Prince Edward Co, VA, ca 1800

Margaret Downs [sometimes Downes] made a will 22 Sep 1799 giving her son Robert Downs her LAND, and dividing the value of her whole estate equally between Robert and her daughter Margaret. Proved 21 Apr 1800.

Marriage index shows Margaret Downs marrying 4 Nov 1803 one John Hamilton.

Has anyone researching Prince Edward come across documents which refer to any of these people? Deeds (grantor, grantee, witness, neighbor, previous owner)? Orders?

The first reference to Downs in the personal property tax was 1796. Tax lists checked through 1809.

Chancery file 1805-027 shows that Margaret Downs bought 75 acres from Edward Radford, who had purchased the same parcel at a Sheriff's sale for taxes. At the time of sale the land was occupied by Robert Downs and John Hambleton [Hamilton]. Adjoining landowners at time would have included John Billups, Charles Selby and Thomas Yuille. The land located somewhere on Spring Creek.

It's great to hear from you June. I remember you so well. How are Shelia and Susan? Mum and Dad have both gone now. I am married with two boys Joe 19 and Christ 16. I had breast cancer three years ago ok now but still on tablets. Did you know my brother Paul lost his wife about 10 years ago now. Jims wife Shelia and my sister Cecilia have both had the breast cancer too but are both clear now. Other than that all the family are well and it's growing fast. I have just started trying to research mum's family it's very time consuming as you know. Who are Katy Belum and Pat Rush. Am ringing Alice and Fred's Joe this week to get some more family stories. Will e-mail any to you. Did you know Grandad did 6 months in prison for assault. Mum told me that Gran would sell clothes and a man wouldn't pay her so Grandad hit him? Will send you any more info in a couple of days.

Hello Anne, my goodness how are you? we certainly do have the same family. I have been researching now for a number of years. I remember your parents auntie Alice uncle Jo, Jimmy and Sheila, Paul and Celia very well. Alice known as Lau and her sisters Bessie and Joan were regular visitors to our family home. When Dad passed away it became very difficult for Mum to keep the house going so she moved to a smaller place in Cheam, she passed away in 2008 aged 90. I am in touch with Kathy Belum and Pat Rush...I have been in Australia since 2006. I lost touch with Bob smith and Jo Hambleton when I moved with my family to the south coast many years ago.
email mason1245@gmail.com
June
I am also reserching my family tree. My grandfather was Thomas Hambleton who married Elizabeth Belam. My mother Alice was the youngest of the children. They were Elizabeth married a man called Smith. I am in touch with their daughter Alice who is about 83 and her brother Robert (Bob) Smith. There was a Charles, Thomas, Jim and Fred. I knew Jim and Fred and met one of the others when I was very young. I think we have the same relatives. Jim has three daughter with his second marriage (to Doris) who I knew but when Jim died the family moved and I don't know where they are. Fred has a son who I am in touch with.

Mary Alice Hambleton Dennington Ogles

Mary Alice Hambleton married Jonathan Samuel Dennington Apr 1887 in Stoddard County, Missouri. Jonathan died sometime after 15 Jun 1900 of malaria while visiting relatives in Missouri. I think that his family was living in Clay County, Texas at the time. Mary Alice was left with their seven children; she could not support them all and so, on 28 Aug 1901 she placed four of them in an orphanage in Dallas, Texas, where one son, Louis, died in Feb 1902. On 01 Jul 1902, Mary Alice and her father went to claim the remaining three children. They had secured a claim in Botsford, Indian Territory (Oklahoma).

Sometime between 1902-1905 Mary Alice married an Unknown Ogles -- likely in Oklahoma; he died in abt 1908. Two children were born to them. Mary Alice is enumerated in the 1910 census as widowed with her widowed mother, two Dennington sons and two Ogles children who are enumeragted as Dennington children in Temple, Comanche County, Oklahoma.

My questions are in regard to the name of Mary Alice's second husband, when and where he died and is buried and also when and where Mary Alice died and is buried.

I have a Thomas Hambleton in my line. I have traced him from Maryland to Tenn. He was born in 1719, died Sept 28 1772, and is buried in Bedford, VA. He married a Esther Sampson. She was born in 1730 at Hawkins Tenn and died 1769. I have some information that says Thomas may have been born in Ireland, and when he come to this country at the age of 20 that would be sometime in 1739 or there about as an indenture servant for 5 years and that his Agent was Nathaniel Wilson. Thomas said his father was in Ireland and his mother was dead. Nothing more about his father or mother. I can't get anything in England or Ireland. His wife Esther's mother was Mary Soule and her father was Obadiah Sampson, both from all I can find out were borned and buried in Hawkins. I don’t belong to Ancestry.com and can’t get really good information.
My name is Sally Hamilton-Gooslin
My email is gooslis@yahoo.com.
Hambleton Family

I am searching for my grandfathers family my grandfather is Thomas Hambleton I have his and my grandmothers marriage certificate and in 1902 he was aged 24 living in Bermondsey, London. The certificate states his fathers name was Charles Hambleton Dec'd occupation a French Polisher. I have no idea who his mother was or if there are any siblings. I now live in Australia and have to rely on online information which in general has been very good. But I have come across this stumbling block and would appreciate any help I can get. From the marriage certificate his birth date was approx 1877. He passed away in 1959 I have his death certificate which confirms this.

Hambletons in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Iowa

I published a book titled Philena's Friendship Quilt: A Quaker Farewell to Ohio last fall (Ohio University Press) about a quilt made for Philena Cooper Hambleton and about her life and family. I have just completed a second book titled Neighbors & Friends: Quakers in Community. It will be available in a couple of weeks from Xlibris (www.xlibris.com). Both books extensively cover the Hambleton family and their lives in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Iowa. Covered are the families of Benjamin and Ann Hanna Hambleton, Osborn and Philena Cooper Hambleton, Levi and Mary Heston Hall Hambleton, Thomas Clarkson and Emily Morlan Hambleton, other members of the Hambleton family and their in-laws, the Coopers and the Cravers. These books are the result of 5 years of genealogical and historical research, including visits to Ohio and Iowa. All sources are documented in the footnotes to these books. Check them out!

Lynda Salter Chenoweth

I recently acquired an old Family Bible. The condition of the Bible was very poor, but I rescued the Family info pages from it before I tossed the rest. The family is Hambleton/Winchester from Talbot County. If interested, please email me at klaf@dmv.com.

Kari Andrew Farnell

Hi I'm related to Lewis Hambleton born 1/2/1822 in Columbia, OH. He had younger brothers named George, William and Issac Howard. Their older sisters were Rachel Leah, Sarah, Mary, and Emeline. Parents were Benjamin and Rachel Hannah Hambleton. From what my Uncle told me, these Hambletons(4th generation) came form John and Mary Hambleton who came to america in 1630 as Scottish quakers to the Chesapeake bay area.
Hi Elaine, My Uncle Dan Hambleton told me that in 1630 John and Mary Hambleton sailed into Chesapeake Bay with 30 other men They were all Scottish Quakers trying to escape persecution. So far, I don't know were in Chesapeake Bay they landed, but my uncle told astory about a John Hambleton who helped lay out the street grides in Lancaster Penn. My line then goes to James Hambleton(died 1751)who married Mary Beakes. Their children were Grace, William, Gannett, Elizabeth and Stephen(born May 1, 1729,Died 1806)married Hannah Mary. Their Children were james,John, Jane, William(born Oct 23, 1758, Died July 16, 1837),!st marriage-Mary Kester,2nd Marriage Rebecca Cam.Their Children were Jonas Joseph, Rachael, Moses, Arron, Margaret, and Mary. I hope this helps, if not it may help someone else.Alison

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. My line comes for Lewis and Eliza then Enos and Eva Isabell Page. My grandpa was Enos and Eva's 9th child Walter Leslie Hambleton. He married Lena Idella Middleton and they lived in Guthrie Center IA. He died from a blood clot to the lung. One of my cousins Had a blood clot when he was working in washington DC and the Dr(Alving) who treated him put the Hambleton family into a study about hypercoaguable states. I think I found the study with our name spelled Hamilton. They discover how to treat us. So far it's Coumadin for life. I personally haven't made a blood clot, but have been tested for the deficiency and do have it. I take a baby aspirin a day, don't smoke, don't take birth control pills, wear support hose and exercise.Doing these things can lessen the chance of making a clot.
Hi, I just read your message about John Hambleton from Nansemond City Vir. and wonder if he is a son to John and Mary Hambleton who came to Chesapeake Bay in 1630 with 30 other Scottish Quaker men. My Uncle Dan Hambleton says John gave the boat to 15 of the men who didn't stay. One of John's son's James Hambleton(Hamilton)is the line I am from. He helped lay the street grids in Lancaster, Penn.He married Mary Beakes. I'm very interested to hear the other Hambleton relatives have had trouble with blood clots. The great thing about it all is medicine is recognizing and treating better and sooner for antithrombin III deficiency.Alison Hambleton-Youngberg

John Brown's grandson Hambleton was kidnapped

Appears in "The Wapanucka Press" 8 December 1904, Wapanucka, Johnston County, Indian Territory, now Oklahoma

Lawton: A sensational kidnapping took place at Allie, in this county. Two mounted men galloped up to the door yard of John Brown, a farmer of that locality, and seizing his four-year-old grandson, threw the child on behind one of the riders and made off with him. It is said Brown’s daughter, a Mrs. Hambleton, has trouble with her husband, and went to her father’s house with the boy. The old man gave the kidnappers a hot chase, but to no avail. It I supposed the child’s father was one of the mounted men.

Im looking for informationon one Mary Hambleton who married a John McNeill. They had at least two children. I believe the eldest son was Andrew McNeill (abt 1810) and another son, my gg grandfather was John(1813 abt). John married Mary Holland in 1843 and migrated to Australia in 1853. It is believed that Andrew migrated to Australia too. Any information would be most helpful
