I'm afraid I sent you all the info I currently have. I will talk to my aunt about these names. She is 87 and is very sharp. She loves to talk about the summers she spent in Indiana as a child. I will see her at the end of this month and let you know what she remembers. George Marion is not in my direct line, but is probably a cousin of my grandfather Oscar. His father's name may have been William Hankins. Just a guess.
Sharon

I feel strongly that your George is a grandson of my ancestor Gilbert Hankins or a grandson of his brother William. I have, I believe, all of their children's names, but not spouses or children so I can't be of more help. Both George and Marion are common names in my line.
Gilbert Hankins b. 11 Oct 1818 Shelbyville, KY d.24 Nov 1911 Carbon Co, IN
William Hankins b. 1827 Shelbyville, KY
Hope this helps.

I am researching Hankins lineage. I am a Hankins and my family and I are stuck at William Albert Hankins. We don't have any further information other than he was married twice once to Catherine Shelton and another to Emily Green. The only thing I can remember is that when we were young, someone had contacted my dad and his siblings about some land in Oklahoma, something about native american... If anyone could help us find any further information, it would be greatly appreciated. Bobbie S. Wigginton(Hankins)

I am trying to do some research on this gentleman for a distant family member. His son was Philip Beverage HANKINS b. August 13, 1916. From what I have been told 'Marion' died when Philip was only either 3 weeks old or 3 months old. 'Marion' married Nora 'Agnes' Griffith on June 11, 1911 in Marion Co., Indiana. Agnes died when Philip was about 3 years old and I found him (Philip) living with his paternal grandparents (George W. Griffith and Hattie Edwards-Griffith)on the 1920 census.
does anyone have any info on this Hankins family?
thanks

Whatever available Rhea County estate records, circa 1864, that I've found, they do not indicate heirs of this particular James L. Hankins (b abt 1790 in VA).

In the 1860 Rhea County census, he is in the same district as James H. Hankins, b abt 1820 in TN, who is with his wife Caroline and children. This appears to be the same James H. Hankins who shows up on the same page as the same James L. Hankins in the 1850 Roane County census--a fact suggesting that this James H. is the son of this James L. There is also a Joseph Hankins, b abt 1815 with wife Cassandra, on the same 1850 census page--the proximity of which may, again, suggest a father-son relationship.

For what it's worth, there are many submitted family trees of purported descendants of James L. Hankins (b abt 1790 in VA), and some primary sources support these relationships. At least some of these descendants appear to have migrated to Arkansas.

What I'd really like to know, however, is specific information about this James L. Hankins (as he is identified in these posts)--namely, his participation in the Roane County community and his reputation, to the extent that these can ever be known. It may be that this information can only be inferred from Roane County records (which may require a trip to the Kingston courthouse); but if somebody else out there has done the work already, I'd love to hear about it.

There are two basic options here. In our HANKINS YDNA project, we have identified TWO separate HANKINS lines, with both branching into Roane County, TN. in the late 1700's to early 1800's time frame.
One came from farther east in TN. around Jefferson/Grainger Counties and before that from Frederick County in northern Virginia.
The other HANKINS patrilineal line came from southern VA. around current day Henry/Pittsylvania/Franklin Counties.
We know more to date about the former line. And so far we have not identified descendants from the latter line remaining in the Roane County area.
But we need more male HANKINS YDNA info to better answer that question.

J. Hankins
bullmtn.jhh@gmail.com

James L. Hankins, Roane County, TN, circa 1850: Who is this guy?

Interested in any information on James L(emuel?) Hankins, an adult, who lived in Roane Co, TN, circa 1850. Census records for that year provide only 1 adult James Hankins in Roane Co: 62 years of age (b abt 1788 in VA), living with presumed daughter Dasa or Desa, 22, and presumed son John, 19. James is also on the slave schedule, owning a 40-year-old woman and a 17-year-old male.

TN marriage records for the era provide 3 entries for a James Hankin or Hankins: 1811 (Patsey Reyburn); 1820 (Rebecca Fulton); and 1850 (Sally Martin).

Many, many online public trees have entries for a James Lemuel Hankins who married Martha (presumably Patsey) Rayburn, and these repeated (cut-and-pasted) records indicate that James Lemuel Hankins died in either Roane or McMinn County in 1850. However, this is evidently not so, because of compelling information in Roane County loose papers (James L. Hankins acted as a guardian for the "orphaned" children of Sarah/Sally Martin, from August 1850 to July 1852 [at which time he resigned his guardianship]) and the fact that there's an excellent-fit 1860 census entry for a James L. Hankins in adjacent Rhea Co. (And this James L. Hankins is also on the slave schedule, owning a 51-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man.)

Estate records in Rhea indicate that this James L. Hankins, 69--who was presumably widowed and living with 40-year-old Mary (his legal or common-law wife?) and 2-year-old Rhoda--died circa 1864. These records also indicate that he left behind an unnamed widow, and that his estate was wiped out due to the "casualties of war."

Mary and Rhoda Hankins, along with several other Hankins children, show up in the 1870 Knox Co. census.

My suspicion, after this long-winded presentation, is that 1) this James L. Hankins married Martha/Patsey Rayburn in 1811 (by which he had several children); 2) Martha/Patsey died before the 1850 census; 3) James was appointed guardian to Sarah/Sally Martin's children in August 1850; 4) James and Sarah/Sally married in Roane County on Dec. 10, 1850; 5) things somehow went bad with this marriage or guardianship or both; 6) James resigned his guardianship of the Martin children in 1852 and left the marriage (whether by divorce or not, I don't know); 7) James moved to Rhea Co. sometime before 1860 and shacked up with (or married) Mary (although I can find no marriage record for this union); and 8) Sarah Martin moved with her children to Meigs Co. circa the mid-1850s.

Forgot to add: There is only one Sarah/Sally Martin of marriageable age in the 1850 Roane County census,* and this is the same woman with the orphaned children to whom James L. Hankins was guardian.

* I don't count 13 as a marriageable age.

Looking for anyone who knows of Louis Hankins who died in WWI and is buried in Fort Gibson Cemetery, Oklahoma.

We believe he is the same Louis Hankins who was living in Kern County, California at the time of his enlistment.

The Kern County Veterans' Association is completing a memorial to KC men and women who died in war. The memorial will list a 'hometown' for each of the names, but we do not have a hometown for Louis Hankins. Many men came to California just prior to the war to work in the oilfields or in agriculture. We would like to know in which town Louis was living when he enlisted. If he was here only temporarily, we would like to know his hometown in Oklahoma.

Thank you for any assistance in the matter.

Sharon,

I to think I am a descended or Thomas Hankins and Mary Clevenger. Although I have just begun my search I an looking for a way to confirm this. In my research it looks like my line branches off to a Richard Hankins b. 1610 d. 1692, looks like he arrived in Virginia in 1652. He married Marilyn Ewing and had a son named William Hankins who married Elizabeth Jane Sharpe and had a son named Daniel who married Hannah Cliff, son named Joseph who married Sarah Jane, had a son named George Washington Hankins who married Elender Price, They had a son named George Washington Hankins he married Rohda James. then their son Richard Hankins wife Shara Brawner was my Great Great Grandfather. I hope I didnt confuse you too much but if any of this make scince please get back to me. I know for sure that Richard & Sarah were my GG grandparents and that George washington & Rhoda were GGG grandparents these are in a family bible. the others I tried to conect as best as I could any confurmation would be great. you can reach me at hankins_electric@sbcglobal.net

Thanks Don Hankins
