Hello,

My name is Nancy Kiser and I am the volunteer adminstrator of the Phillips DNA project that has a website at this link: www.phillipsdnaproject.com

I wanted to let you both know that a descendant of Henry Beynon Gwilliam got his DNA tested and his DNA matches that of Phillips Family Group 17. Therefore, my guess is Thomas Phillips was the father of Henry Beynon Gwilliam, not Charles Gwilliam.

Sincerely,
Nancy Kiser

HIPA and Genealogy

How does HIPA (Health Information Privacy Act of 1999) relate to genealogical research? Are records of a person deceased for more than 70 years grandfathered into this act? I have attempted to retrieve hospital records for my great-grandmother who passed in 1937 but have been denied because of privacy. She had been institutionalized
since at least 1910 and died there in 1937. We have no idea why she was there. They said I would need to be the executor of the estate or go to court and be authorized at the administrator. Is there anyone with legalese who might know the answer to this question?

I posted a reply to this originally but left the wrong email address. I have found some more info. The Richard Gullam you speak off married a Mary Morse who are the ancestors of my wife. His parents were John Gullam and Phebe Williams. I beleive i have their parents as well, but need to confirm this as I have a wedding for harles Gullam and Margaret Sayse in St Ishmaels in 1774

Hi Joan. I tried to answer this earlier but it seems it didn't go through. If it shows up later just disregard this. I was at Holy Family Cemetary last week and for the first time I saw the headstone. My grandfather is John and bridgets son James. He is also buried there. I just started to do some research on the names, including your cousins. I am excited to hear from you and would be grateful for any information you would like to share. My email is mocsi@si.rr.com I'm rerally curious about how you came to know this info. I did take pictures of the headstone and was quite impressed by it. Do you know who had it refaced and if the spouses are also buried there. I was under the impression that my grandparents were buried together, but the only names that are there seem to be direct descendants. I look forward to hearing from you.

They are all buried in Drexel Hill Cemetery, The Avon Section, Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania. As my 'Gwilliam's' are also buried in and near The Avon Section I feel that these folk are probably relatives but unable to find any information on them. Also in the same lot are Charles W. Davis, Florence McGrance and Rufus G. Stephenson. The last 3 resided together in Penfield PA in 1930 with Charles Davis being the head of household, Florence McGrance his neice and Rufus G. Stephenson a lodger. Any information would be appreciated.

Hi Lee, I see you are researching the above and wondered if you could help me.

My great grandmother's maiden name was Gullam and in the 1881 UK Census for Liverpool (RG11/36/6) her birthplace is recorded as "Milford, Wales" and her age as 39.

In the last quarter of 1864 she married in Liverpool a Thomas Whittow (then a common surname it seems in Pembrokeshire) who worked as a tailor (at least that was his occupation when his third child, William Whittow, was born in Liverpool (as were his sister and brother) on 3rd August1868. I'm awaiting a copy of Martha and Thomas Whittow's marriage certificate which may cast light on their ages & parents' names.

By 1871 Martha Whittow (nee Gullam) was a widow, still living in Liverpool and there she and her children remained.

How she and her future husband landed up in Merseyside is a mystery although family legend is that Thomas Whittow(or may be a brother) ran away from home after being sent to Llanthony Abbey in the Black Mountains. I think the Whittow family was very strict Nonconformist. If the tale is not true it should be!

Any information/suggestions will be appreciated. Cheers.

John Gullam was my great grandfather. The name is now McGullam in the US. Richard Gullam ( Gwilliam ) appears to be his father. I haven't come across an Arthur although I had an uncle Arthur McGullam and my fathers family seemed to stick with family names. I have collected quite a bit of info on the Gullam. Richards parents may be Phoebe Williams and John Gwilliam. I lose track of them after the births of their children.

As I am thinking about Eliza Beynon, I recall that the information stated that she was a seamstress in the same town as Charles Gwilliam. They did not move, but resided there for a long time. Thomas Phillips was also from the same area. I cannot remember now the names, but Eliza worked as a seamstress and that is how we connected and found her. They we pursued the Gwilliam name for a long time and concluded that Charles Gwilliam had to be the father of Henry Beynon, who took both names of Beynon and Gwilliam. I do not have that original paper trail, but again, I believe the work was researched as completely as possible by a local researcher. So - it sounds like you are trying to pursue back beyond Charles Gwilliam on his paternal line. I don't have much more on that right now.

Re: Charles Gwilliam

Because we were checking for legitimate marriage and sealing lines and not just blood lines, we did not pursue Charles Gwilliam. Because he was married to someone else - we did not seal Eliza Beynon Gwilliam and Charles Gwilliam. We did not seal Henry Beynon Gwilliam to Charles Gwilliam because of that illegitimacy. We continued downward. Eliza had children later through Thomas Phillips and apparently they lived as common law husband and wife. Thomas Phillips was born in 1700 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. He died in 1880 in Willenhall, Stffrd., England. Thomas' father was named Benjamin Phillips. That is the patriarchal line that we have followed rather than the Charles Gwilliam line. I do not have the records beyond Charles, i.e. his parents and wife because of that reasoning. My mother-in-law may still have those parish records. She has moved numerous times since 1980 and has remarried when Ray Gwilliam died in 1987. I don't have access to those original records now. The Parish Records were from the Bishops Transcripts at Lichfield, and Parish of Shrewsbury Records. The cost for the English geneologist at that time was exhorbitant, but we found the information to satisfy us. I hope this helps in your search.

Which child of Henry Beynon do you come through?

Did you receive my message stating dates and facts? Do you have another e-mail address or telephone number?

My father-in-law was Ray Whiteley Gwilliam, great great grandson of Henry Beynon Gwilliam through the 6th of 9 children. (Harry Chambers Gwilliam)
I typed the geneology for my mother-in-law in the early 1980's when she was putting together her 4 generation pedigree and family group sheets. She had original documentation of parish records because she hired an English geneologist to research Charles Gwilliam. Her information is as accurate as was available in the 1980's. I have listed documentation on my pedigree and family group sheet records. I believe it to be quite accurate. I have the 9 children listed as born to Henry Beynon Gwilliam and his 2nd wife, Elizabeth Palmer from 1857 to 1878.

I am a school teacher and therefore off work this week. However, next week brings enormous time pressures and little time to check internet.
My husband is a geneologist and very active at the LDS family history center. We are currently researching another family line and just found your posting while I was browsing around one night.

You may call me this week or e-mail me at bestlesterson@hotmail.com or (903)566-0048 in Texas

It is appreaciated.

How are you related to Charles?

Do you have and/or can you tell me where I can get documentaton about Eliza Beynon and Charles?

You mentioned that Charles was married to another. Do you know who that was and do you have documentation. Did they have children?

Can you tell me the name of the parish and its location where you see Charles' name?

When did Charles die and where?

Do you know who Charles' parents are?

Do you have any documentation you can send me?

Tom Gwilliam
My family records show that Charles Gwilliam and Eliza Beynon never married, but had a child, Henry Beynon Gwilliam on 7 May 1835 in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. She later lived with long enough to be a common law wife to Thomas Phillips. They had other children. Eliza Beynon was christened 8 Nov 1814 in Parish of Shrewsbury, St. Julian, Shrewsbury, England and died 8 May 1900 in Albany, Albany, New York. Eliza Beynon's father was Richard Beynon by his 3rd wife, Jane Hill.
I show that Henry Beynon Gwilliam was born 7 May 1835 and married first Jane Fisher 1854 in Birmingham, England. She died 1855 Atchison, Kansas while crossing the plains. He married a second wife, Elizabeth Palmer on 31 March 1856. She died 22 Sep 1907. He married a third wife, Mary Ann Williams who was born 14 Dec. 1868, and she died 31 July 1889. He died 22 Sep 1907 in Hooper, Weber Co., Utah.
Charles Gwilliam was married to another woman and resided in the same parish where Eliza and children resided. Charles Gwilliam's name appears often in the same parish records. The Bishops Transcripts at Lichfield show Eliza was a single woman.

I have more info if you are interested. My husband works as a geneologist for the Church of Jesus Christ of LDS. I hope this helps you.

Charles Gwilliam is my 3rd-great grandfather. I am unable to verify any information about him. It is assumed that Henry Beynon was the off spring of Charles and Eliza Beynon but I am not able to prove that. Also, I can not find any information on Charles' parents nor what happend to Charles after leaving Eliza.

Any information you can provide would be appreciated

Tom Gwilliam

Hello
Thomas Gwillim and Mary Ann Gwillim are in my family history line. But unfortunatley I am stuck at this point. I have been in contact with Hazel Bright also doing this line she could have some more info for you. I am trying to prove that one of their children Charles (born approx 1850) is the brother of William (this is Hazels line)... but I am still unable to find his birth entry.
What is your family line?
By the way Charles's son Thomas-b.1896 (who was my grandfather )spelt his name Gwillym just like yours throughout his life, although it was registered Gwillim at his birth.
Hazel has her own website www.gizzmowales.tripod.com
try this and I am sure she will help you . If you do find anything out and visa versa about Thomas Gwillim and Mary Ann Gwillim we must stay in touch.

Kind Regards
Pat
Hi

I think I may have found your John Gwilliam and his father Richard in the 1861 Census. I am researching the family myself from Pembrokeshire. There are quite a few in the St Ishmaels area of Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire. Your John, if the right one, is in my line as well. His father was Richard Gwilliam (born abt 1824) and John's mother is Mary (maiden name Morse), born abt 1823. Email me if any of this rings a bell.
