Hi Lee, I see you are researching the above and wondered if you could help me.
My great grandmother's maiden name was Gullam and in the 1881
UK Census for Liverpool (RG11/36/6) her birthplace is recorded as "
Milford,
Wales" and her age as 39.
In the last quarter of 1864 she married in Liverpool a Thomas Whittow (then a common surname it seems in Pembrokeshire) who worked as a tailor (at least that was his occupation when his third child, William Whittow, was born in Liverpool (as were his sister and brother) on 3rd August1868. I'm awaiting a copy of Martha and Thomas Whittow's marriage certificate which may cast light on their ages & parents' names.
By 1871 Martha Whittow (nee Gullam) was a widow, still living in Liverpool and there she and her children remained.
How she and her future husband landed up in Merseyside is a mystery although family legend is that Thomas Whittow(or may be a brother) ran away from home after being sent to Llanthony
Abbey in the Black Mountains. I think the Whittow family was very strict Nonconformist. If the tale is not true it should be!
Any information/suggestions will be appreciated. Cheers.
