Guttridge/Gutteridge - Leicestershire England

Hi

I am hoping someone may be able to help me with my search for the parents/siblings of Ruth Guttridge born Sileby Leicestershire 1829 (exact date not know) but baptised 15th June 1829 at St Mary 's Sileby. She married Thomas Bailey on 26th December 1848. Their eldest child William Bailey being my great grandfather.

I know a great deal about my Bailey line but am finding it very difficult to find out much about the Guttridge line. Maybe because of the spelling variations that seem to have existed during that time period.

I have one clue from the 1871 English Census for the District of Sileby, Leicestershire, which shows my great grandparents living at 89 King Street Sileby. On the same page there is a Thomas Guttridge, aged 83 years, widowed and living alone at 91 King Street Sileby.

If anyone could shed further light on this clue it would be greatly appreciated, especially anyone with access to the census returns prior to 1871 for Sileby, Leicestershire.

Many thanks

Michelle Hanley
Melbourne, Australia.

Louisa Maria Guttridge

This lady is my great grandmother, mother of Emily Tozer. Her marriage to Edward Tozer was in September 1877 and her age is shown as 22 years old which would make her birth date abt 1855. Her Christian names on my grandmother's birth certificate is listed as Louisa Maria but 'Maria' is not shown on the marriage certificate. Her father is called 'Charles'and the marriage was witnessed by Henry Oliver Guttridge who I believe may be her brother born in 1849. I'm completely stuck on this lady, can't find her birth or any details on any census prior to her marriage. Henry's surname is spelt either as Guthridge or Guttridge but despite trying several variations I can't find her. Would appreciate any info at all. Many thanks - Linda

Good evening Steve,

I am helping a lady in Missouri locate her lineage for a membership into the Daughter's of the American Revolution (DAR)

Her "patriot" was Allan Gutridge. The problem lies in that her mother; Lazona Ruth Cooper, was adopted.

Do you know if there are any other sons of Allan Gutridge beside the one that you posted that would be part of your family?

Her grandmother; Lazona Ruth Cooper died in Kansas around 1900.

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

thank you for your time,

Karen
Farmington, MO

Hi Tom,
Well, it is not my message board, but I did post a message here.

Since I have been looking into this surname I realize it is not common either.

My step-grandfather Frank had no children, however his brother, Ernest had a son named Jack Guttridge who did have children, probably born mostly in the 1950's.

I have no idea what happened to Jack and his family, he was good friends with my father Ernest Bond and my late uncle Bryce Bond when they lived in New Jersey and Long Island.

I believe Ernest Guttridge's side of the family lived in Pennsylvania for awhile as well.

Frank Guttridge's father, Frank Horton Guttridge, Sr. came over to America I believe in the 1880's.

I have been rather long winded here, forgive me.

Beth

Hi Brenda,
My step-grandfather's mother was named Edna and her maiden name was not Guttridge.

His father came from England, his father was the Guttridge, Frank Horton Guttridge, Sr.

Could be some relation though perhaps they were cousins.

I am confused about the Frank Guttridge you mention though wouldn't his last name not be Guttridge as that was his mother's maiden name? Or did she also marry a man surnamed Guttridge?

Thank you for posting the information. Maybe we will find a connection somewhere.

God bless,
Beth

Guttridges of Central California

I'm trying to trace the family of Thomas G. Guttridge, who was born in either OH or MO, about 1838. I believe he may have come with the Cook family from Cass County MO to Sonoma County California. He married Mattie Eleanor COOK in Sonoma in 1859, lived in Analy Township, Sonoma in 1860, in 1870 they were in Alisal twnship, Montery County, in 1875 they were in Santa Cruz. Children include: Ida, Luella, Alice Cary, Effie, and Grace Thomas Guttridge. Any info on any of these people would be greatly appreciated.

Beth: The Frank that I have knowledge of came over with Alice Maude Guttridge in 1898 on board the Campania from Liverpool. I believe she was either unwed mother, or he was a relative. I just found it so curious that Alice Maude had a brother called Ernest who remained behind in England and a nephew called Jack. Strange don't you think?

I wonder if you have connections with a family I am researching called Goodrick, Reuben, a faily uncommon name, is in that family too. The family were in Norfolk and some went to the Cambridgeshire area. Have you any thoughts on this theory?

The Norfolk accent is very difficult as it is very lazy, missing out sounds etc. I should know, I still live here!

Glynn

It is possible that we could be talking about the same family. My great-grandfather's name was Reuben Henry Guttridge, he was born on November 8, 1864 somewhere in England. His parents were Joseph and Louise Gutteridge, his siblings were Anna M. Guttridge Morris and Joseph Guttridge. The spelling is different on every legal document I come accross so I'm really not sure what the correct spelling or pronounciation is. I'm currently waiting for Reuben Henry's birth certificate from England.
Does any of this link with the information you have?
