Joseph Hampshire and Elizabeth Hepper

Hello,

I am attempting to research the ancestry of Joseph Hampshire, born c.1814, Yorkshire, who was married to Elizabeth Hepper (born 1816, Yorkshire).

According to their marriage record on Ancestry.com, Joseph's father was William Hampshire; Joseph's mother appears under the name of Rachel Chambers, widow, in the 1861 census.

I suspect that this is William Hampshire who married Rachel Fozzard on 25 Apr. 1808 in Wakefield, Yorkshire; they had at least six children, including Joseph. (Source: FamilySearch.org)

After William's death - sometime between 1819 and 1831 - Rachel re-married to Luke Chambers on 26 Jul. 1831, in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. (Source: FamilySearch.org)

Assuming the above is correct, I am now attempting to determine the identity of William's parents. I do not yet have an age for William, but I suspect that he might be a son of Matthew Hampshire and Mary Pickersgill, born c.1786, Thornhill, Yorkshire.

Is anyone else researching the family tree of Joseph Hampshire and can confirm or deny the above?

Thank you for your time,
Craig Sheldon
My records from Germany show a Johann born 1732 and from the same family an Andreas born 1726. If that Johann is the John Hampshire of York County he would have been about 19-20 when immigrated but I have no confirmation of that but it is probable he married Anna Martia in 1751 and had their first born-Barnet in 1753.

Mark Hampshire
Lavon- I sent a message to the lady in Ala. and to Don regarding the possibility of my Hampshire name and the "slave" or Afro-American connection. Mind you race does not matter to me being a desendant of a Yankee but the possiblity of a connection might me that a brother of my line did go to Louisiana in early 1800s by the name of Jacob and his son-John went on to a place called "Hamshire"(still on the map) near Galveston,Tex. and with research including a book called "Destiny in Texas" there was mention of the "slave" and taking of the name issue. Best of luck on research.

Don I sent a reply to the Little Rock lady but for your information my great-great grandfather-Jonas of Ohio was a Yankee and we had no "slaves" in our line. However one of the original ancestor-John Hamshire of York Co. ,Pa had a son named Jacob who went to Louisiana and married a Hanna Lee and their son-John did go to a place still existing called Hamshire near Galveston, Tex. and I am sure he had "slaves" who might have taken the name. There was also a "freed" black who lived in Rhode Island. Hope this might help.

I am Mark Hampshire-8th generation of John (Johann)Hampshire of Germany who immigrated to Pa. in 1740s. My great great grandfather was Jonas of Ohio. A desendant of John's via Barnet. As far as I know none of my ancestors had "slaves" who would be classified as "Afro-American" .However, one of John's sons , a brother of my Barnet by the name of Jacob did go to Louisiana and then his descendant-John went to Hamshire,Tex. (a town near Galveston) and I am certain he had "slaves". You might check that line. Best regards.

I am sorry I do not know your connection to the Hampshire clan?
Have we checked the federal census of Allegeny Co.-Pittsburg area? David would have been about right for a John (a father about late 30s)Another source we might check are Lutheran church records and also books on early settlers of the Pttsburg area. Keep in touch and maybe we could go more direct thru our full e-mails?

Mark

I am not sure if I am really looking for John Hampshire/Hamsher, but it's my best guess at this point. I am back to David Hamphsire, b. 1821 in PA, d. 1864 Chester Co., PA. He mar. Margaret Cutler in 1842 at St. Mary's Prostestant Episcopal Church, Warwick, Chester Co., PA. Do you have any info which would cement my David as the son of your John? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. God bless.

I have that he sired a child by Annie (no last name listed) and either ended up in Halifax,Canada and started a family or I have records of both Alfred and Annie in prison in England. Nothing about Cape Town. Would love to know. He is a direct relation.

Hello cousin,

We share the same great grandfather, my grandfather was William's sibling, Edmund who was the youngest of the clan, my father was David who was Edmund's youngest.

Perhaps we could communicate by e-mail and see what information we could share, rather spotty on my side as my fathers family was very tight lipped and did not speak much about family history, I do know a bit about Sarah Broughton and that her family had an ancestral castle located at Broughton on Furness and that her father was a member of parliment and a baronet, also that a long succession of Hampshire's were silver smiths, also that the name Edmund had been passed down through many generations, also the middly name of Kay for male Hampshire children (my one son carries that middle name and the other carries Edmund, as well as some of my nephews). My grandfather Edmund settled in Rochester NY and had 5 children, none of whom are alive, they were Edmund, John Richard, David (my father), Betty, Mildred and Leonore. My grandfather Edmund was born To Edmund and Sarah in Swissvale, PA in 1888.
I have a collage of our mutual great grandparents and their children which I am sure would include a picture of your grandfather, I am not sure of all their names so you may be able to help in that respect, I dont believe I have them all scanned but can take some shots with my digital camera to e-mail to you.
Please drop me a line, I dont have many living relatives and it would be nice to connect with "lost" family members.

Regards

Jeffrey Karl Hampshire

Alfred Hampshire, of Lancashire UK, 1876

Hello,

I'm researching Alfred Hampshire, who I have reason to believe was born in Oldham, Lancashire, in 1876; and subsequently left South Africa to fight with the British forces around the time of the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899 - 1902).

As I have been unable to find any Alfred Hampshire's born in Oldham in 1876, the record that to my eye has the best potential is that of an Alfred Hampshire born in 1878, to William and Mary Hampshire. I have found mention of him in the 1881 Census (on FamilySearch.org and FreeBMD.org.uk); I believe in the Lancashirebmd.org.uk, where his mother's maiden name is given as Nield; and 1881-census.co.uk.

Whether or not this is the man I am looking for I honestly don't know; he certainly does not seem to appear in the 1901-census.com, which is when Alfred Hampshire is supposed to have already been in South Africa.

Regarding his military career, little is known other than that he allegedly trained troops at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town. He may have also served in World War One. Ancestry.co.uk does have the WWI Pension Records for a Alfred Hampshire, but neither date nor place of birth appears to be given.

During his time in South Africa he married Evangalina (maiden name unknown) and fathered at least three children: Wilfred George, Alfred Albert Victor and Lily.

He died and was buried in 1945 in Cape Town.

Any assistance you might be able to provide is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Craig

Hello Al, Many thanks for your reply, rather confused now since i was sure i had found my Henry Hampshire with his father and siblings .The dates fitted perfectly, however i have since tracked down Henry's marriage to my GtGtGrandmother Sally in 1846 and he gives his fathers name as James Hampshire not Joseph as i first thought. So back to the drawing board.Rather odd though as this is the only Hampshire family in the area. The 1841 census of course only gives Yorkshire as place of birth no town so unless i can find him with his family it could be a long search !! Pam.
