I would like to talk with Brian about his comments in quotes below about my grand uncle, Fred Hans--

Custer's Last Stand: The Anatomy of an American Myth - Page 87 by Brian W. Dippie - History - 1994 - 214 pages
"... Captain Charles L. Von Berg and Fred M. Hans occupied worlds of their own, all-inclusive creations contained entirely within their minds. Though they filled these miniature globes to bursting, they were left to explain why their adventures made so little impress on the outside world, on history at large.

Custer's Last Stand: The Anatomy of an American Myth - Page 79 by Brian W. Dippie - History - 1994 - 214 pages
"---actually discovered the mutilated remains of the General, with the "long dark hair" still on his severed head. Besides modestly asserting that in his capacity as "official investigator of the Custer Massacre for the War Department" he rounded up the recalcitrant Sioux alnost single-handedly, "Lone Star" Fred M. Hans also purported to have found the bodies of the Seventh Cavalry troopers, while Captain Charles L. Von Berg, who carried dispatches to Custer from General Terry in one account, from General Crook in another, told how he discovered---"

If anyone is interested, I have Fred Hans diary during his scouting days in the 1870s.

Please reply directly to --
dadbrown_99@yahoo.com
Montana Weyer was my Grandmother. She wrote a book about her father Fred M. Hans called Trailing the Teepees. Fred died in an elevator accident in 1923 when he was working as a nightwatchman for the Omaha World Herald. I believe that he was 60-61. Montana Helena Weyer passed away in 1987 at the ripe old age of 96. I grew up in Ainsworth, NE about a quarter of a mile from her, and she was a wonderful lady who had a great impact upon my life. My email is glensco63@yahoo.com and my name is Glen Weyer. I am currently living in Asia. Where are you located at? I was unaware that Nancy Elvira Daniels was of Indian descent. Do you happen to know of what tribe. I have seen a picture of her so it does make some sense. That would give me Native American blood on both sides of my family, but one would never guess it. The book is actually called The Great Sioux Nation.

Relative of Fred M. "Lone Star" HANS wants to submit biographical info

My gd uncle Fred Hans was born 12 July 1861 in Bremer Co. Iowa and died 17 April 1923 in Omaha. Fred had a very interesting life and colorful career as indicated by Fred’s diary and also by the more than 30 obituaries and over 300 newspaper articles and those are just the ones that have been digitized or available by searching on-line or thru membership! Undoubtedly there will be many more articles in newspapers located within the archives on microfilm/fiche of various libraries, museums or historical and genealogical societies.

During the life and career of Fred HANS, starting in 1876 as a scout for the Army at age 16, Fred participated in numerous historically significant events with various famous and or infamous people that were associated with our American West including the Indian wars of the Rocky Mtn states and the territories of the western Great Plains states region prior to statehood, as well as with bandits and stage robbers of the lawless frontier up until about 1900 as a deputy US Marshall and also as a special agent for various gov’t agencies. Fred Hans also served as Chief of Detectives for two different railroads at the same time in Nebraska and Iowa.

The published newspaper and magazine articles substantiate the entries or events in Fred's 276 page diary.

Please contact "Dan Brown" dadbrown(followed by a underscore)(_)followed by 99 followed by @ followed by yahoo.com

Paul

Hello again

I agree that it's difficult to believe all of the "claims to fame" that have been published in numerous papers across the mid-west and including the NY Times. In the early 1900's Fred Hans had a close friend named C. R. Porter who worked for the NY papers as a correspondent and in Omaha where Fred lived. I think they both must have realized that keeping his stories alive was their "bread and butter".

At any rate, I would like to talk privately with you at--
dadbrown_99@yahoo.com

I would also like to talk to Bill O'Neal.

What records did you search or where ?

Do you have access to any newspaper archives ?

Can you tell me about your book ? Who published it and the name ?

Can you send me scans and attachments of any page that refers to Fred Hans, please.

Dan in Oregon

I am not related to Fred M. Hans. I did a little research on him in conjunction with a book I wrote last year. I read Hans's diary which was published in the historical society journal of one of the Western states.

Fred Hans was evidently a scout or trapper. He authored a book about the Sioux which is considered a reliable source. Early in the 20th Century, when the Wild West was being mythologized, Hans began claiming to have had some pretty fantastic adventures on the frontier, as reported in his "diary." These adventures are not plausible. They would have made him one of the greatest gunfighters of the period, and yet no one else seems to have noticed him. Hans also claims to have served as a scout for General Custer, but records make no mention of him. I sent Hans's accounts to the Western historian Bill O'Neal, who dismissed them as fabrications.

Many thanks for your reply. I will look into this possible link. Although our Emile Hans was born in Paris I have no idea at present where his ancestors originated. We have photographs of Emile and Adele on my husband's blog at:
http://tonybayfield.blogspot.com/search/label/family

I will reply again if I have more definite information.
Regards
Su

What attracted my attention is the word "jeweller".Mine was married to Marthe Isabelle Schrubb, born in Benson UK 1749,from apparently quite a wealthy family, linked with the Evans. One of them was an artist fine jewells maker on high street. I'll tryto have a look in Paris for Emile and Adèle and will come back to you if i Have any.
kind regards.
agneshannoyer@hotmail.fr

Hans family in Paris 1870

Hello

I am searching for the family of my husband's great grandfather, Émile Hans.

Émile Hans, was born in 1838 or 1842 (records that we have conflict). We know from his passport, issued on 6 September 1870, that he lived at 32 rue Lepic in Montmartre, the 18th Arrondisment of Paris, and that he worked as a watchmaker and jeweller. He was also an artist, or at least he dabbled a little, three of his sketches survive. We also have a photograph believed to be of his sister Adèle Hans, taken in Paris.

Émile left France for England between September 1870 and April 1871 and appears on the UK Census of 1871, in lodgings and apparently still a bachelor. By 1891, he was married with three children and residing in St Pancras, London.

So far in our search, we have traced Émile's life and offspring in England, but finding records of him and his sister Adèle before he left France is proving more difficult. It seems no census was taken of the population of Paris at this time and many records are known to have been lost or destroyed during the Prussian invasion and subsequent conflicts. I would be grateful for any help with tracing this family in France. I would love to find any record of his parents or siblings.

Regards
S Bayfield

Charles Albert Hans - was my grandfather born in Milton on 9/20/1864, married Zella Augusta Conway (born 8/21/1883 in Danville, PA) and had 12 children: Sarah Ellen, Charles, Eva Althea, Elmer, Alfred, Martha Jane, David, Ralph Chester, Julia, William, Wilhemina Ruth (died in infantcy) and my mother Irene Edna. Irene is currently the only living child of Charles and Zella. However, there are numerous first cousins (we just met in Milton for Eva's funeral) with Sonny the eldest (b: 1930) and Timothy Wayne the youngest (born 1964). Both Charles and Zella are buried in the Milton cemetary, along with numerous children. Two sister-in-laws are also still living (Alfred's wife - Helen Bobb and Williams wife Marty) Hope this information helps

Her father was Peter Jacob Hans, his father was Albert Jacob Hans, his father was Ingwer Peter Hans, and his father was Peter Hans. He I believe was from Witzwort Germany. I would like to know where Gisingen is. I am searching for my Zoller family in Germany. My grandfather was said to come from Seegingen, and there is no such place. Any ideas? Marcia

Hans Family in Ohio

Hi, My name is Margaret Hans and I am searching for the Hans (originally Hanselman) family in Ohio (Canton & Cleveland). The origninal Hanselman (in my family) who emigrated to the US, was John Hanselman, who settled in Cleveland, Ohio. He was born in 1851, and came to the US in 1869, at the age of 18 years old. He married Augusta Priebe in 1874. They had a daughter, Lydia, and a son, John R. John R. changed his surname from Hanselman to Hans. John R. married a woman named Mary--her maiden name was Neeinty. John R. and Mary had 4 sons: Clarence ("Jack"), Roy, Paul, and Don. John & Mary raised the 4 boys in Canton, Ohio. Clarence ("Jack") married Muriel Genevieve Dewey from Tecumseh, Michigan and they settled in Detroit, Michigan. Clarence and Muriel had one son, David. Clarence was a Detroit Police Office, shot & killed in 1928 in the line of duty. I haven't been able to find any information earlier than John Hanselman and Augusta Priebe, but would appreciate hearing from anybody who may have information on this family. Thank you.
Margaret
margaret_hans@msn.com

Dorothy,

I think you may be confused. I do not know a Dorothy other than you on this Hans message board.

Christian Friederich Edward (Edward) Hans was a brother to my Great-great-grandmother, Emilia (Hans) Esche. I found Edward and Frank Hans, Emilia's brothers, when I was researching Emilia's immigration on Ancestry.com. Emilia, Edward, and Frank Hans all immigrated together on 13 Sep 1854 on the ship Chimborazo. I started to look for more information about Edward Hans when I discovered that he had immigrated with Emilia.

I was interested to know how you came to know the date of Edward's marriage to Bertha. Thank you for sharing your information with me in an earlier posted message. I do not know anything more about Bertha other than that I saw on the 1900 MI Census that she had been married to Edward Hans for 5 years.

Good luck in your research. - Cheryl

Gloria (Hans) Wallace
Quote from one of her emails
"She was my step G-grandma on my paternal side. My Dad and both of his folks were born and raised in Berrian Co., Mich. My Grandfather (Paul Emil) was Edward's youngest son by his 1st wife Catharine"

This is the rest of her 1st. e-mail to me

" have not done an extensive search on Bertha just what I've come across in searching my direct line, and verbally from her "granddaughter", my aunt.
As you know, she married Christian Edward Hans (he went by Edward) on Feb. 1, 1895, possibly in New Buffalo, Berrien Co., Mich. If so it would be recorded in St. Joseph, Berrien co., Mich. It seems I ran across it there once in my searching and wrote the one line down for my records: "Bertha Christina Kaufman from Millwalkie, Wisc. Father Phillip Klugescheid". This leads me to believe she was married previously.

According to a typed copy of the 1900 Fed. Census sent to me by another relative doing research at the time, I have: Bertha born 1850 in Ger., Age 49 yrs., Married 5 yrs., Children living 0, (she & Edward had no children) Father and Mother both born in Ger., Came to US 1871, in US 29 yrs.

She died in 1921 (don't know date) and is supposed to be buried in the Pine Grove Cemetary in New Buffalo, Mich. I have a not to good a picture of head stone which has Edward 1836 - 1916 Cathariine his wife 1838 - 1892 Bertha his wife 1850 - Her death year is not engraved in..

Was the Dorothea you mentioned her sister? Are you related thru her or another sibling? I believe Bertha and Edward lived in New Buffalo, Mich. all their married life. I hope this helps by giving you places and dates to search. Sorry I don't have more info. Did you get any other hits from your query? Am looking forward to hearing from you"

Hope this helps
I am interested in Fred Hans also. I found an article about him in the New York Times, Nov. 4, 1900, pg. 24, titled "Hans, the Bandit Hunter." If you can get to a good library you should be able to access this through Historical New York Times on-line. Or you can go to the NYT Archives on their website and pay to print it out.

There was also an article on Hans in the Literary Digest, May 26, 1923, pgs. 57-59 on the occasion of his death.

I hope I will not offend anyone if it sounds like Hans told some tall tales. He told the NYT reporter, "I can kill a man at 300 yards every shot with my pistol." In the Literary Digest he claims to have done all his pistol shooting fanning the hammer.

Anyway, I would like to know more about him.

--Paul Kirchner

I recently found a Neta Vallis listed at 527 W. 127th Street from Bermuda whose father was Thomas Hans. I think Thomas Hans was my great-grandfather's brother whose name is Stowe Hans. I found Neta Vallis on the Ellis Island rolls when searching for my relatives, she was listed as the person Thomas Hans was visiting.
