Sometimes it is all in the way you phrase your research question. You had good information, a name, a place and a date. It seldom gets better than that. If you wish me to give you some pointers about moving around the genealogy records available online, I will be glad to. I prefer to do it off line as it is off target for this message board. You can find me at tocats@msn.com. Use Jane Guthrie McCutchin in the subject line so I know it is you. My name is Cathryn.
Maybe we can narrow your target down a little. In 1830 there are 20 known Guthrie families living in New York State. Of those 20 only 6 have daughters young enough to be your Jane. One of those I know did not name a daughter Jane. So we are down to these five families one of which might be your Jane's parent.

See you have gone from absolutely no idea to a few possibilities. Each of the following head of households has one daughter under the age of 5 years except Robert, who has two.
George Guthrie of Hebron in Washington county New York
James Guthrie of York, in Livingston county New York*
Robert of York, in Livingston county New York
John in Scott, Cortland county New York
Myram (sp?) in Augusta, Oneida county New York

Of this list we do know that one of them did name a baby girl Jane, because in 1850 she is still living in his household, James and Dorothy Guthrie of York township, Livingston county, New York. If Jane did not wed until after August 2ed of that year then this "might" be her. It just as easily "might not" be her but at least we have a direction to look.
If you will check the 1850 Census, Arena Township, Iowa County, Wisconsin, I think you will find James, Jane, and William as a fairly recent family unit. William is shown as 1 year old/born in 1849 so it is known that he was born after the parents' marriage which would be circa 1847/1848. You may also find some kind of immigration record for James McCutchin(McCutchen) Ireland to U.S. considering the timeframe he would have arrived.

Jane's approximate date of birth is 1826 in New York.I have no clue as to when she married but the info that I have shows that her first child, William, was born in 1850.Other children(8 in all): Martha A. 1853, Mary E. 1856,
James A.1860 & Eugene J. 1860 (twins?, Eliza A. 1862,
Katte C. 1864,& Charles C. 1868.
Any help that you could give me would be much appreciated. I am rather new at all of this but find it facinating. I seem to be the only person in my immediate family that is interested. I want my only grandchild to have this family tree for her children.

We're answering a 4 year old post but here goes anyway. The simpliest thing to do at this moment is to order a copy of the death certificate for Jane Guthrie McCutchin from Brown County, Nebraska. Apparently, Nebraska has required them since 1904 so your ancestor would not have been missed. It's likely someone in the family that was the informant named her father and mother on the death certificate. You can also obtain a copy of her obituary in Brown County that was published on 7/13/1922

They had a son named James Adalbert McCutchin who had a son Alexander Umanes McCutchin. He was my Grandfather.

My sister, Elyce Yvonne Hughes was married to and had three children by Bascom's youngest son, Kenneth Wayne Guthrie from 11 Apr 1952 to 15 June 1970 (divorce). Mr. Guthrie's most distinctive feature was a full head of thick white hair. He was a tough old coot, and some of the teenage boys in Anson, Texas, became more experienced drivers when he chased them for speeding around Anson and the surrounding country roads. Won some - lost some. He built a small house next to his for Yvonne and Kenneth when they were newlyweds. I assume you've seen his obit on the web. I knew his wife, Lucinda Elizabeth PROCTOR (Granny) better. Birth: 08 Mar 1885 in Bell, Texas, USA Death: Jan 1983 in Anson, Jones, Texas, USA She was a wonderful mother-in-law and grandmother, a fantastic cook and a nice lady. I last saw her at my mother's funeral in 1978.

A while back, one of his grandaughters, Deb Reynolds, said that one of JB's kids or grandkids had contacted her. I don't know if that was you or not. I last saw JB and Dorothy and his kids back in the 1950's. Deb has a fantastic historical photo of Bascom and another cowboy on their horses out in the scrub with the Jones County, TX courthouse in the background. circa 1900

I don't check posts frequently. If I can help you with further info or contacts, e-mail me.
Jeanell Hughes Timmons
jeanelltimmons@yahoo.com
I am Richard L Guthrie and I am not in your Guthrie line, but recently I received an e-mail from Betty Guthrie McCollum, who descends from Robert Guthrie of Abbeville, SC. Several family trees list Robert as son of Thomas Guthrie and Jean Duncan (apparently, mistakenly), who came to Savannah, GA in 1774 as indentured servants. I believe that Thomas and Jean are the ancestors of some of the Guthries of Nashville, GA, because Ancestry.com searches document very well their children and descendants. I have a copy of the ship manifest that included Thomas, Jean and their children (but no Robert), including their ages and a genealogy report on Thomas' descendants. Please e-mail me directly at 543kay@charter.net if you want either document. Forgive me if I have intruded into your territory and that of other Guthries. Richard

That's an interesting idea. True, one Welsh name does not a settlement make, but it does make a hypothesis that could be tested by reference to the tax lists or to the county records already cited. If the witnesses to deeds of Welsh-surnamed individuals are also Welsh-surnamed (Davis, Floyd, Powell, etc.), that would support the idea of a Welsh-American settlement.

Is the origin of the surname Guthrie/Guttery certainly known? I've seen literature suggesting French or German ancestry as well as Scots, though Scots seems most likely.

Andrew K. Rindsberg

As you will recall, the 1787 Virginia personal property tax records were fairly complete for the state in that year. It can be used much like a census. The TWO Guthries in Amherst County at that time were William and Nathaniel. In the records, it was written as follows:

William/Nathaniel..... which indicates to me, from other known families, that William was the elder tithable and Nathaniel was living in his household but was also of an age to be a tithable. If Nathaniel was born ca. 1763, he would be 24 at the time and of tithable age (which has been 16 or 21 at different times). With a son born in 1763, William Guthrie would have been a product of the late 1730s/early 1740s.
The Guthrie/John(s) marriage might be of interest. Johns is a Welsh name and they were clanish people, usually living together in settlements. Since Amherst County is along the wagon trail route parallelling the Appalachians Mountains and with a possible Welsh settlement there, it might be that these Guthries travelled with the Welsh from an entry point of Pennsylvania, as many of the Welsh headed south after arrival in this country.

There is no family information in Nathaniel Guthrie's pension application.

Yes, should be Madison Co., KY.

If I remember correctly his inventory consisted of 1 old horse and very used saddle and some odds and ends.

I've been looking for the following information for two days.

June 23, 1993
Salt Lake City
Morman Family History Library

Book: The Wills of Amherst County Virginia

See copy no. Eliz. is most likely the wife of William Guthrie
who had the following kids. My note: this is not my opinion but apparently part of the official public record.
Lucy
Nathan
Susan
Sarah
Laurence
Oliver
Eliz.

Lucy--Book 7 Page 145--Guardian Bond--Eliz. Guthrie,
May 17, 1830--probably submitted by committee after her
death. Necessaries for family in 1825 and taxes in 1824.
Committe of Chas. Mundy and Geo. Staples.

It appears that Wm. Guthrie died early in 1824, and that
Elizabeth died probably in 1827. William's children
appear the have been in the following order. Nichl., Lucy,
Nathan, Sarah, Laurence, Oliver and Eliz.
Nichl. was not a minor in 1828, the rest were.
In 1832 only Sally, Laurence P., Oliver, and Eliz. were
minors.

Nathan's will was written October 23, 1849 and probated
July 19, 1858.

SLC02

On May 28, 1844 Oliver and Nathan Guthrie were witnesses
to will of Miss Nancy L. Petross. Nathan was on the
inventory committee.

SLC03

On July 7, 1841 Nathan Guthrie was on the inventory
committee of Jno. Seay.

SLC04

On August 19, 1789 probate witnessess of the will of Benj.
Cawflin were Nathl. Guttry, Mary Johns, Bartlet Johns,
Jno. Johns.
This Nathl. Guttry cannot be the same as he above
mentioned Nathl. Guthrie. This Nathl. is obviously of age
in 1789. Also the following:

Guttry, Nathaniel, Bachelor and Nancy John spinster Feb.
7, 1790. John H. Goodwin, surety. Consent of her mother,
Mary Johns. (This Mary Johns was probably the Mary Johns
mentioned in the above will. Also it is a possibility
that this Nathaniel is the uncle of the Nathan son of
William mentioned above.

SLC05

It appears that John and William Guthery owned land in
Augusta Co. Virginia as early as Feb. 22, 1796

Larry,

I'm about tapped out, actually. About all I know about the Garrett Guttery lineage is posted online at:
http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/halifax/bios/guthrie1.txt

My own ancestry is through William Guttery's daughter Judith Ann rather than a Revolutionary War veteran. What is intriguing is that her marriage record gives her father's name as William, and Nathaniel (her brother?) put up the surety (marriage bond).

Has anyone checked the ORIGINAL Revolutionary War pension papers for Nathaniel Guttery? They'd be at NARA in Washington, DC, and could probably be copied on request for a fee. They are unlikely to include his parentage, but would likely include names of his wife and descendants as well as neighbors (some of whom may be relatives!) attesting to his good faith.

I don't know where the Gutteries of Amherst County came from. (Or indeed, where most of them went!) I suspect the best way to find out is through the surviving courthouse records, particularly wills and deeds. I don't think it will be easy.

The Amherst County Gutteries certainly used a few traditional names over and over, so when we see other Nathaniels and Williams out there, we should suspect a relationship, particularly when spellings shift back and forth between Guthrie and Guttery, and even Guttridge. The name may have been pronounced in a rather guttural manner originally, like Gutterich with a harsh ch as in "loch". If they were still speaking with such a strong accent, then may not have been in America very long. Families that consistently used the more Americanized Guthrie spelling at this time may belong to other lineages that were in the colonies longer. Treat this as just a hunch.

OK, Larry, this time I really am tapped out. Hope you find the proof you need -- others will be interested.

Sincerely,
Andrew

Andrew K.
I think there is a very good chance that Nathaniel Guthrie married to Johns is related to the "other" Nathaniel of the time. Nathaniel son of Garrett son of John son of John and Elizabeth Baskett Guthrie.

In those marriages of the group wasn't there a marriage where Nathaniel was a witness and wasn't there also a mention of Nathaniel and his brother, William.

It is clear that William had a son, Nathaniel. But I don't remember anything showing he had a son, William. If I am correct about Nathaniel and his brother William that is the only real citation indicating William did indeed have a son William.

Your valid reasoning then is William and ??? had a bunch of daughters, and two sons William and Nathaniel. Nathaniel did die in 1846, I have a copy of his inventory. He was dirt poor. Nathaniel's brother William then married Elizabeth Wingfield and they had several girls, also at least two sons Oliver and Nathan. I seem to remember Nathan died in Amhurst Co. Is this correct.

And can any of the male children of William and Elizabeth Wingfield be traced further. It would really be nice to have a y-dna test done on that line.

A problem as I see it is where did the first William come from. Married in 1790. He is not, William, son of John and Mary Shay. That William was born in the 1720's I believe. Some give the wife of this William as Eleanor Abbott, but more likely Eleanor Harris.

ljg

Sure. The citations are listed in my previous message (22 Mar 2011). I agree that the evidence is not conclusive. In particular, the abstracts do not clearly distinguish between different people of the same name. In order to clarify my interpretation, I added "jr." and "sr.", but please note that I did keep the data and my speculation ("This is ...") separate. Other interpretations are possible!

There are some additional sources online. Nathaniel Guttery (1763-1846 according to unsourced trees) is recorded in the federal censuses for 1810 (in category "45 years or older", Amherst Co., VA), 1820, 1830, and 1840 (the last three all in Madison Co., KY). He applied for a Revolutionary War pension in 1832 and it was approved in 1833 (records or indexes available at Ancestry.com).

His probable father, William Guttery, is recorded in the 1810 census ("45 years or older", Amherst Co.) and in Virginia tax lists (1783, 1785, also Amherst Co.) (Ancestry.com).

William Guttery (abt 1771-1824, unsourced) is another probable son of William Guttery, and it is likely his son who would be listed as Nathan in the guardianship proceedings of 1825.

There are other Guttery's in Virginia about this time, but not many in Amherst County, and their names keep showing up on the same documents. The same traditional names, like William and Nathan/Nathaniel and Elizabeth, reappear in different generations. A more thorough search of deeds and other documents at the Amherst County Courthouse might turn up valuable clues. For instance, did these Guttery's own land next to each other? Was land sold from one Guttery to another? Did they witness one another's legal transactions? Circumstantial evidence such as this would support some sort of relationship.

On another tack, has anyone explored the church records of Amherst County?

Also, connections with other landowning families could lead to manuscript collections that include reference to the Guttery's. For example, the Robinson family into which Judith Ann Guttery married was an important one in colonial Virginia, and some of their manuscripts are held by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. It's a longshot, but it might be worth a look if you live in Virginia.

Happy hunting,
Andrew K. Rindsberg

Would you mind sending or posting your citation for William Guthrie and Nancy Johns having son's Nathaniel and William, Jr.?

I've seen many times Nathaniel show as a son of the William married to Nancy Jane Johns as having a son Nathaniel, but I don't have the citation for a son William.

Just being called William, Jr. doesn't mean his father was also William. Since the same given names were often used by brothers when naming sons, a nephew was often called a Jr. when the uncle lived close.

ljg

Here's my take on the relationships:

William Guttery of Amherst County, Virginia has children including Susan, Sarah, Judith, William jr., and Nathaniel (sometimes called Nathan). This Nathaniel serves in the Revolutionary War, marries Nancy Johns in Amherst County in 1790, and moves to Madison County, Kentucky. His sister Judith marries Stephen Robinson in 1789 in Amherst County and they too move west, settling in 1810 in Clermont County, Ohio.

William jr. marries Elizabeth Wingfield in 1797 in Amherst County and they have several children: Nicholas, Lucy, Nathan, Susan, Sarah, Laurence, Oliver, and Elizabeth. William jr. dies in 1824 and his widow is appointed as guardian of the children including this second Nathan(iel), who was evidently named for his Revolutionary War uncle.

At least, that's what I think happened. Because so many of the names are identical, especially the Elizabeths, it's hard to tell for sure. It would help if someone could look up the original records in Amherst County, because they may include information that was not abstracted in the books I referred to. Anyway, I hope this helps.

Andrew K. Rindsberg

I am confused now and when I first read this post. On 19 Sept. 1825 Elisabeth...appointed guardian...Nathan. Nathan was then a minor how is he the Nathaniel who earlier 1790 married Johns?

If Nathan is related to Nathaniel and Nancy Johns Guthrie he is a descendant, a grandson through William...and counting carefully the is not enough time for that. 1790 marriage to William coming of age and then having Nathan and his siblings.

Ljg
The family moved to GA and resided in Coweta County, GA until 1840s. Apparently, William died in GA about 1840, then William Jackson moved his family to Bullock County, AL where I was born in 1941.

Richard Lafayette Guthrie
