I live in the small town of Paxville, SC, named after Joseph
Pack who received a royal land grant in the latter 1700s and settled with his wife, Louisa Alexander, in this area, where they proceeded to have 12 children. Being a descendant of Joseph and Louisa, I have often heard the story, as have other descendants< that Joseph was the son of William
Augustus,
Duke of
Cumberland, third son of King George II of
England, and Mary
Packard, a commoner. Joseph elected to take part of his mother's surname as his own, hence the name
Pack. Supposedly, the land grant was given to Joseph because he was the cousin of King George III. Does anyone have information that would verify this story? Can anyone tell me where I might go to get information that might verify this story? Any help would be appreciated.
