Hi, Joan! Thanks for the info. I believe Michelle Morris (Drage) may be related to my Drage line. The Kirby connection is my belated husband's. I don't think there's any relation to Kathy Kirby, but who knows? Since I can't get in touch with Michelle, I don't know if there's any connection to Jonathan Morris, except maybe on Michelle's husband's side.
Take care. Sue

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me. I have been looking for more information on my grandad. His name is John Alfred Hargreaves, born apparently 13 April 1901 and Died 1973. We have his marriage certificate to Grace Ockendon and his death certificate (died in Kent) but no birth certificate and no known other brothers, sisters etc. although we think there were others. He apparently ran away from home (could be around Beverley, Yorkshire as he named one of his houses this) when he was 12 and joined the army as his dad was a violent man and his mum (we have no name for her) ran away when he was 10. I have no clue who his mother was. His birthdate is not on ancestry and so now I am wondering if he made this up. He would never talk about his past. I have written to the war records pensions as we know he received a pension from the Coldstream Guards. Any advice or pointers would be so helpful to finally solving this mystery. Thanks.

I came across your post. I am researching family from Malden, and have been looking at the Hargraves/Hargreaves family.

I am currently looking at William Robert Hargreaves born May 1832 in England, and arrived in the US in 1854. He married Sarah McClaren about 1855 and resided in Malden.

They have 8 children born between 1861 and 1881.

I was wondering if you found any information. Perhaps they are brothers. I will continue to research, but I have not been able to find any other Hargreaves in Malden during that time. The spelling varies from Hargraves to Hargreaves.

-Deb
deborah_redley@comcast.net

Alice Hargreaves, (1914) Bradford, Yorkshire, England

Hi. My mum was Alice Hargreaves, (1914) Bradford. She spent all her school holidays in the Blackpool area. She could never explain the relationship of those she stayed with. So I take it, that the relationship / connection was complicated and difficult for a childs understanding.

Alice said she met Reginald Dixon, regularly while staying in Blackpool. He was the (Tower Organist), and because of the relationship, Alice was able to go into Blackpool Tower to hear him play.

Alice's father was Fred Hargreaves (1891 Bfd. son/of Richard Hargreaves and Mary, nee Hodgkins. Beatrice (1893) Preston, Lancashire. Apart from Beatrice, all the siblings were born in Bfd. Fred died in 1917 W.W.1. I suspect that was the reason why Alice spent school holidays with extended Hargreaves family. Freds widow, Phyllis, nee King, encouraged the visits to Blackpool. And the relatives were not hers. But visits to Blackpool stopped about 1923 when Alice was 9yrs.

Alice never understood why the visits stopped. I've not found the Hargreaves easy, but does any of this sound familiar.

If this relates to the earlier post re. Edna Drage. I can only place 1 Edna in my mums life, and that was an Edna Wade (1916)Bfd. Edna married 1stly. Waddington, 2ndly. Bricklebank. Should Edna be an inherited family name, Could this link to the Hargreaves in your tree, and Edna Drage?

Hello John, Thank you for responding. It's nice to meet a new relative. I have one picture of Romena. She was beautiful.
A while back I corresponded with Paul Reichert. He is I believe the grandson of Rosetta (Bogart)Reichert. He is in his 80's and lives near Lake Erie. I have not spoken with him in about five years.
Are all of the Hargreaves still in Ohio? It would be nice to know where they are today.
I have a brother John and a sister Diane who live in Florida. My parents are both deceased.
I would love to have a picture of Romena. Can you tell me anything about her?
So there was Ralphert, Rosetta, Romena Madge and one child died very young, I think Maude.
Sally

Hello Jim

What you need to do is get your parents marriage certificate which will give you your HARGREAVES grandfather's name and occupation.

You can then use the information to search for your father on the census (if he was born before 1911) and to get his birth certificate to get his parents' names. His death certificate will have his birthdate and place of birth if he died after 1969.

Some good websites for Lancashire (free) are OPC - www.lab-opc.org.uk which are transcriptions of parish registers and the LAncsBMD site www.lancashirebmd.org.uk which are the registrars indexes - but for teh Accrington Area (Hyndburn) have the mother's maiden name on from 1837 and also have age at death from 1837.

Fiona (also with ancestors from Accrington and Blackburn)

Family Knowledge - Fred HARGREAVES of Accrington or Blackburn area of Lancashire, England 20C

Hi there, would there be a chance of family connection with the my ancesters from the Accrington/Blackburn area in England. My father was called Fred Hargreaves and he married a Vera Stott from Yorkshire, Barnsley I think is right. He had an uncle Harry and his father had a haulage buisness and went to live in the isle of man to dodge taxes, but most of life happened before I came on the scene so I don't really know too much about anybody. I know that my mother was a maid at my granddads house when my Father Fred Hargreaves (the son of my grandfather)got her pregnant. My grandfather to prevent the shame and insult of having an illegitamate child in his family ties, then forced my mother and his son to marry so the child would be born within wedlock. that child was my older brother George Arther Hargreaves, next came my sister Mary Hargreaves, who later became married to a Terry Roche of the Raf,then came me James Hargreaves. I was always told that I was named after my Grandfather, but which? And next I found that the one that I had grown up beleiving to be my Grandfather was not, and that that my Mothers father had committed suicide because he was Epileptic. My grandmother from my mothers side said that she was dumped on a doorstep at birth and brought up by an old lady up to being about six then she was signed over to the workhouse to live and worked in the bobbin mill. Basically I'm stuck with ancestry unless somebody can help me, Do I fit into your Hargreaves tree at all, hope to hear from you best wishes jim

Hi, Thank you for your offer. You could send it to me and I would see that my siblings get copies. Please let me know if you would be willing to do this.
Thanks,
Mark

You are very welcome. I would like to return the letter either to a local historical society and/or family member but only if any and all family members here (or elsewhere) can agree. Any suggestions?

Well, all I can say is it was quite a shock to see a letter from my dad written 46 years ago & during the war. I am so glad you posted it and I was able to find it. It would be great to know the connection, but my dad has passed and the Alzheimer makes it not possible to get the information from your mom. I have printed a copy of the envelope and letter. Thanks again!

It very well could be. My Mom's Alzheimer's is so severe at this point, that I can't ask her. In fact, I didn't find this letter (or the ones my Dad wrote) until I was cleaning out the basement and found a box in the bottom of a metal cabinet. It was with other boxes that had used candles in them, so it was by the grace of God that I opened this one and found these letters!

Or is it possible you mom wrote to people or a person in the service as a pen pal type thing to keep up the spirits of those overseas? I do recall hearing about this type of activity.

Okay, so here's my question -- do either of you have any idea how he would "find" my Mom in Wallingford, CT and end up corresponding with her? We don't have any direct family connections with Massachusetts. The only possible connection of which I can conceive is that my Uncle Vernon Schumacher (my mom's brother) married Antonia (Toni) Grace Holtei who was born in Boston, MA in 1919. My Mom didn't have any siblings in the service, but I suppose your Dad's unit might have had someone else from Wallingford in it and maybe they passed my Mom's name and address on.

This is my Dad's letter alright. I recognize the handwriting. I am Mark's sister. My dad married Dorothy Atkinson in November 1944. They had four children: Thomas (1949), David (1950), Ruth (1952) and Mark (1954). Thank you for posting this.
