Hello Judy. Just a thought. Are you aware that the forename Bartin has been used by generations of Gutteridges in Northamptonshire - especially West Haddon and Desborough? These include my own ancestors. Some of them were quite eminent. Bartin is an unusual forename and I've wondered what its origin could be. Perhaps it is derived from their original home village? Do you know how far back the Gutteridge name goes in Barton?

Hello Julie

I am also interested in the Gutteridge family tree. My great grand mother's name was Kate Gutteridge, she was born in 1860 in Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey,England and had three brothers Wellington, Nelson and Napoleon. (All born in Surrey). One of the brothers had a daughter named Alice. Could this be your mother? I understand that some family members immigrated to Australia.

Regards
Jennifer

Sorry I was so excited and just read your e mail again properly and you say your husband didnt know his father, what a mysterious family they are. I put an ad in the Manchester Evening News some years ago and got a reply from a cousin in Manchester whos father was Ernest Gutteridge who would have been Lewis and Janets Uncle he owned a newsagents but died in the 1960s. The sone David Gutteridge didnt know anything about the family either,he remembered a birth certificate of Ellen Coucher who was our Grandma and that her mother Eliza Coucher was illiterate, this is true as I have the certificate.Cheers Lynne

Hi,

At last I can't believe it, I was beginning to think Lewis didn't exist, except that I knew he did because after Mum (Janet his sister) died I searched for a few years and eventually managed to get a birth certificate but then the trail went cold. Recently I found a Lewis Gutteridge who married someone with the surname Boot in the quarter Jan,Feb, March 1945 in Ploughly and was wondering whether to order the marriage certificate. My mother, Janet, never said much about her family, apart from Lewis, she told me both her parents died young from TB,well Charles died from TB when he was only 29 in 1928. Janet told me shortly before she died that her mum, Ellen, married again but died in childbirth. She never said if that child lived, I can't find where she remarried or when she died. Janet said she lived with a Grandma then when she died an Auntie, when Dad met her he said she was living with a couple who he thought were midwife and doctor. it is all a mystery. Ive often wondered about Lewis who is my Uncle, is he still alive how many children did he have, could he tell me what happened to his sister after their parents died and what happened to their mother, sorry so many questions, but some nights I spend hours on the internet, going over and over things just hoping to find something. I would love to speak to, perhaps you could email me directly, on linthepin@hotmail.co.uk.Thanks Lynne

I can't believe my luck !! I have just registered with Ancestry as have been on other site previously and had luck with different family connections and now this match!! Can't tell you much as have not had time for in depth research here but all is difficult as it's from my husband's side of the family and he never even knew his father's name. Anyway I did research and bought some certificates and discovered his mother married Lewis Gutteridge 16feb 1945 Bicester (Where i knew) Oxford. Although I have tried cannot find any info of him since --disappeared ? Then I got his birth cert 26 Dec 1922 so know about name Coucher but that is all. Am so excited to know Lewis had a sister. Please can you give me names etc Lewis married Violet Mary Boot and i knew she had 2 brothers but from my other site had a contact who gave so much extra and people I don't think even Violet Mary knew about!!Have traced Gutteridge back through census also. Do not have family tree on line and cannot see me getting time in near future but hope to hear your info and update if I can. Many thanks.

I'm trying to research my late mothers family. Her parents were Charles James Gutteridge and Ellen Gutteridge nee Coucher, they lived in Pleasant Street, Harpurhey Manchester, Charles died in 1928 aged 29. My Mother told me that Ellen married again and died in childbirth. She also had a brother called Lewis who was born in Dec 1922. I can find no records regarding my Grandmothers second marriage, nor can I find out if that child lived. Neither can I find any records of her brother Lewis other than when he was born. Could anyone please help me.

Hi Joan

You kindly replied to this thread on Ancestry.co.uk recently posted by my mother, and she passed me your details as I’m keen to follow this up. I’m a complete novice though so what can I give you that might help us both?

Best regards
Andy Gutteridge
James had at least 3 brothers William, sampson and Thomas from whom I am related. If your ancestor is James Gutteridge then you are related to P C George Gutteridge.

Hi

My maiden name was Gutteridge but I don't think we are related as although my father was born in Kent his family were from Buckinghamshire. However, I can tell you that St Leonards on Sea is joined to Hastings, East Sussex. It is a very interesting part of England and worth a visit. Good luck in your searching.

Pamela Webb (Gutteridge)

Hi, i'm trying to find information on William Gutteridge (also Guttridge). He was my G/G/G.father. The info I have sugests he may have been born in Wandsworth c.1809, but both place and date vary across the different census records.
Around (I believe) 1850 he married Emily or Emma, born c. 1830 and they lived in Hastings, East Sussex, where he died in 1886. There were several children, Mary (my G/G.mother), Frances, Emily, William, Agnes, Jane, Ellen, Richard.
I'm very keen to learn more of his wife, Emma or Emily, - maiden name and confirmed place and date of birth - although all information would be welcome since the picture I currently have is full of anomalies.
Here's hoping someone can help!!

Your message states that you are a descendent of Amos Gutteridge. So is my partner Richard, Amos is his G.G.Grandfather.

Amos' youngest Helena is the line that Richard comes from. I do not have much information on Helena's siblings, but I have found some information on the Gutteridges and Chances in Bedfordshire.

I would be very interested to exchange information with you.
Ann Outram, d/o Joseph Birchall, was born in Warrington, Lancashire in ca. 1821. She had son, Joseph Outram in ca. 1844, born in Ashton under Lyne or the Manchester area of Lancashire, England, father not known. Ann Outram married 1st. John Gutteridge, weaver, in Manchester, Lancashire, in 1844. She had son, William Gutteridge, born ca. 1845 in Clayton or the Manchester area of Lancashire. After John Gutteridge died, Ann married 2nd. John Taylor, in Manchester in 1853. They had children, John and Ann Outram. Ann died in early childhood and John Taylor, Jr. emmigrated to New Bedford, MA. USA in 1920.
In 1851, this family was living at Tame Street in Manchester, Lancashire. In 1861, they were living at 35 Hill Street in South Bury, Lancashire. In 1871 they were living on Spring Lane in Radcliffe, Lancashire. Joseph was a grinder and William was a cotton weaver. Both brothers, Joseph Outram ( Houthram, Oultram ) and William Gutteridge, moved to Australia some time after 1871 to become sheep farmers there. I am searching for information in Australia concerning these brothers, their families, and their descendants. Can anyone help?
Jean Mayo.
