Hardiman & Silverstein : looking for relatives in Europe and U.S.

I've never known much about either side of my family.

My mother's maiden name was Hardiman (but later changed to Gillies) and she is from Ramsgate, Kent, in England. She now lives in Virginia, USA.

My father's name is Silverstein and he was born in Brooklyn, NY, USA. He also lives now in Virginia. I'm told his grandfather is a German immigrant and that there is also Russian and Polish on his side of the family.

Any help on learning more about distant and foreign relatives would be helpful.

My mother's maiden name was originally Hardiman, and we live in Virginia. Her surname was changed to Gillies, as a child. She was born and raised in Ramsgate, Kent, England. I was born in Alexandria, Virginia, but do not bear the Hardiman name. My father's surname is Silverstein. They met when he was stationed in England, while in the Air Force, in the 70's.

Hi There

I was wondering if you might be able to help me with a bit of a brick wall I have encountered. I am looking for information on an Amy Elizabeth Hardiman born 1865 in Braunston, Northamptonshire. She married my Great Grandfather Westley Frederick Wells in August 1887 and lived in Birmingham, Warwickshire prior to the 1871 census. I have her father as William Hardiman born abt 1840 in Kidderminster, Worcestershire and her mother Mary Ann born abt 1833 in Braunston, Northamptonshire. This information comes from the 1871 census but I have been unable to find anything other than this and their marriage of which I have a copy.

I would be very grateful for any help you can offer and I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards

Ruth

Hello John,
So far this is what I have found - The 1901 Census lists in Barnacawley (Fairymount, Roscommon): Michael Hardiman (36), Kate (30), Patrick (5), Winnie T. (3), Nellie Jane (1), and Thomas C. (0).
The 1911 Census lists : Michael (52), Kate (42), Patrick (15), Ellie (11), Thomas (10), Kathleen (8) and Mary Agnes (7). Winnie is missing in the 1911 Census.
In later years, did Winnie change her name to Theresa (perhaps her middle name)? Thomas, in later years, used his middle name Christopher? Is Patrick your grandfather? Were there subsequent censuses in 1921 and 1931? I am still looking for Vera, Emily and Joseph - in a census?
Christopher 21, arrived at NY, NY in November, 1922 and traveled to Harrison, NJ; Vera, 19, arrived at NY, NY in December, 1922 and traveled to St. Louis, MO (Aunt Nellie Cody?); Ellen, 25, arrived in Boston, MA, October, 1925 and traveled to Montclair, NJ (Aunt M. Baldwin?); Mary, 23, arrived at NY, NY, September, 1927 and traveled to Montclair, NJ (brother, Christopher Hardiman).
There are other Hardimans in Barnacawley included on the two censuses - Bridget, Martin, James, Elizabeth - are they related?
There are Hardmans in Barnacawley in 1858 - John, Martin, Martin Jr., and Michael and Michael Jr. Do you know if they are related?
In 1867, a Mary Hardiman, "servant of Barnahawley of Michael Hardiman at Castlereagh RD", married Edward Dalton, "farmer of Kiltybanks of Michael Dalton". What do you think - any relation?
Keywords - Hardiman of Roscommon, Castlerea, Fairymount, Barnacawley, Frenchpark and Tibohine. Am I on the right track?
That's it for now...
Looking for information on John Walter Hardiman (1922-1969), the son of John Wesley Hardiman and Sadie Ordy Moss.

I was born a Hardiman in 1949 in Richmond, Virginia. My biological father was John Walter Hardiman. The information I have been able to piece together is: He was born Feb. 22, 1922 and died in 1969. He had a sister named Pearl who was born in 1919 and I think he had another sister Doris born in 1924. His parents (my grandparents) were John Wesley Hardiman and Sadie Ordy Moss.

My mother's name was Marjorie Lee Quillen. Her mother was named Ethel Margaret Robinson. She was married at the time to Ashby James Quillen. Records show that she later married Issac Byrd Little.

As you can see I have traced names and dates but I don't have anything personal like stories or pictures. I was adopted in 1952 and tried to find information several times without any luck. I have found news paper articles about a man named John Walter Hardiman that murdered a man in 1949. This is the year I was born. Was this John Walter Hardiman my father? There is a newspaper article about another daughter - Myrtle Lee who was this mans daughter that was adopted out then kidnapped while he was in jail. All the newspaper articles came from the Beckley Post-Herald (Beckley, West Virginia).

John Walter Hardiman and Marjorie Lee Quillen had 3 children from 1944 to 1949 (my 2 sisters and I.) One day taken away. I know my biological father is dead and possibly my biological mother.

I am hoping someone can help answer my questions - might have a few stories about relatives and pictures would be great!

Hi Lindsey,

I'm very much a novice myself. I always start from the known and head towards the unknown. Don't know what timeframe you are currently researching, but when the dates fit I start with the census returns, then try and link those into parish records, and go from there.

Depending upon what info you have, you can sometimes find extra information and details in newspaper reports, tax documents, wills, etc. Landed gentry and criminals are always the easiest as they were well documented :o) Unfortunately most of my lines were law-abiding normal people. Good to know, but makes research rather difficult as they aren't newsworthy!

As you've already found, the directories can help. Sometimes you need to take a bit of a leap of faith, and then try to prove your theory. For example, I've had success in finding links by looking at neighbours in census returns and witnesses on marriage certificates.

Let me know if you have particular problems, and I'll try and come up with some ideas - sometimes someone else can think of a way at coming at a problem from a completely different direction.

Good luck
Graham

You have kindly shared a lot with me previously and I am extremely grateful.

In case you don't see the response I have sent to Graham, I found an entry in the Post Office Directory for Dorsetshire and Wiltshire 1849 for Longfleet last night, quite by chance as I was looking for ancestors of a completely different branch of the family "Hardiman - Coachbuilder" I think there must be a good chance that there is a link to us.

I have also found a Mr Hardiman within a few miles of my present home who I feel might be linked and intend to follow this up too.

Thanks again for your response and kindness.

Lindsey

Graham
Thanks for your response and I will contact you directly shortly.

By chance I was looking at some records on Ancestry last night concerning a totally different line and found "Post Office Directory of Dorsetshire and Wiltshire 1849" entry for Longfleet - "Hardiman - Coachbuilder" !!

Possibly linked to us?

I will let you know if I find anything else of interest. As you said, Tarrant Hinton is not very far from Sixpenny Handley and it is very likely we are linked in some way. It came as quite a shock to me to find Dorset ancestry after digging around in my mother's family. As I often have cause to go to Dorchester and in particular to Community House, next door to the Records Office, I should be able to carry out direct research into our families and see if I can find a link. I would appreciate some suggestions of how to go about this, however as I am still a bit of a novice.

Lindsey

Hello Lindsey,
My records show that I was in contact with you in July of last year and provided you with information regarding the Hardimans of Handley. We are not related to the haulage Hardimans, who originate from Bowerchalke near Salisbury.
Like you, I am descended from the Hardimans of Handley and have spent the last 30 years researching the family. I probably have all of the pre-19th century evidence of them and would be happy to share with you. Let me know.
Regards, Dave Hardiman.

Dave

I have just found this thread and am interested as I have Hardiman ancestors in East Dorset, specifically in and around Sixpenny Handley. I have been told there are two branches of Hardimans, one linked to my ancestors and one around Shaftesbury. I live in Dorset, by chance only, and have seen lorries with Hardiman on the side as I gather the Shaftesbury line runs a haulage business.

I have been in touch with a couple of other folk with Hardimans in their lines who are distant relations and wonder if we too are distantly related. My most recent Hardiman is my 3 x great granmother Anne who married William Snow and lived in Sixpenny Handley. Her mother was Sarah Makrell which is another unusual name, seems to be East Dorset.

Lindsey

, Francis Hardyman 1725 Prince George, VA

From the Early Virginia files we find Sarah Sheffield and a Francis Hardyman witnessing a document. It may be that this Sarah is indeed a Hardyman herself and she so named her son Hardiman Sheffield whom married Joice and had son James Sheffield in early Surry, VA. What a clue this would be!

A Sarah Sheffeild who witnessed a deed 7 Oct. 1725 Sarah was living in that area where all the early Sheffield’s settled.
Someone from Moyne would be a member of Fairymount Church, about four miles from Ballaghaderreen. Perhaps if you contact that church you could get more info. Good luck.

Hello Jim,
I would like to take you up on your offer of assistance but I really don't have much to go on yet. I have yet to obtain the death certificate for Thomas Hardiman b.Co Galway 1859, died 22/6/1949, Vic, Australia. As yet I am still trying to find how or when he came to Australia.
All the best,
Jennifer

Hi Des,
Thanks so much for your interest and offer to help.
When do you think this visitor from Australia came to Ireland? Was it after the 1950's? I am trying to work out whether it was a son (Bernard, John or Michael all 3 born in Australia) of Thomas Hardiman b 1859 (parents Thomas Hardiman and Mary Concannon)and Mary O'SHANNESSY.
When I have more information I will take you up on your offer to check them against those at your family tomb.
All the best,
Jennifer

Thanks for your comments. Thomas Francis Hardiman b 1859 (Parents Thomas Hardiman & Mary Concannon) came to Australia in the 1880's, married 1887 to Mary O'Shannnasy. They had three sons Bernard, John and Michael. They sound like the same family regarding the church. Do you have any other details? Do you know where in Galway he was turned away at the door or why he was turned away?

Hi Jenny,

It doesn't seem I ever got your e-mail. Anyway, I was doing some research for Bob Hardiman in the US on a Hardiman relation that came to Sydney. Hit a dead end there. If you require any assistance in Australia or Victoria on your line, please let me know.

Kind Regards,

Jim
Tasmania

Hello Bob, I have found that our Thomas Hardiman (b abt 1859 Co. Galway M 1887 Mary O'Shannessy), who migrated to Australia before 1887, is the son of Thomas Hardiman and Margaret Concannon. I am still trying to track more information. I have found via the IGI that Thomas Hardiman and Margaret Concannon had two daughters (Margaret b.27 May 1864 and Sebina b.3 Jul 1866) baptised in Athenry, Galway. Any help would be appreciated.

Hardiman go from Ireland to Staffordshire, England to US

I have traced my great grandparents John and Catherine (Guifoyle) Hardiman to West Bromwich, Staffordshire. They married there had two children Barbara and John. John's brother Charles Hardiman married Catherine;s sister Barbara and they traveled to Brazil to start a colony of Irish Catholics around 1870. That failed and the next I know of them (Charles and Barbara) they are in Pittsburgh, PA with the rest of the family...John and Catherine and children and Cahterine and Barbara's parents James and Catherine Guilfoyle. My grandmother Eugenie was born in Pgh in 1875. I am lucky to know this much..taken a while. But what I really would love to know is where they came from in Ireland. They must have come to England around the Famine Time. They left for the US around 1872. Does any of this connect with any other Hardimans?

Hello,

My paternal grandmother was born a Hardiment. Although she was born in Grimsby, she spent most of her life in Hull. Her father's family came from around Wicklewood and Wymondham in Norfolk. My grandmother had a brother who moved to Scotland, so I'm told.

If you want to know more please get in touch.

Best wishes,

Ian Howell

I do not know Thomas Hardiman's fathers name or where they were from in Galway. All I know is that Thomas came to Australia before 1888. I do not have proof of his birth place until I see the Marriage certificate. I have come to a brickwall at the moment. Thanks so much for your assistance. If I find out more I will let you know.
Jennifer
