Hanlon family of Philadelphia/Delaware County, PA

I'm looking for more information on William Hanlon (b. 1881 in Pennsylvania) and his wife Margaret Hanlon (b. 1885 in Scotland). According to the census records for 1910-1930, they had the following children: Grace (b. 1907), Winifred (b. 1909), William (b. 1910), Veronica (b. 1912), and Thomas (b. 1914). They lived in Philadelphia in 1910 and 1920, but lived in Upper Darby in 1930. It appears Margaret Hanlon died between 1920 and 1930.

Specifically, I'm interested in Margaret Hanlon. I believe she may be Margaret McBride, the sister of my great-great grandfather Daniel McBride. Like Margaret McBride, Margaret Hanlon was born in Scotland in 1885 to Irish parents. Furthermore, they both immigrated in 1892/1893. The McBride family first lived in Philadelphia before moving to Camden, New Jersey around 1895/1896. Margaret McBride is living with her widowed mother and siblings in Camden in the 1900 census.

Hanlon/O'Hanlon - Dublin & Co. Kildare Ireland & possibly NY

I am looking for information on the Hanlon family of Dublin, sometimes known as OHanlon. They may also have had roots/connections in County Kildare. Their history seems to be very intertwined with my own family, the Stonehams.

My great-great-grandfather John J Stoneham married Mary C O'Hanlon in abt 1903. His sister Margaret was married to Michael Hanlon back in 1885. According to my aunt, Mary C was Michael's neice. Mary's parents, according to a cousin, were William and Catherine McCall. I have found a marriage record for William Hanlon and Catherine McCaul in Dublin in 1863. William's parents are listed as Michael and Mary. The Michael O'Hanlon who married Margaret Stoneham listed his father's name as Michael on his marriage record, but his mother's info is not recorded. It seems likely that William and Michael were brothers.

Besides the marriage ties, the Stonehams and Hanlons often were sponsors for each other's children's baptisms and witnesses at each other's weddings.

I also found a record that is from a generation earlier of a birth of Alexander Peter Hanlon of 28 Fisher's Lane who was born to a Thomas Hanlon and a mother whose first name wasn't included but whose last name was Stoneham. Although I do not know who this Stoneham was or how she was connected I feel like there was probably a connection. According to Griffith's Valuation my great-great-grandfather's father Lawrence J Stoneham lived on Fisher's Lane, so I suspect that one of his sisters married a Hanlon (whether part of the same family of Hanlons I do not know).

Michael Hanlon and Margaret Stoneham's children were: Christoper Michael (b. 1885), Mary Margaret (b. 1887) and Peter Laurence (b. 1888). I would be interested in any info on them. There is also a connection to the Shercliffe family. On the 1911 census they have Lily Scherfliffe in their household, listed as a niece. I found a baptismal record for a Thomas Joseph Shercliffe, born in 1891 to William Shercliffe and his wife Catherine (O'Hanlon). Mary Stoneham was godmother. She was also Maid of Honor at the wedding of William and Catherine in 1890.

I recently got in touch with a cousin descended from my great-grandfather's brother and she found some old names in her mother's address book. Included were Leana and Seamus O'Hanlon of Upper Grandview, 450 So Broadway, NY 10960. I think that zip code is for Nyack.

Other Hanlon/O'Hanlons that I believe to be related/connected are (I'm jut going to call them all Hanlon for simplicity - the names switch back and forth on documents, even for the same person):

Possible siblings for William Hanlon (possibly born around 1841 - who married Catherine McCall/McCaul) are Michael Hanlon (b. about 1859 to 1862 - who married Margaret Stoneham), Patrick Hanlon (I haven't found anything about him yet, but he was best man at William's wedding), Catherine Hanlon (who married William Sherlciffe/Sheerclief - her parents are listed on her wedding document as Michael O'Hanlon and Mary Smith), James Hanlon (I don't know anything about him yet other than that he was best man at Catherine and William Shercliffe's wedding), and Peter Hanlon (he listed his parents as Michael and Mary at his 1858 wedding to Ann Brien and a Peter Hanlon was godfather to William and Catherine's son Thomas). I will be doing further research on these people to see if I can confirm anything, but if you have any news I would appreciate the help!

Probably siblings for Mary C O'Hanlon (daughter of William and Catherine McCall/McCaul)are Thomas Hanlon b. 22 March 1866, William b. 5 September 1868 and Michael b. 17 November 1873.
Hi, Unfortunately, my research so far has hit a wall with William and Kate Hanlon. The only child I know of is John,(my great great grandfather.) who married Mary Kille, Kills, or Kelle in Natick MA, 11 Nov 1868. I am trying to decipher the writing on the marriage record I found. At the time of their marriage John is listed as age 32 and born in Ireland. Mary is listed as age 22 and born in Massachusetts. They were living in Sudbury but were married in Natick.

Re: Robert H. Hanlon

The Robert H. Hanlon in the 1900-1910 census of Chicago was born in Tennessee on 4 June 1855. He died on 02 December 1925 in Bremen, Cook County, Illinois. The death record (on-line at FamilySearch) lists Robert’s father as “James Hanlon” and gives Robert’s birthplace as Nashville, Tennessee.

He seems to be the same as “Robert H. Hanlin,” who was born in Tennessee on 4 June 1855, the son of James H. Hanlin and Mary A. E. Brown.

James H. Hanlin and Mary A. E. Brown had four known children:

Anna Crawford Hanlin, b. 7 September 1848
Mary B. Hanlin, b. 14 September 1850
George William Hanlin, b. 18 October 1852
Robert H. Hanlin, b. 4 June 1855

Robert Hanlin appears in the 1860 census of Williamson County, Tennessee (Franklin Post Office). The head of household is his grandmother, Mary Brown (b. in Virginia abt. 1800). Robert’s mother Mary A. E. (Brown) Hanlin (b. 1822) is also in this household. Robert’s father, James H. Hanlin, is missing and would later enlist (near Chicago) in the 12th Illinois Cavalry.

Robert’s father James H. Hanlin returned to Tennessee after the Civil War, and Robert and his father moved to Nashville, Tennessee around 1868. (This is recorded in a letter from Robert’s sister Anna Hanlin to their brother George in 1872.) A Nashville city directory for 1869 records that J. H. Hanlin and Robert Hanlin are both working for “A Moore & Son.” J. H. Hanlin is living on Spruce Street.

The 1869 Nashville City directory shows a James H. Hanlin “wagon maker” on Spruce Street (this was James’ life-long occupation); but Robert is no longer listed. I have not been able to locate Robert in the census of 1870.

In 1879, Robert Hanlin’s grandmother Mary (Bendal?) Brown (widow of William Brown of Sussex County, Virginia) died in Franklin, Tennessee, leaving a small estate. Robert is mentioned in the probate records, but his siblings did not know how to find him. He is listed as “Robert H. Hanlin, Texas, but post office not known.”

Robert Hanlin is also mentioned in a genealogy of the Hanlin family that was researched in the 1920’s by Fred Hanlin and distributed in the 1950’s by J. Paul Hanlin (“A Hanlin Family Tree”, unpublished typescript). The document gives Robert’s name, parents, and birth date (4 June 1855, same as on the death certificate for “Robert H. Hanlon” of Cook County, Illinois). Then, the “Hanlin Family Tree” says of Robert, “not heard of since 1889.” This, interestingly, is the year when “Robert H. Hanlon” married Ella Sullivan in Chicago.

I would love to hear from anyone who knows anything about this family, and especially from anyone descended from Robert H. Hanlon of Chicago. Did Robert Hanlon and Ella Sullivan have any children other than James Joseph Hanlon (b. 1895, m. Ruth Virginia Worman)? What about Robert’s grandchildren?

Please let me hear from you!

Thanks,

Chris Hanlin
Cincinnati, Ohio

Hi Colin,

I have your Hanlons in my tree. My great great grandmother was Elizabeth Hanlon from Murroe, Dunfanaghy, James, Catherine and MaryAnn were her siblings, also Jane. Their parents were James Hanlon and Sarah McKinley. I have info on all the children except Mary Ann although I do have James Galbraith as her husband and a note that she died before 1872 in Dunfanaghy. My email is sjmcmailbox@gmail.com if you'd like to get in touch.

Hi im pretty new to ancestry still, so far just doing the free research, cant afford subscription just yet.
I am trying to find more information on my Ggrandfather Harry St. Clair Hanlon, I had found a WW1 registration card showing Harry St. Clair Hanlon born March 26, 1876, was an engineer for the OSL Railroad, address in 1918 was 1140 N. Garfield Pocatello, ID, married to Mina Hanlon (Gilson) (my Ggrandmother), was 42 years old when he filled it out and was signed September 10, 1918....Trying to find anything out on him, his parents, did he have siblings?, etc. I have had a real hard time trying to find info on his parents, only found a census that shows they were both born in New York. I would appreciate any help. Thanks you!
Kaylene

So far in all my research of the Joy family, I have found no connection between John William Joy of Washington County, Oh and my Mathew Joy of Monroe County, Oh. So therefore the 2 Joy girls that married the O'Hanlon boys are not related to me. I have kept all the info I have ever received in case it all ties in somewhere down the road.
I use this site quite a bit. I usually type in the last name and in location the county I want, i.e. Washington County, Oh. Wait for the green box to come up, click on it.
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=home
Aha! My husband is also a great-grandson of Felix Hanlon and Nancy Jones. His grandfather was Norman Hanlon. We have been to Patrick's grave both before and after the Rev. War grave stone was put there.

All those Hanlons and Joys are my husband's family and they are all related. Do you still need to know the connections?

Two Hanlon brothers, Rufus and Richard, married two Joy sisters, Mary Anne and Sarah. Rufus died in a Civil War prison camp in Tyler, TX. The others relocated to Nebraska following the Civil War.

My mother-in-law's mother was Bessie May Joy and my father-in-law was Harold Clinton Hanlon. If this is your family, you are probably related to my husband twice -- as so many of the early settlers in that area are.

I am searching for information on my g-g-g-grandfather William Hanlon, who was born in Newfoundland around 1819 and moved to PEI where he married Bridget Murphy. I believe he originated somewhere around St-John's. If anyone has any information concerning him or his parents, it'd be much appreciated.

Hello and thanks for your reply - we are just back from a week away.
I would guess that you are Christopher Hanlon son of Sarsfied and Joyce. I was in contact with your sister Elaine in 2008.
Joyce was my fathers cousin (Richard) he was the son of George Spratt brother of Tom your Grandfather.
I don't know how interested you are in the Spratt family but I have traced it quite a way back. My main tree is not on Ancestry but if you were ever interested I would be happy to fill in any gaps for you.
Best wishes
Sue

Sarsfield lived in Ottawa, Canada -- with Joyce (Spratt)-- both are deceased -- had 4 children - all residing in Canada -- no child named Eric (to my knowledge) - Joyce's sister Dorthy also married during/after WWII - she moved to Erie PA - 2 children - she is deceased. Her children live in US.
Chris Hanlon

Hi Iva,
Thanks for the message. I did get his obit etc, but appreciate the offer. I would be glad for the other contact. One never knows what info is out there. Also, being as he died in 1920, there may be a photo of him someplace. It is always great to put a face to a name. I can be reached at ted81pa@ptd.net
Thanks again
Ted
81st PVI

Anyway, I have Edward's obituary if you are interested in it and I also have correspondence from another Hanlon researcher, if you would like to read that. Just let me know and I'll E-mail it to you.
Iva
