Charles, Edward Haddon

Is there anyone else researching who has Charles, Edward Haddon born c1897 in their family history? Charles married my Grandmother's older sister Mary, Ann Toomer in 1919, Wandsworth, London.

Mary and Charles had a son (also named Charles) in 1919 however, Mary tragically died in 1920 and it is believed that Charles was then looked after by one of his fathers relatives. Charles junior went on to marry Grace Webb in 1940 and they had twin sons Edward & Charles.

Please can you contact me if you can help at all? I do have a wedding photo who I believe is of Mary & Charles which would obviously be of interest to anyone researching the Haddon line.

Many thanks in advance.
Christine

Jonathan Stafford who is mentioned in documents with some of the Wilcox family (in 1690s) is likely a son in law of John Haddon. He married Elizabeth Haddon.

Hi Jane: I am really thrilled you posted on here as my original message was in 2009 and I only just had a response to it recently from Charles Pearce. It led me to go back and look at John Haddon, and I found something about his family on Dr. Peter H. Mackie's page on genealogy.com. Bretton is the first name of John Haddon's wife, and I believe she was a Cartwright before marriage. Could be Whalley, but I think more likely Cartwright. I live in Australia so I am limited in getting records such as you have done. I am so grateful, and I will send the information on to Dr. Mackie. He has a non-related relative who was an Owens-Haddon and his information came from an old history of the Owens family. This documentary evidence validates what he has on his site. Yes, I had found the clergy database reference. I would like to write to you some more about the project I am doing, and my address is gford1@bigpond.net.au. Thanks again, Gill Ford (I was a Wastell)

Hi Gillian Wastell,
I read your posting a few weeks ago. I'm doing research on the Wilcox family who lived in Wolston around the 1600. John Haddon was one of the witnesses to a Wilcox will (so we have a connection!)
I've just been back to the Warwickshire County records office to look at the parish records and found the followin entries.
'Francis and nicols ye sonnes of Mr John Haddon and Mrs Bretton his wife borne ye fifteenth day of August 1655'
'Bretton ye daughter of Mr John Haddon and Mrs britten his wife was borne ye same day and yeare'
'...ter ye sonne of Mr John Haddon and Mrs Bretton was .... the ... of December ... 1657' The last was very hard to read I'm afraid.
'Rachel the daughter of Mr john Haddon and Mrs Britton his wife was born the seventeenth day of september 1658'
Then, sadly, in the burials
'Mr John Haddon minister of Wollston buried ye ...Sept 1664'
There's also a heading for 1651 in the parish register for Wolston where a collection for the poor of Michelover is sent August 7th and John Haddon, minister, and two churchwardens and two helpers are mentioned. I think the writing is probably John Haddons.
Britton or Britten seems a very strange first name but I did my best to read what was there(she's a Mrs so they obviously were endowed with some freehold land and reasonably well off).
Hope this helps.
If you look at the http://www.theclergydatabase.org.uk website under Wolston parish, Lichfield and Coventry Diocese, you'll find the Liber Cleri and appointment records for John Haddon who was at Wolston under the Interregnum and only officially ordained Cof E minister in 1662!

I hope to be at the VA State Library on Sat to look up records on the Landreth and Haddon lines along with the possible death records of Albert Landers to see if he is the son of Evaline. I also found info from the Family Search site that Evaline had a second son ! Nov 1883 the Wise records record another child(no father recorded), also the site had both wedding records for Mazey.
A question that I have is where did the info on Lydia's death in 1888 in Princess Anne county come from? It's a long way from Wise. Also on Lydia did she get married in Wise after 1860 or did give the correct name for Mazey's father for the marriage with Lawerence Haddon? The name appears to be John M Moore(father name on the cert. J M Moore) and on the wedding Cert. and the next 2 US census Lydia gives the last name Moore. Did she change her last name because of Mazey's marriage to Dr Haddon? The 4 Children she had in Ashe NC all have the last name of White, and I found the record that one of the children was born a bastard(Ashe Co records), it appears that Lydia never married before her giving birth to her children. John White was one of the children and moved to Wise Co and started a Family.
I Am also looking for Evaline after 1880, Did she move, die, married?

On Calvin Landreth I did find his Civil War Records and a Chancery Court Record from Wise to show that he did live in Wise and the marriage record shows that he also was from Ashe Co. The Landreth name changes to Landers at times and I hope this is why I have not found the death record of Albert as of yet.

Michael Hall

Before my dad passed away he spent eight years telling me al about the haddons. After his death I found the house of Lawrence haddon and it is still standing. I walked around to the dairy room and his medical practice. I saw the outline of where the barn was and I spoke to an old woman who was a decendant of them who told me stories of them. I believe mazy died of influenza or tuberculoses, but I have yet to confirm. My grandmother Clara whitaker Reynolds wrote and told stories of the haddons, wishing them to never be forgotten. If there is anything specific you want to know, I may have the answer, but I am still looking for more myself.

Hello,

I have been to the Haddon cemetary and have some pictures of the tomb stones. Mazy appears to have been the first one buried on that hill her tomb stone says Mazy white Haddon 1841-1911 at rest. I also have a copy of the marriage certificate and it states that her husbands was john Landreth I do not know why. I believe mazy was indian, do you know if that was true? I also have copies of letter Lawrence wrote to his family in England and he talk about her and after her death you see the change in him. I think he loved her very much.

I am still looking into Calvin Landers (Landreth) there is no sign of Calvin on the Census but there is a William Landreth in Wise that appears to be (1860 Census) from Ashe, Nc (1850 Census) that may be the same person. Calvin Landers is on the record as fighting in the Civil War from Wise and surviving. Someone else on this Forum I believe had stated they had a marriage cert. for this event. Calvin is the first husband of Mazy and they appear to have had one daughter, Eveline. Eveline also appears to had a son that has her last name (child out of wedlock?). This child appears to me to be Alfred Landers which married into the Hall family line I am working on.

Mazy appears to died on july 17, 1911 and born on april 11, 1841 nad is buried in a unmarked grave in the Haddon Family grave site.

If any one has any other info on Calvin I would like to get it to prove my theory.

Michael Hall
Mike Here
If you check the 1880 Census for the DR you will see listed the people listed by me lower and the household. I found the info on the first marriage in Wise NC where they lived at that time before moving up to VA (Mazy White). If you check the 1860 Census for Mazy you will find the first time of the daughter.
the 1880 Census has the name for Alfred as the same last name Landers, his mothers last name. No father is found.
If this is the same Alfred Landers he reappears in Louisa Co. married to Elizabeth Hall and fathers 3 children but diappears again inbetween 1910-1920 from the family. He does appear in directories for Richmond working as a Clerk but is dead by 1920 (elizabeth is Wd on the census).

Michael Hall

James Haddon b. 1808, Leicester, Eng. d.1888, Phil., PA

His death cert. at Phil., PA., U.S.A., says his parents are named James and Elizabeth. It also says he was born in Leicestershire, Eng (stated exactly that way) in 1808. Does anyone out there know anything of this family or its origins? I am not even sure if those are even his parent's names or not. One thing I know for sure is that he had an uncle named Samuel that was also born in England and died in New Jersey in 1854 and that his uncle Samuel also had a niece named Elizabeth Kraft (maybe James Haddon's sister). Any info or even some insight would be most appreciated.

I am researching a line descending from Thomas Haddon (1837-1918) through his daughter Sarah Ann (born 1860).

I am also interested to know more about the origins of his screw and rivet making business. I believe his father was Samuel Haddon or Haden (1814-1884), who is recorded as a frame work knitter in the 1851 census - humble origins for the successful screw maker!

I am also intrigued to know that Thomas had two families - I see Mary Haddon and her twin daughters in the 1871 census. Be interested to know the evidence for Thomas being the father - Mary has taken his surname for herself and her children, although presumably not married.

Kind regards

Tony Campbell

I am from Atlanta, Georgia area. However, I am descended from the Welborns of Terrell and College Mound, Kaufman Co., Texas. My grandfather is Samuel Angus Welborn (Sr.) and my father Sam Welborn, Jr. My great grandfather is James Wesley Welborn, born in Hardin Co., Tennessee on December 6, 1845, to Levi Welborn and Maranda J. Crabb. Who are your Welborn ancestors?

I'm not sure - I haven't heard of an Edwin, but it's certainly possible that they are related. If I run across him, I'll let you know. By the way, my mom's maiden name is Welborn. Do you mind if I ask where you are from? My Welborns live in Laurel, Mississippi and before that, the Carolinas.

I am the eldest son of Leslie Reginald Haddon, I have copies of the death certificates for Orlando Haddon and Ann nee Persey. Orlando's certificate (1881)details Mary Ann as his eldest daughter. Mary Ann married James Small. Ann's (nee Persey) certificate (1886)details son in law James Small as the informant. I have been to Blackborough where Orlando and Ann were married. While there in 1988 I met the Persey family who still live on New Hallows farm about 2 miles from the site of the Blackborough Church. Hope this helps.

Could your man be the son of a London solicitor, called Thomas Haddon, who bought Old Park at St Lawrence, Isle of Wight in 1820 and between 1820 and 1832 created it into a "gentleman's marine residence"? Old Park is now a hotel, but a fine new house and garden nearby carry the name Haddon Lake House.
My main interest is in a clifftop area at Shanklin, some ten miles away, called Haddon's Pits. It was apparently once a stone quarry. It was bought by National Trust in 1977 with a bequest from Lydia Wigginton-Smith. NT do not know the history of Haddon's Pits, and I would like to research it.
The Haddon family (if it is the same) seem to gather properties named after them!
www.child-friendly-hotel.com/history.htm
Do let me know whether this is relevent.
Oliver

Thanks for your prompt reply. I have managed to find Ann Pursey on the IGI marrying Orlando. However I have found that not all IGI info is correct, particularly in Devon (specially pre 1813). Other info I have been tracking/chasing seems to confirm the Pursey surname so I may just have to believe!

Hi Doe,

I've found at least six William Haddon's dates between 1754 and 1888. Can't see a William Edwin or a Florence Sutor though. This must be a different Haddon line or a branch from it. It looks like my family of Haddon originated from Shropshire then as time went on and for one reason or another found themselves living in Woodcock Street, Aston near Gosta Green. Does this mean anything in your own researches?

Just a tip, be aware of the name Haddon being mispelt. I've come across it a couple of times and it can really throw you so keep digging until you have the right person.

Bye for now
Twirls

Re: Haddon family in Warwickshire, Aston, and Birmingham

Hi Doe,

Thank you for you message. My apologies for the delay in responding. I have six William Haddon's and not one was born about 1829. I don't have any mention of an Eliza Allen either. My Haddon's, as yours come from Aston so there maybe a connection here somewhere along the line. If I can be of any help with your Haddon's please let me know.

Best wishes
