Patrick Halleck

This Patrick was born in New York City around 1853. His parents were Patrick and Eliza. He was living with his parents and brothers in Manhattan in 1870, but in 1880, either he, or someone with similar genealogical data was imprisoned in Sing Sing. There is family history lore which tells of a Halleck involved in criminal activity.
I am the sister of the previous poster, Cynthia (Levanah) Tenen, and I just spotted your post on a Google search. I'm very interested in corresponding with you about my father Audry Vance Hallack, and your grandfather. Was this Wayne? That's the only name I know of a brother of my father; I don't know whether there was more than one brother, or not. I'd like to correspond off-line if possible, but I'm not certain how to pass you my regular email address! It has been several months, so I'll just watch this space to see if you check in. Happy Thanksgiving! --Levanah

I would like to tell you:
My mother told me years ago that her grandmother Kovich married an Adam Halleck in the late 1800s. His wife had died leaving him many children to care for. Two of his sons, Ted and Ed, came to live with Pauline and Fred Sandner in Detroit in the 1920s as young adolescents.
Ed Halleck left Detroit after marrying Doris and moved to Florida. Ted left in later years and went to live with Verne and/or Kate Wells in Florida. My mother Virginia came many times to Alpena to visit the family.
If you have any information, I am interested.

halleck family lineage in Ohio

I am looking for the parents of my great great grandmother Hulda Halleck. She resided in Rome county Ohio in 1850 and was born in Ohio. She married John Hedges of Ohio June 8, 1850. They moved to Kansas. I cannot make the connection with General Halleck. My information came from my great grandmother's family bible. Hulda was born feb 8th 1828 in Ohio. I have been trying to find Hulda's parents and John Hedges as well for many years without results. Any information or tip would be greatly appreciated.

I know you posted this a long time ago but there is a Baldwin family that is married into the PULLIS family on Long Island (NY). Peter PULLIS married a Charlotte HALLOCK. Charlotte is descended from the earliest settlers of eastern long island. She is also a distant cousin to Henry Wager HALLECK (a military leader during the Civil War). Hope this helps.

JOSEPH HALLECK in Tawas City 1900

I am researching the JOSEPH HALLECK family shown on the 1900 Iosco Co MI census, living in Tawas City:

Joseph HALLECK - b. May 1853 Poland, immigrated 1885
Felkis (Phyllis) HALLECK b. Jun 1864 Poland
Philif (Philip) HALLECK b. May 1885 Poland
Frances HALLECK b. Apr 1888 MI - m. Robert J. Smith in 1912
Lottie HALLECK b. Mar 1891 MI
Eddie (Edmund) HALLECK b. Feb 1893 MI
Leo HALLECK b. Jul 1894 MI

If someone can put me in touch with descendants of Joseph and Phyllis, please ask him/her to contact me. Or if someone has researched this family back to Poland, please contact me.

I believe the above Joseph HALLECK is related (perhaps a brother) to Joseph Adam HALLECK who is also in Tawas City in 1900. That census shows Adam as "Otams Hallack".

Adam's Polish surname is KSIAZKIEWICZ (there are a number of spelling variations of this surname!)

Adam's wife, Mary Kujawa, died c1897 and the family story is that he could not care for his six children after their mother died, so some were sent to live with a HALLECK family, while others were sent to an orphanage in Alpena.

Adam's children were going to school with the HALLECK children. The teacher could not pronounce their Polish surname, so told them, "You are living with the Hallecks -- your name is HALLECK!"

We believe this is how Adam's Polish surname came to be changed to HALLECK.

My question is: Why did Joseph and Phyllis have the surname HALLECK when they also were from Poland? What was the original Polish surname?
My name is Vickie Lasley, and I am searching for information on Israel Halleck (born about 1787 in Long Island, NY; died Nov. 14, 1865, in Wheatland Township, Hillsdale Co., MI). He was married to Laura Jennings (born about 1798 in Truxton, NY; died April 12, 1882, in Hillsdale Co., MI). According to “Portrait and Biographical Album of Gratiot County, Mich.” by Champan Brothers, p. 464, Israel Halleck was a relative of General Henry W. Halleck. Whether they were brothers or cousins, I do not know at this time.

Israel and Laura Halleck had the following nine children:

1.	Hardin Halleck (b. 1/2/1818 in Ontario, NY, d: 8/24/1897) married Helen Martha Wood (b. 11/30/1826 in Macedon, NY; d: 11/4/1898 in Wheatland Twshp., Hillsdale Co., MI) on 10/20/1859 in Wheatland Twshp., Hillsdale Co., MI.

2.	Susan Halleck (born between 1817-1820 in NY, died 6/10/1895 in Iosco Twshp., Livingston Co., MI) married Martin R. Foster.

3.	Philo Halleck (born about 1823).

4.	Abigail Jennings Halleck (born 2/4/1827 in Wayne Co., NY; died 6/8/1904 in IL) married Andrew Jackson Center (born 1/29/1825 in Wayne Co., NY; died 12/15/1869 in Du Quoin, Perry Co., IL) in August of 1845. (This is my GGGGrandmother.)

5.	Lucretia Halleck (born about 1829).

6.	Clarissa Halleck (born 7/3/1832 in Wayne Co., NY) married on 2/12/1852 Darius Ingalsbe (born 4/13/1827 in Ontario Twshp., Wayne Co., NY).

7.	Lydia A. Halleck (born about 1834).

8.	Nathan Halleck (born about 1837).

9.	Mary Halleck (born about 1839).

It is believed that Israel’s father is Nathan Halleck, but at this point I have no proof of that. Do you have any data on any of these people in relation to your Halleck information?

I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Re: Abigail Jennings Halleck, b 1827 NY

Abigail Jennings Halleck, b. 2-4-1827 was my great-great-grandmother. She was born in Wayne Co, NY and died 6-8-1904. Her parents were Israel Halleck a stonemason from Treachy Wales, who built houses on Lake Erie, her mother was Laura Jennnings from Yorkshire, England. both partents lived to their 80s. Abigail's siblings were named Filo, Harding, Van, Henry (Hank), Nathan, Susan, Clarisa, Lucretia, Maggie, and 4 others! She eloped in august 1845 to marry Andrew Jackson Center (b. 1-29-1825- d.12-15-1869), who was a sailor on Lake Erie. his sibs were De Loss (Delos), Clark, Nancy, Celeste, and Serphina. Abigail and Andrew went to Greenfield Ohio and then southern michigan in 1849, and in 1858 took a covered wagon to homestead in Jackson, Missouri. Andrew was a rebel and joined Bowman's Missouri Battery in the civil war. He was captured and sent to a pow camp in the Great Lakes, but his brothers, who were Yankees, helped him escape. Abigail was artistic, and a teacher, herbalist, and midwife. They had 5 sons, Perry, Frank, Eugene, Charley, and George, and a daughter Imogene.

C.A. Halleck, Charles Augustus Halleck Virginia with New York ties

The rumor goes that my Great Grandfather Charles Augustus Halleck was born at sea. His parents may have been Charles and Alice Halleck. Supposedly from England but I have found in Census records he has listed his parents as being from Northern Ireland. LDS has a spcific birthdate that came from an obit that I have but since finding this I have found two other birth years. I have the following birth dates 3-31-1871, 1869 and Jan 1974 coming from oral history from my Grandmother his daughter. He married Viola Bunch "Aunt Bunch" Simpson. The rumors go his mother died and his father placed him in an orphanage in New York or the father remarried died and the stepmother placed him in orphanage . He supposedly had other siblings. One was old enough to go to Virginia and he sent for his siblings and they ran away from New York and went to Virginia. Probably Clifton Forge/Covington VA area. Some of them were Railroad people. Would love to find some of his siblings descents that might have more information.

Abigail Jennings Halleck, b 1827 NY

I am looking for information on the parents and siblings of Abigail Jennings Halleck, b abt. 1827 in New York. She ran away and married Andrew Jackson Center, b abt. 1825 in New York. They had seven children who were born in Michigan, Ohio and Illinois. I am descended from their son George Halleck Center, b 2/25/1825 in Ohio, d. January 1939 in DuQuoin, Perry Co., IL.

The only information I have on Abigail’s parents are their names, Israel Halleck and Laura Jennings. They apparently lived in New York, but that is all the information I have on them. Any information would be appreciated.
William C. HALLECK - MI or NY

I'm looking for information on a William C. HALLECK who was a sergeant in Co D, 5th MI Calvary during the Civil War.

He is supposed to have died on the General Lyon in 1865, but filed for a pension in 1890 in NY. Since I have an ancestor that did the same thing I'm checking on other victim/survivors.

Either my ancestor, Lawrence Everett, returned from the dead after being missing for 25 years, or there was pension fraud involved. If I can find someone else who was miraculously raised to receive a pension I'll feel better about assuming that mine really did die in 1865.

Hallock/Halleck - Orange, NY

I have an old photo album which contains many tin types and other pictures of Halleck/Hallock ancestors. There is a picture of President Lincoln on his Deathbed in the back of the album. I was always curious about this, so I began to investigate. It may be that my GGGGGrandmother, Margaret Hallock, was somehow related to General Henry Halleck who was present at the death of President Lincoln. I have been unable to make the connection, however. My GGGGGrandmother was born on 02/16/1814 at Orange, New York. So far I know is that her parents were Daniel Hallock and Margaret Ryder, and she had a sister, Phebe and a brother Jesse. There are also pictures of a Quaker couple, Josiah and Elizabeth Hallock, but I don't know how they are related. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Terri,

I don't think that there are any direct descendents of General Halleck, as he had only one son(Henry Wager Halleck, Jr., born Abt 1841) with Elizabeth Hamilton (the granddaughter of Alexander Hamilton), and that son died as a young man. You are probably a lateral descendent of General Henry Halleck's ancestors. If you haven't already been there, check out http://www.longislandgenealogy.com/hallock/henryhalleck.html and also the Hallock sites that are linked at http://www.longislandgenealogy.com

Regards,

Amy

Hello Elizabeth,

I am still trying to find the connection between Henry Halleck and my Hallock ancestors. Jesse R Hallock was my gggrandmother Margaret Hallock's brother, and I have a picture of him in my family album. There are many other pictures in the album, including General Halleck, but the only pictures that I can positively identify are Margaret, her sister Phebe, her brother Jesse and Henry Halleck. From notes tucked into the album there is also a picture of Elenor Hallock who was another sister to Margaret.

I found a Daniel Hallock who married Margaret Ryder with children, Margaret, Jesse, Elenor and Phebe, so I am pretty certain that he is their father. There were other children, as well, Rachel, Charlotte and Deborah. All were born in Orange, New York in the early 1800s.

If I get more information, I will let you know.

Amy

Hi,
I was browsing the message board and came across your message about Gen. Hallock. We have been
looking for the parents of a Jesse Hallock for years now, he was the father of my ggggrandfather Miles Hallock.
We know that Jesse was probably born abt. 1800 in NY, lived in Litchfield Co. CT, and had a wife Cornelia
Hopkins or Hannah Hopkins, or both. He had a son Riley by one of the women, who was Miles' 1/2 brother. We
have suspected that Daniel was his father, but don't have enough definitive evidence yet.

The reason that the mention of Gen'l Halleck caught my attention was that there is a strong family resemblance
with my dad, especially the lips and mouth. Every time I see a photo of the General I can't help but think that they
are related!
Any help anyone can give would be appreciated. Thanks!
Hi Cheri, please send me your correct email address. I tried the cheri.shuffler@walgreens.com and got my message back. I don't see any of the information that I have posted on Ancestry.Com or any of the other genealogical sites so I am hesitant to put someone else's work on the internet.

Small world. The Halleck/White/Gleason family history fills four two-inch thick notebooks. I will send you information at your email address if that is alright. Another family member did all of this work, I cannot take credit for it.

Harry White b 26 Apr 1893, d 9 may 1971, and Gregory Allen White b 28 Feb 1892, d 12 Feb 1919 are sons of John White and Elizabeth Halleck White. Another son, Allen Gregory White, (twin of Gregory Allen) b 28 Feb 1892, d 5 Sep 1971, and his wife Laura Rosetta Gilmore White are also buried there. Their first son, John Emory White and his wife Esther Marie are buried at the same cemetery. My husband is a grandson of Allen Gregory and Laura White. I believe that James Edward White and his wife Mable Potter are also buried at this cemetery but I would have to check on that. I have some of the Halleck/White/Gleason family information if you're interested.

I dont know for sure of the origin but my Grandfathers death certificate shows his mother as Susse Halleck, born in Austria. Married to a Joseph Columbus. My Grandfather Joseph Stephan Columbus was born in Delaware Co. PA in 1894 so I assume my Great Grandparents immigrated from Austria prior to 1894
