I typoed Ruth's name. It's Hanold, not Hannold.

As I said, Hilbert Ross was with John's widow & their kids in 1850. She was Elizabeth Servey before the marriage. Apparently, he was back in PA by the time of the Civil War.

If you want to email me directly, feel free.

I need to put you in contact with Ruth Hannold Crane. She is continuing research started by her parents. She is from John P Hanold's 1st wife, & I'm from his 2nd wife.

For my money, Ruth has absolutely the best records & documentation. I think that I recall something about a problem tracing Hilbert.

Hilbert was with the widow of John P Hanold, in Kosciusko County, on the 1850 census.

I am not sure when or where the name change took place. My understanding was that there was a split in the family and some kept the Hanold/Hannold name and some changed to Hanover. The subject was never discussed to why the name change. David Eli was listed in the 1870 & 1920 Warrick Co, Indiana census as Hanover. He died in Norris City, Il as Hanold. I found a picture of David and Ida's gravestone that says Hanold. My grandfather George Minuard's birth certificate says he was born to David and Ida (McKinney) Hanover. He is listed in the 1920 Vermillion Co, Il census as Menyard Hannover.

Kathy,
I have recently learned that I am a descendant of Hans George Hannold. I would be interested in any info you could provide. My grandfather was George Minuard Hanover, Sr. His parent were David Eli Hanold/Hannold and Ida Mckinney Hanold. David's father was Hilbert Ross Hannold. For some reason the surname was changed from Hanold to Hanover with my grandfather. In one census David is listed as Hanover and in another as Hanold.

I would be interested in any info you could provide.
I live within walking distance of the Hannold house in Haddonfield.
The library that you speak of in Woodbury is the library of the Gloucester County Historical Society.
There is an immigration record for Hans George Hannold's arrival in the port of Philadelphia.
He had Isaac by his 1st wife. The bond to marry her was filed in NJ. Isaac was christened at St Michael & Zion Church in Philadelphia.
He married the 2nd wife at St. Michael & Zion Church in Philadelphia. George was one of the sons of that marriage. This is all documented. Where are you getting your information?
What cemetery in Haddonfield are Isaac & Elizabeth in? They can't be in the Friends cemetery. That leaves 2, & I can walk to either. I know where Hans George, Rachel & Margaret are in the Colestown cemetery.
I'm descended from Isaac's son, John P. Hanold.
I placed the initial query on this board because the IGI shows Hannolds in the British Isles, in the right time period. I have not seen documentation to PROVE that Hans George Hannold was born in Essen. The ship that he came on started in Rotterdam but had a stop at Cowes.
Also, if he came from England, he would already be a British subject. I have seen no record of Hans George swearing allegiance to the British crown. On the other hand a lot of the colonial & early federal documents in NJ no longer exist.

The records are in a little library in Woodbury New Jersey.

George and his brother Isaac were from Essen German. George's home still stands in Haddonfield, New Jersey. It is now a lawfirm, but is registered as a historical home.

Isaac and his half Lenape Indian wife are buried near Haddonfield. You can visit their graves!

Isaac and Elizabeth had a farm around Chews Landing at the time of the Revolutionary War and it is documented in a book in Woodbury regarding the Battle of Redbank, New Jersey. They had about ten children--one of which I am a descendant.

Hannold continue to reside in South Jersey. Some were from Paulsboro, Woodbury and Gloucester. The spelling of Hanold or Hannold are from the same two brothers.

I don't know who is the origin. My information originally came from Ruth. Her information came from research that her parents did over many years. Other sources are possible. I later found a book in the National Archives regional branch in Philadelphia that lists colonial immigration records. Hans George is listed there.

That is the information that I have but it is second or third hand with no original documentation. I have never been able to find out where that information came from or who was the first to circulate it. Without more "secure" evidence I am not going to say that it is fact.

Hanold/Hannold

In 1750, Hans George Hannold left Rotterdam for Philadelphia, via Cowes. I have noticed in the Mormons' records, Hanold/Hannold & numerous variant spellings show up in England. If someone is working on the family in England, or anywhere in the UK, I would be interested in comparing notes. I found it a bit odd that upon reaching Philadelphia, Hans George did not settle down in Germantown, but, instead, settled in a primarily Quaker area in southern NJ
