Bertrand Vernon Hanwell, son of Arthur Hanwell of Nottinghamshire England, and his wife Ada Bakewell. Bertrand was the youngest, and the only one born in America. He married Charlotte Cristiana Kohler, daughter of Jakob Johann Kohler and Laura Agnes Binker. Two Children Charlotte L, and Bertrand Vernon Hanwell. What I have is online in the family tree. There are more generations there, depending on the line.

Happy Ancestor Hunting!

I assume you have seen the ships list for the Hannibal from Feb 26, 1834 where Geo Anwell, age 30, says he is a Baker. I've also seen a New York City directory for the late 1830's which also said baker. The first U.S. census showing occupation was 1850 and he (George Handwell) said miner, as did George Hammell in 1860. My guess is that by age 45, his eyesight had declined and he gave up on being a tailor and went to the mines. They were not well off financially, a few years after George's death, his widow's home was sold for back taxes but her son-in-law, Robert Esgar, bought it.

In terms of the census consistently saying he was born in England, I have seen other cases where people with English roots but born in Wales, said they were English - it may have been a nationalistic or ethnic thing.

Well, I think that it could be an ethnic thing. I have two friends from Wales, that if you say you love their English Accent, they get quite upset and tell you that they are Welsh, not from England!!! I made that mistake one time and hopefully never again.

And may I ask how you are related to the family?

Rose

I don't know why there is a difference in the records. In 2006 Adrian Hanwell was emailed be his whole family tree. He still lives in England. It's been too many years to remember all the information He gave me, but he told me that he couldn't find any evidence of "my" George in England. If you look back at the posts you can get his email and have him send you what he has. I still need to search through the mountain of information I inherited form my grandmother and find the letters from Kutura Jackson.

Right, but in all U.S. record of George Hanwell, he lists his birthplace as England, not Wales, and his occupation as a Miner, not a Baker or Tailor.

I'm not doubting your family stories, just wondering why the documented evidence is different.

George was born in Wales. Maria(Mary) Pearce was born in Clapham Parrish, Surrey County, England.

George was a baker and a tailor. He came to New York and opened a bakery, but didn't like New York much and decided to move his family to PA. that is according to the story that I have in my book.

I remember reading that Keturah Jackson was the family historian and she wrote a family history on the Hanwells in 1953.She was b. Dec 12, 1893 Arnot, Bloss, Tioga, Pa. She died in Blossberg, Tioga, PA She married Furman Lee Campbell but had no children.
She was the daughter of Ida May Hanwell and John Jackson. Ida's father was John Hanwell, son of George Hanwell and Mary Pearce.

Rosanna

Hi Sherie,
No, the original information that I obtained from my aunt who received the information from a relative who hired a genealogist to do research on the family Hanwell/Henwell.

George Henwell or Hanwell was born in 1809 in Cardiff Wales and died February 29, 1864 in Blossburg, Tioga, PA. He married Mary or Maria Pearce on December 16, 1833 at the Church of Barnes, District of St. Marry, Lambeth Parish, Surrey, England. She was the daughter of William Pearce and Sarah Sabin. She was born on October 24, 1808 in Clapham Parrish, Surrey, England and died in 1876 and is buried in Union Cemetery, Blossburg, Tioga, PA. Their marriage was witnessed by William Pearce and Jane Bishop (relationship unknown). They came on a ship called "Hannibal" in 1835 to New York, America. This information was submitted in Nov 12, 1999 - Broderbund WFT Vol. 5, Ed. 1, Tree # 3592

The original name may have been Henwell. People travelled to the US and because of their accents the person writing the information would sometimes mispell the name. As soon as I get my information out of the closet at my sons house I will let you know what I have. I have posted my family tree in 2003 on Ancestry.com and it is in One World Tree now.

I have done a lot of research on George lately and can't get further than his Marriage in 1833. What I can figure from PA Census records is that he never lived in Wales - every census record refers to England.

When was Bertrand III born. I don't see a Bertrand listed as one of George's children.

Yes, I do recall George was married to a Mary Pearce/Pierce. There were two other people in the past before me who actually researched this information for our family tree. George did come to America, and lived in PA. Almost all the Hanwell lines in the USA are decended from George Hanwell.

Rosanna

My grandmother was Pearle Hanwell m. to James P. Wiggins and her family tree is on here, I posted it several years ago.
