What I'm trying to discover is whether or not Thomas Harding (1799-1878) had any siblings. Most likely he had, but unfortunately I haven't any record of his parents. Did your William have brothers and sisters and if so, is one a Thomas with those dates? I need to link up with someone who has enough information to establish a 'family' for Thomas. My Thomas was born in St. George's, Bristol and he married an Elizabeth. They had eight children (4 girls and 4 boys). In the 19th century the family were market gardeners in the Pyle Marsh (Pilemarsh) district of Bristol.

Although we have the fact they married in Shenandoah Co VA in 1785, her parents Henry Harding and Rebecca Netherton are shown to get married in 1776. This is a problem since Sarah Harding would only be, at the most... 9 years old when she married in 1785?? Any thoughts??

Hi Everyone

I am looking for the 1911 whereabouts of Josiah / Joshua Harding who was born in Staffordshire in the Sept qtr of 1868. I have him in 1871 and 81 with his parents and his marriage to a Mary Ellen Travis in Ashton Under Lynne in 1889 and then them both in Whitfield Derbyshire in 1891. By 1901 the family are living in Prescot with their son, Thomas.

By 1911, Mary Ellen describes herself as 'married' and is living with a Charles Thomas Brownbill as his housekeeper. Of Josiah / Joshua there is no trace. I had a look on freebmd for a possible death for him between 1901-11 but there is non listed.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards
Frank

My gg-grandmother was Viola Belle Harding, born around 1886 in Bellefonte, PA. She married Edward Murphy from Harrisburg, PA in 1908, who was the first African-American alderman in that city, and there is where they and their 5 children were born and settled until she died on her birthday on March 12, 1963. Outside of that, all I know about her is she had a sister who lived with them named Mary E. Harding, born a couple years before her.

UPDATE: Viola Belle Harding worked as a domestic for PA Governor Daniel E. Hastings, according to her daughter who passed just last year at the ripe old age of 96 years.

I could well be just a bit late on this thread, my gggrandfather was a William Harding, born 1826 somewhere in Ireland, Tipperary was mentioned by a late uncle, and so is my favourite, father James, both labourers. William moved to UK about 1851, married C of E, christened the children R.C., died Liverpool U.K. 1884, and that's all I've got. Have no idea what happened to James, but can find no record in U.K.

Cheers Pete

Hello; This is so old you may not be on it now but I found this excelelnt book online re history of the Harding brothers. Does not mention the boat name but still an important book: THE ANCESTRY OF PRESIDENT HARDING
AND ITS RELATION TO THE HARDINGS OF WYOMING VALLEY
AND CLIFFORD, PENNSYLVANIA BY CLARA GARDNER MILLER
PREPRINT FROM PROCEEDINGS AND COLLECTIONS OF THE
WYOMING HISTORICAL AND GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY VOLUME XXI.
Google the title and it comes up top headed: "new page"; Free for download.
I descend from Richard's line, would like to know the references for the name of the boat to research it further. Thanks.

I think I have seen that 1850 census. Thomas and Nancy's children were Sarah, who married a Kasson; Mary and Almina, who married Durling brothers; Samantha, for whom we've found no records (not in her father's will); Ziba, (not in father's will or later census records); Louisa, who married a Crawford; my great granmother, Permelia, who married Charles W. Myers; and Alvin, who married Mary ? I believe I found Ziba in Civil War records. He was mortally wounded in the Union attack on Fort Fisher, N.C. He died in New York and is buried there in a National Cemetery. Ironically, three of my husband's great-great grandfathers and other distant kin were captured at Fort Fisher.

Thank you so much for continuing to communicate. I have written to the Wyoming Historical Society, so maybe they will come up with something for us. Have you seen the 1850 US Census of Eaton Township, Wyoming, PA where several Rosengrants and Hardings are listed on the same page. Benjamin is listed as 73 years old, Polly is 72, Thomas Harding is 40 and is with Nancy who is also 40. Their children are Sarah 15, Mary 13, Samantha 7, Delia? 6, a male 4, and another female 2. I can't make out the names.

You are right about the many different Thomas's and the same is true for many of the names. Keep in touch.

A cousin and I have discovered that our Benjamin and Mary Polly (Hawkins) Harding are eluding other descendants. They have been found in census records, and most of the children's names have been recorded. The Wyoming County Historical Society in Tunkhannock, PA, has a huge file on Hardings. My husband and I found my Thomas and Nancy (Rosengrant) Harding in a list, but no parents listed for either. To make matters worse, there were several Thomas Hardings. My cousin in New York is still searching diligently. 'Will let you know if she discovers anything.

Harding-Cosgrove connection in Philadelphia PA

I am trying to find out if the John A Cosgrove buried in 1887 in New Cathedral cemetery in Phila PA is the John A Cosgrove I am searching for. He is buried in a plot owned by Henry Anderson and buried with him are two little children. John Harding age 5 died Jan of 1878 and an Edward Harding age 6 died in 1880. I looked up their death certificates at Family Search and found they are the children of Michael Harding and Ellen who lived on 712 Richmond Street in Philly. I still have no way to connect with any Cosgrove's. Does anyone out there have any Hardings in your family that would connect with the Cosgrove's? So I can confirm whether or not this John is mine? Thanks Oh any Anderson connections would also help!

Hi. Thanks for the info regarding Broy & Dave. I'm still trying to figure out who Amanda is. I know she's Broy/Dave's mom but is she James Solomon's mom? According to census records, she'd be only 9 or 10 y.o. when she had James....unlikely. However, other records I find seem to show she is James' mom. Do you have a birth certificate for Amanda Lute? A marriage record? or anything I can try to put James and this Amanda Lute as mother and son? I haven't found 1875 state census yet, but she may not have been married at the time of James' birth. Thanks again for your help. Barbara

Hi Barbara,
I saw an earlier post and wanted to let you know, both Dave and Broy Harding were arrested for the Modale Bank Robbery, but only Broy Escaped. David was released to his Sons custody when he was in his 70's. In 1946 Broy Fled to Montana,(from a Chain gang) changed his name and become "an upstanding citizen". Years later he was found in Montana by the FBI but when they tried to extradite him, his friends and neighbors signed a petition, so he was pardoned by the Governor. As long as he stayed in MT...but in 1956 he went to Washington looking for work and was reportedly found prowling behind a dairy with what looked like burglary tools. He was then sent back to Iowa to serve out his time. I do not know what happened after that. Its quite a story. When they were initially caught the Harding brothers were beaten severely. (I know thats probably not the kind of information your looking for but I thought I would share since I have taken quite and Interest in this Story over the years. Dave was my Great Grandfather, Broy my Great Uncle.)

I descend from Capt. Stephen and Amy (Gardner) Harding, as well as from Thomas and Hannah (Stark) Harding. There is a missing link, which one researcher thought to be Benjamin Stukely Harding, who married Mary Polly Hawkins. I've done limited research in Pennsylvania, as I live in North Carolina.
