You seem to have much information about the Hamelins of Canada. I believe my great grandmother is a descendant of Rene Hamelin who went to the LaPrairie area, and possibly the daughter of Louis Hamelin. Her name was Marguerite Hamelin, b. abt. 1826 and who married a George McBeth,b. abt. 1820-21 and is believed to be the son of Francois McBeth and Marie Luce Guibault Francois McBeth's father, George, was in the fur trade.

I'm sure your grandfather is related to mine somehow. His name is Stanley Hamelin and he had 10 brothers and sisters, though most have passed away now. His family came from Penatanguishene also. Eileen, and Fran are the only two of his sisters I ever met. He is married to Mary-Jo and they had 5 kids of their own.

Say hello to your dad for me. I guess were cousins. I'll have to look at my relationship calculator to figure it out.

I've been researching the Hamelin family for about 7 years now. My mother is Mary Augusta Zoschke. Daughter of William Zoschke and Agnes Florentine Hamelin. She is buried up in St Margrets Cemetery, Midland. When I was younger my mother and I would visit Penetang/Midland every year visiting relitives. Most I knew as a child have passed by now.

I know of Ernest J. Hamelin 1916-1982 and his wife Louise Deschamps 1917-?.
Ernest was the son of Hormisdas Hamelin 1878-1955, son of my 2nd great grandparents Francios Xavier Hamelin and Lucie André dit St Amand(t).
Hormisdas's wife was Lucie Desroches 1888-1954, daughter of Honoré Desroches and Philomène Daoust.

Ernest's wife Louise was the daughter of Jean-Baptiste Deschamps and Delianne Lamoureux.

Now Ernest and Louise had as far as I know, Yolande (Fairfax), Verna (Caps), Bernadette (Prokesch), Claudette (Quinn) and Roland (spouse O'Brien) for children. So one of these and their spouses were your parents.

Interestingly Louise gets her name from her grandmother Marie Louise Vaillancourt 1855-Nov 9 1889 .

My Hamelin family (pronounce Amelin in French) left the St. Polycarpe, Soulanges county area of Quebec. The land around Penetanguishene had just opened up. Prior to that there was a small french communitee who had been involved in the fur trade who moved in from Drummond Island once the US Canada border was established. The local priest visited areas in Quebec trying to incourage people to come and settle in the newly opened "Queen's Bush" My 2nd great grand father Francios-Xavier Hamelin dit Bello and his wife Lucie André dit St.Amand(t) sons & daughters left Quebec and aquired a farm near Penetanguishene. A couple brothers (Isaac & Jean-Baptiste) and cousins of Francios also did the same thing. Many of the current French families such as Gatien, Maheu, Courtemanche Andre, St Amand(t) etc all came at the urging of the priest from Lafontaine to leave Soulanges County Quebec and settle in the forests of Simcoe County Ontario.

A few families like the Lefebvre first settled at Lindsay Ontario. They left Quebec just after the Small Pox epidemic in the mid 1800's.

Francios-Xavier and Lucie Hamelin had a son, my great grand father, Jean Joseph Hamelin who married Philanese Maheu.

Joseph and Philanese Hamelin in turn had a daughter, my grand mother, Agnes Florentine Hamelin.

Agnes had many brothers and sisters. Henry, James, Roselio, Jean-Baptiste, Hormisdas, Therese, Alice and Anne.

Agnes married into the Zoschke family. The Zoschke's had left Split, Pommerania in the 1880's and settled on a farm on Midland Point. There is a road up there named after the family. My Great grand father Karl Henry Zoschke was 18 when he landed and as soon as he got off the boat he headed out West to fight Riel in the North West Rebelion. He had previously served in the Prussian army since he turned 16.

Back to the Hamelins.

Louis and Francois Hamelin were brothers, born in St. Mathurin de la Dagueniere, a small community on the edge of Angers on the River Maine, at the confluence of the Loire, in the ancient French province of Anjou.

It's certain, too, that they begin turning up in New France in about 1671... that they married the daughters of the seigneur (or, governor) of Grondines, Jacques Aubert, a 100-square-mile settlement of rectangular farming plots sitting elbow-to-elbow with the narrow ends fronting on the St. Lawrence River... that Louis bought the property from his father-in-law... and that the two brothers, and some of their children, and some of their children's children, presided for nearly 70 years as seigneurs over Grondines,.

A number of Louis' descendants , and a few of Francois', became voyageurs -- daring Indian traders who paddled their canoes westward to the Great Lakes through hostile forests in search or furs - some of them staying to settle and pioneer what was then the American "west."

Francois' descendants, many of them, migrated to St.-Philippe-de-Laprairie (south across the St. Lawrence from Montreal), became rebels under the rule of the British, fled Quebec after the abortive rebellion of 1837-38, and settled in Northern New York, ultimately spreading to Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts and elsewhere. Today, the name is still unusual on this side of the ocean, but there are upwards of 400 families in the U.S., from Minnesota to California to Florida, and more across Canada.

Meanwhile, fewer than 700 people live in picturesque, remote Grondines, among them only a couple of Hamelins.

Louis and Francois administered the land together, fathered two interesting and diverse family lines, and were buried beside one another in the church at Grondines. That 1713 structure was washed away in the flood of 1831. Louis and Francois, whatever was left of them, were washed away with it. A naturaly induce buriel at sea!

In 1759, the world changed for the Hamelins and for all of New France when the British beat the French on the Plains of Abraham outside Quebec in the decisive battle of the seven-year French & Indian War.

By 1763, they controlled all of Canada.

Perhaps Rene Hamelin, saw what was coming when he left the nest at Grondines and moved to LaPrairie, in what are now called the Montreal "suburbs." The seigneural system was uniquely French, and couldn't last. Already, the Hamelin land at Grondines long since had been divided among Louis and Francois' sons. But it held together into the 1800s, and Hamelins still wore the title of seigneur.

Only they weren't Hamelins anymore. Francois' four eldest sons adopted "dit" names: Laurent "Bellou," Rene "Laganiere," Francois "Grondines" and Joseph "Lacavee." Though the Hamelin name persisted, some descendants adopted the new names in place of the old.

Laurant, Rene and Francois, and kid brother Alexis, all were known as "seigneur of part of Grondines" according to notary records of the late 1730s - as was Joseph-Marie Hamelin dit Pagnol, son of Louis.

But sic transit gloria. With the British victory, the Hamelins were nobodies again, like the rest of the French.

Their numbers weren't great, even then. From perhaps 25,000 at Francois' death in 1725, Canada numbered only 70,000 when the British took over 38 years later. In New England, there were 2.5 million Europeans -- 35 times as many!

In 1776, during the American revolution, Joseph Hamelin (almost certainly the son of Joseph Hamelin dit Lacavee, and the grandson of Francois) captained Grondines' militia unit of 48 men battling the abortive Yankee invasion. The size of his unit tells us how small Grondines was, because every man between 16 and 60 was required to serve.

My branch of Francios Hamelin's family left Grodines and settled at St-Eustache, Deux Montagnes, Quebec. St Eustache was a mixed parish of French and Aboriginals. One or two generations at St. Eustache and another move on to Soulanges County.

Three generations in Soulanges County and then the move to Penetanguishene. My Great grand father Jean Joseph Hamelin born in Soulanges County Quebec, left Penetanguishene and worked in Michigan for a time. Three of his children (Louis, Henry and Alice) were born there.

Hello, don't know how often you would frequent this site to answer this but I thought I would try anyhow. I was just wondering how common the last name Hamelin is in penetang., it is my last name and my dad's family are all from penetang, so are all of the Hamelin's from the area closely or loosely related? I'm rarely in the area so I really haven't any idea and i'm mostly curious because i'm trying to figure out the truth of my heritage. although we're french my dad and I look suspiciously native, and I would love to solve the mystery as to who in my family was aboriginal. Hope to hear from you:)

Like joe I was born in Utica, NY but never had the pleasure of meeting that branch of the family while He lived here. however we used to exchange e-mails occasionally.at the time I was having a tough time doing research, since then I have found much information.

Séraphine Hamelin was baptized on september 30th 1822 at Notre-Dame-de-la
Visitation in Champlain and her parents were Pierre Hamelin and
Marie-Beaufort-Brunelle.

Pierre Hamelin's was baptized on June 29th 1752 in St-Charles, Grondines.
His parents were Louis Hamelin and Charlotte Lécuyer/Leguay.

I'm wondering if anyone could help me out as well with my research.. some names just seem off a bit and I need a little help making sure that the people I have are biologically the children of this family.
I'm a Cossette/Sauvageau which means my lines cross with the Toupins, which cross into the Hamelins and then lead into this line.
I have a Seraphine Hamelin/Gamelin who married a Toussaint Toupin.. most of her records are blank except for rootsweb.

Rootsweb lists her parents as Marie Beaufort-Brunel and Pierre Hamelin, but I can't find any clear birth records on her. NosOrigines just lists her as born 1822, but no clear birth date or location or parents.

I also have Pierre's parents as Pierre Hamelin and Theotiste or Theosime Hamelin..
I have Pierre's parents as Louis Hamelin and Charlotte L'Ecuyer.
and Theotiste's as Laurent Hamelin and Marie Anne Richer.

Can anyone help me with info on birth dates so I can make sure the information is right?

thanks, I had that information, But i only have a first name for my great grandmother, Fredrick's wife. I have no surname for her, and given the propensity for misspellings in censuses, I can't even be sure her first name is corrrect. I have it as Amelia.but I also have seen it as Emelia.

Also, if you look at the 1880 census and look for Frederick Hamlin, you will find him in Champlain, Clinton, New York, age 15 and he was born in US. It shows the parents: Moxim (Maxime) and Emily (melina). Their ages also correspond with their birth in Canada. He also had a younger sister by the name of Omeline.

My Grandfather was Clovis Hamelin born in NY state, possibly Mooer's Fork's NY or someplace in Clinton County ,or Franklin County, NY on October 13 1892. He married Cecelia Deyette sometime before 1916. in all my resarch I have never been able to find him anywhere except for my Dad's baptismal certificate, WWI Draft card, and some newspaper references.Does anyone have a Clovis Hamelin in their line at all?

Marguerite Hamelin was married to George McBeth (McBeath), and I do not know who her parents were. With George, she had the following children:

James, born in NY state - 1850-1893; died in VT
Elizabeth, born in NY - 1853-1893, died in VT
George, born in NY - 1859-1935, died in W. Palm Beach, FL
Joseph, born in NY - 1864 to abt. 1889; died in NY, maybe Plattsburgh.
Josephine, born in Chicopee, MA 1870; died in Burlington, VT 1961.

I looking for any & all info on Joseph Jules Hamelin,MD
(aka Dr. JJ) who was a "prairie doctor" and surgeon in
North Battleford,Sask. He was first married (1908) to Marie Louise Stella Danis. I'm not sure what happened to her. I believe he later married Evelyne Creedon, I think she may have been his wife at the time of his death on 24 Feb.1956,
in Vancouver,B.C. I believe Dr. JJ adopted a daughter who was called Marguerite. I Know nothing about her.
Also, some time after 1912, Dr. JJ and his wife Stella
"took in" 2 young nieces,Jeannette and Madeleine Lafreniere.
In 1912,the sisters were young...JEANNETTE(abt.age 9) & MADELEINE(abt age 7) and they were the daughters of Stella Danis Hamelin's sister,VICTORIA DANIS LAFRENIERE, who became a widow in 1912, and also lost her toddler son "Denis". Victoria's husband,Jean-Baptiste Lafreniere (musician) died of consumption. A month later baby Denis died..of consumption also, perhaps? After that at some point the girls were sent to the Hamelin residence in Saskatchewan...Madeleine called it the "coldest place on earth". Madeleine was my Grandmother. The girls lived with the Hamelin's until their 18th birthdays. I do not know what happened to their mother, Victoria. I never was able to learn much of their story, as it was too sad for my
grandmother to recall.

The US. We are unsure where his travels may have taken him, from what we know of him, he travelled extensively up until the 1930's when he married my great grandmother and settled in California.

I am looking for a woman my great grandfather, Napoleon Hamlin may have married. I don't know where or whom. He told his daughter May, that he had been married before, that he had a baby boy with said wife, but that the wife died either during labor or shortly there after. He gave the baby boy up for adoption, because he was unable to provide for it. I have two windows that it could fit in. 1900-1908 or 1919-1932.

My g-grandfather Joseph Hamelin, kid brother of the Marguerite in question, was born in 1822 in the tiny town of St-Philippe-de-Laprairie, across the St. Lawrence from Montreal. Their g-grandfather, Rene Hamelin, settled there in 1762. It was great farming country. The family fled south into New York (where the land is mostly rocks) after 16-year-old Joe was arrested (and quickly released) following the abortive rebellion of 1838. A cousin who lived in the same tiny town, 21-year-old Francois-Xavier Hamelin, was one of the 12 French "Patriotes" hanged.

Thank you for your response. This could have been my Marguerite. Do you know where in Canada yours was born. The closest city named in my Marguerite's death certificate was St. Isham, but I've found no city ever existed; it could have been St. Isen; I don't know.

Angeline Hamelin and brother Joseph Hamelin, my g-grandfather (b. 1822), had a sister Marguerite -- but she was born in 1814, and beyond that I know nothing of her. No others seem close to right. Sorry.

Do you have a Marguerite Hamelin (Amelin) in your tree? I have both Hamelin and Dupuis ancestry but on different sides of my family. Maybe connected???

Did Angeline have a sister named Marguerite, if you know? My Marguerite Hamelin married a George McBeth and they lived in both NY and MA, then Marguerite came to VT. Marguerite would have been born about 1826 to 1832 as I have conflicting dates on official records.

Francois Hamelin, b. 1876 in Alberta, married Helene Delorme (b. 1886)on 8 Aug 1905 in St. Laurent, Lake Manitoba, Manitoba. There was a daughter, Marie A.E. Hamelin, born in 1906.

The parents of Helene Delorme were Alexis Delorme (1852-1933) and Justine Boyer (1848-1927). They were living in Fisher Branch, Manitoba when they died.

They are part of my Delorme line.

Nov. 26, 1873, Ellenburg, NY. Witnesses to the wedding: Joseph Hamelin, Louis Dupuis. The correct name is Angeline, not Marcelline. She was my grandfather's older sister. Do you have Peter's parents' names? I am at a wall with them.
