Hi! My family is from Johnston County. My grandmother was Barbara Gulley Montague. Her father was Ransom Gulley. What info do you have on the Gulley family? I thank you for any help you can give me.

Barbara

I, too am searching for info on William and Melissa Cooley Gullie. They are my great great grandparents. I am very interested in the family photos of the Gulley's. I currently live in the Oak Grove section of Durham NC. My daddy is George, great grandson of William and Melissa and he is still living. He does not remember anything about William or Melissa. His grandfather John (William's son) died on the front porch in a rocker 1936 on Coley Rd (family farmhouse). They were all farmers on the family owned property on Coley Rd, Durham NC. Their house stood tall for a long time and the old church Union Grove Baptist Church is still there. Gullie Cemetery on Coley Rd. My dad was 4 years and he remembers when John died. Ernest Gullie was my grandfather. I have good info on the family from this point on but am really interested in anything going back to William and your grandmother Audelia. Would love to hear from you. Thanks

Paula, I'm so sorry not to have replied sooner. My husband and I are authors of four novels on nuclear terrorism - web site leeboylandbooks.com. We have been pushing on a deadline for the past three months.

I am so frustrated with my GGfather. Finding his parents has been a long disappointing road. Melissa was easy. I've had several people give me erroneous information. So as of today I still am searching.

My husband and I drove Coley Road and visited the cemetery where numerous Gullies are buried. I'm sure you know who these folks are. I wanted to find the old farm place but could get no info on where it was. GGf and GGm were buried on that farm. My mother Buena Vista (Roycroft) Edwards took me there when I was a young girl but I have not memory of the exact place.

Now about Audelia Gullie - I know that there is another spelling for Gulley but all my early records and Quinton Gullie's grave marker are spelled "ie." Audelia "Dukie" Gullie Roycroft was my grandmother. Her death certificate is on line. She passed away from Bright's Disease when my mother was a teen. Mother never got over losing her. Grandfather died when I was nine and we were living in Delaware. They were both buried in Fuquay Varina at Wake Chapel Cemetery.

Audelia was a brilliant seamstress and played piano quite well. As did my mother who lived to be 91. Daddy followed her five years later at 94. Mother described Audelia as being very dear and loving. She had mother late in life and began having ill health. Mother said she loved ham and of course that was the worst thing for her. Mother told me that Grmth had a little white dog when she and Grpa were married. When my Uncle Bill was born - their first child - the dog ran away. Grpa found him and brought him home but the dog would never stay. She also told about ruining a new dress Grmth had made her by climbing up in an apple tree and falling out. Mother hid the dress in the attic and not only got a "switching" for ruining the dress for climbing the tree, but ended up sick with the stomach ache from eating the apples. She was a bit of a tom boy I think, because she excelled at pole vaulting and tennis in boarding school.

After Grmthr died Mother and my aunt Alta (Roycroft) LeGare were first farmed out to relatives - my Uncle William Ruffin Roycroft, who was a pharmacist in Cotes, NC. and later invented a cream called Endit that is used to cure bedsores. Uncle Bill settled in Shallotte NC where he opened a pharmacy with his son Douglas who passed away last year. Eventually Grandpa put the two sisters in boarding school in Cary to complete their high school. At one time Grfr became a justice of the peace in Fuquay/Varina. He was living with my Aunt Ruby Gullie Aycock in Fremont, NC when he passed away from prostate cancer.

I don't know where the Dukie came from in Grandmother's name. If you do I'd appreciate knowing.

Grandfather was from Granville county and had a general store at one time. I have the Coats and Clark spool cabinet from his store and grandmother's rocker.

My first cousin, Audelia Gullie Aycock (Aunt Ruby's daughter) is grmthr's namesake. I was of course named for my mother. As long as mother was living she was called Buena and I went by Vista. When she passed away I took the entire name and use it professionally.

I have some family pictures - one lovely one of Audelia - and if you like will send them by e-mail as attachments. Some I can identify others you may be able to help me with. My computer gave me a problem awhile back and my husband retrieved a lot of information - including the pictures. They are on my husband's computer. Let me hear from you and we will see what you know that I don't.

Buena Vista Boyland - 321-255-3995
(Born 8-20-41 at my Aunt Ruby's farm Fremont, NC.)

I do have one question, do any of you know about Artimus? She was married to another Gulley before marrying Louis E. Halpin in 1909 in Chicago, Ill. Don't know if the first husband died or they divorced. Thanks all

One of my father's family connections moved on into Missouri from the Clay County area. They were in contact as late as the 20's or 30's and were still in Missouri. I think they were in the mining business. Since I can account for most of the Hatchers, it could be either the Gulleys, Birdwells or Copas that he was talking about.

It's not much but maybe it'll lead you somewhere.

Hi again - Since I was curious, I went ahead and searched. Have found several census records for her, and her death certificate, which I have attached here.
She died in 1930 in Gideon,New Madrid,Missouri, and is buried in the Stanfield Cemetery. Have checked Find a Grave, but there is no listing for her internment there. You might want to fill out a request for someone to take a photo of her headstone, if you are interested. This is a free service, volunteer based, and helps add some photographic memories to your tree.
Hope this helps you out.
Julee

Hi BethaParker913 - I just posted a note about Edwin to your email address. At one point, I also thought my Edwin Henson was married to your Margana...but have since discovered that is not the case. My research led me to learn that Edwin was in California at the time the marriage took place in 1883...so it must have been a different Edwin Henson. I have since removed her from my tree.
That said, I do have copies of both their marriage certificate ( they were married in Cape Girardeau, Missouri) and a 1910 Census record for Margana Henson, and have attached them here for you. I would really study that for clues. Try to follow her children and see what comes up.
Good luck , and let me know if I can help you further.
Julee Cooke
I don't know how I got it but I have an old Bible given to Alva Delphi from Burlington, Ky church on Oct. 7th, 1947. It has births marriages and deaths in it. The most is births. The names listed are Plummer Gulley born Mar. 10, 1858. Eliza Jane Rose Gulley born Dec. 13th, 1859. Cecil Clair Gulley born Oct. 15th, 1885. Robert Jordan Gulley born June 18th, 1884. Lula Pearl and Maude Mae Gulley born Oct. 11, 1892. Marley Plummer Gulley born Sept. 14th, 1894. Lloyd Crouch Gulley born Feb. 10th, 1897. Harry Rose Gulley born July 1st, 1899. Alva Dora and Alma Nora Gulley born Oct. 15th, 1902. Lester William Gulley born Aug. 26th, 1887. This entry was put in after the other entries. Marriages are Alva Dora Gulley to Wilson C. Delph Oct. 22nd, 1930. Plummer Gulley and Elizabeth Rose Jan. 8th, 1885. Deaths listed are Alma Dora Gulley Aug. 10th, 1903...lived 1 year,10 months and 5 days. In births it looks like the name is Marley but in the deaths it looks more like an N to make the name Manley Gulley Aug. 17th, 1935, 41 years, 11 months, 3 days. Plummer Gulley Dec. 15th, 1938...80 years, 9 months, 3 days. I hope this helps someone. Many years ago when I was a teenager there was a little store in Burlington called Gulley's. I am assuming it is the same family as I lived in Burlington and now only live in Florence a few miles from there. Let me know if this family belongs to you and I will send you the Bible. I am now 60 years old.

I would venture to guess that we are kin somehow. I don't know much about the family history at all. I do know that somewhere my granny had a book at one time that said that our family history could be traced back to Pocahantas. I always thought that was need. I'm more familar with my Winchester side of my family that with the Gulley side. Unfortunately I don't really know much.
I hope your find out more information.
Amanda Gulley Bibb
