I am looking for information on Charles Gwilliam. He was born around 1812 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. Charles had a son out of wedlock with Eliza Beynon. His name is Henry Beynon Gwilliam. Henry was born in 1835 in St. Mary, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England

Charles Gwilliam is my 3rd-great grandfather. I am unable to verify any information about him. It is assumed that Henry Beynon was the off spring of Charles and Eliza Beynon but I am not able to prove that. Also, I can not find any information on Charles' parents nor what happend to Charles after leaving Eliza.

My family records show that Charles Gwilliam and Eliza Beynon never married, but had a child, Henry Beynon Gwilliam on 7 May 1835 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. She later lived with long enough to be a common law wife to Thomas Phillips. They had other children. Eliza Beynon was christened 8 Nov 1814 in Parish of Shrewsbury, St. Julian, Shrewsbury, England and died 8 May 1900 in Albany, Albany, New York. Eliza Beynon's father was Richard Beynon by his 3rd wife, Jane Hill.
I show that Henry Beynon Gwilliam was born 7 May 1835 and married first Jane Fisher 1854 in Birmingham, England. She died 1855 Atchison, Kansas while crossing the plains. He married a second wife, Elizabeth Palmer on 31 March 1856. She died 22 Sep 1907. He married a third wife, Mary Ann Williams who was born 14 Dec. 1868, and she died 31 July 1889. He died 22 Sep 1907 in Hooper, Weber Co., Utah.
Charles Gwilliam was married to another woman and resided in the same parish where Eliza and children resided. Charles Gwilliam's name appears often in the same parish records. The Bishops Transcripts at Lichfield show Eliza was a single woman.

My father-in-law was Ray Whiteley Gwilliam, great great grandson of Henry Beynon Gwilliam through the 6th of 9 children. (Harry Chambers Gwilliam)
I typed the geneology for my mother-in-law in the early 1980's when she was putting together her 4 generation pedigree and family group sheets. She had original documentation of parish records because she hired an English geneologist to research Charles Gwilliam. Her information is as accurate as was available in the 1980's. I have listed documentation on my pedigree and family group sheet records. I believe it to be quite accurate. I have the 9 children listed as born to Henry Beynon Gwilliam and his 2nd wife, Elizabeth Palmer from 1857 to 1878.

I am a school teacher and therefore off work this week. However, next week brings enormous time pressures and little time to check internet.

Because we were checking for legitimate marriage and sealing lines and not just blood lines, we did not pursue Charles Gwilliam. Because he was married to someone else - we did not seal Eliza Beynon Gwilliam and Charles Gwilliam. We did not seal Henry Beynon Gwilliam to Charles Gwilliam because of that illegitimacy. We continued downward. Eliza had children later through Thomas Phillips and apparently they lived as common law husband and wife. Thomas Phillips was born in 1700 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. He died in 1880 in Willenhall, Stffrd., England. Thomas' father was named Benjamin Phillips. That is the patriarchal line that we have followed rather than the Charles Gwilliam line. I do not have the records beyond Charles, i.e. his parents and wife because of that reasoning. My mother-in-law may still have those parish records. She has moved numerous times since 1980 and has remarried when Ray Gwilliam died in 1987. I don't have access to those original records now. The Parish Records were from the Bishops Transcripts at Lichfield, and Parish of Shrewsbury Records. The cost for the English geneologist at that time was exhorbitant, but we found the information to satisfy us. I hope this helps in your search.

Which child of Henry Beynon do you come through?

As I am thinking about Eliza Beynon, I recall that the information stated that she was a seamstress in the same town as Charles Gwilliam. They did not move, but resided there for a long time. Thomas Phillips was also from the same area. I cannot remember now the names, but Eliza worked as a seamstress and that is how we connected and found her. They we pursued the Gwilliam name for a long time and concluded that Charles Gwilliam had to be the father of Henry Beynon, who took both names of Beynon and Gwilliam. I do not have that original paper trail, but again, I believe the work was researched as completely as possible by a local researcher. So - it sounds like you are trying to pursue back beyond Charles Gwilliam on his paternal line. I don't have much more on that right now.

I wanted to let you both know that a descendant of Henry Beynon Gwilliam got his DNA tested and his DNA matches that of Phillips Family Group 17. Therefore, my guess is Thomas Phillips was the father of Henry Beynon Gwilliam, not Charles Gwilliam.
