Did William S-9, Son of John Clark-8 Hallock of IA, Die in the Civil War?

Did William S-9, Son of John Clark-8 Hallock of IA, Die in the Civil War?

William S-9, John Clark-8, James Cooley-7, Amos-6, Thomas-5, Peter-4, John-3, William-2, Peter-1 Hallock

P 416 of the Hallock Genealogy shows a sketch for John Clark-9 Hallock, of Iowa, where it is stated that John Clark lost 3 sons in the Civil War: William S, Samuel & Henry.

Information has come to light that suggests that a William S Hallock, who is found in a Missouri unit in the Civil War, the 1880 Missouri census with a family, and who applied for a pension in 1887 from Indiana in respect to service with that Missouri unit - might be the William mentioned as a son of John Clark Hallock - and he therefore survived the war.

I have posted an earlier post that questions whether Henry, son of John Clark Hallock, survived the Civil War and is found in later censuses in Guthrie County, Iowa, here:

http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.hallock/648/mb.ashx

__________________________

This suggestion is supported by the following:

1) The William S Hallock, son of John Clark of Iowa, was a newspaper editor in Iowa (see excerpt from History of Linn Co, Iowa below). The William S Hallock in the 1880 Missouri census shows occupation as: "Editor".

2) The William S Hallock appearing in 1850 and 1856 censuses with John Clark shows born 1834 in Canada. The William S Hallock in the 1880 Marion Co, MO census was shown as born 1836, Canada.

3) A William S Hallock is found that appears to be a match for the son of John Clark shows he served in Co D, 1st Mo Cav. Although William is a common name, I have not found another William who is a better match. No record I have found shows explicitly whether this William survived the war or not, although one record shows his "rank-out" as 2nd LT, suggesting he survived the war. A pension application is found in 1887 from a William S Hallock residing in Indiana, in respect to service in C E, 13th MO Cav and Co D, 1st MO Cav. The latter unit is shown in the Civil War records I have found.

4) The 1928 Hallock Genealogy shows William as "Esq" and "of St Louis". Esquire is a term that might be used for a newspaper editor, and Hannibal is about 120 miles northwest of St Louis.
_______________________

An article is found in:

History of Linn County, Iowa
on Google Books

THE PRESS.

"The life of the press of Mount Vernon has been a checkered one. Enterprising young journalists sought this point, in view of the college location, long before the population was sufficient to support a newspaper, and after a few issues would be compelled to discontinue.

The Mt. Vernon Index first appeared, by Will S. Hallock, editor and publisher, in 1856. He was a student of the college at the time, and the office ?was furnished by the citizens. He was a young man of ability, a ready writer and pleasant speaker, but the paper proved unsuccessful, and was discontinued after the Fall election."

We then find a William S Hallock in 1880, Marion Co, Missouri, with occupation as: Editor.

___________________________

References to ancestry.com

1850 Census
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1850usfedcenan...

1856 Iowa Census
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=iastatecen&amp...

1880 Census
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1880usfedcen&a...

Army Record showing 1st Cav and born 1834
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=unionsoldiersc...

Army Record showing rank-in of Sgt and rank-out of 2nd LT and Unit Co D 1st Mo Cav:
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=nps_civilwarso...

Pension Application - 03/21/1887
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=civilwarpensio...
__________________

Additional information is welcome to confirm or deny whether the post Civil War William C Hallock is the son of John Clark Hallock - as this link is part of the ancestry of the descendants of this William S Hallock.

SSgt John Hallock, Engineer on B-24 Bomber Shot Down over Austria

SSgt John Hallock, Engineer on B-24 Bomber Shot Down over Austria

I have received communication from a relative of another crew member of John's plane:
____________________

"My brother and I became interested in the events of December 19, 1943, specifically the crash of the plane the Powder Ann that was shot down over the town of Volders, Austria. Everyone on the plane perished except for my father and one other person. John Hallock was one of the ones killed. An Italian historian was writing a book and had reached out to my brother with a lot of information that we never knew, which launched our interest. My Dad died in 1988. I had been trying to figure out where the crew members were buried and came across the Find-A-Grave site which helped me to realize that Mr. Hallock and others from the plane were buried in France. (The others are in Missouri.)

I don’t know very much about the crew members themselves. Most of what I know is about the events of that day in 1943. I wish I knew more about the people.

My brother compiled a lot of information that can be seen via this link. He actually went over to view the crash site and a lot of the pictures are from his trip.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/billjeffries10/3358282430/

Its fine for you to post my comments and contact info. I would love to hear from others…"

Justine Staub
Justine.Staub@amerigas.com

Thanks for that correction.

I don't find a Hinchman in the Hallock Genealogy. I do find a Juliana Hallock, b 10/06/1810, at p RHb-2 of the Hallock Addendum, daughter of Charles and Ruth (Bayles) Hallock of Stony Brook. But no spouse or family shown for her.

Where did you get her name as his wife? Have you found obituaries of the bride and groom and children? You might look for a will for Charles Hallock.

Suggest you make a query in a separate post.

1925 Iowa Census Shows Clarissa's Parents

1925 Iowa Census Shows Clarissa's Parents

The 1925 Iowa Census is a gold mine of info because it listed both parents, mothers usually with maiden names, of every person in the census.

1925 IA census shows parents: Hulet Hallock, b NY, Julia Bace, b PA.

So, this shows that the name Hulet and Hurlburt were very likely the same person, as daughter Clarisa was in the house with Hurlburt in 1860.

The date of birth in the 1860 census is still a problem, but it looks more like a mistake after finding this record of Clarissa's parents. I'm thinking this moves this relationship from possible to probable - but not quite yet "almost certain". Finding Hulett's/Hurlbert's will or Clarissa's or Julia's obituaries might find the evidence to close the deal. Or info from one of Hulet's siblings (will, obituary, etc) where they are referring to nieces and nephews.

For those who subscribe to ancestry:

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&...

For those who don't, you might find this record on other free websites, like familysearch.org.
Granddaughter Charlotte Fuereman and Daughter Phebe with Robert Smith & Children - Agree with 1992 Hallock Addendum

Granddaughter Charlotte Fuereman and Daughter Phebe with Robert Smith & Children - Agree with 1992 Hallock Addendum

I have found some additional info in the 1992 Hallock Addendum at RHb-2, which may tie this Charles into the Peter Hallock tree (in spite of the 1880 census showing his parents were born in Ireland).

Pg RHb-2 of the 1992 Hallock Addendum shows a Charles Hallock in the large group of Stony Brook, Brookhaven, Suffolk, New York, with the following lineage:

Charles-8,7, Henry-6, Richard-5, William-4, John-3, William-2, Peter-1 Hallock

The following set of facts correspond between the 1992 Hallock Addendum and census records:

1) Date of birth of 04/23/1816 per 1992HA (Hallock Addendum) agrees with date of birth on the headstone of the Charles B Hallock of Babylon.

2) The 1992HA mentions a daughter Maud married an Arthur Fursman. The 1920 Census has a granddaughter named Charlotte Furseman in the household of the Charles B Hallock of Babylon. However, a perplexing question is why is there no Maud showing as a daughter of Charles in any of his census records (all are accounted for.)

3) The 1992HA mentions a daughter named Phebe married a Robert H Smith with children Robert, Harold, and Ruth. Such a woman is found with this husband and these children in Bablyon in 1900 and 1910. A daughter named Phebe Hallock was in Charles B Hallock's house in 1870 and 1880 at age 7 and 17, the corresponding age for the wife of the Robert Smith.

As usual, none of this information in the Hallock Genealogy is sourced or documented, so additional information is requested to confirm this tie into the Peter tree.

Just joined the Hallock board. Have been reading all your wonderful posts.

Regarding (1925 IA census shows parents: Hulet Hallock, b NY, Julia Brace, b PA.), I did look at the census page and believe mother's name is Julia C. Bace.

My Hallock line: GGGGrandparents Charles Hallock/Ruth Bayles. GGGrand Albert Hinchman/Julia (Juliana M.) Hallock.
This line goes back to Peter Hallock, Suffolk County.

I have not found documentation of marriage of Albert Hinchman and Julianna M. Hallock about 1831. Julianna was born in Stony Brook, LI, and Albert born in New Utrecht, (Bklyn) LI. Any ideas on where to look for this info? Any Methodist records in Stony Brook or New Utrecht?

Thank you.

Did Henry S-9, Son of John Clark-8 Hallock of IA, Die in the Civil War?

Did Henry S-9, Son of John Clark-8 Hallock of IA, Die in the Civil War?

Henry S-9, John Clark-8, James Cooley-7, Amos-6, Thomas-5, Peter-4, John-3, William-2, Peter-1 Hallock

Pg 416 of the 1928 Hallock Genealogy shows that John Clark of Iowa lost three sons in the Civil War: William, Samuel, and Henry; the latter shown as b 1835.

However, Henry S Hallock of Guthrie County, Iowa fr 1880-1920, shows:

1)He was born 1844 in Cedar County, Iowa, where John Clark Hallock was in the 1850 census with a 5 yr old son Henry.
2)Civil War Records at ancestry.com show that Henry S survived the war.
3) Henry S of Guthrie Co, IA named a son John C Hallock

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=civilwar_histd...

These pieces of evidence would seem to counter the assertion by the Hallock Genealogy that Henry-9 Hallock died in the Civil War and that he is likely the Henry S Hallock of Guthrie County, IA from 1880-1920.

There is one little chink in that argument. Henry S showed the birth place of his parents as:

______father ________mother

1880: Blank <<>> Vermont
1900: Blank <<>> Vermont
1910: Scotland <<>> Vermont
1920: Canada <<>> Vermont

John Clark's census records show he was born:

Father:

1850 - NY
1856 - Canada
1860 - NY

Mother:

1850 - Vermont
(after 1850, John Clark is shown with a different wife).
These differences in the father's birth place are troubling.

Also, there is nothing about Henry's headstone to indicate his Civil War Service. Civil War service was not always, but usually, shown on headstones.

Can anyone present additional confirming evidence that the Henry, son of John Clark Hallock is the Henry of Guthrie County, Iowa?

Is Hurlburt Hallock of Luzerne Co, PA = Hulett Hallock, son of Calvin Hallock?

Is Hurlburt Hallock of Luzerne Co, PA - Hulett Hallock, son of Calvin Hallock?

Calvin-7, Richard-6, Israel-5, Zebulon-4, William-3,2, Peter-1 Hallock

I see some trees that consider these men to be the same person. Would appreciate additional information to confirm that link. Pg 370 of The 1928 Hallock Genealogy shows that Hulett lived in Franklin, PA. The 1992 Hallock Addendum only adds a death date of 09/01/1867 and provides no more information.

Factors in favor:

1) Hurlburt lived in Franklin, Luzerne, PA in 1860. Asserted father Calvin and brother Merritt moved to Franklin, PA - in the 1880 census, twenty years later.
2) Names of Hulet/Hulett vs Hurlbert/Hurlburt are similar
3) 1860 census shows Hurlburt was born New York, which is where Calvin was in 1920-1930 censuses.
4) 1928 Hallock Genealogy says Hulett, b 1827, moved to Franklin, which is where Hurlburt is found in the 1860 census (but born 1808).

Factors that are a problem:

1) The only record with a date of birth I can find for Hurlburt is the 1860 census, which shows he is 52 years old, b 1808, with a 30 year old wife and oldest child (Clarissa) age 7. Could the 52 simply be a mistake? Or is this Hurlburt another relative of Calvin (eg a brother born in 1808?)
2) Hulett and Hurlbert are close variations... but close enough??

Hendric-7 Hallock (1790-xxxx) > A Ghost? Too Many Generations??

Hendric-7 Hallock (1790-xxxx) > A Ghost? Too Many Generations??

The 1928 Hallock Genealogy shows the ancestors of two brothers: Hendrickson-8, married Rebecca Bishop, and Herman-8 Hallock as, beginning with their father:

Hendric-7, b 1790, Hendrickson-6, Noah-5, Noah-4, Peter-3, William-2, Peter-1 Hallock.

A review of the dates involving generations 6 through 8 show this lineage to be impossible and that Hendric-7 is almost certainly a ghost and never existed. Rather, the Hendrickson and Herman Hallock brothers were almost certainly sons of Hendrickson-6, along with sisters Sarah Ann & Caroline - and should all be shown as generation 7.

____________________________

HENDRICKSON HALLOCK 1760-1817

Hendrickson Hallock, d 03/26/1817, age 58y (ie born 03/27/1858-03/26/1859 - used 1858) (HG says 1860). Van Buren, Will of Hallock, Hendrickson - 1817/1817 (Will Abstracts of Suffolk Co, NY, Liber D, pg 7, LDS Film 860327), Testator, name Hendrickson in header, signed Hendrick.

"Hendrickson H, (or K.) Hallock of Brookhaven. 24 Mch 1817. Will signed "Hendrick". Bequests to wife Sarah and estate for widowhood or until son is 21. Land bought of brother Phillip to sons Hendrick and Herman. Legacies to daughters Sarah Ann and Caroline, and furniture afer their mother. Exts: Sarah and Phillip Hallock, Timothy Miller. Wits: Russell Green, Peter Scidmore, Phillip Hallock. Pro: 6 May, 1817. pp 76-78."

______________________

CHILDREN OF HENDRICK-6 NAMED IN WILL FOUND IN LATER CENSUSES

Hendrickson/Hendrick - born 1804 per 1850 and 1860 censuses. Found with wife Rebecca and children. (This Hendrick shown as Hendrick-8 in the 1928 Hallock Genealogy, with Hendric-7 (ghost?) and wife as parents between Hendrick-6 and Hendrick-8 Hallock.

Caroline - born 1806 per 1850 census (in Hendrick's house). It appears she ended a spinster. She was unmarried with her maiden name through age 54 in her brother Hendrick's house.

Herman Hallock - born 1812 per 1850 census. Married Harriet Howell and had Rosaline. Descendants will be interested in Harriet Howell's ancestry, which is presented, along with a sketch of her family at: Thomas H. Donnelly, Genealogy of the Family of Richard Howell (Heritage Books, Inc., 2000), p 357. Children of this couple may be interested to know that Harriet B Howell had two Hallock lines of descent herself; meaning their descendants will have three Hallock lines of descent. Her two Hallock lines are:

HALLOCK: Harriet B Howell-8, Merritt Howell-7, Sarah Luce-6, Eleazer Luce-5, Abiah Hallock-4, Peter-3, William-2, Peter-1 Hallock

HALLOCK: Harriet B Howell-8, Abraham Luce-7, Eleazer Luce-6, Abiah Hallock-5, Peter-3, William-2, Peter-1 Hallock

I have not yet located Sarah Ann. Additional info is welcome on her.

Note: Hendrick-6's will showed at least one son under 21 (could have been both). Actual ages of both brothers per above census records were under 21 in 1817.
________________________

COORDINATION OF BIRTH DATES OF HENDRICK-6 AND WIFE SARAH.

Per his headstone, he was born 1758, meaning he didn't have his first child until he had this set of children from age 46 to age 54 (such children born late in his life may have been why the HG authors thought there should be another generation "sandwiched" in.) Per her headstone, Sarah was born 1772, meaning she could have had a child in 1790 (when the Hallock says the ghostly Hendric-7 was born), but he couldn't have had the children born as early as 1804 - but more importantly, Hendrick-6 is the one who mentioned these four children in his will. Sarah would have this set of four children from 1804-1812, when she would have been 32-40 years old - which fits into a time frame for a woman's child bearing years.
________________________

CONCLUSION IS THAT HENDRICK-7 (per 1928 Hallock Genealogy) IS A GHOST

Sarah (wife of Hendrick-6) would have been child-bearing age, using age 18 to begin, as 1772+18=1790. So, she could have had the son Hendric b 1790, but he would almost not certainly could not have had Hendrick, b 1804 and Caroline, b 1806.

Further, the children stated in Hendrick-6's will are later found in census records. The "extra generation" of Hendric-7 is not found in any other record.

I suggest that the Hendrick-7 Hallock given in the 1928 Hallock Genealogy is a ghost and subsequent generations be accordingly adjusted. Additional information is welcome.
Is Samuel Hallock, b 1822, of Faribault Co, MN > Son of David (1770-1846) and Sarah (Ayers) Hallock of Steuben Co, NY?

Is Samuel Hallock of Faribault Co, MN > Son of David and Sarah (Ayers) Hallock of Steuben Co, NY?

This tree at ancestry.com presents a fairly detailed synopsis of the family, including references to census records, and, especially copies of old letters; but is lacking on documenting of some of the the relationships and sources for maiden names:

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/19204233/person/770000820?ftm...

This tree presents the ancestry of this Samuel as the son of:

David-6, Joshua-5,4, __?__-3, William-2, Peter-1 Hallock

This David is a descendant of Joshua-4, who the Hallock Genealogies stipulate is son of William-3; however, William-3 left a will and did not mention Joshua-4. There is no report of any of his descendants being Quaker, either. There is little doubt he is a grandson of William-2 Hallock, but whether he is from Thomas-3 or Peter-2 is not known.

Both the 1928 Hallock Genealogy do show a Samuel-7 Hallock as a son of this David. The wife of David is given in the published genealogies (p 234, 1928 Hallock Genealogy and ZHh-1 of the 1992 Addendum) as Sally Ayers Dougherty. The above referenced web page shows her maiden name as Ayers (could Dougherty be a married name?); and that Samuel-7's middle name was also Ayers - but no documentation for either assertion.

It should be noted that Simpson-7 Hallock of Steuben County, New York is shown in the City Clerk's Civil War Record as a son of David and Elizabeth (Kinney), born 03/01/1818, Tysone, New York (which I can't find) and living at the time of his enlistment in Elmira, Chemung, New York.

Additional info is welcome, concerning documentation of:

1) Were parents of Samuel of Minnesota: David and Sarah (Ayers) Hallock?
2) How does Elizbeth Kinney tie into the picture? How many wives did David have and who were they?
3) Where does maiden name of Godding come from for Sallie A, wife of Samuel?
4) Can the chilren of David be documented, via will or real estate deeds or family bible entries or ???.

Thanks for your support of Peter Hallock Genealogy.

Andrew and Dorothea Hallock married 1868 in Norway, migrated to the US in 1870, were in Dakota Territory in 1880 and Minnesota in 1900, with a family of ten children.

They were not consistent in their spelling of the name. It varied from Hallick to Halleck to Hallock to Hallack in various records.

The links for ancestry census records for 1880 and 1900 are:

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1900usfedcen&a...

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1880usfedcen&a...

To find other Non-Peter lines, do a search in this board for "NON-PETER LINE".
UNPLACED: Dudley Hallock (1807-1840), Goshen, CT

UNPLACED: Dudley Hallock (1807-1840), Goshen, CT

EARLY GOSHEN MARRIAGES

Could the Hallock participants in the three marriages shown below be siblings and from an earlier Hallock progenitor? Perhaps early deeds might reveal his identity? I an unable to find these Hallocks in the published Hallock Genealogies. Additional information is welcome.

http://dunhamwilcox.net/barbour/goshen_barbour_l-o.htm

Transcribed from the Barbour Records Collection:

Hallock:
Dudley F, m Ann M BAILEY, b of Goshen, Dec 15, 1830, by Rev George Carrington
Julia, m Junius BALDWIN, b of Goshen, Sept 14, 1828, by Frederick Marsh
Lydia, m William HURD, Apr 5, 1827, by Rev Francis H Case
_________________

MOTHER OF DUDLEY (SR) - LYDIA? - 1820 CENSUS - Did she marry William Hurd?

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&new=1&...

1820 Note there is a Lydia Hallock, head of household in 1820 in Goshen: Herself-26-44 and one son 10-15. The son fits the age of Dudley, b 1807. She does not re-appear in 1830, suggesting she died or remarried.

Could this widow Lydia Hallock be the Lydia in the above marriage to William Hurd, and who is listed in Find-A-Grave in Center Cemetery with the first two generations of Hallocks as:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Hu...;

Hurd, Lydia, wife of William, died Jan. 26, 1844, age 61 yrs. 9 mos. 6 days.

She fits the age of the Lydia Hallock in 1820 Goshen census and the 1827 marriage would explain why she is not in the 1830 census.

Note, where is Julia Hallock who married Junius Baldwin in the 1820 census? If she is a sister of Dudley, one would expect her in the 1820 census, but there are no girls in the 1820 census with Lydia and Dudley.

This 1840 census record for William Hurd, if it belongs the William Hurd who married Lydia Hallock, shows a young man the age of Dudley and a much younger woman(wife? Step-daughter?) the same age of the 1820 Lydia:

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&db=18...

Note that a Junius Baldwin and William Hurd are on the same page of the above referenced 1840 census. Junius Baldwin married Julia Hallock and William Hurd married Lydia Hallock in the marriages listed above.
____________________

DUDLEY HALLOCK 1807-1840

Dudley (Sr) is found in the 1840 census (age 30-39), wife 20-29, 1 boy 5-9, and 3 boys under 5.

An entry apparently for Dudley's wife Ann (Bailey) is in the censuses for 1850-1880. She also applied for a Civil War Pension on account of the service of her son, Dudley.

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1840usfedcenan...
________________________

CENTER CEMETERY RECORDS FOR GOSHEN - HALLOCK

Center Cemetery from the Hale Collection:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ctlitch2/cemeteries/goshen...

Hallock, Ann M. Orion is shown as born nine months after the Dudley Hallock / Ann Bailey marriage. Asahel is shown at age 10 with Ann Hallock, his presumed mother. Orion does not appear with Ann in any cenuses after names for individuals were used in 1850 - unless the 1860 Orion, age 25 is him - and if that entry is him, it is a second entry for him, as he is also listed with his wife, Caroline, in the 1860 census.

There is one fact that is troubling in treating them as brothers. Orion/Orian consistently showed in all censuses 1880 forward that his parents were born NY CT. Asahel showed in all censuses 1880 forward that his parents were born CT CT. Did one brother mis-remember where their father was born? Orian would have only been 9 and Asahel an infant when their father died. Or are they not brothers at all? Further info from a will or real estate records would be helpful. (Note that Ann showed she owned real estate in 1870 and so there should be real estate deeds from her, either after 1870 as a sale or transfer - possibly to heirs, or after 1894, when she died.)

Accounting for the four brothers: Note Orian was born nine months after the marriage date of his parents. The 1840 census showed 1 boy 5-9, which fits Orian. There were three boys under 5. These could be Dudley, Asahel, and the third would be the second boy named Orson, who died 1841. So, at this point all of those four boys seem accounted for. A problem then comes with the boy named Orson /Orian in the 1860 census - 25 years old. Since 28 year old Orian with wife Caroline is also in the 1860 census, was he listed twice? Or is this another person, or was Orian not a son of Dudley at all - as is suggested by his parents birthplaces as NY CT?

See:

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1840usfedcenan...
____________________

HUMPHREY CONNECTION?

There is a Dudley Humphrey in the 1840 census in Goshen on the same page with Junius Baldwin and William Hurd.

Then, in the 1840 census next door to Dudley Hallock are: Eliathan/Eliaken and Obediah Humphrey; and on the same page Mary, Harlow, and Henry Humphrey

Are there any blood connections going on between the Hallocks and the Humphreys??

NJ, referred to below, contains a bushel-basketful of Hallock descendants of this couple that are not in the published Hallock Genealogies. If anyone was looking for a genealogy project, tracking this branch down to and through the 1940 census should keep somebody busy for quite awhile.
LtJG Roscius Irving Downs, Jr > WWII Casualty > Seven Hallock Lines of Descent

Roscius Irving Downs, Jr > WWII Casualty > Seven Hallock Lines of Descent

Roscius Irving Downs, Jr, the son of Roscius Irving and Mabel (Curtis) Downs, was born 1918 in New Jersey and died at sea during World War II. His burial memorial, in England, at Find-A-Grave is here:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Do...;

In tieing out his parents, I find that Roscius had SEVEN lines of descent from Peter Hallock - and those are only the lines I know about, as my database is only partial when it comes to the Downs family.

This situation is not uncommon for descendants of Long Island ancestors and will only get more prevalent and more complicated as time goes on as more and more Long Island natives marry each other.

For some reason, this report from FTM is only showing six lines, whereas the Relationship Calculator of FTM clearly shows seven lines for him. There is something wrong with FTM in omitting the seventh line, but at least you can see six of them. See attached.

Parents of Daniel-7 Hallock (1795-1871) of Woodhull, NY - Benjamin-6 or Daniel B-6??

Parents of Daniel-7 Hallock (1795-1871) of Woodhull, NY - Benjamin-6 or Daniel B-6??

There appear to be conflicting parents for Daniel-7 of Woodhull, Steuben, NY - brothers Daniel B-6 and Benjamin-6 Hallock. Will the real parents of this Daniel please stand up?
____________________

1992 HALLOCK ADDENDUM

The 1992 Hallock Addendum, p DH-1 (undocumented), shows the family of Daniel and Sylvia (Sherman) Hallock, with children Gabriel, Abram, James Knox, Diana, and Clarissa Hallock and settled Woodhull, Steuben, NY. This Daniel is shown as a son of Daniel B-6 and Katherine (Bailey) Hallock: This Daniel is:

Daniel-7, Daniel B-6, Benjamin-5,4, John-3, William-2, Peter-1 Hallock

Note this family is in the Quaker branch (ie John-3)
____________________

PARENTS ASSERTED BY SOME ON THE INTERNET

Some researchers and trees on the internet carry this Daniel who married Sylvia Sherman and lived in Woodhull, Steuben, NY as the son of Benjamin and Clarissa (Peet) Hallock. This would make Daniel's ancestry as:

Daniel-7, Benjamin-6,5,4, John-3, William-2, Peter-1 Hallock

(Daniel B-6 and Benjamin-6 are brothers)

Note this family is also in the Quaker branch (ie John-3)

See:

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...

http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.hallock/70.84.85.91.116....

____________________

1928 HALLOCK GENEALOGY

The 1928 Hallock Genealogy, p 229, says Daniel-7, Benjamin-6 b 1785, moved to Deerfield, Tioga, Pennsylvania with no further information.

This reference, also p 229, says Daniel-7, Daniel B-6, b 1795, lived in Kent, CT with no further information.

____________________

The existence of a daughter named Clarissa may point towards Benjamin-6 and Clarissa as parents, but then again, Clarissa may have been a popular name of the era, or simply named after her aunt, if she is from Daniel B-6.

Can anyone provide confirming documentation of who were the parents of the Daniel who married Sylvia Sherman and lived in Woodhull, Steuben, New York?
Daniel B Hallock (1805-????) of Brookhaven, NY. Wife Joanna > Where Did They Go?

Daniel B Hallock (1805-????) of Brookhaven, NY. Wife Joanna > Where Did They Go?

Daniel B-7, Benjamin-6, William-5, Peter-4,3, William-2, Peter-1 Hallock

Pg 229 of the 1928 Hallock Genealogy shows for this Daniel B: "Was son of Benjamin and Sarah-Hallock. Was born 11/03/1805, at Middle Island, L.I. His home was in Patchogue, L.I. Married."

No further info is presented. There is an 1860 census entry for Brookhaven that would appear to match this Daniel - but then his family seems to disappear from Long Island and I have failed to pick up their trail. Or perhaps the parents died and the children were spread to the four winds and are hard to pick up as individuals. I haven't found him in 1850 yet either.

Here is a summary of the 1860 Brookhaven census entry:

Danl B Hallock 44
Joanna Hallock 33
Chas Hallock 14
Ede Hallock 12
Josephine Hallock 9
John Hallock 7
Mare Hallock 5
Ellen Hallock 3
Saml Hallock 0

If you have an ancestry subscription, the entry is here:

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1850usfedcenan...

The entry should be findable at familysearch.org, as well.

I did find an 12 year old Ellen E in 1870 in Brookhaven, in the home of Franklin and Serepta Overton, but otherwise have hit a dead end.

Additional information is welcome.
Will Abstract at Ancestry.Com

Thanks, Jere, for that valuable info for that branch. That means descendants of two of the sons have a different maternal ancestry than previously thought.

I have found an abstract of William's will at ancestry.com that confirms his last wife was named Hannah. It also names a total of 14 children, but the abstract doesn't mention anything about the mothers of the children. Curiously, the list of children agrees with the revised list that was included in the 1992 Addendum, implying that the 1992 Addendum relied on the will for that list (although no source was quoted), but no mention is made, in the 1992 Addendum, that the wife mentioned in the will was named Hannah.

This is what is showing in the abstract, at:

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=genealogy-glh1...

Abstracts of Wills of Otsego County, NY.
William-6 Hallock (1756-1821), Otsego, NY Second Wife Hannah Bagley

Re: Samuel B-7, William-6, Israel-5, Zebulon-4, William-3,2, Peter-1 Hallock

I recently received a full pension file (150+ pages) from the National Archives on Hannah (Bagley) Hallock, former widow of John Shutts (file designation W17042 Shutts, John; see postscript). The file documents her children’s attempt in the 1840s and 1850s to get the Revolutionary pension due to her estate for the period from March 4, 1831 to April 11, 1841 when she died.

From reading through the file, it becomes clear that Hannah Bagley married 1st John Shutts and then 2nd William Hallock. The file clearly states that Hannah remarried to William in 1803, and that Samuel and David were her sons with William (she also had Shutts children by her first marriage).

Question: Is this the correct William Hallock?

One difference is that in the pension file, William Hallock’s death is given as September 1822 in Otsego County, New York; the place is correct, but the date is a year off – 1822 rather than 1821 as in the published genealogies. Some links that may be useful:
Vital records: http://theusgenweb.org/ny/otsego/vitals/wordeath.htmIndex of wills: http://theusgenweb.org/ny/otsego/wills/barbereh.htm (shows wife’s name as Hannah)both of which suggest the correct year is 1821. However, the mistake in years is one that can easily be understood, considering it was made by his step-children 25 years after his death. What is compelling to me is the correspondence of his spouse’s name. And no records are found for a William Hallock who died in 1822.

In the pension file, it states that Samuel moved to Pennsylvania and he can be found in Crawford County, Pennsylvania in 1850 & 1860, as shown by the US census. This place is specifically mentioned in the published genealogies.

And finally, the 1820 census for William Hallock’s household in Worcester, Otsego, New York, in which the age and sex of the two youngest children matches what would be expected for David & Samuel, based on later censuses of their households.

The correspondence of William’s name, death date and place, name of widow, names of sons David and Samuel B., the residence of Samuel B. in 1850-60, and household composition in 1820, all point to this William as the correct one.

-Jere Becker-

Postscript: Images for parts of this file are available on Heritage Quest online (available through many libraries), and partial transcription of the file is available online at the USGenWeb Archives: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ny/columbia/military/revwar/pe...
Link to post related to this one titled “Two Samuel B Hallocks in Early Wisconsin > Tentative Places in the Hallock Tree‏” can be foundon Ancestry: http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.hallock/552/mb.ashx or Rootsweb: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.hallock/552/mb.ashx
They also may be able to gather volunteers to transcribe the diary and even put it on-line. They could check with a lawyer, but it should be in the public domain and transcribable within the next ten years, if it isn't already.
Thank you for the information. There might not be any other descendants. I was able to get as far I did in searching because Charles mentioned his doctor's last name: Helm, and I searched him and found him in Ossining. Charles also mentioned taking trips to towns and villages in Westchester County. Everyone else mentioned did not have a surname! Then I did a search using only Alonzo's first name, and then I found the family in Ossining.

Two Samuel B Hallocks in Early Wisconsin > Tentative Places in the Hallock Tree

There are two Samuel B Hallocks, born 1806-1811, early to Wisconsin. They can be tentatively placed in the Hallock Genealogy, but more proof is needed to prove (or disprove) their parents.

The A's below are intended to represent one of the Samuels; the B's the other Samuel.

CENSUS RECORDS

A - Samuel B Hallock, wife Jane, born c 1806, was in Crawford Co, PA censuses in 1850 and 1860, then Waushara Co, Wisconsin censuses in 1870 and 1880.

B - Samuel B Hallock, wife Catherine, born c 1811, was in New York City in 1850, then Springvale, Columbia Co, Wisconsin in 1870 and 1880. (Haven't found in 1860 yet)
__________________

HALLOCK GENEALOGIES

A - Entry at pg 568 1928 Hallock Genealogy and WHa-1 of 1992 Hallock Addendum, Samuel Hallock, b about 1804, "Lived in Crawford County, PA". Father lived in Worcester, Otsego, NY.
Line: Samuel B-7, William-6, Israel-5, Zebulon-4, William-3,2, Peter-1 Hallock

B - Entry at pg 569 of 1928 Hallock Genealogy, Samuel Hallock, b about 1790. "of Wisconsin". No more data. Father lived Monroe, Orange Co, New York.
Line: Samuel B-8, Samuel-7, Daniel-6, John-5,4,3, William-2, Peter-1 Hallock
_____________________

BURIAL RECORDS

A - None found.

B - Samuel Bull Hallock, no photo, at find-a-grave, b Jun. 20, 1811, Monroe, Orange County, New York, USA, Death: Oct. 6, 1898, Oshkosh, Winnebago County, Wisconsin, USA. Buried Riverside Cemetery, Oshkosh Cemetery, Oshkosh, Winnebago Co, Wisconsin. Buried in same cemetery with wife Catherine and son Samuel Whitfield Hallock. Census records put his birth as 1852-1855. This is right after his parents, Samuel B and Catherine, are found in New York City, in 1850 census, as a carpenter. This gives corroborating evidence that the Samuel B Hallock in NYC was the Samuel B in Wisconsin - but doesn't add any info confirming the identity of the parents of the "B" Samuel B.

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=FSWisconsinBir...
______________________

ON-LINE TREES WITH SOURCES

An online tree presentation with sources.
Samuel-6 Halleck, (1766-1855), Oneida, NY > Wives

Samuel-6 (1766-1855), Oneida, NY > Wives
Patriarch of the Westmoreland, Oneida County Hallecks.

Samuel-6, Israel-5, Zebulon-4, William-3,2, Peter-1 Hallock

Note the spelling HALLECK of this branch, with Samuel apparently the first one in this branch to use it (somewhat) consistently.

Info presented at Find-A-Grave suggests this Samuel had another wife (or maybe two more) and that the oldest boy (Parker) may be from another woman: Anna Arden.
__________________

1928 HALLOCK GENEALOGY

Pg 568 of the 1928 Hallock Genealogy contains a sketch for this Samuel (using Hallock spelling) that shows a Lydia Peabody, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth Pabodie of Norwich, Conn as his wife. This woman is presented in such a way as to presume she was his only wife and mother of the three children presented: Parker, Abraham, Hosea. She is said in this sketch to be descendant of John and Priscilla (Mullins) Alden of the Mayflower.
____________________

TWO GROUPS OF HALLECKS IN ONEIDA COUNTY, NEW YORK

Westmoreland was the ancestral home of Samuel-6 and his descendants. He was:

Samuel-6, Israel-5, Zebulon-4, William-3,2, Peter-1 Hallock

Westernville, Oneida, New York was the ancestral home of the Hallecks (also used the E spelling) who produced the Civil War General Henry Wager Halleck: Jabez-7 Halleck. The patriarch pf this branch, who moved from Long Island, was:

Jabez-6, Peter-5,4,3, William-2, Peter-1 Hallock. Jabez was 98 years old with his 89 year old second wife Rebecca in the home of his deceased son's family, Barnabas Wines Halleck, in the 1860 census in Western (post office Westernville), Oneida, NY.

____________________

FIND-A-GRAVE

There are sixty entries in FAG for Oneida County for the Halleck spelling; eighteen in the Westmoreland Union (New) Cemetery, Westmoreland, Oneida, NY, with information presented below (no photos or source given)

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gsr&GSln=H...;

Anna (Arden) Halleck
Died Sep, 1793
Inscription: Wife of Samuel
My Comment: The death date suggests the record is referring to Samuel-6 Halleck, the patriarch of the Oneida County Hallecks.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Ha...;

Lydia (Peabody) Halleck
Died 03/11/1832, age 59-1-4
Webtext says she was first wife, second was Abigail F. (which contradicts there being an Anna).
My Comment: The Memorialist is confused. Lydia was a wife of Samuel-6, Abgail F was the wife of Samuel-6's grandson, Samuel-8, son of Abraham Harding Hallock. See census records for the couple from 1860-1880 and Abigail by herself later.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Ha...;

Abigail F (__) Halleck
Died 12/26/1924
Webtext: Second wife of Samuel
My Comment: This is the wife of Samuel-6's grandson: Samuel-8, Abraham H-7, Samuel-6 Halleck.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Ha...;
__________________

WHICH WIFE MOTHER TO WHICH SONS?

Note that Parker-7 Halleck, buried in the same cemetery, was born Nov 1792, the year BEFORE the death of the Anna (Arden) Hallock. This information would suggest that Anna was his mother, and not Lydia Peabody.

Abraham is in this cemetery, showing birth of 08/16/1800, suggesting his mother to be Lydia Peabody.

Hosea is in this cemetery, showing birth of 08/04/1804, suggesting his mother to be Lydia Peabody.
__________________________

SAMUEL HALLECK CENSUS RECORDS

Samuel is found in the home of his son Abraham in 1850, age 84, widower, in Westmoreland, Oneida, New York.
__________________________

Additional information is welcome, especially regarding the "which wife is mom" issue, the identities of the wives, and confirmation of the Mayflower line for Lydia Peabody. Also, it might help to know the physical locations of each of the headstones of these three women, in relationship to the headstone of Samuel. Are they all in the same plot? Next to each other?? Do the stones resemble one another in style (or not)? Can Arden or Pabodie/Peabody research or published genealogies add any information? What is the source of the Arden and Peabody maiden names? What is the source for the parents of the wives?

Lydia Peabody Ancestry
I found Lydia Peabody in an old Pabodie Genealogy on Google Books. I leave it for Hallocks in this branch to confirm their Mayflower connection.

This Pabodie Genalogy shows different parents for her. It only shows she married Samuel Halleck and gives no details or children.

Lydia-6, Isaac-5, Joseph-4, William-3,2, John-1 Pabodie / Peabody

Peabody (Paybody, Pabody, Pabodie) Genealogy
Silam Hobart Peabody
1909

Search in left pane for: Halleck

http://books.google.com/books?id=cIlJAAAAMAAJ&printsec=f...

Hallocks at DistantCousin.com

This seems an interesting site. These are lists of on-line databases that include a Hallock name. The list is not comprehensive, but it is free.

http://distantcousin.com/SurnameResources/Surname.asp?Surnam...

As near as I can tell, there is no central names index - you have to open each database and do a Control-F search from within your browser.

Two Edward Hallocks in Late 1800s > Greene County, New York

Two Edward Hallocks in Late 1800s > Greene County, New York

Did the Hallock Genelogy combine two Edward Hallocks into one person?

THE HALLOCK GENEALOGY

P 251 of the 1928 Hallock Genealogy lists an Edward H Hallock:

Edward H-8, Isaiah-7, Obadiah-6, Moses-5, Peter-4, John-3, William-2, Peter-1 Hallock

"Was son of Isaiah and Harriet Hallock. Was born 07/06/1846, died 1908. Married Julia or Georgianna Betts, of Greene Co, NY, 06/30/1870. she was born 05/20/1840, died 1918. Children:

1 - Sarah Ella - Sanford
2 - Minnie - lives in Catskill with mother
3 - Theresa, deceased.

Residence Greenville Center, NY. Occupation was farming

_____________________

EDWARD - 1 - HALLOCK - IN CENSUS

I have been unsuccessful in tieing him into a census record before 1870. He is in the 1870, and 1880 censuses, born 1821-1823, with wife Georgina/Georgianna, b 1846-1847, and daughters Theresa, b 1871, and Minnie, born 04/1873. He appears in all three censuses without a middle initial.

Then Edward appears in the 1900 census showing his marital status as "married", but with no wife or family. Daughter Minnie appears in Catskill, NY in the 1900 census with a woman, b Nov 1846, (same age as Georgianna), who is identified as her mother, but name: "Josephine". This Josephine indicates she is married, but is listed only with daughter Minnie and no husband. She indicates she was married in 1868, just before the 1870 census in which they are found without a child.

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1870usfedcen&a...

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1880usfedcen&a...

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1900usfedcen&a...

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1900usfedcen&a...

Note that Josephine shows in the 1900 census she has had 2 children born, only one living, and that she has been married since 1868. With Minnie showing as her child here, there is no room for her to have had Sarah Ella.
_______________________

EDWARD H - No 2 - HALLOCK IN CENSUS

He appears as a child in 1850 and 1860 censuses with his parents, born 1845-1846, in New Baltimore, Greene Co, NY. I haven't found him in 1870, but in 1880, he is in Greenville, Greene Co, NY, with wife Julia, b 1840 in one census and 1844 in another.

In the 1880 census is a child named Sarah, born 1872. In the 1900 census is a child named Ella, b 1776. This child is apparently the child that the Hallock Genealogy refers to as Sarah Ella and has a sketch of her at pp 583-4, with husband Elbert Sanford and children Alton C, Arthur D, and Donald S Sanford, living in Greenville Center, Greene, NY.

It should be noted that this Edward and his wife, Julia, indicate in the 1900 census that they married 1900 and she indicated that she had had no children born, or living. Thus, Sarah Ella was not a daughter of Julia. She could be an adopted child of both, or be from Edward from a previous marriage.

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1880usfedcen&a...

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1900usfedcen&a...

________________________

CONCLUSION

TWO MEN

At the present time, with the above information in the census, we must conclude that there are two different men here and that the Hallock Genealogy combined them into one person. The first probably has no grandchildren. The second has Sanford grandchildren, but the descendants need to explore further whether Sarah Ella is a natural child of Edward with a wife previous to Julia or an adopted daughter of the Edward and Julia.

The younger one appears to match the one with the line above in the Hallock Genealogy.

WHO IS THE OLDER ONE?

So, who is the Edward Hallock, b 1821? There are undocumented web pages out that show an Edward Hallock with a date of birth in the same month he gave in the 1900 census as a son of Isaac & Abigail (Lester) Hallock of Albany County. I have not been able to tie into this Isaac's origins or family. He is buried in Stanton Cemetery, Albany Co, NY:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Ha...;

Ansel-7 Hallock, b c1812 VT , of Hubbardston, MA > Remove and Replace ALL Children

Ansel-7 Hallock, b c1812, of Hubbardston, MA > Remove and Replace ALL Children

Ansel-7, Isaac-6, Stephen-5, Benjamin-4, John-3, William-2, Peter-1 Hallock

In the preceding post, I presented info from the Hall and Taft Genealogies that described a family for Isaac-6 Hallock, b 1784 of Richmond, Chittenden, Vermont which was more expansive and with more details than in the Hallock Genealogy. Although absent sources, most of the family members were traceable into census and other records to at least illustrate they existed. Until more evidence comes along, it added considerable possibilities for descendants from the new daughters these genealogies added.

At the same time, this information presented new (and contradictory to the Hallock Genealogy) light on who his sons Isaac-7 and Stephen-7 were. That post is here:

http://boards.ancestry.com/surnames.hallock/616/mb.ashx

I then turned my attention to Isaac-6's son, Ansel-7, and looked at the family given him in the 1928 Hallock Genealogy, p 177, and found a surprise. There are nine children listed, all of whom are in the list of Isaac-6's children per the Taft and Hall Genealogies: Stephen, Joseph of Woodstock, CT, Isaac of Hubbarston, Mass, Lucretia-Haynes, Emily-Bruce, Elizabeth, Mary-Stone, and Ansel.

The 1928 Hallock Genealogy listed Ansel-7's brothers and sisters as his children!
____________________

REMOVE

All of these nine children need to be removed / moved to Isaac-6.
Isaac-6, Peter-5,4, John-3, William-2, Peter-1 Hallock > Additional Children?

Isaac-6, Peter-5,4, John-3, William-2, Peter-1 Hallock > Additional Children?

The 1928 Hallock Genealogy shows this Isaac-6 with one son, Israel-7, who had one son, Barnabas-8 Hallock - who was first cousin of the notable poet Fitz-Greene Hallock and a published poet in his own right.

Query: Did Isaac-6 have other children?

The following information is interesting fodder for further examination. Note that the 1850 census where Isaac-6 was living at age 98 contained a 60 year old "Unice Allen" and that a Eunice Hallock, daughter of "Isaac and Ruth Hallock of Washington" married a John Allen, 09/26/1805 as recorded in the Nine Partners Quaker Meeting Marriages. Using the census age, she would only be 15 years old at marriage, which is possible, or the census could be understating her age.

As an aside, the 1928 Hallock Genealogy says Isaac was an "esteemed" Friends preacher, but the 1906 Genealogy said his wife was the "esteemed" Friends preacher.

_________________

Nine Partner Meeting Marriages:

http://www.archive.org/stream/quakermarriagesb00fros/quakerm...

This marriage is also at ancestry.com showing "Ruth", rather than "Kuth", which is probably an OCR conversion error.

"John Allen, Jr.. son of John and Llary of Washington.
Eunice Hallock, daughter of Isaac and Kuth Hallock of Washington. Married, 26 of 9m, 1805."

Note the Washington referred to is probably the town of Washington, Dutchess, New York.
_____________________

1850 United States Federal Census

Home in 1850:	Hyde Park, Dutchess, New York
Gender:	Male
Family Number:	405

Household Members:
Name	Age
Alexander Smith 35
Sarah A Smith 32
Eliza H Smith 13
Isaac Hallock 98 <<<<<<<<<<<<<
Unis H Allen 60 <<<<<<<<<<<<< Is this Eunice Hallock md John Allen in 1805?
Matilda Hallock 50
Rosanna Kelley 18

Source Citation: Year: 1850; Census Place: Hyde Park, Dutchess, New York; Roll: M432_497; Page: 249A; Image: 451.

http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=1850usfedcenan...
____________________

This information then raises the question of further relationships with the rest of the people in this house.

Is Matilda a daughter or daughter-in-law or even granddaughter (or niece, etc)
Is Sarah Smith a granddaughter or great granddaughter?
Hallock Genealogy, 1940, by Wm Hallock and Jacob Inmandt

Just found this published Hallock Genealogy. Originally published by William Hallock and updated by Jacob Inmandt.

Did this Genealogy take the original published in 1850 and then update it without reference to the 1906 or 1928 Hallock Genealogy?

It is only a partial genealogy, if this is all there is - 18 pages long. I have had a somewhat difficult time following it. Hope it helps someone.

Since it is a pdf file, a normal Control-F search in your browser doesn't work. Maybe downloading it as a pdf file and opening it in Acrobat will enable one to search it via Acrobat.

Or you can use the chapter headings to try to drill down to your interest.

http://longislandgenealogy.com/Hallock.pdf
