Hello
My sister-in-law has studied our family history since 1985 and the results of her labours have been extensive. That's how I know that my Great Great Grandmother Martha Groom (born 1799), nee Hannant was married to my Great Great Grandfather John Groom. Their daughter Mary Ann married William Johnson and their son Frederick Groom Johnson was my Father's Father. Martha Hannant's parents were John Hannant born 1775 and Judith Smith born 1780. They had a son (Martha's brother) John Hannant born 1814, Ormesby St. Michael, Norfolk, died 17 Mar 1861 Perry, Illinois who married Mary Ward (born 3 Jul 1814 in Runham, Norfolk - died 20 Dec 1883 Perry, Pike County, Illinois) on 27 Jan 1834 in Runham. They had 6 children Martha, John A., Rebecca, William Henry, Frederick Nichols, Eliza Mary. From their birthplaces we have worked out that the family moved to the US between 1846 and 1851. John A. married Eliza Mathilda Madden and they had 5 children Mary Lincoln, Winfield Scott, Nettie Belle, Carrie May and William Henry all born in the USA.
Hope this ties in.
Kathryn E. Phillips (nee Johnson)

Was so interested to see information re Thomas Martin as I think I have some photos of him which were obviously sent back to the family in England from Australia. I am the granddaughter of Thomas's older brother Frederick, and would be really interested to know whether there is any information in Thomas's memoirs re the death of Herbert and as to whether there was some rift between his parents Grace and Richard.
Thank you!

Thanks so much. I recently recovered a long letter written by Thomas Martin Hannant that detailed his travels from the time of his maritime "apprenticeship" at the age of 13 years 10 months to his final employment on the wharfs in Sydney in 1930. The letter was addressed to his only son, Robert Albert, and is such a fascinating record that I think it is worth publishing. I am working on an introduction to it, with as much confirmation of its record as I am able to gather.I will certainly let you know when it is completed, though it will not really be a family tree. That would be too hard, if only because one of Robert's sons, currently living in Queensland, has produced a family of twelve (12) children! No chance of the Australian branch dying out after that effort!
Cheers and again thanks for that clarification. John

The Herbert Hannant mentioned is my gt uncle. The Herbert Hannant bn in 1873 in your tree died in Whitechapel Distrcit in 1910. I'd be interested in the details you have for Thomas Martin's emmigration to Australia as he is currently "branchless" on my tree.

Always happy to swap information.

I am a great-grandson of Richard through another of his sons,Thomas Martin, who migrated to Australia. If any of the information I have gathered on this Hannant line in Great Yarmouth is of interest I am happy to share it with you.
Best wishes, and many thanks for your postings,John.

Obituary of Tamer Arvilla Hannant

Obituary of Tamer Arvilla Lawrence taken from the Nevada Mail and The Evening Post, Saturday March 16, 1929 at Nevada, Missouri:

Tamer Arvilla Hannant was born at St. Johnsbury, Vt., Aug. 29, 1855, a member of one of America's foremost families, she being a direct descendant of Benjamin Franklin.
Her maternal grandfather went to California during the gold rush of 1849, going by way of the Isthmus of Panama, and being carried across that strip of country on the backs of natives.
He returned a wealthy man, and accompanied by her parents and the babe, T. Arvilla, moved to Clayton county, Iowa. There, this same grandfather, a millright, during the succeeding years, erected many all wooden mills along various rivers in Iowa, some of which are still in use today.
She grew to young womanhood near Waterloo, Iowa, and her family then pushed west along the trail that Herbert Quick mentions in the books "Hawkeye" and "Vandermark's Folly", and many of their experiences were practically the same as those there recorded. They settled near Sioux City on the Nebraska side of the river.
Here she met a young New Yorker, John Noble Lawrence, and was united in marriage to him Sept. 14, 1873.
They homesteaded in Nebraska and many were the thrilling pioneer experiences which befell them. For instance, at one time when her husband was deputy sheriff, a man drove some Indian ponies from the Custer Massacre into Yankton, S.D., and sold them. Mr. Lawrence bought two. While there, the man bragged that he had killed "Wild Bill" Hickock. The enraged citizens immediately strung him up.
Among such thrilling experiences her pioneer days were passed, and she weathered Indian scares, floods, grasshopper plagues and she was always equal to any emergency, facing every situation as it arose with her characteristic poise, and unswerving faith in God to see her through.
In 1888 she accompanied her family to California, where her husband helped lay out Carona, and put down many artesian wells. They returned to southern Iowa, and then came to Missouri in March, 1903, settling in Nevada, where they passed their declining years. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Sept. 14, 1923.
Mr. Lawrence died in October, 1924, and two sons, William Peter and Joseph Harrison, died in infancy.
Surviving her are her three sons, Edward V. Lawrence of Dumont, N.J., John Franklin Lawrence of Chicago, Ill., and Robert K. Lawrence of Girard, Kas., and two daughters, Mrs. B.F. Wescoat of Conesville, Iowa, and Mrs. Marguerite McSpadden of Nevada, Mo. She leaves 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, three brothers and five sisters.
She was a truly patriotic citizen, proud of her privilege of suffrage, a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a member of the Relief Corps, and a very active life long worker for prohibition.
She had relatives in the war of 1812, her father was a volunteer in the Civil War, her son Edward is a Spanish-American War veteran who saw service in the Philippines, and her son, Robert, is an overseas veteran of the World War. A testament carried by each of the last three named through their respective wars is a highly prized heirloom of the family.
Mrs. Lawrence was a faithful and loving wife, a very successful mother, a sincere Christian woman. She was a life long member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Her brilliant mind retained its keenness to the very last.

Obituary of Robert W. Hannant

Obituary of Robert W. Hannant taken from the Shell Rock News, Shell Rock, Butler County, Iowa, October 24, 1907:

ROBERT W. HANNANT DEAD

Well Known Citizen Called to His Reward.

Funeral services for the late Robert W. Hannant, who died at his home in this city last Saturday, Oct. 19, were conducted from the M.E. church Monday afternoon by Rev. Walter Piper of Rockford and interment was made in Riverside cemetery. The following obituary was furnished by Rev. Piper:

After a year or more of imperfect health and suffering one of God's chosen people has been translated from the field of labor to reward. Ripe with christian experience of a spiritual life, he was swept through the gates of glory into the holy city, to receive the unfading honors of immortality.

Robert W. Hannant was born in England . June 21, 1830. At the age of five he came with his parents to St. Johnsbury , Vermont . and here his marriage to Hannah Franklin occurred in May, 1852. To this union were born the following children, all of whom survive; Mrs. W.O. Culver, Shell Rock, (the only child able to be here during her father's final illness and in attendance at the funeral); Mrs. J. Card. Pierre, S. D.; Mrs. J. Lawrence, Nevada, Mo.; Mrs. J.F. Barnes, Norfolk, Neb.; Mrs. William Lister, Ponca, Neb.; Ada Hannant, Cherokee, Iowa; George M. Hannant, Sturgiss, S.D.; Rev. Curtis Hannant, South Dakota; Rev. N.E. Hannant, Ortonville, Minn.; Mrs. J.F. Treasure, DeSoto, Minn.

The mother of the above children passed away July 8, 1888 and on May 9, 1889, Mr. Hannant was married to Mrs. Emeline Hanna, the now bereft and sorrowing wife.

Mr. Hannant came to Iowa fifty-two years ago and since that time, with the exception of seven years in Nebraska , resided in and near Shell rock.

During the Civil war he enlisted in the service of his country, becoming a member of Co. E., Thirty-second Iowa, and served until the close of that dark strife, receiving his honorable discharge Aug. 24, 1865. He was a true patriot, a loyal soldier and brave on the field of battle.

Mr. Hannant was converted to God and united with the Methodist church about twelve years ago, and they have been years of constant devotion to Christ. For five years of my pastorate in Shell Rock I can speak in the highest terms of his devotion to the Master, his loyalty to the church and the kind and sweet spirit of his christian life. As a class leader, an office he held a number of years, he had but few superiors. He was tactful and wise in his words of council, loved the society of young people and was an active worker in the Epworth League. Though old in years he was young in spirit and, like a true soldier, was always found at his post of duty. He was a student of God's word and loved the bible as a precious treasure.

A good man, a devoted husband, a loving and tender-hearted father, a good neighbor and a splendid citizen has finished his course. Peace to his sacred memory.
Someone contacted me through another researcher earlier this year as they were descendants of Solomon who went to Canada and needed some help on the Norfolk side going further back.
I don't know if this will help but I do know a Robert Hannant bn abt 1832 did emigrate initially to Quebec and then moved onto Vermont. They emigrated before 1836 as a brother of Robert's was born there. The wife I have though is different and so is date of death.

As there are no published census data pre 1841 unless they are from a known "Hannant" village and I have extracted all the birth records etc it can be quite hard knowing exactly where in norfolk to look.

I don't know what civil registration is like in the USA but is the fathers name listed on marriage certs? THis would certainly help. Also given the dates it would be a whole family emigrating .

JAcqui

Hi Barbara - you're direct e-mail is bouncing saying that I'm blacklisted by you so I'll have to carry on using the message board!

Daisy is listed as age 16 on the 1901 census, therefore was born about 1885, her parents are listed as Thomas from Hevingham and Mary which is the same as what we thought. You can add her to the tree I sent you last year along with another sister Maud bn abt 1882. They are livng in Murston in Kent. If you go to the 1901 census site and search for HANNART you will find them.

Jacqui

Hi - I am looking for links to Robert W Hannant. Per the 1900 census he was born Jun 1830 in England & came to the US in 1835. It appears his 1st wife was Hannah with whom he had the following children:

Born in Vermont: Clarissa R, Mary L, Tamar(?)

Born in Iowa: Ida, Fanny A, Adaline, George M, Curtis, Morrison or Norison

Robert served in the civil war in the 32nd Infantry Regiment Iowa, Company E. He received a pension for this service in later years.

It appears he married his 2nd wife Emiline about 1889. He died Oct 19, 1907 & is buried at Riverside Cemetery, Shell Rock, Butler Co., Iowa - Grave 19S. Emiline did not die until sometime after Apr 3, 1930.

I have just started researching this family line. Ida Hannant Wilcox Schlater was my husband's grandmother.

Please let me know if you have any information / suggestions regarding this matter. Thank you!

Dorothea Williams-Schlater
dorotheasmail-genealogy@yahoo.com

Hi Jacqui

I am still at it (excuse my mothers email address, I forgot my name and password so am using hers cindy_vance80@hotmail.com).
I am still trying to solve the mystery of my grandmother's family. Eleanor Marie Hannant, born between 1909 -1918 (she would never tell us her real date of birth) and her brother William Hannant 1911. We know for sure William was born in Thunder Bay. I am told the Margaret (Margret) could have been Hannant and crossed at the US border just prior to the birth of William. From pics I have they were definately indian and my grandmother admitted they were but would say nothing more. It was my mother's assumption that Margaret was an Astley prior to the marriage to Robert Hannant but I find no records and as both Astley and Hannant are not native names it is highly likely that Astley may have been Margaret's mother's maiden name. Have you any record of a Margaret Hannant coming to Canada through the US and "getting lost"? I have a feeling Margaret shamed her family and was disowned. Have you come accross anything similar or has anyone else?

I noticed your message on the boards answering someone about the Hannant Family of Norfolk. Well, I'm looking for some Hannants and wonder if they could be the same or related. My Grandmother's name was Elizabeth Davidson (nee Whinney). She married a Charles William Davidson in the last quarter of 1871 in South Shields County Durham. Her parents names were William Winnie (or Whinney) and Charlotte Frances Hannant (who I think was born 1837). Elizabeth was born 1854. If there is any connection I would be very pleased to have contact with you and maybe fill you in on the events in Australia which is where they migrated to in the late 1880's. The name Thorpe I think comes in somewhere.
Hoping to hear from you and thank you
Marie Steley............lmsteley@tpg.com.au

In January the british 1901 census will be released onto the internet and you should then be able to find your Herbert from there. Most Hannant's originate from Norfolk but my the late 1800's they had started to scatter far and wide.

Yes, I would be interested. My grandmother was named Daisy Hannant and she married Edward Douglas Whitnell, so I don't know if there is any connection. I do know they came from Norfolk.
