I can confirm that Elijah Jr was the war of 1812 veteran. He got into an interesting legal battle with the United States trying to get his bounty land grant in exchange for his service in the war. He had to go before a judge and give a sworn testimony of what he recalled from the war. It's very interesting to read!

Hi I saw your post about William S. Gunn. My great grandfather had that name, the S in his middle name was Sandersin (not sure of spelling) and he and his wife lived in Florida in the later part of their lives, and came to U.S. in 1920's. My grandfather James Gunn lives there currently. I was just wondering if my William S. Gunn was the same as yours, if not I'm sorry.

William Sandersin Gunn

My great grandfather was William Sandersin (not sure on spelling)Gunn. He emigrated to the United States in 1922. HIs wife Mary (1930 census says her name is Elizabeth) their 2 children James Kemp, and Elizabeth (known to family as Beth)emigrated in 1924. William and the rest of his family came through Canada and I believe crossed the border into Michigan and eventually settled in Cleveland, Ohio. I don't really know much other than that. James Kemp Gunn is my grandfather, his birthdate is the only date I know. Based on the 1930 census I have calculated rough dates. If anyone has any information about my great grandfather, like his parents or grandparents I would love to know; I'm putting my family tree together. My grandfather doesn't really know too much about his relatives other than they are buried in Scotland and I would love to be able to tell him about our family!

Clan Gunn Chief needed; John Gunn in Dalnaha, Stathmore and Braehour.

There is a plan afoot to overthrow centuries of tradition and convert the current Commander of the Clan Gunn into its Chief. Now, the Commander is a lovely man and he worked very hard for the Clan Gunn (and its society) for many years; but that is why he is the Commander (it's a sort of Honorary Chief) as the Clan Gunn does not have a Chief. Chief is a matter of bloodline.

But his claim on bloodlines is very weak; he descends from the old Chief line TWICE through the female line. My family tree is better than his; my male line is longer and I descend once through females.

But

1) Females can only become the Chiefly line when all other male lines are extinct. On my family tree where I have John Gunn of Dalnaha, Strathmore and Braehour b 1722 Halkirk m. Marjory/ May Dunbar of Hempriggs b c 1728 married 1745 Watten Parish with descendants Alexander b 1745, Jean b c 1749, Angus Gunn in Braehour b c 1750 marries Elizabeth Matheson, George Gunn in Braehour b c 1757 marries Margaret Gunn, William Gunn in Braehour b 1750 d 1812 marries Janet Sinclair 1780 1870 and whose children include Hon. Donald Gunn of Manitoba (come on Canada; you can do this!!) and William Gunn of Waranga in Australia, John Gunn of Braehour and Ontario, and others (I have left out the female descendants overall)... My estimate, using my incomplete tree is that there are at least 40 potential male Gunn lines, any one of which could provide an interesting claim to be Chief.

So, get checking your tree, if you can link back to John Gunn of Braehour through the male line then you might be the Chief!

2) On this site I have also found descendants from Captain Alexander Gunn, in particular from the daughter Catherine Innes Gunn. That line is better than my line as it has one further generation of male descendants. And I have been told that my claim is better than the Commander's.

So, read about how they are thinking of being silly; see The Court of the Lord Lyon at http://www.lyon-court.com/lordlyon/736.html

and if anyone want to complain about the idea of ignoring tradition and converting a Commander into a Chief (and remember it's for his line forever!!) email lyonoffice@scotland.gsi.gov.uk and complain to the Clan Gunn society at http://www.clangunnsociety.org/contact.html

But get moving,we have to stop this idea.

Hello Jason,
I am so pleased to get in contact with another Gunn who traces family trees. My name is Kerrie Bower and my grandfather is Frank Gunn. He is the Frank Gunn that you refer to with the parents James Gunn and Alice Foley.I have been doing our family tree for many years but have never gone online to search. I have bought the new Ancestry 2012 software with the free membership so I will be filling in the blanks on my family tree. If your happy for me to keep in contact , I will fill you in with any futher relatives we have.
I vagely remember my grand fathers brother George, but I do remember them talking about Georgie Gunn all the time. Lavinia (Aunty Vinnie) lived with Frank for many years as she got older and I clearly remember her. I also remember them talking about aunty Lizzy (Elizabeth). Are you part of the Gunns that live in Ballarat or Bendigo, as my mother and her brothers have visited them on many occasions. My mother is Pat and her brothers are Peter and Terry. I have lots of photos that I can send if your interested.

If you wish for me to answer any questions, please email me and I will be more than happy to do so.
Look forward to hearing from you

Kind regards

Kerrie Bower

Further research shows that it looks like James Gunn was Bernard's brother which still leads back to the same parents, Bernard Gunn and Helene Connelly. According to Canadian birth records, they had Bernard (1819) and Jacques (aka James)(1822). James married Gertrude Chauvette (1847) and they had several children one including Bernard (b. 1848 -possibly Jan 23). James and Gertrude further show up in the 1880 US Census in Manchester, NH.

Hi Patricia

The Scottish records are held by the government in the National Archive and can be accessed online at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Up to 1855 births (baptisms)and marriages were recorded in parish (church) records. Death records however are scant. After 1855 all births, deaths and marriages became statutory records. In addition there is census info every 10 years between 1841 and 1911.
I looked for yours and found Jane Sutherland Gunn b 21/10/1894 in Forse, Latheron, Caithness. This is in the north of Scotland, you can google it. However, you'll see her parents are William and Barbara Coghill. The 1901 census has Barbara 36, William 14, Robert 13, Margaret 11, Alexander 9, Helen 7, Jane 6, Barbara 4 and Mary 3. Her father William had died a pauper, age 46 in 1899. He had had Tuberculosis (phthisis) for 2 years. You'll see this certificate lists his parents. You should be able to track the rest of the family at this website. If ther is no death cert the chances are the person emigrated, try Ancestry for them then.
I'll attach these certs for you.

Good luck Celia

My Grandmother, ,Jeanne Sutherland Gunn, was born in Scotland 21 Oct. 1894. She came to the U.S.A. in 1907 leaving behind her parents, James R. Gunn and Nora M. Coghill and at least 2 brothers. In 1914 she married Willard Reuben Buckridge whose parents were John Joseph Buckridge and Nancy Ellen Whittaker of Otoe, Nebraska. They had 3 daughters (Dorothy Jean 1915, Pauline 1916, and Lois "Petty" 1924) in Kings, California. She died in Los Angeles, Calif. 13 Oct. 1949. I have been informed that her name might have orginally been "Jane" instead of "Jeanne". Do you have any info that matches my info? Thanks for contacting me. Patricia

Patricia,

There have been no Jeanne Sutherland Gunn's born in Scotland since statutory registration began in 1855. The spelling Jeanne is very rare in Scotland.
