order, so one can assume this is the birth order).

Another statement dated 22 January 1845 distributes Benjamin Guinn's estate of $5514.95 ($162,205.29 in 2011 dollars). Expenses of $185.22 reduced it to $5329.73 to be divided in fifths (1/5 to each of Benjamin's five children). The children alive at the time of the distribution (John, Hepsibah and Mary/Polly) each get 1/5. Abiah's 1/5 was divided among his children. Joshua's 1/5 was divided among the 13 heirs (John, Hepsibah, Polly/Mary and Abiah's 10 children).

There are detailed statements of the monies due each heir, accounting for all funds advanced to them or costs they paid. Based on these receipts, Hepsibah and Elijah Curtis had the following children:
Henry B.
John J.
Churchill
Benjamin W.

Mary Guinn, daughter of Benjamin, and her husband Peyton R. Eldridge and their family moved to Kentucky between 1810 and 1820. Her share of her father's estate was left in trust with John Guinn to manage for her, and was the subject of another lengthy court case in the 1870's. I'll post another thread about that one. But in this case there's an interesting letter dated 23 March 1844 from Peyton R. Eldridge to John Guinn acknowledging receipt of one-half of a hundred dollar bill, and asking John to send the other half. I'd never given much thought how they sent large sums of money around before banks were comonplace.

I have just started researching this family. It appears from the census records that John had two wives. We are descended from his second wife, Mary. As far as I have found, they had 5 children:
1) Cornelia Helen married Peter J. Norris and left behind a family bible with her mother's birth and death information. I know everything about this family, if anyone is interested. They are full of characters.
2)) Susan A. who married John W. Lamon, who apparently died shortly after as Susan and her son John are living with her parents in the 1850 census. John the younger lived with his grandmother until she died. His name was always listed as "Lamon" despite marriage records being misread as Lemon.
3) Benjamin W. I haven't started on him yet.
4) Martha, married M. F. Marshall. I've just started on her.
5) Mary Elizabeth married Reuben Moore Crump. They had 5 children and I've traced all of them.

I am really interested in John Guinn and his siblings. There were other Guinns still in Culpeper, and I'd like to know how they relate to our line.

The 1900 census of Galena, Jasper Co., MO, lists Henry Helms, with wife Mary 37, and children Rosetta 22 and George W. Helms, 13. It shows Henry born in MO, his father born in MO, and mother born in NC instead of ND like the 1920 census. Mary was born in New York and her parents in Ireland. They were married 15 years on that census, so the year was abt. 1885. So I found a marriage record for Henry Helms and Mary Downing, in Cass County, MO, March 7, 1886.

I am new at this, and hope this can help with your relatives in Arkansas. My family on my father side are Guinns that moved from Arkadelphia and Little Rock. to a plantation in Jefferson Texas. The story is that two brothers split, and one move to Jefferson. I have tracked some of my relatives from there. I just picked a name from the phone book and call. It seem that everyone is related in some way. Good luck.

Emily Guinn McGinnis

Re: Marriage of Martha Rebecca Aycock to G. Guinn

I have a copy of their marriage license which I obtained from microfilm records at the Georgia Archives in Morrow, Georgia. Martha Rebecca Aycock and George W. Guinn were married on January 20, 1873 in Spalding County, Georgia. I am descended from both the Guinn and Aycock families. My great-grandfather was John Guinn who was the brother of George. John married Mary Elizabeth Aycock who was Martha Rebecca's first cousin.
EDGAR GEORGE GUINN OF OKLAHOMA

I am looking for the parents of Edgar George Guinn, born about 1901 or so. I believe he was born in Oklahoma. He married Vaneda Brigance, born 1910 in Hughes Co., Okla. in 1930. His Mother may have been Lena Hutchins, and his Father may have been William Fountain Guinn. I have seen this in some family trees (and put it in my own) but I would like some confirmation on the accuracy of this info. Can anyone help?

Census records indicate my Margaret was born around 1811. Do your records indicate how old John was when he joined the army? It has potential. Thank you for the tip. If I find anything new I'll let you know.

I have a Margaret Guinn in my Guinn ancestors, but have no information about her. Her parents were John Guinn, Sr. (d. 1828) and Mary Bovard (d. after 1828). They lived in Washington Twp., Westmoreland County. John was born in Hebridean, Isle Of Lewis, Ross And Cromarty, Scotland. Family info indicates that he arrived in Philadelphia in 1776 and joined the Continental army. don't have confirmation of that, though. John and Mary had eight children -Hanna, Margaret, John, Jr.,Robert, Samuel, Jane, unknown and Oliver. Samuel died in 1858 and is buried in Poke Run Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Does anyone have a clue to the parentage of Margaret Guinn/McClellan. All I have is that she lived in Rostraver Township and is buried in Rehoboth Cemetery.
