Hi Abs

My maternal grandparents were close family, of Patrick's and in constant touch with Patrick in Ireland, then Manchester, where they were neighbours, my parents remained in weekly touch with Agnes and later Herbert, having been at Patricks funeral with her, until their deaths and then with their children, as I am with their children. Agnes kept her father's letters sent whilst touring, and those from the D'Oyly Carte, along with programs and early photographs, and his effects - which Maureen kept in the family home until her death. I had the privelidge of browsing those letters before Maureen died, and they are currently being digitized by her nephews. I can tell you that following her father's death Agnes went to live with her uncle Michael in Leigh which is where she lived until she married Herbert Ward (her brother Stephen M married Herbert's sister Agnes Ward).

Now, the names you give do not link to Patrick or his daughter Agnes so I am not sure how, or if you fit into the family, as it has been well documented by researchers from the family as far back as 1935, with copy birth marriage and death certificates and there is no George Severs in that family. However there is a record of an Agnes May Halton marrying George Severs in 1917 in Chorlton, she was born in Chorlton in 1900 but is not part of Patrick William Haltons family.

Halton is a Lancashire name with a very large number of branches in the Bolton, Manchester area from early times, there is a possible connection in that some members of that family went to Ireland with Cromwell in the 1600's but there is no proof of a viable connection.

Based on the information you supplied the family you seek are shown in the 1911 and 1901 census :-

1911 RG14PN23687 RG78PN1377 RD464 SD1 ED30 SN80
43 Davenport Avenue Withington Manchester
HALTON, Mary Elizabeth Head Widow F 42 1869 Man Corporation Waiting Room Attendant Glazebury Nr Lancashire
HALTON, Agnes May Daughter Unm F10 1901 School Didsbury Lancashire
WATMOUGH, Teresa Lodger Widow F 54 1857 Dressmaker Didsbury Lancashire
WATMOUGH, Agnes Jane Lodger Spinster F18 1893 Shop Assistant East Finchley London Middlesex

1901 RG13/3669/ 5/ 1 1, York Street, Didsbury
HALTON, Mary Eliz Head Married F 33 1868 Dressmaker Bedford Leigh, Lancashire
HALTON, Agnes May Daughter F 0 (10 MOS) 1901 Didsbury, Lancashire

(Bedford or Hough Woods as it is now known is between Leigh and Astley in Lancashire.

There is a marriage of Mary Eliz Worden who married Thomas James Halton in Warrington in 3rd quarter 1889 who are possibly the parents of your Agnes but you would need to get the certificates to confirm it.

No connection to Ireland or Patrick William Halton. If you do a search of Rootsweb for Andy Halton he managed a large tree centered on English family.

The Halton Family Website has a registration form intended to help trace any connection to a specific family rooted in Ireland from 1734, data is restricted to that family. Completing it will enable me to do a deeper check, there is no fee involved.

Hi Bernard,
Many thanks for your quick reply... I thought it might have time a while for someone to reply :-)

This is really strange as I think in some ways we are talking about the same person but then its not quite right. I think we may have 2 different people but with very similar DOBs, occupations and family names???? Most of the information I have is from the census records, a few of 'free birth' records and word of mouth from my family.

The 'confirmed' bits I have are:
The PWH I have was born in 1841(Apr-may-jun) in Ireland, but died 7th June in Manchester. From the census records I can place him in London and Cornwall (lodging) and also back in Manchester (moss side) where I have him with his wife Winifred and then later with an Anne E Thomas.
I have his daughter Agnes Mary J Halton (born 1883 jan-feb-mar in Manchester-I cannot confirm her mother) married to George Severs (in 1917). There daughter Joan Mary Severs was my gran.

I don't have any confirmed information on his parents, but believe they were from moynalty, county meath.

I also him down as having 7 other children:
Julia Mary Halton - Oldest and who Winifred and Patrick left there wills too.
Fredrick
Stephen
Richard
John
Bernard
Winifred

So I am not sure if we are talking about the same PWH, but I wonder if they is a connection due to the origin location and surname?

What do you think? Do you have lots of general information on your website? or is it just for your PW Halton direct family?

Thanks for your help

Abs
Hi Abi,

Patrick William Halton, of D'Oyly Carte fame is my great grand uncle, he was born in Mullingar, Westmeath on 22 April 1841 and died in Manchester on 7 Jun 1909, his parents were John Halton (1815-1888) and Julia Ganly (1820-1888). I have the family history from three generations further back, forward to the present collated from their various descendants and supported by family and civil documentation. His daughter Agnes Mary Josephine Halton (b 8 Mar 1883 in Manchester d 14 Feb 1963 Fleetwood, Lancashire) married Herbert John Ward in Leigh, Lancs They had three children Winfride, Maureen and Agnes all of whom I met and interviewed to confirm the tree, which was originally created with Agnes's help. Maureen kept the Family Archive which confirmed the lineage back to PWH and beyond.
If you can confirm your connection to this family, I can pass on a copy of the tree and include you in the Family Contact List. You can do this online, by registering at the families secure website:- http://www.haltonfamily.co.uk

Regards

Bernard.

I'll have to check with the family and get more info for you.
She married in the RC church in Moynalty as far as I know, then moved to Dublin with her husband a Diginan from Ringsend.
I think her father was Peter Halton.
My brother has some documentation from the Irish Archive office but he is away at the moment.
My Haltons came from County Meath in Ireland. They arrived in the US around 1850 and moved to Pennsylvania. My relatives were John Halton and Jane (Darby) Halton. They ended up settling in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Do any of these names sound familiar?

Sorry, not able to connect at present. I do have a Thomas Halton of Dublin who marriaed Catherine ??? and had children Elizabeth, Catherine, Frances and Thomas with no date or place for the marriage - however the eldest daughter Elizabeth was born 28 Nov 1848.

I still have HALTON brothers of this Thomas - William born 1805 Dublin, Philip born 1809 Dublin, Robert born 1811 Dublin and Richard born 1820, who have not been found after birth in Dublin. If you can trace John Halton back to one of these brothers then I can provide data for two generations back and the other two children's descendants.

Generally the Halton's in that area fall into two families the protestant family based around Dublin and Cavan and the RC family around Dublin and Westmeath. There is also a family tradition that our branch "came to Ireland with Cromwell" although at present this has no factual data to support it.

William, you do not give a timescale, so its difficult to know whether or not there is a connection.

My RC Halton's were mostly based around Dublin and Westmeath upto the late 1800's. All the John's are accounted for, but there are four male children born between 1805 and 1820 in Dublin who have not been traced.

Spelling of HATTON~HALTON~HUTTON

Has anyone ever come across any of the above spellings for their HALTON ancestors?
I am a HATTON { I thinkLOL}
Have found several spellings and all due to the A not being closed and it becoming a U or the U not closing and becoming an A. As well as the T not being crossed and therefore becoming HA{ LT} ON, instead of HA{ TT} ON.
So now you can see how all of our ancestors surnames have changed through the years from HALTON to HATTON to HUTTON.
Just something more for you to ponder on.

Sharon

Hi Andy,

well, just about all the info I have is that my grandad was called Norman Halton (born 7th may 1918 in Bolton possibly in the heaton area), and his dad was called Thomas Halton and he was in the Royal Engineers. Thats all I know for sure about the Haltons. I mentioned my grandads siblings in one of my previous post. I believe that my dad has cousins in Horwich so possibly a connection there!

cheers for the reply!
Hi All! I'm trying to find out any info (dates and places) about my great grandad Thomas Halton. He would probably have been born between 1880 and 1900. He was married to Catherine or Katherine Kelly. They had 7 children: Leo, Seth, Mildred, Tommy, Sylvia, Irene and my grandad Norman. He may have been born in bolton or elsewhere in Lancashire but im guessing really. Thats all the info I have about him. If anyone has any info that might relate to him it would be great to hear from you! many thanks Sarah

Re: Spelling of HATTON~HALTON~HUTTON

Hi Sharon
Try This:
Halton appears in Roman texts and is still around in 1066 - Take Lancashire for example Halton in the Bolton area becomes (poss under dialect) Hulton, Hilton, Houlton, Houghton & Holton. It seems the locals have a bit of trouble with the pronunciation of the "a" dialect turns it to “u” as in hut. The Halton family owned land in the Bolton area.
