Re: Andrew Jackson Handford in North Carolina

There may or may not be a connection, Harry. My great grandfather, Andrew Jackson Hanford, has been elusive but I've found several things since the original post. Andrew Jackson Hanford was born in Connecticut around 1845; he came to the South during the Civil War, and never seemed to leave the area. He spent the rest of his life that I know of in the Halifax, NC area.

One of his wives was Betty Walker, and they had 8 children together. The other was Katy Walker who was much younger than him; I get the impression that she was taking care of him in his old age and when he died. I have yet to find his grave.

As for a third wife mentioned, it may or may not be the one you mention since he was having his children with Betty Walker during that time frame. From what I've heard, he was quite a rounder though.

Another of his great grandchildren (Mark Hanford) lives in Raleigh and is also working on the Hanford genealogy. We have shared pictures and stories, and he might be a good source as well.

Feel free to contact me at carolecreekmore@comcast.com
Thanks, Carole

I am researching the Hanford family in Alamance County, NC. I have hit a brickwall with Andrew Jackson Hanford b. 1853 who disappeared from his home many years ago. I was intrigued by your 2002 post about an Andrew J Handford who lived in eastern NC and who you said was married multiple times. Could your Andrew be the same person who fathered 4 sons in Alamance Co. from 1880 to 1887 and then left his family?

-Harry Shoffner

Hi Kate,
So sorry about the extremely late reply but family tree research has had to go on the back burner for some time.
What information if any do you have on William's younger brother Robert? Can you tell me the name of the family that Hephzibah was staying wuth in 1851? Do you have any info on the house number and street names both William and Robert had in the Portsea area? Is there any reference to Temple on William's Attestation papers for the Dragoon Guards? There are probably other questions and ideas that we can mull over once you have got back to me and suppled me with some of the above information.
Best Wishes Rob

Hi Kate,
It would be great to discover another relative out there that can join in the hunt for James and possibly WIlliams father(if they are related. My e-mail address for more direct contact is rjhandford@hotmail.com!

I have a few queries about your ancestors:

I know that the birth info is poor on the 1841 census and from what you say, William must have passed away by 1851 so the main investigation would centre around how to trace him back to his birth. Who are the people Hephzibah is staying with in 1851 as they might be related to some of the other family members my Handford's married?

Also, in Edinburgh is there any indication of Williams profession?

If he did indeed die between the 1841 and 1851 census there should by a death certificate which might shed some further light on him. There is a hereditary disease in the family although I don't know how far back it goes with the Handford's and if it goes back further than my 3rd Great Grandfather your side may have or have had Nail and Patella Syndrome if there is a connection.

I will study the info some more and in the meantime if you can supply me with some additional bits of info we may be able to help each other out.

Best Wishes
Rob Handford

Hi Rob,

Sorry for the late reply, fell off the genealogy bandwagon for a while.

According to William's service record he was born in 1801 in Portmouth, and I have found a baptism record for a William Hanford in Portsea which is I gather is very close. I don't have the baptism record any more (computer died) and can't remember the parents names, but my William had a younger brother called Robert who also served with the 3rd Dragoon Guards. Let me know if that rings a bell.

I've noticed it isn't a particularly common name; there seem to be a lot in Devon, but very few elsewhere.

Just in case anyone hasn't had a look, there is some useful background information about the Handford surname in the Learning Centre here at Ancestry. If you pop over you will find a map showing the locations holders of the name are found in, as well as some useful occupation data. You can also find the meaning/origin of the name - this alone is fascinating IMO LOL

Here's the link:

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/facts/handford-family-history-uk.a...

Hi Everyone :-)

Just a quick message to let you know that Rootsweb has been moved on to the Ancestry servers. This shouldn't affect the message board, or the way it functions, but the url (address) has changed. The new url for this board is http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.handford/mb.ashx

For the time being the original address should work, but it would be a good idea to update the link if you have bookmarked it, or added it to your website in case that changes.

Have a great weekend, and Happy Easter if you celebrate it!

Kate (moderator)

Hi

I am also researching the Handfords of Kirk Langley. James Handford b: abt 1782 is my GGG Grandfather. I have full evidence of my line back to that point. I also have a Handford tree from the International Geneology Index which traces the Handfords back from 1782 to 1625. I do not have the evidence to back this yet. I went to Kirk Langley today and photographed all Handford headstones. I also intend to go to Derbyshire records office in a couple of weeks and check through all the BMD microfilm records for Kirk Langley. Happy to share any info.
My main interest is through Harry's mother's family called LAMB and they came from Southwell, Notts later moving to Hucknall Torkard. His mother Mary HANDFORD nee LAMB was separated from her husband Thomas by the time Harry was born so as Thomas can't be his father I haven't done much research into the HANDFORD side.
Thomas HANDFORD's parents were William b. 1830 and Hannah HAYWOOD b. 1839 both born Griffydam Leics. Harry had brothers Sidney Percy HANDFORD 1885, Thomas Lamb HANDFORD 1887 and sister Kate Lamb HANDFORD 1891.

Hi Beryl,

I have a William (father), Hephzibah (mother) and Harriet (daughter) Handford all in Nottingham. William and Harriet appear on the 1841 census, Hephzibah and Harriet appear in 1851 - I'm not sure why all three aren't together, but I suspect there may have been some kind of separation. Harriet and Hephzibah move to Birmingham some time in the late 1850s, but I have no idea where William went. It appears he did marry again and have further children, maybe the people you are looking for are connected in some way.

Kate

HANDFORD Nottingham

Hi, I'm trying to find out about the parents of my g-g-g grandmother Harriet HANDFORD/HANFORD. She was born in Edinburgh in about 1829, but the family were living in Nottingham by the 1840s. She married Alfred Thomas WAYNE on 29th April, 1849 at St Pauls, Hysson Green, Nottingham.

Her mother Hephzibah HANDFORD (born Louth, Lincolnshire, 1801) was living with Harriet in 1881, but appears on the 1851 census in Nottingham as a visitor with another family.

I suspect Harriet's father may have been a William HANDFORD born Portsmouth 1801, who served with the 3rd Dragoon Guards, but I'm not certain about this because I am unable to find any reference to their marriage, or even any record of them ever living together. In fact in 1841 he appears to be living in Nottingham, married to an Elizabeth and to have another daughter, Emma aged 3.

If anyone knows anything about this family I would love to hear from them - they really have become a brick wall.

Kate

Re: Handford Ancestors

I am researching the Handford family of Glossop and the surrounding areas -
My great great grandmother was Hannah Handford, born in 1835 or so, who married my gggrandfather Thomas Rowbottom. Hannah was the daughter of Matthew and Sarah (Garside?) Handford, who lived on George St., Glossop, when he died 13 Jan 1873 at the age of 30. I can track him in the census back to 1841, being born about 1803 in Mellor, or Rowarth, or Glossop, depending on which Census data you use. one census referred to him as Mathew Handforth, another transcriber thought they saw Martha instead of Matthew in the 1841 Census.
his children were:
1. John, b. 1830, Derbyshire, m. Harriet Flint, immigrated to Kansas or Missouri
2. Hannah, b. 1835, Mellor, or Glossop, Derbyshire, m. Thomas Rowbottom and immigrated to Kansas in 1884
3. Matthew, b. 1838, Mellor, or Glossop, Derbyshire, immigrated to Kansas
4. Sarah, b. 1843, Mellor, or Glossop, Derbyshire, m. William Flint
5. James, b. 1847, Mellor, or Glossop, Derbyshire, m. Eliza Brine

I am trying to find more English records - having little luck short of what is availaible on Ancestry.com and the normal free sites generally accessible on the web.

I hope to get a response soon?

No problem,
Do you own stock in genesconected or something? If you coldn't help me - why spam me?
I been there - I am still finding help - I will even pay for help - but why would I want to go about searching for my genealogical connections on a website owned by a dating company who's only interest in computers is selling me an insufficent and inadequate membership to a totally useless service to get access to other peoples information o my own family when the internet is already still pretty much free.
Please Mr. Rothwell - don't know who you are - I have seen your other posts for the past few years and a few regarding handfords - Was hoping you was the real deal, guess your not.
I have been doing family history for several decades, and I you are starting to sound like someone who would sell me a page of phone numbers for £7.00.
Be careful you don't spam anybody else in here - I spent about $300 getting this memebership for ancestry.com - I like it because they generally don't allow spamming in the forums.
Hope you find some other Handford family descendant who wants to spend £7.00 a year for access to your materials and alleged assistance, but I am going to have to pass until one of my real relatives recognizes my Handford relatives from their own work, or until I can afford to spending another $300 or so for airfare to England, not counting the more hundreds of dollars I would have to spend while I am taking pictures and writing notes and generally doing genealogy. Have a nice day.

Dear sir -
I think you are ok - I bluster about a bit, sorry about that. I only consider my experiences with genesconnected to not be a too pleasant one and it brought back a sore spot with me - in particular about researching my english families. I registered, I got an account, then browsed, then got hit with the line about joining in order to see everything. and if someone was interested in contacting me, they would have to be a paying member too. I got really frustrated, as you might imagine.

anyways - I feel I should apologize for blustering at you, my girlfriend says I am a grouch, I guess you are just confirming it, I will contact you by email.

Thank you for having a little patience with an old grouch like myself

Hi

I think I may have a link. I have William Handford marrying Mary Ann Easton in St Pancras five years before. Do you think he was a brother?

I am so sorry. My enthuisiasm for the site I mentioned(wont mention it again) ran away with me. I am not and have never sent out spam I genuinly was trying to help as perhaps witnessed by my giving you details of free web sites such as Glossop Heritage etc. My Grandmother was Francis Ann Handforth from Hadfield just a few miles from Glossop and my direct line of Handforths goes back to John: B c1736/7 and his 3 brothers Joseph b;c 1734, Daniel: b c 1732 and James b;c1730. I have trees on most and a tree on Alexander Handforth b; 1545 Married to Jane Chadwicke. I am more than happy to photo copy all my trees and send them to you if you can figure out a way to send me your mail address. How else can I get this info to you? I really do not want to put my email address on this open forum as I am sure you may understand. My sincere apologies if I have upset you which I obviously have. My intentions were to simply try to help a fellow Handforth family researcher. Spam indeed what a load of b........cks!! Figure out a way to let me have your address and I will copy all my Handforth trees and send them to you and no you will not be asked to pay anything. What more can I do to placate you.PS Wish I did have shares in that site we wont mention but sorry to say I dont. Honest.
