Hi I'm continuing some research on the Burt family, which my great-great aunt had started. Her father was Fredrick Warren Burt b. 1865 in Ticonderoga. His father was Orlando, but that's where I'm stuck, she had Jane Thompson as Orlando's wife, but I haven't been able to make a solid link between Orlando/Jane Thompson Burt and Fredrick W. Do you folks have any info on the other siblings of Orlando/Jane Thompson besides Emma J. Thanks!
-Joe B

I do not have the parents for Phillip Hack. However, on the 1880 census from Fairview, Shelby, Iowa, William Hack b VA 1801 retired farmer, reported on that his father was born in Ireland, mother born VA. William Hack is in 1880 census with second wife Melinda Hack.

According to my records, this William Hack was the son of Phillip HACK and Susannah HUNTSMAN, thus indicating that his son believed Phillip was born in Ireland and immigrated to the US. (I believe HUNTSMAN is the correct spelling and the commonly mentioned Hurtsman was an error in transcription since there were Huntsmans in the area Susannah lived in, but no Hurtsmans.)

The Friend-Hack House in Milan, Michigan was built in 1888 by Olive Friend, niece of Mary (nee Case) Hack and her husband William Henry Harrison Hack (known as Henry Hack).

Bethuel Hack, born 17 Jul 1796 in Greenwich Town, Hampshire County, Massachusetts moved with his wife Sally (nee Paine) Hack to Monroe County, Michigan in 1832. Bethuel Hack was the father of Henry Hack.

Henry Hack purchased the Hack House (with farm land) in 1895. Henry died 17 Jun 1907 and the House went to his son James B. Hack. James lived in the house from 1895 to 1973 when James and his wife Daisy Mae (nee Cooper) Hack were no longer able to care for themselves. The House was in York Township, Washtenaw County, Michigan until the city of Milan annexed the land.

I believe this Hack Family came from England.

There is another Hack family from Germany who settled in Scio and Lodi Townships (Saline area), Washtenaw County, Michigan. John George Hack (born Jan 1813 in Germany), son of John George Hack came to Michigan.
Yes, this is the same family. I was told by a grandchild of Jacob and Rebecca that she had heard that the name was Krefman and changed to Kaufman at Ellis Island. However, the Polish record of Jacob and Rececca show the last name as Kaufman. Therefore, if it changed, it was changed in Poland before 1886.

As best known to me, Eiber and Estera Hack had sons Lejb, Chaim, Jacob and Szlomo. Lejb married Sura and had a son Eber. Chaim married Chan Mnicha and had a son Eber who married Henya Maria. Szlomo married Cypra Penzelak and had a son Szoel who married Eta. The son Jacob is the one that I have detailed info about. Jacob was born in Germany and died in 1855 Poland while his wife Gitel Gruzewski was pregnant with a son who was therefore also named Jacob. He also had sons Isak and Eber and a daughter Brandyl Leja.

My Barak Krefman family and the Jacob Hack (sr.) families migrated in the mid 1800's from east German (perhaps Leipzig) to Warsaw where a Hack and a Krefman who were brothers-in-law. opened a store. The store later closed over a financial dispute that led to a family fight that continued as late as the 1940's, as the descendents of Isak Hak and Jacob Hack (Jr,) migrated to Miedzyrzec and other eastern Poland cities in the late 1800's and then Detroit in the early 1900's.

Nonetheless, the Hacks and Krefman's belonged to the same tiny orthodox congregation in Detroit, Moshe Aaron, and portions of the families did get along. One Krefman cousin even visited and stayed with a Hack family in Florida in the 1950's.

Hello - I was very excited to read your posting on these two families! I am researching for a friend who descends from a daughter of Jacob Hack and Rebecca Kaufman. I just recently received the burial record for these two people.
Jacob Hack b.abt 1854 d. 1929 f. Jacob Hack m. Gittel ukn.;
Rebecca Kaufman Hack b.abt 1865 d. 1941 f. Isaac Kaufman m. Molly ukn.

The family is buried in Hebrew Memorial Park Cemetery in Detroit, MI. It seems very certain that this "Jacob Hack" is the same you have mentioned. Do you think "Kaufman" is actually "Krefman"?

Looking forward to hearing from you!
There are other census logs but they need to be looked up as only 1881/1891 are available freely.

FreeBMD Marriages Jun 1848
Hack William Farnham 4 143
FRY Harriett Farnham 4 143
IGI Marriage: 13 APR 1848 Farnham, Surrey, England

FreeBMD Deaths Mar 1884
Hack William 57 Farnham 2a 82

FreeBMD Births Sep 1857
Hack Charles Farnham 2a 73

1881

Name Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability
William HACK Head M Male 54 Farnham, Surrey, England Ag Lab Incapacitated
Harriett HACK Wife M Female 53 Farnham, Surrey, England
Charles HACK Son U Male 26 Farnham, Surrey, England Gardener Dom
Eli HACK Son Male 16 Farnham, Surrey, England Groom D.
John HACK Son Male 15 Farnham, Surrey, England Ag Lab
Josiah HACK Son Male 12 Farnham, Surrey, England Scholar

------------------------------------------------------------Source Information:
Dwelling Bourn
Census Place Farnham, Surrey, England
Family History Library Film 1341185
Public Records Office Reference RG11
Piece / Folio 0788 / 94
Page Number 52
==========================================
1891 Census
5 Records found

Piece: RG12/839 Place: East Preston -Sussex Enumeration District: 6
Civil Parish: Patching Ecclesiastical Parish: Patching
Folio: 101 Page: 5 Schedule: 31
Address: -
Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
HACK Charles Head M M 36 Gardener Domestic Servt(Em'ee) Surrey - Farnham
HACK Frances Wife M F 34 Sussex - Shipley
HACK Arthur William Son - M 3 Sussex -Patching
HACK Laura Dau - F 1 Sussex - Patching
HACK Harriet Mother W F 63 Needlewoman (Notem) Surrey - Farnham
