Hi Essi, I am Leslie Gullivers grand daughter from his second wife in England, her name was Ethel, Leslie had 10 children with her, one was my Mum Muriel who died in 2001 from motor neorone disease. Grandad came over here in 1915, in enlisted in the name of Ernest Ryan, he deserted the Army & was caught because he wrote a letter to his Mother Esther telling her where he was, she hid the letter from her second husband Marceau Hartrive, he found it & wrote to the Army, he did 186days hard labour. He died in 1973, my Grandma died in 1992. I am one of 9 children, 6 boys & 3 girls. We can remember your Father coming over here to see his brother, the wonders of the internet. Hope you get this e-mail as i would love to hear from you soon. Alison Hampton

Hi Stephen
I think i know the reason why the aunt would not say anything about Leslie, he went into the Army for just two months, Myra was not well so they discharged him, he tried to enlist again but Myra objected, he then joined up under the name of Ernest Ryan, he fought in France & then came over to England were he met my Grandma Ethel, the problem was he Deserted,he then wrote a letter to his Mother Esther telling her what he had done, by then he had two children with Ethel, Esthers second husband found the letter & wrote to the Army & told them, Leslie did 182days hard labour, he was lucky not to have been shot. He was never allowed to return to Australia. I will give you the website for the archives. http://naa12.naa.gov.au Hope to hear from you soon.
Alison.

Hi Alison it great to hear from you

In October last year I spent some time at a well resourced family history library with a volunteer who was very experienced in tracing family history. After a couple of hours of dead ends we were able to find a trace line to Leslie Gulliver.

When I was a small child (5 years of age) I had heard many stories about Leslie Gulliver. The story that I most remember was that he had gone to war (World War 1) and had died. It was said that my grandmother Myra never heard from him and it was presumed that he was killed in action. She had two sons - I knew them as my Uncle Gus and Uncle Harry. As grew up I rarely saw Harry but saw Gus often. Harry I am not sure what profession he worked in but Gus was a well respected doorman and gentleman at a highly respected club in Sydney. Both Harry and Gus died about 10 or so years ago. My grandmother Myra died in the mid 1970s. If I can recall correctly Harry married but I am unsure to whom and if they had children. Gus never married and remained single until his death.

I was researching Leslie Gulliver for a number of reasons. One was that there were some suggestions that there could be Australian Aboriginal connections through my grandmother and secondly I had heard that an Aunty had information about Leslie Gulliver but could not tell family members about this. I was curious to find out what this could be (the aunty is my mother's sister from Myra's second marriage). I am still following up the family links to possible Aboriginal ancestry. The information that the Aunty knew seems to be from the Australian defence force archives that has about 110 pages of correspondence between the defence force and my grandmother Myra. In the correspondence it speaks about Leslie Gulliver being alive in England. I endeavoured to contact my Aunty who is in her late 80s about this to see if she knew any more information but as of yet had no luck in gaining further information.

I had heard that Leslie left my grandmother Myra because her mother was not a very pleasant women. I did not know my great grandmother so I cannot verify this. I know that they grew up in suburb called Redfern which today is a very trendy inner suburb of Sydney. They sold this terrace house many years ago. I lived in this terrace house for the first five years of my life and visited my grandmother Myra on and off many years after until they sold it. I remember my Grandmother as sweet kind old women who was a great lover of animals. The terrace house is still there today and had a fashionable makeover. A far cry from what it would have been like when Leslie knew the suburb.

Look forward to hearing back from you

Stephen Robards

That seems to work for me - however I had the name of my Great grandmother as Lydia Sarah - I shall have to search that one. The only other info I have was written on a scrap of paper regarding Susannah Gulliver - "she was Lady Gulliver and sister to the two spinster ladies who were ladies in waiting to Queen Victoria" I don't know if that refers to Susannah married to Edward Milbanke, or her mother. There is also reference to a brother Sir John Gulliver.

My Grandfather was Alfred Clifton Nelson, youngest son of Edward Milbanke and Susannah Gulliver born 2.7.1871, his brothers were Edward Milbanke born London 1852, Albert born London 1859 and Charles born Rotherhithe 1860. His sisters were Maria born Rotherhithe 1864, Lydia Susannah born Deptford in Kent 1868 and Mary Jane born Wheatley Hill in Drham 1876. I believe Susannah Gulliver was the daughter of William Tellkamph Gulliver married to Susannah ?.

I was searching for Susannah Gulliver because one of her daughters, Lydia Sarah Nelson was my great grandmother. Do you have any info on the other names of her children as well as your grandfather so I can fill this in on my tree? My mother was from Sunderland, and I was always told that Susannah's father was Lord Gulliver.

I have found another link to this too - http://www.johnrogers.com.au/familytree/gp126.html but unfortunately it stops at Lord Gulliver. This doesn't really help but I guess we are distantly related!

Can I ask this question of you was Leslie your grandfather (I respect your confidentiality if you do not respond to this question)?

Stephen

Thank you so much for your reply. Yes My grangfather was your uncle, although he was born in October 1880, so the date of birth you suggest probably belongs to another sibling?

A gentleman by the name of Stan Crowther very kindly gave me some information about Leslie regarding his marriage. Apparently it is said that he joined the Army to get away from an interfering mother in law! She must have been quite fearsome to make him join the Army. The family are aware that his 'marriage' to my grandmother may have been bigamous, although thankfully my grandmother died quite unaware of this fact. I a interested in finding out anything about his early life and especially what on earth could have made him leave 2 young sons (according to Mr rowther) never to see them again. I was 14 when he died so remember him well. He was always a very kind, family man, although quite careful with money, so I'm not surprised that he broke his silence to claim his inheritance. I do have a few old family photographs, thanks again to Mr Crowther, but would love to see more if you have them or indeed any information at all. I can (if you are interested) fill in the blanks from his years in ENgland. He must have missed his family terribly, as all of his children were named after his brother & sisters.

my husbands's grandfather, William H. Gulliver, also grew up in Portland, Maine.
One of 6 brothers who we know very little about. William practiced law in Portland, died on a business trip in Boston, Ma. in 1929 leaving wife, three boys and two girls. We tried researching Gulliver in Donagal, Ireland and was told "No Gullivers in Ireland" would be interested in any info. you might have Patti Gulliver

Re: Leslie H Gulliver

The Leslie Gulliver you refer to may have been my uncle, brother of my father George Hubert Septimus Gulliver, born in New Zealand, 20.3.1882. Father's parents were Rev. Edward Hale Gulliver M.A. (Cambridge) and Esther Georgina, nee Gilman. Both were born in England, and spent some time in India and New Zealand, before coming to Australia. They had a large family, and I have a great deal of information about the family. Family lore has it that Leslie was unhappy in his marriage here in Australia and when he went to WWI simply did not return to Australia. It was assumed he was missing in action. However he did surface again in the 1940's when Grandma Esther died, and made his claim to share in her estate. He was living in England then, and had married again. (One hesitates to say so, but it would appear it may have been a bigamous marriage, as I do not know when his first wife died). Leslie may have had a son, Ken Gulliver, who was a naval officer in the Australian Navy, but I would have to check this. My immediate family members have lost close contact with some of our cousins. My father visited England in the 1960's and stayed with his brother Leslie. Please reply if you think this is a connection.
Hello again,

I responded earlier today to another query (re: William Hembrow and Elizabeth Griffiths), and after reading your other postings regarding these two families, I am most eager to hear from you.

You obviously have far more research experience than I, who am fairly new to this.

My husband's grandfather, John Henry Hembrow (born Jun 1877, Paddington, Kensington) was son of William Thomas Hembrow and Martha (Mitchell) Hembrow. William was a railway clerk/storekeeper, born in Bridgwater abt 1851 to William Hembrow (Master Mariner)and Elizabeth Griffiths.

It appears that my husband's great grandfather William was the older brother of your John Griffiths Hembrow. But, you appear to know much more about the family than I, so I'm really anxious to hear from you to learn more.

Please get in touch,
Juanita

Thanks for the information. I will check out the courthouse and see what I can find. Might I ask one more favor..? Is there any chance that you might have a picture of Agnes Graham Golliver? If so, would it be possible for you to scan it and send it to me? I am trying to collect the information about all of William and Clara Graham's children and I am hoping to find a picture of each of the children. So far, I have a picture of William and Clara and one of my gr. grandfather, Reuben Graham. Wm. and Clara had 13 children so I have a ways to go! Thank you again for taking the time to help me with researching this family.
I am researching a Gulliver family. My ancestor George from Dorsetshire emigrated in 1852; a brother emigrated here in 1849 -William. They had a brother John who I recently located in the 1861 UK Census records. John & his wife Emma (White) were living in Fordington and all the children were born there - Charles Arthur, Walter, Clara & Sydney William. There were also two sisters - Maryanne & Eliza.
Through a researcher many years ago traced the family back to 1658 to the village Fifehead Magdalen. I am currently writing a book on the family.

Garland's last name is Golliver. He was my dad's next older brother, and his nickname was Red because of his hair.( this was long before I can remember, he was like my dad not much hair and what there was is white.
