Clinton County David Hare -- Wife -- Avis Who?

For many years -- I've got copies of material written in the 1920s -- David Hare's wife, and mother of at least the last six of his children, was Avis, whose maiden name was Wells/Welles. While there is considerable speculation about whether she was the mother of all of David children, there's been little speculation about her maiden name.

Last week an amazing document appeared: A marriage license attached to the great granddaughter of David Hare / granddaughter of David's son Daniel Hare / daughter of Daniel's son Charles P. Hare -- Hannah L. Hare. In 1892 Hanna married for the third time, to Charles Hollis, in Benzie County, Michigan. Her marriage license states her mother's maiden name.

I was delighted when I saw that something was filled in -- Charles Hare's wife, whose name was also Avis, was something of a mystery because no one seemed to know her maiden name. Not any longer. In 1892, her daughter Hannah stated that her mother's maiden name was WELLS.

I hve a feeling that sometime, years ago, someone mixed the two Avises. Picked Wells from Charles Hare's wife, rather than whatever was the maiden name of the earlier Avis.

The document is attached to Hannah L. Hare in my Ancestry tree, Guynup / Hare. Or if someone contacts me, I'll send the document as an attachment in email.

Hi Leah-
Have been working on the Hares who settled in Burgeo and also followed those who moved on to Cape Breton...I believe your Thomas to be the son of George Hare and Mary Kelly. If I have figured it out correctly he first married Elizabeth Buffett on 2 May 1871 and they had 4 children. After her death 2 Feb 1886 at Channel, he remarried to Elizabeth Cousins (haven't found the marriage yet!)They (or he) immigrated to Cape Breton in 1886 and together they had 6 children that I know of. Does this line up with what you have been able to unravel and do you have a marriage date and place for them. I have both their death dates but you probably already have those. Brenda

I am looking for information on the parents of Hineman (Hyndman) W. Hare,b. 1829 in WV, father of Thomas Ross Hare who was my great grandfather. In family records, it was written down that Hineman's father's name was Benjamin Hare, and Benjamin's father was Edward Hare. Jotted on the bottom of this piece of paper is the phrase (immigrated after 1800), but it is unclear whether that refers to Edward or Benjamin and I do not know where he immigrated from.
Any information would be welcomed.
Thanks!
Jane Ayers Phillips

Hello Diana,
Sorry for the delay in contacting you, but have had problems login on to Rootsweb/Ancestry.

Your message interested me regarding Sir John HARE, whilst I have no known link to him it is very likely we are connected as both our HARE families came from Taunton, Somerset, and I do have a little information on him because of that.

My initial research several years ago regarding Sir John and Hardelot was that the grounds had been turned into a golf course, and I thought the chateau had become a hotel?

I would be very interested indeed to learn more about Sir John and the Chateau, and hope we may communicate further.

I live not far from Bristol.

My very best wishes

Mike. mandl@talktalk.net
Sir John Hare

I live in Hardelot, a seaside resort in Pas-de-Calais, France. Just down the road from my house is a charming spot with a delightful little castle, built by Sir John Hare from Bristol. He lived there and Hardelot owes much of it's early development to him. The chateau was recently renovated by the local council and it is now a cultural centre which aims to share elements of British culture. I think it would be great to organise an exhibition about Sir John Hare and his achievements and to perhaps create some links with Bristol. Information, ideas and contacts most welcome.

Antoinette,

Hi I am related to Hare's in NJ. My Grandmother had a cousin named Anna Hare-born in the early 1900's. Her father was Russell Hare. My Grandmother always adored her cousin and looked up to her. Anna married young and I know the family was not too pleased with her choice of husband. She then vanished. My Grandmother always wanted to find Anna but sadly never did. I have tried searching but haven't had much luck. Do you know anything about your Hares from NJ?

Thanks,
Deirdre

I think I've found them for you. I believe they moved to the Henderson, Tennessee area... try looking at the following census records:

1850; Census Place: District 16, Henderson, Tennessee....

You'll find Spencer and Anna (which I think is Joanna), and Sarah (Sarah Ann?), John, Susan, Martha, Ransom, Francis (Frances Miriam?) , Louisa, Florina, James, and Claudius

Then in 1860...
1860; Census Place: District 20, Henderson, Tennessee

There is a Hare, J (possibly Joanna Garner), with W R (Ransom?), F M (Francis Miriam?), F (Florina?), and C (Claudius?)

and possibly Joanna's mother, Garner,Saras

next entry on the census has Hare, L (Louisa?)living with D & V Wallis and their family

there are also lots of Garners on the same census

Re: Polly Hare

I have no idea if Polly Hare is related to your Hares but I would thinks so. Polly Hare was probably bn in the late 1790's to very early 1800. I have never been able to find her mentioned anywhere except got a marriage certificate. Here is what I have on her, there is a Polly Hare who marries a Vincent Lockman (Jr.) in June 25 1817 in Jackson Co., IN. I have an Emily Lockman and a Patsy Lockman as their possible children. I think that Vincent died aft 1820 and before 1824 and Mary Ann "Polly" Lockman remarried. These are Not facts just my ramblings on this problem. I don't think she married Vincent Sr. and than divorced him, it just wasn't that easy to get a divorce in the early 1820's, it could take years. I came across this newspaper posting one time when I was looking to solve this problem, note the fact it is a Mrs Lockman not a Miss. Also Samuel Whedon was a respected member of the community and would not have married a divorced woman. I have looked through the other male Lockmans and none of them have died by this time or have male sons who have yet married and died. also Samuel Whedon is also difficult person to research. I hope this useful.
Marriage 1 Samuel WHEDON Jr. b: 1767
•	Married: 03 AUG 1824 in Jackson Co. IN
•	Note:
•	||Article in Geneva NY Gazette Oct 26, 1824:
•
•	MARRIED
•	In Brownstown, Indiana, on the 4 of August last, by S.
•	Stanley, Esq Samuel Whedon, Esq formerly
•	of this town, to Mrs. Mary Lockman, both
•	of Brownstown.
