Hi,

I am doing some research on the Hallowell family as they connect with the Winston and Goddin family of Richmond, Virginia.

In particular Joshua Hallowell and his wife Indie Goddin and their daughter, Sara H. Winston. I'm not sure of the dates for any of these individuals. I do know that Joshua Hallowell fought in the Civil War. My best guess is that Sara Hallowell Winston was born circa 1853.

I do have a photo of Indie and Sara and a copy of a portrait done of Joshua, that is at the Va. Historical Society.

Thank you for any help.
Sandy

I have the complete Hallowell ancestry of Fulton Wesley Hallowell (b. 12 Oct 1896), son of Dr. Charles W. Hallowell (b Sep 1859), a pharmacist as you say, and wife Sallie Fulton who were married 9 Apr 1895 (I also have their Philadelphia marriage record). The children of Fulton Sr. by his 1st wife Mabel Estelle Brooks were Ruth M, Fulton W. Jr, and James C. Hallowell. I would really love to have your parents marriage info as well as your own marriage, children, etc. if any. For easier correspondence, you can contact me directly at hallowellb@aol.com

A little more digging on-line and I found "Historical collections relating to the Potts family in Great Britain and America" By Thomas Maxwell Potts, William John Potts on Google Books. This reference, if correct, settles the question. It says that Alice Potts (b. 27 Oct 1780 d. 28 Jan 1838) daughter of Zebulon and Martha (Trotter) Potts m. John Hallowell. John and Alice (Potts) Hallowell had 12 children, including Susanna E. Hallowell (b. 27 Oct 1806 d. 25 Oct 1884) who. m. Joshua Hallowell. Finally, it lists five children of Joshua and Susanna E. Hallowell: Alice P. (b. 2 Feb 1837) m. Joseph Roberts; Lydia (b. 9 Apr 1838) m. Clayton Yarnell; Sarah J. (b. 11 Jul 1841) m. Samuel Crook and Joseph Kelso; Elizabeth E. (b. 3 Feb 1843) m. Lukens Webster (my gggrandfather); and Jefferis (b. 27 May 1846). Do these dates agree with yours? This is a great find, thanks for the tip!

Thank you for the additional information, Bruce. I would be interested in the children's birth dates.

The Potts Family Genealogy website lists Susanna as the daughter of John Hallowell and Alice Potts, too, but I do not believe the website provides source information, so I am not sure if it is reliable. Perhaps Hinshaw is the source, but I have not seen the Hinshaw source you reference. I will look for it.

"The Hallowell-Paul Family," available on Ancestry.com, says that John Hallowell and Alice Potts had five children, four boys and one girl, but no Susanna. However, one of these boys is Samuel E., b. 1806. Could this be a twin of Susanna, or could it have been transcribed incorrectly from a handwritten source? This book does not provide any further information on this Samuel E.

I passed this info on a few months ago to Valerie. For the surname group: I have found the connection of this Eli Hallowell to the immigrant John Hallowell of Pennsylvania. He is the son of Abel Cadwallader Hallowell (b 20 Aug 1777, Abington) and Elizabeth Carr (b. 12 Dec 1778, Philadelphia), and the grandson of Matthew Hallowell (b 8 Feb 1733, Abington) and Mary Cadwallader (b 19 Jun 1731), and the gr-grandson of William Hallowell (b. 1 Jun 1707, Abington) and Margaret H. Tyson (b. 7 Feb 1709, ABington). There is much more detailed information on siblings and children etc. from a family bible extract and historical notes found in the Montgomery Co. Historical Society in Norristown late last year. e-mail me if you need more specific information

further to this: Susannah E. Hallowell is almost certainly the daughter of John Hallowell and Alice Potts, born 27 Oct 1806 [Hinshaw] as she then named her first child "Alice P. Hallowell". This would explain why the Potts genealogy gives her name as you reference. I also have more details on their children (exact birth dates etc.) If this is analysis is correct, Susannah and Joshua are 3rd cousins both descended from Thomas Hallowell and Rosmand Till.

(newspaper clippint)

Eugene Hallowell, connected with the drug trade of this city since its first settlement, and one of our heretofore considered, confirmed bachelors, will today lead to the hymeneal altar, Miss Dollie Campbell, an estimable and accomplished young lady of Topeka, but well known to many in this city where she has many friends. The ceremony will take place at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Gemmel, the affable and efficient manager of the Western Union telegraph in that city and be performed by Rev. Mr. McCabe, of the Presbyterian church. The happy pair will take a six weeks tour to Philadelphia, Newport, Boston and the east generally.

The Hutchinson News Weekly
Hutchinson, Reno County, Kansas
Thursday, September 18, 1879
page – 3 *** column – 2

<

Thanks, this does sound very plausible. I see a Joshua Hallowell listed in the 1820 census (age 26-44) in Philadelphia, but no children are listed. No possible Joshua Hallowells show up in the 1810 census. Perhaps he was not "head of household." Perhaps a search in the Philadelphia birth records or probate records would come up with something.

I don't have any hard evidence, but I would tentatively place this Joshua as son of Joshua (b. 19 Sep 1779) and Lydia Palmer (b. 1780). Your Joshua's second born daughter is also named Lydia (it was common to name children after grandparents). The Joshua b 1779 (son of Joshua b. 1751 and Hannah Trump) was disowned by the Chester Co friends in Aug 1801, and then moved to Philadelphia. Their known children were John (b. c1801), Hezekiah (b. 1803), and Joel (b c1805). This leaves a perfect sequence available for a Joshua b 1807 or so.
[sources: Hallowell-Paul History; A Genealogical Record of John amd Mary Palmer of Chester Co.)

I am looking for information on Joshua (b. ca. 1807) and Susanna (b. ca. 1806) Hallowell. They lived in Gwynedd, Montgomery Co. in 1850, W. Marlborough Chester Co. in 1860, and Hopewell, Chester Co., in 1870.

Children are:
Alice b. ca. 1837;
Lydia b. ca. 1838;
Sarah J. b. ca. 1841;
Elizabeth E. b. Feb 1843 d. 1923;
Jeffries b. ca. 1845.

I can not find any information about Joshua's parentage. The Potts Genealogy website and the Gwynedd Friends website say that Susanna is Susanna Hallowell, but without a reference.

Can anybody help?

Thanks,

--Mark

Not that I know of, though I don't know their middle names.
this Eli Hallowell was born in 1808. All his sons were born before 1860. None were named Arthur. but, it might be possible that one of them had a son named Arthur.I haven't been able to trace all of the sons.
