My husband and I are trying to find the Hardwoods of Barbados family. Richard's grandmother's name was Edith Harewood. She did have siblings; however, we do not know their names. She married Joseph Parry and had one son named Richard Parry for which my husband was named.. She left Barbados at a young age. My husbands father Richard died at the age of 56. My husband was 9 years old at the time of his father's death; therefore, he does not have a lot of information on family history.

Does anyone have a family tree that shows an Edith Harewood? She would have been born in the late 1800's.

Hi Juliette,

Do you have the names of your Harewood granparents? I suggest asking family members if they have any family bibles, wills or photos. This always generates conversation.

The archives in Black Rock is the best place to start looking for records and you can follow this up by requesting birth, death and marriage certificates at White Park in St Michael's.

Hope this helps.

Yvette

Dear All,

I am also descended from the Harewood line. I have managed to establish that the Harewoods are originally from St Phillips and my line ended up in Christ Church.

I have just visited Harewood House in Leeds, and up North they call it Harwood. No mention of it being built on sugar or slavery.

Does anyone have a Drusilla harewood in their tree?
Your inquiry interests me because it apparently ends where my family tree begins. I am a Harewood from Brittons Hill. My father was Evan Harewood, born in 1899 in Brittons Hill to Samuel Harewood & Christiane (Bynoe) Harewood. Samuel had six children - Christiane, Gladys, Louise, Cyril, Evan and Ernest. Funny, you also mentioned "Bynoe". My paternal grand-mother was a Bynoe.

I am not sure where you are located, but the Archives in Barbados, situated in Black Rock, can produce records of everyone born in the island from about the early 1800's. I have not been able to locate official documents of birth, marriage or death prior to 1800.

According to the best research, the Harewood family name was started in the mid 1700's by a rich English nobleman of the Lascelles family who married a mysterious local woman named "Janet". He was the 1st Earl of Harewood. A lot of interesting history, too lengthy to include here, is connected to the Harewood name. You may contact me directly at orleyh@yahoo.com or you may initiate your own research project to trace your ancestors; the Internet is full of information about our family tree. Also, as you may or may not know, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has secured a very comprehensive record of human activity in the Caribbean from Slavery to the present, of course, with Great Britain's help. You may access their website for more information.

I am trying to trace the Harewood side of my family. My grandfather, Thomas Harewood, was born in 1894 in the Belfast workhouse to a Sarah Harewood. From then on, Sarah seems to have disappeared. Thomas became a tailor and moved in with the Quinn family. In 1901 he lived with Elizabeth Quinn and is marked down as her stepson (she is a widow). In 1911, he lived at 55 Bendigo Street, Co Down. Thomas was christened as Harwood and continued to use Harwood on the 1911 census, although was known as Harewood, buried as Harewood and used Harewood as his son's surname.

I am at a loss as to how to continue research into this side of my family as not much seems to make sense. Can anybody help?

Thanks,
Louise.

I have a suggestion on how you may be able to trace back behind your brick wall and tie up with your Harewood ancestors in England. Our group of private Harwood researchers in five countries works with Y-DNA testing -- the simple cheek-swab test for Harwood-surname males -- to trace different Harwood families back to their origins in the United Kingdom and before. We have over 30 Harwood and similar surname testers, including several UK residents, and they trace back to different areas in England, including Lincolnshire, Sussex, Surrey, and so on.

If you have a Harwood-surname male relative who would be able to do the test, we can see if he matches any of our Harwood profiles, both now and as new testers join our program each month. More information about our Harwood testing can be found on our Harwood Family History Y-DNA Study website at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Harwood Family History Y-DNA Study

Please email me at the address on the website if you have any questions or if you are interested in learning more about Y-DNA testing for Harewood family history research and tracing.

In that case you may find that your tester actually matches closely to a tester with a different surname, and you may be able to find out from the matching tester where his family lived in the UK around the time Thomas was born.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if you are interested in learning more about the potential of Y-DNA testing for family history research and tracing.
Hi,

I have no idea where my Irish Harewoods come from. I have only been able to get as far back as my great grandmother, who was a Sarah Harewood and who gave birth to my grandfather, Thomas Harewood, in 1894 in the Belfast workhouse. His father was stated as 'Unknown'. As far as I know, Thomas was an only child. I have been unable, so far, to trace further back than that.

My father (James Harewood) was also an only child and moved to England as a teenager and we have no other Harewood relatives that we know about in either England or Ireland.

I have hit a brick wall when it comes to tracing the Harewood side of my family. I am hoping one day to get back to Ireland to try and discover sopme more. I'll let you know if I find anything,

Louise Harewood.

I'm interested in your Irish Harewood family. I work with an informal group of Harwood family researchers, some of whom trace back to William Harewood Sr. of Thurlby, Lincolnshire, who left a will ca. 1565. His descendants dropped the e, and his great-grandson William Harwood was governor of Martin's Hundred Colony at Jamestown, Massachusetts ca. 1622.

Incidentally, a descendant of Wm. Harewood Sr. of Thurlby wrote a book in which he asserted that WH Sr. was a descendant of Hereward the Wake, the first Harwood.

Do you have any idea whether your Irish Harewoods are related to this Lincolnshire Harewood family? Any idea how long your Harewoods have been in Ireland, and where they came from in England?
Hello,

My great grandmother was Delcina Small, who is mentioned in the original post. If we are indeed talking about the same Delcina Small from Barbados, then there are a lot of family that are descended from her in the US, and UK. And there are some people with the surname Harewood.

Write back!

Thanks.

Hi,
I still haven't got any further back than my grandfather, who was born in the Belfast workhouse in 1894 to a Sarah Harewood (father left blank). My grandfather stayed in Ireland (Wicklow area) until he moved to the Uk with my father in the 1960s.

I would love to find out some more information on Sarah Harewood but not sure how I can without actually being in Ireland (I live in Switzerland now)!

Harewood is a very unusual name in the UK/Ireland though so I am still hoping I'll find something.

Louise.

Hello there. I know I am about two years late, but I am responding to your thread about Harewoods. Actually, I had intended to start a Harewood club myself on the Internet and this is why my research led me to this site.

I can remember when my name was the ONLY Harewood in the Barbados Telephone Directory, and this was only about fifty years ago. Now, we have page after page after page.

I am a descendent of some lighter skinned Harewoods of Brittons Hill. My father's mother, whom he called Aunty Ellen was one of the local whites from the Scotland district and she had six children - Gladys, Louise, Chrissy, Ernest, Cyril and my dad Evans. When I first arrived in the US, where I presently reside, I got a call from someone who said he was President of the Harewood clan, and if I was indeed a Harewood, I must be from Barbados, where ALL HAREWOODS ARE RELATED, and descendants of one Earl of Harewood who had got fresh with a native girl.

I have done some research myself into the Harewood origins which I am quite willing to share with the group. Is this an authentic Harewood group, or shall I start my own?

My Great Grandmother's name was Florence Moore; she had a sister called Rose. Florence had three children. However the name "Harewood" comes from my Great Grandfather - his name is unknown. He had one known sisters Katherine, and a brother, George. We think my Great grandmother was born in the city. I think they are from the Black Rock area.

Best regards

I am also interested in tracing my family history. My Father is Kenrick Harewood. He was born in Spring Farm St. Thomas Bardados. He now resides in Montserrat. My Grandmother's name was Rosita Harewood and my grandfather was Charles Harewood "CharlieLord." He worked in a sugar cane factory in Barbados. They are both deceased. My father's siblings are Gustavus, Marion, Eulyn, Muriel. I can try to get more in formation for you. I presently reside in the USA. Hopefully, this information will lead somewhere.
