Frank Handley - India and possibly Singapore 1942

Trying to trace a Handley connection to my Paynes. This couple, possibly Frank and Mary Ann, originated UK late 1800's. She wrote a book about life in India, think he was involved in forestry, possibly rubber/Dunlop? He may or may not have survived the war, she also may have survived a Japanese attack on their ship in 1942, ss Kuala, I found a Mrs M M Handley on the passenger list. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Hi I too have a Handley connection in Wolverhampton, my maternal grandmother and uncles and aunties who I have never met due to adoption in the family. I have made a family tree all may not be accurate but from what I know I've put it together. It would be great to hear from someone who may have knew them. Many thanks Gail Rielly

My Handleys also came from Salford. I have a James Handley married to Elizabeth Hancock. I am descended from their son William b. 1879. Brothers George and William arrived in USA in 1893 in Boston. James Sr also arrived in 1893 but I don't know if he arrived on the same ship as his son, if so, they were not listed together in the passenger list. His wife and younger children arrived in 1894. James Jr and his wife arrived in 1895.

Our familes most likely connect at some point. Maybe your William and my James were brothers or cousins.

James and Elizabeth Hancock had the following children:
James Handley (Born: 1871)
Elizabeth A Handley (Born: 1873)
George H Handley (Born: 1876)
William Handley (Born: 1879)
Albert Handley (Born: 1880)
Frank/Francis Handley (Born: 1882)
Francis Handley (Born: 1883)
John Handley (Born: 1885)
Sarah Handley (Born: 1887)
Rose Handley (Born: 1889)
Edith Handley (Born: 1890)

Kim

Hi, I traced my Handley's back to Salford, England, about 1845 but from there it has become a bit fuzzy because there are so many Handleys there all with the same names (William, James, George). Is anyone else searching the Handleys from Salford? Thanks!

I have been searching for my husbands families ancestors and have came up with a blank until i came upon your post. Now i may have some hope. My husband is John
gedison, his dad was Gustave. Not much is know about him as he was a difficult person to live with i guess. He was born Butte montana, ran away from home at a very young age, lived in lamont alberta and in Bradwell saskatchewan. Lived and had a family in Meadow Lake, and died anwas buried there. I'm interested in learning more about his family. I have a few clues to his life through his second wife (Johns mom. If you are still on the ancestry .com i would love to here from you.

Found in the Union Parish, LA deed records where
Seaborn J. Handley and wife Elizabeth Stubblefield
Handley sold land to Samuel W. Hearn. Deed dated
10 Nov. 1845.
1850 census Union Parish, LA, I also found Bud L. Handley living with Elizabeth Handley, age 74, bn NC. From above
information, probably S. J. and Elizabeh Handley were
parents.

Also found a deed dated dec 1840 for the sale of one
slave named Jack. The writing is not clear but listed
is M. T. Handley and wife Sophia McNut Handley.
Sold to or bought S. J. Handley (assume this is Seaborn J.
from previous deed).
On 1850 Union Parish, LA Census Sophiah Handley is listed
head of household, Isaac McNut, Nicholus McNut, Lucretra
McNut(female) Sarah McNut (female) Leonard Handley, age 7
James Handley, age 5 and Henry Handley, age 3. The Handley
children with born in both LA and MS.
Hope this helps someone. Have not been able to connect
with my Handley line.
SJohnson
What a wonderful surprise to get up to today! I have been trying to find my father's brother's family for nearly 20 years. I have often been a few steps behind. There have been so many coincidences along the way. My uncle William married a girl who was living round the corner from where I moved to in Wolverhampton. They married in the local church there. They moved to Solihull which is where I live now. William snr was cremated in the local crematorium which is across the road from where my son may be moving to live. Both William Anthony and his sister Joyce married in Solihull. I have only found all this out in the last few months. I have been made redundant so have had the time to make a more intensive search.I will also email you Kathy. What a success story, thanks to you and ancestry.com.
Regards Barbara

Hello Kathy

Can you tell her, her husband's father William Handley snr was my father's (John Handley)brother? They grew up together in Dunstall Avenue, Wolverhampton, England with their father John who had originally come from Shropshire, England. I now live in Solihull, England which is the town where she married. I would love to know if she had children and if so how I could contact them.I would also like her address to write to her. I will pass my address on directly to your email address. Fingers crossed it is the correct Joyce Handley. If so please pass on my email address of eva.handley@btinternet.com. Eva was my mother.

Thank you so much. I googled and found this entry for obituaries in Connox Valley.
"HANDLEY; William; 27 Sep 2004; Courtenay; not given; Joyce Handley; Comox
Valley Record;
6 Oct 2004; B21; Formerly of Edmonton, family named." Not sure what this line means.
Anyone know how I can confirm this is my cousin and if so what happened to Joyce and whether there were any children?

My father's family came from the Ludlow area. My great grandfather was John Handley as was his son (my grandfather) and his son (my father). John, the eldest, was born in Coreley, Salop and died of heart disease in 10 Lower St, Ludlow on 25th May 1913, aged 73. He was married to Emma Morris and they had children, Edwin, John, Elizabeth, James, Ellen, William, Alice, Herbert, Jane, Mary Ann, and Agnes Annie. I am wondering if anyone knows of a connection to this family. My grandfather, John born 1868 in Burford moved to Wolverhampton, Staffordshire presumably to find work. He died in 1951 in Wolverhampton where my father, John lived all his life until he died in 1992. Unfortunately I do not know of any surviving Handleys other than myself, Barbara Handley, so would love to know the family has carried on somewhere.
I have finally traced my cousin (our fathers were brothers) to an address in Canada in 2002. I understand he was in Cortenay, Canada.I want to find out if he is still alive and whether he and his wife Violet had any children. They were originally from Cornwall, England. William was born in 1925 and Violet in 1919. The Handleys were originally from Shropshire, and my branch was from Wolverhampton, Staffordshire after my paternal grandfather moved there from the Ludlow, Salop area. Any advice as to how to access any pertinent records please?
Barbara Handley

I am looking for information on Esther Handley, born 1800 in Kirkbymoorside, Yorkshire. She married my ggg grandfather Joseph Roantree/Rowntree
in 1828 and lived in Etton for a while but in 1851 census was back in Kirkbymoorside down as a miller's wife. I have her father down as William Handley but cannot find him in the census. Does anyone have information on this family. One of her children is down as William Hay Roantree so assume he is of descent of other Hay Handleys posted on the board.
Thanks for any information on this line.

Lynne

Hi,

I am researching my family tree and have established that Major Leonard Mourant Hay Handley was the younger brother of Lucy Mildred O'Malley nee Hay who was married to my great uncle; Capt Victor David O'Malley.

I have learnt that Victor O'Malley died in a clinic in Switzerland in 1933. His widow sadly died only 7 years after him. Although I am aware they had a daughter, Patricia in 1923, I have yet to trace her.

I would be grateful for any information you may have concerning Lucy Mildred Hay or my great uncle.

Kind Reagrds

John Ball

Thanks Tom. I went to the Anderson Co. library today and found the book Honea Path Milestones the first addition and the last. Both were helpful. The first addition had a picture of Gabe Datcher whom you mention was a great oral historian. He had some great stories. I took nots of the names mentioned. I think I may go down to Honea Path and take a look at the graves.
My Grees seem to have been owned by the Brazeals at some point but they must have kept the surname name Greer. Now I have to find who they got if from.
Good to hear from you again Andrew; I hope your family research is going well. I am familiar with the family name Brazeale (and/or similar spellings) in the Belton and Honea Path area. In fact there are some streets and roads bearing that family name. I think there was a teacher at the old Belton High School with that surname (that was before Belton, Honea Path, and Geer-Gant High Schools consolidated to form the present Belton-Honea Path HS in 1966). I will look into the few resources I have to see if I can find any Greer - Brazeale connections, and will let you know what, if anything, I come across. I am relatively certain that Brazeale was a prominent family name in this area at some point in time. Hope I can find something for you - check back soon! Tom :)

I had ment to ask you. Do you know if your line of Greers were associated with the Brazeal families in the Belton, Anderson area? From what I gather the Brazeals owned alot of land that they sold to many surounding neighbors.
One in particular name Matthew Brazeal born 1814 lived close to both of our Greers.

Wow! You are many miles ahead of me in your research on the Greer's of Honea Path! If there were 2 Nimrod Greer's, then that is something I did not know about before! Thanks for sharing all of that and much good luck to you in your continuing quest. I remember paying about $25 for the book "Honea Path Milestones" back in '92. I recall seeing a reference to the book on the town's website in the recent past, and if memory serves me correctly, they were offering copies for about the same price, plus postage. Although it is a "popular" history, not a scholarly work, it's well worth the price. Thanks again and stay in touch! Tom

Great to hear from you, I realize it can take literaly years to get a response. I will have to search for this book of Honea Path Milestones, especially this fellow named Gabe. I located the will of David Greer and majority of his children are mention as well as a few slaves who aren't listed with surnames. David apon his death gave his son John M Greer along with 146 acers of land three black slaves by the names of Billy, Lenn, and Doshey. David also gave his daughter Eliza Lee a black girl named Ann. Nimrod J Greer was given land, which I guestimated he gave to his son Nimrode Andrew Jackson Greer. Im on the quest to find the will of the other sons and maybe David's wife Polly. Perhaps my slaves names show up somewhere in there. Even today my grandfateher owns land that he got from his grandfather Enoch Greer whom I found living in the same area as Nimrod Jr. Greer. Back to the drawing board.
Hi Andrew! Thanks so much for your inquiry. Nimrod Andrew Jackson Greer, my gg-grandfather seems to have been an interesting character indeed! He was a son of David Greer, Sr., by David's 3rd wife. I have no knowledge if any of the Greer's in my lineage ever were slave owners. They lived in Honea Path in upstate SC, which was considered the backcountry of the state during it's early history. Most slave owners were in the lowcountry of SC, which had been settled by very wealthy English planters, beginning at Charleston and Georgetown. However, a book about Honea Path, known as Honea Path Milestones was published in 1976, and a 2nd version in 1992. That book contains one or more articles about an African-American named Gabe Datcher who was well acquainted with the Honea Path Greer's, including Nimrod and, if memory serves me correctly, with Nimrod's father David Greer, Sr. Gabe (I assume short for Gabriel) seems to have been an historian (perhaps of the oral tradition) concerning the very early years of Honea Path's existence! I think copies of the 1992 book still may be purchased via the Town of Honea Path's website. I also know of some African-American Greer's who lived at Belton, just 8 miles up US Hwy 76 from Honea Path. It is possible some of them may still reside there, or perhaps in both towns. Obviously David, Sr. accumulated some wealth during his lifetime, and probably some of his sons and daughters did as well. I wasn't blessed to share in any of that wealth however! Another "set" of Greer's settled the town that became known as Greer, SC (in the Greenville Spartanburg metro area). The founder of that settlement was named Manning Greer. I have yet to establish a proven connection between David, Nimrod, or any others in their line, with Manning Greer. However, Manning's descendants did establish the well-known Texize Company many years ago, and some served in state government. Some of Manning Greer's line also are known to have lived at Honea Path in more recent years. I wish I were able to offer you more certain information about your family at this time. I always am attentive to any new discoveries, and will be pleased to share any such information in this forum or other forums.
May you be blessed in your continuing research! Thanks so much for posting your inquiry and sharing your discoveries!
Tom L. Hanley, Anderson, SC, USA

Virginia.
The John HANDLEY sr., great grandfather of B F HANDLEY died in 1816 and is buried in McLean County, Ky. This one was a surveyor and at one time owned or controlled over 40,000 acres in the Jackson Purchase.
William Handley - Nancy Matthias

Recently I found the death certificate of my great-grandfather's sister: Margaret M. Handley.

According to that dc, Margaret had been born in 1825 in Greenbriar County, Virgina (now West Virginia). Her parents were, according to the dc, William Handley and ________ Matthias.

And, according to the dc, Margaret's middle intial {M.) also was in place of her full middle name of Matthias.

According to the 1830 census record in Fountain County, Indiana, this William Handley would have fit into the 50-60 age range, which would have had him born between 1770 and 1780.

From later records, land, probate (william died in 1833) and census, William's widow at the time of his death was Nancy. Nothing in those records indicate her maiden name. Margaret's dc is the first clue that we later researchers have had to help us in that regard.

It's not hard to find gedcoms which line our William Handley to one of John and Grizelda's grandchildren, however, most of those seem to do so on the authority of Randall J. Handly's book, and he really didn't provide any background citations for lining William up that way.

So, my question now becomes, with "Mathias/Matthias" now seemingly in the mix, does the identity of my William and Nancy (likely nee Mathias/Matthias) come into any more clear resolution for any of you Handley researchers?

Here's hoping. We've long (again, likely because of Randall's book) figured that William likely came from Greenbriar, but this is the first documentation of any sort which seems to confirm even that detail.

Thanks!

Joe Hittle
www.hittle.info

I am very sorry if I offended you. I was just trying to share information I had found about him.

I would like to know which Handley line Benjamin F did descend from if not from the major line of Handleys in America so I can correct my records.

The brothers William and John Handley immigrated to America ca 1740 with their wives and children. They began to pay off their indentures in New Castle DE/PA and then Augusta Co VA (probably working as as weavers). Their indentures were assigned in turn to Samuel Corry, Rev Charles Tennett, Robert Boggs, Thomas Armor and Thomas Thompson. Many of their family members settled in what became Greenbrier and Monroe Co, WV.

To, SummitSandy,
Your statement which claims to tell me which line of HANDLEYs are my ancestors is outrageous...neither of the two lines you speak of is mine and furthermore you have erred. Benjamin F HANDLEY was a brother to my Elizabeth Handley AMOS who is buried in the Amos cemetery in northern Dade County. BTW, one of Elizabeth's daughters married an ACOCK.
Ben & his family returned to Kentucky, while Elizabeth and husband Wm. H AMOS remained in Dade.

John Handley (1768-1821) of NC

I'm looking for information regarding the parents of John Handley (1768-1821) of Dobbs or Wayne County, North Carolina. John was married to Martha Applewhite. Some trees list John's parents as Celiah Boykin and John Handley, Jr. Some trees list John's parents as James Handley and Molly Cato (Cater). I cannot find any definitive information on which set of parents belong to my John Handley. I think I have figured out that John Handley, Sr. and James Handley are brothers, and their parents are Mark Handley and Elizabeth Dicey. Any information is greatly appreciated!
