Hello, am not sure this is your family but I thought the following might be something to check out. Story is about Charles Godfrey Gunther. His father was Christian G. Gunther who immigrated to US from Germany in 1820. Christian was a fur merchant.

Article and photo of C. Godfey Gunther -- http://www.correctionhistory.org/html/chronicl/gunther/gunth...

Source: Our Firemen, The History of the NY Fire Departments, Chapter 32, Part VII, By Holice and Debbie, http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/state/fire/31-40/ch32pt7.html

"C. GODFREY GUNTHER was born in Maiden Lane, New York City, in 1844. He joined Eagle Hose company No. 1, was a very active, efficient fireman and a working member, who rarely missed a fire. He served his full time with No. 1.

In 1863 Mr. Gunther was elected mayor of New York City. His official acts will be remembered by old citizens as being always business-like, honest, prompt, and actuated by a sincere desire to forward the interests of the city of his birth. It was while Mr. Gunther was mayor that the city was under martial law, General Benj. F. Butler in command. The General sent a message to Mayor Gunther that he desired to see him at his headquarters at the Fifth Avenue hotel. The mayor's reply was characteristic of the man: "Tell General butler that if he has any business to transact with me, that I can be found in my official office at the City Hall."

Mr. Gunther was a member of the Firemen's Ball Committee for many years prior and up to the time of his death, and was chairman of the committee for two years."

Regards,

Sue Pearson

John and Ida Gunther (Colorado, Kansas, Arkansas)

I am seeking information on John and Ida Gunther, my father's mother's parents. John (or Johan) immigrated to the US from Germany in 1872. In 1887 he married Ida (maiden name?) who was born in Pennsylvania in Dec 1863. Both of her parents were also born in Pennsylvania. Census data show that John and Ida had two children. Their son Murlin was born in Kansas in 1888 and their daughter Verna Christe (my grandmother) was born in Colorado in 1892. In 1900 and 1905 the family was living in eastern Kansas. Verna married Charles Perry Rhodes in 1908 in Arkansas. They had a number of children and lived in Kansas for most of their lives. In 1910, John, Ida, and Murlin are in Polk Co., Arkansas. This is the last firm information I have for any of them.

My prime objective is to discover Ida's maiden name and to connect her to her Pennsylvania family.

Marilyn, I am re-reading some old correspondence here! I have most information at this point as someone had sent me the Walz/Maier/Huber ancestry awhile back. We spell the name "Guenthner" or u umlaut. Stumpp to Heilbrunn. One family stayed there, but mine went to Friedental, Crimea.
Are you from the Jacob Roth and Elisabetha (Walz) Roth line?

I have the Walz/Huber/Maier data in .pdf format if you want it!

It is amazing how many Charles GUNTHERs there are around. I continue to search, without much result, for my ancestor. He came from a German speaking part of Poland in the 1830s. Tradition in the family is of a revolution and exodus. He stayed in Basel, Switzerland, long enough for his wife to give birth to a son - also Charles (earlier Carl, as was the father). Then in the 1840s they came to the UK. It is unclear how long they stayed but during the time Carl junior ran away. The family moved west and disappeared. Carl grew up to be first a soldier then a stonemason and labourer. Our only link to the USA is the partial address of a relative called Fritz GUNTHER. This address included "Something" Junction, Via Rochester, New York.
I just haven't come up with anyone who suits the bill.
All the best,
Charles (yes, yet another and the son of a further one)

Hi,
Does anyone know anything about Nicholas and Anna (unknown) Guinther/Gunther that arrived from Germany? They are in the 1880 census in Chicago. Their sons are Dietrich 1866, August 1870 and Friedrich 1872. We are from the line of August, who in 1899 married in Vancouver, WA. He had one son, Roger and left his wife Lucy Roberson when Roger was about a year. For a time he lived in Idaho.
That is all that we know...

Thank you anyone for your assistance,
Deborah

My Great-Great Aunt Tillie (Otillia Koprovic) married into the Gunther family, and we've heard about 2 children, Louise and Robert, but we don't have the first name of Mr. Gunther and I can't find any marriage records with Tillie's name on them. We know she lived in OK in 1920 and was married by 1930. She was born in 1903 near Ostrava in what is now the Czech Republic, but then was "Czechoslovakia" or "Yugoslovia". She came over with her sister Stefania (Stella) and brother Frantis^ek (Frank) and mother, Mariana (Mary).

We've heard she lived in Chicago, and moved to Long Beach, Ca. We've heard she also married a Peters and Manarik.

Do any of you Gunthar researchers have a link to Tillie Koprovic or perhaps have come across her in a search for someone else?

Yelinko
Latrobe

Father Flavian G. Yelinko, OSB, the oldest living monk in the history of St. Vincent Archabbey, died Thursday, Feb. 18, 2010. He was 103. He was born in Palmerton, Sept. 2, 1906, a son of the late John and Mary (Gunther) Yelinko. He was predeceased by two sisters, Mary Willen and Elizabeth Yelinko; and four brothers, Frank, Joseph, John and Stephen Yelinko. He attended Sacred Heart Parochial School in Palmerton. He first came to St. Vincent at the age of 14, in 1920, to attend St. Vincent Preparatory School, graduating in 1924. He attended St. Vincent College, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1929, and St. Vincent Seminary, earning a Master of Arts degree in 1933. He also did graduate studies in library science at the Catholic University of America. He entered the Benedictine Monastic Community of St. Vincent Archabbey in 1926. He made simple profession of vows on July 2, 1927, and solemn profession of vows on July 11, 1930. He was ordained a priest in St. Vincent Archabbey Church by the late Bishop Hugh Boyle, of Pittsburgh, on June 18, 1933. Father Flavian was the only monk at St. Vincent to have attended the funeral of every archabbot in the monastery's history (10 total) except for founder Boniface Wimmer, OSB, who died in 1887. He loved to tell stories, including many about the early years of St. Vincent. A favorite was that when he arrived on campus in 1920, "the whole place had one telephone, manned by Brother Jake in the monastery. When he was mowing the lawn, there was no one to answer the phone." In 1936, he was featured in the March 22 edition of The Baltimore Sun for catching a burglar who broke into his church to steal from the poor box. Father Flavian had been armed with only a flashlight. He served at 12 parishes, as well as in various roles at St. Vincent College and Seminary, and helped with renovations and building construction projects at many of those sites. At St. Vincent Preparatory School and College, Father Flavian was the first college librarian (1927-1937). He was responsible for combining the book collections into one location, cataloguing all of the books, and establishing library hours with librarians and aides. His pastoral experience is considerable. He was assistant pastor pro tem at Fourteen Holy Martyrs Parish, Baltimore, Md. (1935); and St. Mary Parish, Pittsburgh (1936). He was associate pastor at St. Mary Parish, Erie (1937); and St. Boniface Parish, Pittsburgh (1938). The following year he served at St. James Church in Waynesburg, Ohio, then at St. Bernard Parish in Hastings (1940-42). He received his first pastorate at St. Lawrence Parish from 1943 to 1945, then served as pastor of St. Benedict Parish in Carrolltown from 1945 to 1949. As pastor there he oversaw the electrification of the tower clock in the church and the bell ringers in the school, the excavation of the school basement for the cafeteria, and the renovations of the church, as well as an addition of a church social hall. He also started a Cemetery Association there. In 1950, he was named associate pastor of St. Bruno Parish, South Greensburg. While pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Youngstown from 1951 to 1959, Father Flavian oversaw construction of the school there. He was then sent to serve as pastor of Queen of the World Parish, St. Marys, from 1961 to 1965, when the rectory was remodeled and new classrooms were added to the school. As pastor of St. Gregory Parish, Virginia Beach, from 1965 to 1967, he was responsible for an addition to the school. Then he moved to St. John Parish in Summerhill, Pa., and its mission in New Germany from 1967 to 1978, where he supervised the remodeling of the church. Father Flavian retired on Aug. 1, 1978, and returned to St. Vincent. Following his retirement, the former librarian was asked to establish the archives for the Seminary and set up a directory of all students who attended the Seminary. He served as Seminary Archivist from 1981 to 1985. His other responsibilities included serving as chaplain of the Knights of Columbus Council in Barnesboro and as area chaplain of the diocesan Boy Scouts in the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese. He was also co-organizer of the Catholic Periodical Index, sponsored by the Catholic Library Association. On Jan. 17, 2002, Father Flavian became the oldest member in the history of the St. Vincent Benedictine community, dating back to 1846, at 95 years of age plus six months. The entire Benedictine community attended a special dinner in his honor, held Feb. 11, 2002. Again on his 100th birthday, Sept. 2, 2006, Father Flavian presented a menu for his monastic community's dinner celebration of his birthday; at the abbot's table he raised his glass to acknowledge the toasts in appreciation of his long life. The body of Father Flavian will be received at 3:15 p.m. Saturday at the Elizabeth J. Roderick Center at St. Vincent, followed by viewing until 5 and again from 7 to 9 p.m. Viewing will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the parlor of the Roderick Center. The body will be transferred to the Basilica for the vigil service at 7:15 p.m. Sunday. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Monday in the Archabbey Basilica, followed by the interment in St. Vincent Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Benedictine Health and Welfare Fund, St. Vincent Archabbey, 300 Fraser Purchase Road, Latrobe, PA 15650-2690.

Can anyone suggest the best repository that may hold records of my ancestor from Germany, George Gunther/Kinder, who landed in Philly in 1763. He remained in the area for at least 7 years before moving to Washington County, PA. He was listed in the "Early PA Census" in 1763 in Philadelphia County. I am looking for bond records in case he had to earn his passage for five years and birth records of his four children. Actually ANY record of his whereabouts before 1770 would be helpful.

Any help appreciated

I meant that our gus's surname was changed, not yours. That's why my surname is Guenther rather than Gunther.
Do you subscibe to Ancestry? I found the siblings of your Gus in their 1860 census there. If you do not subscribe, often a nearby public library or LDS family center will have it and you can use it there. There are also many free sites that have lots of information. You can start with 'google' and many times that will lead you to the sites.
Good Luck!

From the 1860 NJ census:
Frederick Gunther 59
Pauline Gunther 35
Frederick Gunther 18
Gustavus Gunther 16
Johanna Gunther 14
Henry Gunther 10
Julia Gunther 5
Johanna Gunther 75
William Bliesener 63
John Mundy 8.12
It's certainly possible that we're related. Our Gustavous was the son of Julia (Dauman, Abt. 1811-1886) and Karl Gunther (Abt. 1802-1884). They went first to NY (came here 4/1851 from Prussia) and then to NJ to farm. Gustavous was in the Civil War and his name was changed there from Gunther to Guenther. Happy Hunting!
Hi, I read your post and was curious to know if
any of the people you listed have a relative, possibly
a sister or daughter, named Matilda Gunther.
Matilda is my Great Grandmother. She was born
in Duluth, Minnesota on September 21, 1894. I have
no information on her other than this.

Thank you
carol

Hi, I live near Grande Prairie AB, Canada, and am curious about my family history. This is all I know so far:

Daniel, son of Richard Norman Gunther

Richard, son of Norman Gunther

Norman Gunther, son of Otto Gunther

My father tells me that all he knows is that the family moved to the Edmonton AB area from the state of Minnesota. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!

-Dan Gunther
