Captain Richard Hamilton (b1826)

I need advice on locating Richard Hamilton (b1826) who died a violent death on the way to a Canadian Gold Rush between 1875 and 1891.

Richard Hamilton is my 3rd Great Grandfather but his mystery has made him loom larger than his 1/32nd of my genetic heritage. He was born to a landed family in Ireland, a family who took to the sea and built things that bore their name. Richard was the eldest son of the heir to the property.

At age 20, he joined the merchant navy as a midshipman, and, story has it, attained the rank of Captain before he quit the merchant navy in 1861. He married in Ireland and then decided to emigrate to South Africa. He and his wife sailed his own boat from Dublin to Durban, South Africa where they met and stayed with the Governor in Pietermaritzburg.

He tried farming but found it hard and the farm ultimately failed. His wife died in childbirth but he remarried and had three more children in Durban.

Then, after the birth of his last daughter (my great-great grandmother), he learned of a Gold Rush in Canada. He left his young wife with 5 children and sailed for Ireland to ask his mother for money. Obtained it, and sailed for the USA to head for Canada.

The family was told he was murdered on a train during a fight after a gambling dispute.

We have no family records of the date of death, one note in the family says he died in Boston.

Its a mystery. We would love to find out what happened to Richard Hamilton.

Shannon

I have some information on the John G. Hamilton family in Fayette County, IL. I have been to Harris Cemetery there near Loogootee and have photos of their grave stones. Some were hard to read so I went back a few weeks ago and used chalk to bring out the inscriptions better. The only child of John and Nancy's that I have documented very well is their son John B. Hamilton who married Martha E. Pippin. There was a story published back in the 1970's in an issue of "Fayette Facts" about John and Nancy 's other son William Hamilton who was in the Civil War but the story does not hold a lot of water. Anyway, if you are interested in what I have I would be glad to share it with you. You can email me directly at justin.r.pippin@us.army.mil
William Hamilton 1705-1788 (son of Audley?)

I'm descended from William Hamilton b. 1705 in Tyrone, Ireland. He married Alice (possibly Alice Mann?). Their daughter Jane Hamilton b. 1738 in Ireland m. William Mann, also from Ireland. The two families, Mann & Hamilton, immigrated to Augusta Co., Virginia. This bit I know for sure... what I'm having problems with are:

1) I have William Hamilton as the son of Audley Harrison Hamilton and Eleanor Adams. I have no evidence of this, just word of mouth. Did Audley have a son named William? Some ancestry members have even suggested that Audley never existed.

2) If Audley did exist, is he the son of James Hamilton & Catherine Leslie, or Alexander Hamtilton & Sushanna Harrison (this would explain his middle name being Harrison).

3) Who are the parents of James Hamilton, possible father #1 of Audley.

4)Who are the parents of Alexander Hamilton, possible father #2 of Audley.

I haven't traced James because I believed Alexander was more likely. I have several possible fathers for Alexander. One is William Hamilton b. 1608, the 3rd son of James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Abercorn. Apparently it is documented in the Dictionary of National Biography that he died without children, but I haven't found that bit of info in my reading of Vol. 24 of the DNB (the Vol. w/ Hamilton). If Alexander is the son of William Hamilton, who was his mother? I have seen Jean Colquhoun, Catherine Kennedy and an unknown Montgomery all listed as possible mothers for Audley. From the dates I have, Jean died before he was born.

I seem to have misplaced my info on the other possible father of Alexander but it also led back to Claud Hamilton, 1st Lord Paisley... through another Alexander (though Claud's son Alexander died as an infant)

Basically its all a jumbled mess and I'd love to know if anyone has any information about this family with documentation. Please message me, email me or contact me right here if you have anything to share.

William M Hamilton - Maine to Providence

I am interested in any information on the following William M. Hamilton family who lived in East Providence in 1900 and 1910.
William M Hamilton married Annie Sarah MacDonald on 31 Dec 1896 in Providence.
William Hamilton was born in Maine (1866)
Wife Annie Sarah (MacDonald) was born in Kings Co Nova Scotia. Annie was a 1/2 sister to my GF and her death was listed in our MacDonald family Bible. Annie's mother was Lavinia Harris of Cornwallis Nova Scotia.

Annie S Hamilton William East Providence, Providence, Rhode Island abt 1868 Canada English White Wife
William Hamilton
Home in 1900: East Providence, Providence, Rhode Island
Age: 28
Estimated birth year: abt 1872
Birthplace: Maine

William Hamilton 28
Annie S Hamilton 32

I originally thought that they may have had a daughter named Annie J, but Annie J did not show on the 1900 or 1910 census. Her name comes from the death record of Annie Sarah as kin2. I can find no record of a William hamilton with Dau Annie J in subsequent census records in RI or in Maine. It is possible that Annie J Hamilton was a niece or sister of William.

Annie died in 1914 and was buried at Plymouth MA
Name: Annie S Hamilton
Relation: wf
Kin 1: William M Hamilton
Kin 2: Annie J Hamilton
Death Date: 24 Jul 1914
Age: 50 yrs

It is possible that William Hamilton returned to Maine.
I found the death of a William Hamilton who was born in 1872 Maine

William HAMILTON
Birth Date: 25 Oct 1872
Death Date: Dec 1965
Social Security Number: 004-03-4717
State or Territory Where Number Was Issued: Maine
Actual Death Residence: Maine

William M Hamilton does not show on the 1920 US census anywhere in the US, though a William Hamilton, b abt 1872, is shown in Montana in 1920

Regards,
Ben MacDonald
Glendale AZ
I will be interested if your connection to this Alexander Hamilton develops.
I am wondering what is known about that Alexander Hamilton. I have been interested a James Hamilton who made a will in 1815 (probated in 1817) in Columbia County, Ga.. James was a Rev. Soldier (Lt.) and had received 1000 acres of land from the state of Virginia in Ohio. In his will, James directed that his brother, Alexander, sell his land in Ohio with proceeds to go for the benefit of his "brother and sister who reside in the Kingdom of Ireland".

Descendants of Gavin, Andrew, and Ninian Hamilton

I am a Hamilton researching my Hamilton family tree and looking for descendants of Gavin Hamilton (1630-1698), his son Andrew Hamilton (abt 1665-1719), and his son Ninian Hamilton (1717-1784). Many descendant have been found and several websites chronicle different lines of this family.

There are still several lines from Andrew and Ninian that we are researching but have yet to find the documentation needed for confirmation. The good news is that several descendants of this line have participated in the Hamilton Family DNA project and have confirmed our paper trails with DNA. We now have a DNA model for descendants of this line. This confirmation will allows others to confirm their lines or make connections where records may be lacking.

If you believe you are descended from this line or if you believe you might be connected to this line or the persons listed below and would like to participate in the project to confirm you lineage, please contact me at the below.

Here is a list of family lines we are still researching and have not yet confirmed.

Children of Andrew Hamilton (d abt 1719) who lived in Prince George, Maryland.
+ Gavin Hamilton (1701-1750?)
+ George Hamilton (1712-1752) records indicate his children may have died with no descendants
+ Andrew Hamilton (1716-1777)

Children of Ninian Hamilton (d 1784) who lived in Randolph County
+ Thomas Hamilton (b abt 1741)
+ Mathew Hamilton (b abt 1744) may have died as a result of the regulators movement
+ Charles Hamilton (1748-1803?)

Others persons who may be related to this Hamilton Family, but lacking confirmation.

-Hanson Hamilton who lived in NC and participated in the NC Regulators movement in about 1770
-John Hamilton (1782-1885) who married Nancy and lived in Bibb County, AL in 1850
-Robert Hamilton (b abt 1814 in GA) who married Rebecca and lived in Bibb County, AL in 1850 & 1860
-William Hamilton (b in 1770’s) who lived in Bibb County, AL in 1830 & 1840
-Mathew Hamilton living in Ninety-Six District, SC in 1790’s

Geographical regions in which this line of the Hamiltons lived
Catawba & Lincoln County North Carolina 1760-1900
Pendleton & Ninety-Six South Carolina 1780-1800
Green & Barren County Kentucky 1790-1810
Bibb County Alabama 1840-1900

If you recognize any of the above as possible ancestors I would like to connect with you to further discuss our family.

Colby Hamilton
gavinhamiltonancestors@gmail.com
H-413, Group I

Websites of Gavin Hamilton lines
http://history.loftinnc.com/Hamilton.htm
http://home.netcom.com/~fzsaund/hamilton.html
http://www.fmoran.com/hamil.html
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/h/a/m/Lloyd-Hamil...

Hamilton Family DNA Project
http://www.personal.psu.edu/gah4/HamDNA/Results.html

Prince Edward Co, VA, ca 1800

Margaret Downs [sometimes Downes] made a will 22 Sep 1799 giving her son Robert Downs her LAND, and dividing the value of her whole estate equally between Robert and her daughter Margaret. Proved 21 Apr 1800.

Marriage index shows Margaret Downs marrying 4 Nov 1803 one John Hamilton.

Has anyone researching Prince Edward come across documents which refer to any of these people? Deeds (grantor, grantee, witness, neighbor, previous owner)? Orders?

The first reference to Downs in the personal property tax was 1796. Tax lists checked through 1809.

Chancery file 1805-027 shows that Margaret Downs bought 75 acres from Edward Radford, who had purchased the same parcel at a Sheriff's sale for taxes. At the time of sale the land was occupied by Robert Downs and John Hambleton [Hamilton]. Adjoining landowners at time would have included John Billups, Charles Selby and Thomas Yuille. The land located somewhere on Spring Creek.

There is an Evander Hamilton in this line born Jan 1890, so I know it isn't who you are looking for. Just wondered if you have found any information on William Albert Hamilton. She says she has heard family rumors he may have been illigitimate. I have asked her to see her brother about DNA testing. My husband also is from SC, George Washington Hamilton, but I have not gotten any closer on him. He lived in Coosa County Alabama in 1840 and 1850. Iam thinking his father or relative was William Hamilton who lived nearby in the Alabama 1840 census

Check Talladega County. I live in this area and my husband's line is Hamilton, but I don't see names you mention, although Delilah sounds familiar. His family lived in talladega county and the line was the road, his family has been done twice in the same county, different kids birth days, but that happened. When Lay Dam was put in 1930's our family moved to Coosa and Chilton, Coosa if you wanted to rent and farm chilton if you wanted factory work.
Goverment gave them near nothing for their land. they had no choice.
My database is on rootsweb.ancestry.com database pkcb113, will get you easily to my husband's family. If nothing else it will help you rule out this line from yours if it doesn't match.

Hi Jason. I am hoping this is still a good address for you since I made the original post in 2001. My grandfather is Paul Raymond Hamilton. His Father and mother were James W. Hamilton ( born around 1898) and Edna (born around 1905) Hamilton.
Delilah, Colonel, Annie, Dewie, Ella, and Easter Mae Blackwell were his aunts and uncles. I have found them in an 1870 census, but only Delilah, and Colonel and Ella. I shows a Lila Hamilton listed as James W.'s mother living in the home. My granfather says that was not his grandmothers name(or atleast as he new it...such as went by middle name, etc.)
Everything I am finding is, like you said, Chilton County area.
My grandfather said he does remember James W. Hamilton trying to sell Delilah. He was too young to know why but he says that he did not. Unsure about that situation. If you have found anything else, please let me know. My email is now angel.little1970@yahoo.com

I think I'm in the John Hamilton family you mentioned as William's brother. I went to Marion & Dillon Counties a couple of times; I transcribed some of the records I found and uploaded them to the USGenWeb Archives. I also did a little cemetery work in findagrave.com. While in SC at a Hamilton Cemetery, I met a descendant of the William line and also Helen Moody, whose husband was in that line. Helen has a site called Helen's Little Corner and has been extremely helpful to me; if you haven't already contacted her, I suggest you do.

When he came down from Cambridge, he became Land Agent to a big landowner in Northumberland or Durham. He was believed to have embezzled money, and his father arranged that no court action would be taken provided he left the country. "He never married or entered into any profession" G.W.Walker, from his work on the ROBINSON family, that I read in the library at the Soc of Gen.

I wonder if anyone knows anything more about him :-
When he went to Canada (if he did) and by what ship, to where ?
Place and date of death?
DID he marry ? Breed ? Work ?
Or confirmation of those details above ?

There is an Alfred HAMILTON born “in Africa” in 1849, who joined the American Navy – might this be him ?

Please do not quote this entire message !
