Hi Vicki,
Yes, I guess we are related! I do know we had a relative that went to Australia. My grandmother, Eva Hails, was the daughter of George Hails, son of Richard and Abby, who was Robert's son. She died when my dad was about 20 so I never knew her. I grew up in Oxnard, Calif. where she spent her adult life. It has been fun to go back home and visit places the Hail's lived and their graves. Would love to hear from you and about your side of the family! 54merc@cox.net
Sincerely,
Cousin Janet

Dear Vicki,
Yes, Richard Hails is my great great grandfather! How exciting to find a relative, no matter how distant! My grandmother died when my dad was 20 years old so I never got to see hear any Hails history first hand. Her sister's son will be 90 this summer and I have learned a little about my great grandfather from him. My dad passed away 9 years ago before I started researching. If you have any history of Robert or the family I would love to hear it! Our Hails are nearly all gone. I plan to someday travel to England/Wales to visit places, graveyards, and look for records. Thanks so much for contacting me! My email address is: 54merc@cox.net Tell me about your side of the family.
Sincerely,
Janet Pyne
Hi Janet and Dick

I believe we share Hails ancestry - if you are both descended from Richard (son of Robert) who was married to Abigail Jones.

I am descended from Robert's brother, John. My ancestor, Robert was John's grandson and he migrated to Australia in 1876.

Kind regards

Vicki

Hello, cousin Rex! I trust this finds you well and still interested in family history. I was looking for information on our grandmother and ran across your post on ancestry.com. I recognized you from your Beaver Falls address and your post about Aunt Mary and Hails castle. In 1979 we were on vacation in Scotland and made a point of visiting Hails castle near Edinbourgh - it was exactly as I recall my mother, Sue Felder Cobb Smith, describing it right down to the pit prision. I have some photos of the castle. I also have all the family history and geneology that my mother researched and developed. I am trying to find information about our Uncle Joe (Jody) Cobb whom I last saw in 1960. My address is 907 Alamo Road, Alamo Springs, Fredericksburg, Texas 78624 and phone is (830) 992-2122.
my very best regards,
- Rolf Smith

Hi Roxane,

Thanks for this info. I'm so glad I found you because just this corrected a bit on information I was working from. I had Sarah married to Allen Allhouse. Wrong first name and missing an 's' I have that Sarah was born around 1914 - could you confirm a date for me. I also have 4 children for her and a second husband, 1 child by that husband for a total of 5. I have nothing about their spouses or children and from meeting you, I know they have some. You can email me directly at dandetaub@hotmail (.com) and I'll tell you more about my line if you're interested.

Mary Ann Toal Hails died June 25, 1921. Thomas died June 1967 and they were married Oct 16, 1901 in Westmoreland Co. Mary Ann was born June 11, 1875 in Durham, Wolsingham, England. How did you find John's death date?

I think it's funny that twice in the same line women married a Muir who was killed early in life only to remarry and intertwine again. Mary Patton married John Muir, who died in 1873 and then Mary married Robert Hails. Then Mary Ann Toal married a Muir who dies 20 years after the first and she marries a Hails. I understand the connection since the Toal's were marrying Hails and all were miners in the same area but I think the Muir coincidence (again while understandable as miners in the same area) is still amazing.

Hi... my grandfather was Walter Muir Hails-born 1/10/1897 and died 2/12/1982.(he was one of six children, robert, edna, ethyl homer and clyde) His father was Robert Muir Hails (married to Sarah Toal Hails) and was born 9/3/1973 and died 9/28/1951... this is where it gets tricky.. My great grandfather Robert Muir Hails's real father was John Muir.. John Muir died and I think it was John Rober Hails that raised him so therefore Robert took on the Hails name... does anyone know of this occuring? Please let me know. You are more than welcome to email me.
Thank you,
Linda Muir Hails

Grandson: Thomas Hails the son of my daughter Elinor Hails.
Exors: William McNichol, James & Robert McKelvey, sons of the late Alexander McKelvey. Wit: James Flint, Francis Geer, Jane Marley
This must be the family of Hails/McNichols you descend from.
I am also researching this family, would like to hear from you.
Stan Freeman
Robert,

It's always nice to find a new cousin. I am a descendant of Robert Hails also, through his eldest daughter, Eleanor McNichol.

I was wondering where your information showing Robert's first wife as a McKinney came from. I have a letter Sarah Bozier Hails Bellinger wrote to my great-grandmother in 1895 and she identifies Robert's first wife as Elizabeth McNichol.
This Sarah would be George Willoughby Hails sister.

Eleanor McNichol m. Peter Witten
Their daughter Elizabeth McNichol Witten m. Dr. James
Hunt Taylor.

Dr. James H. Taylor and his family moved to Montgomery AL from Columbia SC in 1834.

Several years ago I was in Montgomery doing research and I happened to go to St John's Episcopal Church, where the Taylors, Hails & related families worshipped. The church secretary at that time was a Hails descendant.

I am currently trying to find information about the hospital that Sarah Hails Bellinger founded in Montgomery during the War Between the States. I can't find where Dr. Taylor & his son Witten (also a surgeon) are during the War. All the rest of the sons are in Confederate service, and I figure it makes sense that might be working as civilians in Sarah's hospital.

I'd be happy to share what I have with you.

Carol

I am descended from a Henry Felder who came into Orangeburg area in 1740. Somehow, the Hails family mixed with the Felder line, as My Grandmother, Sue Hails Cobb bore the name, and told me the name Bozier was also in her background. I have a good bit of informatioin on the Felder side, but wonder: did the Hails line migrate to Montgomery? And, of course do you have a record of the marriage in which to two lines joined. Incidentally, an aunt of mine went to England years back and found a Hails Castle (considerable disrepair) Thanks for any help you can give. lMy address in 612 Darlington road, Beaver Falls, Pa. and phone 724-846-7450

Diane:
Nice to see your message. I came upon it on a websearch on Google.

My name is Richard W. Hails. My great-great grandfather moved from England to Mass. and on to Santa Barbara, CA (in the 1870's). I know that I am related to Richard O. Hails, who lives or lived in the Pittsburgh area and has several children (including Malcolm and Duncan?). His wife is/was "San", who my mother, June Hails, used to correspond with. Are you related to these Hailses?

My mother moved from Glendale, CA to Chapel Hill, NC to be near my family 5 years ago. I have lived in nearby Durham, NC for 23 years.

I don't know too much about our UK history, but I did visit the Hailes Castle, which is east of Edinburgh, Scotland (near Haddington), last summer. It is a park site with castle ruins. My mom visited a Hails Abbey in England 10 years ago (not sure where).

I have two brothers - Alan Hails lives in Bogota, Colombia and has two sons (Daniel and Philip) living in NC. My younger brother Robert Hails lives in Ft. Wayne, IN. he has two daughters, Lisa and Jessica.

Good luck,
Dick

Hi Robert, Let me tell you about what has been passed down through my family. There were two Hale(Hail, Haile, Hales) brothers who were from England. They somehow ended up in Dublin, Ireland; i'm not sure why, it could have been because of the war that was foing on. It was in the 1600's. These two brothers were so hungrey that they stole a loaf of bread; a hanging offense if caught. So they jumped on a ship going to America. They were stowaways (so there is probably no record of there passage). No one seems to know where the ship docked in America. One of the brothers sett;ed in North Carolina and the other went to on South. I know that Samuel Hales was in Beaver Dam, Bladen Co. at the time in 1750. One of his sons was named John who married Francis West (not sure) and one of their sons was named William(Bill) Hales, who married Abigail Jones( daughter of Levi and Elizabeth Jones). They also had a son named John who went to live in S.C. or Ga. William named his baby son from his marriage to Abigail Thomas Jefferson Hales (my great-great grandfather). Do you think the two brothers came in at Charleston(callled Charles Towne in 1600's)? Have you ever heard this story before? If you have ant info please send iy yo me. Thanks Linda

Has anyone ever run across a "HAILLS" and thought it might be a misspelling of Hails?

My gggggrandfather was Robert Haills who apparently came "from the Carolinas." His son, John LYDE HAILLS, was born in 1823 "in the Carolinas" according to his obituary, but was orphaned circa 1840 when his father, ROBERT HAILLS, died in Warren County (Vicksburg, MS). When Robert died in 1840 he left John with some property and several slaves, so he obviously was from the South. He married Elizabeth Jane BOLLS in 1848. John Lyde Haills (Sr.) died in Utica, Mississippi, in 1892; reportedly, Elizabeth Jane died circa 1920, but I can find no record -- or anything, for that matter.

The LYDE middle name was passed on to John Lyde Haills' son, John Lyde Haills, Jr., who was born in 1856 in Utica, MS. He married Catherine Cabaniss in Utica. He died in 1922 in San Francisco; she died in 1933 in Minneapolis.

I know that this is a long shot, but after 20 years of looking, I'm willing to gamble on about anything.

Harvey McIntyre
P.
I am looking for information about Robert Hails and his wife, Sarah Boschiere (or Bosher or Boschier). I believe that he was the father of my gggg grandmother, Susanna Hails. She might have been first married to a Richardson and then married my gggg grandfather, John Murphy. He was a lawyer in South Carolina and then became governor of Alabama. He and Susanna had at least two children, Duncan Witten Murphy and John Murphy. Susanna left John Murphy a widower. He remarried a Sarah Darrington Carter, the widow of Robert William Carter. Sarah Darrington was the daughter of Robert Darrington and Ann Rees.

Your ancestor search

Dear Diane,
My maiden name was Hails, and in trying to find out a little about my own family, I came across your message about your grandfather. My own grandfather was called Richard Angus Hails, he was in fact adopted by the Hails family and his own name had been Angus, which was then incorporated as his middle name - and in fact the name he was known by. They lived in North Shields, on the north bank of the River Tyne not far from the coast, and my parents still live only about a mile down the road.
I'm afraid that I personally don't know much more than this about the history of the family ar whether there may be a connection. But as Christmas is coming and families get together, I shall be asking around. If you're still conducting your search please e-mail me.
By the way, my father is also called Richard Angus, it seems to have been a bit of a tradition to call son's Richard throughout the generations.
Best wishes for your investigation,
Yours, Marie Valentino nee Hails

Came to Pittsburgh in the early 1990's. Brothers and sisters Hannath, John, Mary Jane, Mary Ellen, Elizabeth, Richard,George Nelson,Robert, and Jane. Some of the children were adopted. They were from the Durham, England area and some of the children may have stayed in England.
