Hi
My name is Virginia Hampton Gammons. I was reading your post and I have a Nolin Hampton in my line of Hamptons. My Nolin is the son of Zachariah Hampton and Mary Duran Knowland Hampton. Zachariah is the son of Captain Andrew Hampton of Granville, NC. Zachariah was killed in the war of Eutaw Spring SC. Mary remarried a John Wilbourne. Nolin had a brother named John who remained in Granville. Nolin was born in Orange Co NC according to my records. He is listed on the 1830 Carroll Co TN census record along with 3 of his sons. Noah, Thomas(which is my line), and James. Nolin married Winifred Cozart in Orange Co NC. It is said that Nolin took a grant that was left to him and his brother after his father died. As far as I can find out John stayed in NC. I have Nolin's and Winnifred's childred listed as James, Thomas, Noah, Elvis S, Elizabeth, Mary, Duranna and another daughter who I can't find her name. Nolin died in Carroll Co TN in 1849 I don't know if this is your nolin or not.

Did find more about Kate Phelan Hampton. In the 1900 Census, Kate stated she had given birth to no children. She was living in New York City, where she died in 1923.

1900 CENSUS, Manhattan, New York, New York
[living on West Trinity-Fifth Street]
KATE P. HAMPTON, born July 1855, age 44, widow, the census states she has given birth to no children, MS/AL/AL [living alone]

November 14, 1923, Augusta Chronicle: BODY OF MRS. WADE HAMPTON, Columbia, SC, Nov 12: The body of Mrs. Wade Hampton, widow of the eldest son of the late general, who died in New York City, Sunday, is expected to reach Columbia Wednesday morning. Plans for the funeral have not yet been announced. Mrs. Hampton, before her marriage to Major Hampton in 1878 (sic), was Miss KATE PHELAN. She has been a resident of New York since her husband's death, six months after their marriage.

To the best of my knowledge, Wade Hampton IV and Kate Phelan had no children. They married 11 Aug 1879, and Wade died 22 Dec 1879, so 4 months after they married. I have, so far, found nothing to suggest there was a posthumous child, but I can’t find Kate’s obituary, yet.

August 17, 1879, Augusta Chronicle: HAMPTON-PHELAN: Special from the Courier-Journal, August 12: Yesterday afternoon, at Grace Church, Mr. Wade Hampton, Jr. of Mississippi, and Miss Kate O. Phelan, of Memphis, were married; Rev. L.P. Tschiffely, the rector, officiating. The groom is the son of Senator Hampton of South Carolina, and the bride is a member of one of the most distinguished families of the South, her father, recently deceased, having been one of the foremost Southern statesmen, who gave t heir services to the Confederacy. The high-contracting parties are at present exiles from the yellow fever country, and took advantage of their meeting in Louisville to blend their lives and fortunes. There were no attendants, the immediate members of the family present being the mother of the bride and Mr. James Phelan, her brother. Mr. and Mrs. Hampton left the city immediately for the East.

I have several obituaries for Wade Hampton IV in my files, two of them being:

December 26, 1879, New Haven Register: "In the death of COLONEL WADE HAMPTON, JR., which occurred at Lake Washington, Mississippi, yesterday, Senator Wade Hampton of South Carolina has met with a heavy blow. The senator is said to be quite inform and to have depended greatly on his son. Col. Wade Hampton, Jr., was the fifth of the name, and with the death of his father the name will die out. He was but recently married and leaves no children. His great-grandfather was Col. William Campbell of King's Mountain fame, who married the niece of Patrick Henry. From this union sprang a numerous and influential progeny. His mother was a sister of Hon. W.C. Preston, the "silver-voiced orator" of South Carolina, and his aunts were Mrs. Governor McDowell of Virginia; Mrs. Governor Floyd and Mrs. General Carrington, of the same; and Mrs. R.I. Breckinridge of Kentucky, all women distinguished for a lofty and graceful presence. Col. Wade Hampton acted as aide-de-camp to General Joseph E. Johnson during the late war, who was very much attached to him. At the time of his death he was a member of the Mississippi legislature."

December 30, 1879, New York Herald: "MAJOR WADE HAMPTON'S BURIAL: (By telegraph to the Herald), Columbia, SC, Dec. 29, 1879: The remains of Major Wade Hampton reached Columbia today and were interred in the old family burying ground in Trinity churchyard. A large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends were in attendance, among whom were twenty or thirty Negroes, former slaves of the Hampton family. Senator Hampton, who is still in Mississippi, was so crushed under the weight of this affliction as to be unable to come on with his son's remains."

In 1898, Kate Phelan Hampton published "The Short Southern Stories of Mrs. Wade Hampton, Jr." published by McGill and Wallace.

Hi Clive I have HAMPTON ancestors from that part of the country. I am descended from John HAMPTON bapt. 1704 Great Cheverell. What also links me to your possible family is that he married Eleanor SELF 1740 Warminster St Denys. Their son Robert born 1746 married Rhoda REEVES 1772 Great Cheverell. Their son Robert born 1777 Bratton married Hannah MUSPRATT 1802 Wilton nr Salisbury.Their son Robert born Wilton 1811 and his wife Frances Stafford NOAD settled in NZ in 1854. Other children ended up in New York and Connecticut. Whether we are connected and how close I guess DNA could confirm or otherwise.

I would like to make contact with any descendants of the siblings America Ann Hampton, born around 1833, James W. Hampton, born around 1835, and Zachariah or Zachary Hampton, born around 1848. Their parents were Enoch Hampton and Lucretia Duncan, and they lived in Martin Co., IN. Enoch and Lucretia were married 5 Apr 1831 in Clark Co., KY.

I am looking a descendant who is willing to do a Family Finder DNA test so that I can find out for certain if Enoch Hampton and Lucretia Duncan are my ancestors. If they are my ancestors, I think we could determine the parentage of Enoch Hampton through a comparison of our test results. I have a clue among my test matches.

I think it likely that Family Tree DNA will have a sale on the Family Finder test on DNA Day (Apr. 20).

Thanks!

Carol Anne

I went through the ones for Orange Co., NC, where he was on the 1800 census, page by page and couldn't find him.

Carol Anne

Tom,

I've seen it written Nowlin, Nolin, and Nolan, but as his mother's maiden name appears to have been Knowland, that was probably his actual given name. Nolin Hampton married Winifred Cozart 30 Mar 1793 in Orange Co., NC.

I know that I am descended from some Hampton, but I don't know who. One of my "Family Finder" DNA test matches is a descendant of Winifred Cozart's brother, so there is a possibility that I am descended from Nolin.

Carol Anne

Carol Anne, could I ask about the Knowland you are looking for? Are you sure of that name? Reason I ask is that I have a Rowland (also seen as Roland) in my line, born in NC 1794, died 1877 in Neodesha KS. I know one son was Rowland Thomas, and the info I have lists a male born ca. 1818 in KY but I don't have the name. Rowland's father was Ephraim H. Hampton. Just wondering...
Tom Hampton

I am looking for James Hampton, born in 1834 in North Carolina, possibly Wilkes County. He was a Confederate soldier and ended up in Greene County, Tennessee where he died. I have him in the 1900 census with his wife, Nancy, but in the 1910 census Nancy is listed as the widowed mother living with their son, Riley Wilson Hampton. I have to believe James died some time around 1905, based on the dates on his state pension application. I would really like to get his date of death and a burial location if anyone has snippets that would help.

I find all this so interesting. I am a Hampton on my fathers side. I have traced us back as far as my great-great grandfather. According to my grandmother - who married a Hampton - she recalled meeting the Hampton family in North Carolina and at that time, her soon to be father-in law explained the family history and how they their family had been very weatlthy back in the day and the story about Wade Hampton III came into the conversation and I think my great grandfather was related as a great nephew? Alot of the details he told my nana have checked out and thanks to her fabulous memory and my videos of her telling me stories about my grandfather and great grandfather I have a chance of continuing my search into the Hampton line. My grandfather was born and raised in NC and also lived in VA.

I would be interested in any help anyone has as far as searching records or great books with our surname HAMPTON.

The information posted here concerning Mary McDuffie Hampton, daughter of Alfred Hampton, is incorrect. She was my grandmother. She was married, and she has two daughters, one of whom is my mother. Gen. Wade Hampton III has three male descendants: my brother, and my two male cousins.

I think that the more Hampton descendants that do the Family Finder test, the better it will be for all. Family Finder (and other autosomal tests) also allows you to connect with descendants of the ancestors of the WIVES of the Hamptons as well, which will eventually, I think, help sort out cases where there is confusion between two Hamptons with the same given name.

The autosomal results are harder to work with, but I think it's fun! And I think that more and better tools will be developed to analyze Family Finder data in the future. It's still rather new.

I would suggest both a Y-DNA test and a Family Finder for direct male line Hamptons and a Family Finder for all other Hampton descendants who can afford it and who are willing to share info with their matches on the list of predicted cousins which constitutes their results.

Carol Anne
Before I did the DNA I traced my ancestry back to Andrew with evidence. It was hard but worth the time spent. I used the DNA to confirm that my theory was probably correct. I am still missing a source for the 1st NY Hampton and the NJ father. However, now that the DNA showed we were probably correct, I can spend time finding that migration record. I think I would advise only using it for confirmation if the money isn't readily available.

I believe there are many sources online regarding the Hamptons in the south and midwest (see if you can link to the famous Col. Wade Hampton from South Carolina).
Pat

Hello Hamptons,
There is a "Hampton" Surname DNA project going on. Ask Karl Hampton (Karl@karlhampton.com). We are both in the Family Tree DNA Hampton project. My Uncle Jerry did the test. We are descended from Andrew Hampton, John's brother in NJ. Andrew's great grandson, John, went to NY, then the family went to Michigan, and then my part went to California.
Patricia Hampton Kinzie
The Ventures has some good information and regretably some misinformation. The author was in some cases a little too zealous in trying to make everyone relate to the Virginia line of Hamptons - as dna has helped to prove. Hopefully more will take the dna tests to help, I took it on familtreedna and ancestry.com and hope more will also, we need it before y dna lines disappear.

A Y-DNA test can only be done by a direct male descendant. It can show that men of a given surname share a common ancestor, but usually only in terms of hundreds of years. Google the Hampton Y-DNA project to see the sort of results you get.

The new Family Finder DNA test, on the other hand, can be done be anyone, male or female. The results consist of a list of matches (cousins) who have ancestors in common with you, along with a prediction of how distantly they are related. These cousins can be in ANY branch of your tree and you have to contact them and attempt to determine who your common ancestor(s) were by comparing pedigrees. The test is said to be very accurate back to the 5th cousin level, after which accuracy slowly declines. Some people have found 12th cousins. I have a couple of matches who share 8th great-grandparents with me.

A Y-DNA tested unexpectedly revealed that our ancestors were Hamptons (Scottish lineage group) although we have a different surname. So I'm waiting for some Hamptons to appear someday in my list of predicted cousins in my Family Finder test results so I can discover what Hampton had an affair with one of my ancestresses! Of course, it could also be a case of one of my ancestors adopting a Hampton child, etc. Family Finder results make it clear that the non-paternity event, whatever it was, did not occur after 1873, but it probably did not occur before 1683 when John Hampton arrived in America.

Carol Anne

I am a Hampton descendant with no Hampton male relative. Just some paperwork & records. But I chose to do the Family Finder Dna test & have already found VA Hampton relatives who have tested. The test is so easy & takes a couple of minutes! YDNA for a male is the 1st best choice, but the other can help as well.

Perhaps an easier way to trace William Hampton would be to forst check the land deed books at the Lumpkin Co. Court House. Looking at the map, it could be his land was actually located in one of the nearby counties: Gilmer, Dawson, White or Union.

My wife is a descendant of Lawson HAMPTON [NOT Lawson W. Hampton], b. abt 1813, married to Elizabeth (Polly) Vance. Their son, Daniel Henry Hampton (1844-1916), was the father of William Laws (W.L.) Hampton (1866-1952), who was my wife's paternal grandmother's father. They were all from Carter County, TN.
I would be interested to know if you or anyone else has further infomation on our Lawson Hampton.

Just read this post. Yeah, I know...I'm a few years late. No, I've not been able to make any connections for Valentine. Valentine was in Washington County, VA before coming to Scott County, VA. His first wife was Frances Campbell who he married in Washington County. There were several Hamptons who would be of the same generation also in Washington County. I'm still trying to find his connection with Frances Hampton who was my gggrandmother. I think she is possibly his sister. I don't think she's the first wife Frances Campbell because the birthdates of her or his children don't work out.

Moses HAMPTON (1803 - 1978 PA)

Hello:

Many trees list Margaret LAIN as the wife of Moses HAMPTON, attorney, congressman, and judge. However, the wife with him in the family mausoleum is Ann MILLER.

I would very much appreciate anyone's information and sourcing for a marriage of this Moses HAMPTON and Margaret LAIN.

To add to the question, Moses HAMPTON and Margaret LANE are at Old First Methodist Church Cemetery in West Long Branch, Monmouth County, NJ:

HAMPTON, Moses 16 Aug 1796 - 1 Dec 1871
HAMPTON, Margaret (Lane) 1 May 1799 - 3 Feb 1897

This is clearly not the same Moses HAMPTON. And, as I've yet to see any sourcing for a marriage of (the congressman) Moses HAMPTON to LAIN (or MILLER, for that matter), I wonder where LAIN came from as his spouse.

Any ideas? Any help much appreciated.

Here's hoping for breakthroughs in the new year!
