Hi Patricia,

I have just discovered my Hares – Shipham ancestry. I descend from Samuel Hares and his wife Susan Wookey, their son Israel Hares and his wife Mary Ann Collins, and their son George Hares who emigrated to Scranton, Pennsylvania. Israel and family moved to Brynmawr, Wales in the late 1840s, although the family eventually took up residence in nearby Nantyglo. I will be examining parish registers for St. Leonard’s this weekend to help confirm certain dates and lineages. I would certainly be interesting in seeing your own research on this family so perhaps we can compare notes.

Although it is only weeks old, I have already created a web site at:

http://thomasgenweb.com/hares.html

I look forward to hearing from you!

Cheers,

Jeff Thomas
jltbalt1@comcast.net
I have many Hares in my tree - hailing from Shipham originally, and then by mid-19th century, largely based in Crews Hole.

Any other Hares researchers with the same lines out there?

Patricia
Hi Jane, cannot help with Robert Hare, but would appreciate anything you may be able to impart on Gorst and the plantation, as I am currently trying to see how he fits into my Gorst family from Lancashire UK., and anything might help. There is also a Gorst locality, but on the other side of the island.

You could also try Joan Leggett of Scotland trini@tenacity.uk.com who was b.Trinidad and is apparently knowledgeable of the island and its history. She is researching the Gorsts also.

Regards
John Williams

HARES - St Vincent

I need information on the ancestors of Robert HARES (my g.g.g.grandfather). He was a Colonel, Commanding Kings Company in 1828 (on the island of St Vincent, West Indies) and at some time was an Overseer on "Mr Gorst's Plantation in Layou", St Vincent.

Robert HARES married Martha BUCHAN on August 13, 1800, in St Vincent. Their children were: Susannah Maria, Charles James, Eliza Ann, Walter Morrison, Henry, William, Isabella, Washington Clifton, Frances Ann, Edward Gurley, and Harriet Leanora (all born between 1802 and 1825). Also possibly had a son Thomas Robert.

I believe Robert had a brother: John HARES. Thomas Robert may have been John's son.

Jane Peake (ysenora@hotmail.com)
