Sorry but this Jesse Haley is not a member of my direct line. I have a direct descendant named Sterling Hailey but by this time, he had left the Virginia area. I am aware of the Sterling in Halifax and I feel he is probably the same Sterling S Haley on the 1840 Putnam County Georgia Census.

Sterling is a very unusual given name and my Sterling Hailey from Brunswick County Virginia is probably the earliest Haley/Hailey with that given name. He also named a son Sterling but they went to Gibson County Tennessee. That origial Sterling had a number of brothers whom I have not followed up. That the Sterling and Jesse that you mentioned may be from one of them is possible. However, the spelling of Hailey had become fairly consistant by that time.

Sorry I can't be more help.

I am researching Jesse Haley (1803-1869) of Halifax County, VA. In 1824 Jesse Haley first appears in the tax records. Also listed is a Sterling Haley. In 1825, a Jesse, Sterling,William and Mary Haley all appear in the the tax records. Backing up to 1822 and 1823 a Polly Haley appears in the records. All are in the same tax district (the Henry Terry district) and close to each other on the page. Have you found any evidence of a Jesse Haley in your research? I believe a relationship does exist, but I am not sure how exactly.

Thanks!

Hi! My name is Mike Hailey. I live in Clovis, NM. Willard G. Hailey was my uncle. I don't have a great deal of information about him, especially his time in the Navy. If there are any specific questions that you have, let me know and I will see what I can find out on this end. My father is James L. Hailey (1930-1962). The last surviving brother (Homer L. Hailey) died in 2010 in Clovis, NM.

I am doing work for the family of Charlotte Hailey Summers. She is the daughter of William Leo Hailey whose sister was Sadie and father was William Hailey.

We just received Sadie's death certificate in the mail. She died 12/15/1926 "Sadie Work" after marrying Charles Roy Work in 1919. (She died of Tuberculosis at the age of 28.) They had a son in 1917 named Roy Hailey Work. Sadie divorced JW Rash in 1917 and after finding record of her son, we realized why the Rash divorce. Sadie is buried a family cemetery which is now in the middle of a subdivision in Brentwood, TN and for some reason her tombstone has the name RASH.

Sadie M. Hailey Rash married Joseph Wilburn Rash on 17 Jan 1915 in Williamson County, Tennessee. Sadie was born on 12 Dec 1897 in Williamson or Rutherford County. (The county lines changed and I'm not sure when her parents moved to Eagleville which is now in Rutherford County) She died 6 Dec 1926 probably in Williamson or Davidson County and is buried in the Brooks Cemetery in Williamson County. The death information is from the "Directory of Williamson County, Tennessee Burials", Vol. I, (1973), pg. 29.

Chelsea was my friend. We had finished Cosmetology school together the year before she died. She had become pregnant by her boyfriend. She went to South Dakota to live with him near his family. She told me they didn't like her (this was way before she fell pregnant). She told me the boyfriend's father told her he would make sure she got nothing. She called me several times upset about different issues like the threat the boyfriend's father made. She was also upset about the fact the boyfriend's parents had apparently picked out the suitable girl for their son and she ruined it by falling pregnant. She said she found him once in a local cafe (apparently it was a small farming community) sitting with this girl. She also was upset about the boyfriend's father who was a OBGYN wanting to be her physician during the pregnancy.
I was told over the phone by her boyfriend she had died in a car wreck. He said she was driving his pickup truck on a dirt road and rolled it and because she wasn't wearing a seatbelt she fell out of the truck and it crushed her pelvis. He said she wasn't found for 30 minutes then was rushed to the local hospital where he said his father helped the ER personnel try and save her life. Then according to the boyfriend they life flighted her to Grand Rapids where they took her to surgery opened her up and couldn't do anything for her but close her up. She was five months pregnant.
At the funeral there was NO mention of a baby that died too. Just the fact Chelsea died. She was young and stylish but they put her in a black dress suitable for an old woman. She was a natural type of girl, no heavy make up or big hair but they gave her both. They tried telling people her body was "swollen" from the accident. I sat and watched these girls that were suppose to be Chelsea's friends fawn over her boyfriend. -- too much. When I went to pay my respects there was a woman and man standing off to the side where you exited. As I went by the man says snidely to the woman "Why are you crying?" Like she was being a hypocrite.
All this made me so sick I didn't go to the funeral. My friend wasn't in that coffin and these people weren't celebrating who she was when alive.
She has really rested on my heart over the years and I wouldn't be surprised to find she was murdered. Too many things not kosher. 1) Why was the boyfriend's father even allowed to touch her in the ER? That is a huge no-no in medicine as the child she carried was his grandchild. 2) When they flew her to Grand Rapids, doctors don't send a patient into surgery in her condition open her up and realize there is nothing they can do. Now again this came from the boyfriend. 3) When the boyfriend's father said she would never get a dime of his money or Jason's he did say it would be over his dead body. 4) Why would Jason's father want and insist to be her OBGYN? Another big no-no in medicine.

Surname Haley

I am looking for info on my grandmother's family. Her name was Mary helen Haley. She was born 1915 and died 1996. SHe married Edward Mandel and was divorced later. Her mother was Alice L Haley, born 1882, died 1956. I believe her father was Michael B Haley, born 1870, died 1934. She had a brother Ervin M Haley, 1910-1968, sister Madonna Haley 1917-1998, sister Eileen Haley, not sure of dates for her. Also a brother Thomas Haley, not sure of dates. The cemetary where they are all buried is outside of New Richmond WI. There is a tombstone for Cornelius Haley, died 2-24-1878 at 80 yrs. Also on same stone is Daniel J Haley, died 5-20-1898 at 21 yrs. I believe Cornelius was born in Ireland, but not sure. Any additional information would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Origin of Hailey Name

The Heiligs originally settled Rowan County in NC in 1780s and owned a large number of slaves. Some Heiligs moved to Anson County before the Civil War and joined other than Lutheran churches so there may be some Heiligs who changed their names to Hailey in Anson County. This is interesting because I am married to a descendant of the VA Highleys. Reid Heilig

I went to your website and found the Hailey families who owned my husband's ancestors. My husband and his family now own the land they worked. They have 89 of the acres of land they worked on for so many years. We have yet to nail down which one of the slaves in the wills on your site, owned by your family is his actual ancestor. We will probably know that this summer. His mother and I are going to sit down and look in the "family Bible". Thank you so much for your help.

My husband's father is Lexie Ray Hailey and his mother is Josephine Smith. K.C. and JoJo are "distant cousins". I guess you are a relative somehow. My husband's mother was threatened by the KKK when she was carrying my husband. My father in law has many brothers and cousins there in the Lilesville, Peachland, Wadesboro area in North Carolina. Give me some more details on your parents, grand parents and great grandparents and I can probably link it all up for you some how.

I read this to my husband and we had a great laugh. His name is Kenneth Hailey. He is African American and from the Hailey's in Anson County North Carolina. They took their owner's name and kept it as many slaves did. My maiden name is Hawley and we are of German descent and my father's family is from the Pennsylvania area. hmmmmm....is my husband actually my cousin? I guess it's a small world afterall and I am my own grandma.

Origin of Hailey Name

Food for thought! The earliest record I have found of a Hailey surname was in the case of an Ursula Hailey, daughter of John and Agnes Scott Hailey in the early 1700s in PA(?) evidently. Ursula is an uncommon English Christian name but a common German one. Three Heilig brothers Henrich, George and John along with a sister Anna Ursula came about 1720 to PA. George changed his name to Highley and his offspring further anglicized it to Harley and then to Hawley. The brother John dissapears. Could this name Hailey be a change by John but he named his daughter after his sister or mother. The Heiligs in part then went to NC in the 1780 and in part on then Il and later farther West. Their trip to NC was down the Great Wagon Road through the Valley of Virginia. Could some of these Haileys in VA and NC be in fact Heiligs. This may be a place to look if you have hit a brick wall. The Heiligs have pretty much stayed Lutheran so there are excellant records but if those who anglicized their names also changed their church it becomes very hard to track back. There may not be any substance to this supposed name change but it is worth investigating if you have come up against a brick wall.
