I am beginning my research and need some help! My grandfather, Cecil Hargrove (b.1926)was the son of Alex Zander Hargrove and Katie Lee Wales. My great-great grandfather was Joseph Hargrove and Johnnie Mac (or Mae?)Watkins. I was always told by my grandfather that there was Indian blood in our veins but I can't seem to be able to verify that so far. I'd appreciate any history/connections I could get.

Starkey Hargrove, Lawrence Co, MS Probate Record

I have received the Probate Records from Lawrence County, Mississippi for Starkey Hargrove and wanted to share. I am sure there are those that have seen these but there are many more that haven't, and also it raises many questions for me. To start the probate spans the years from 1846 to 1857. There are NUMEROUS names and I know that many people are working this line so maybe we can figure OUT who's who. I am tied to this line by Starkey's daughter Susan who married James F. Murray. Susan is my G-G-grandmother. I don't know how to start giving information in an organized way so I will just jump in. The file number is Lawrence County, Mississippi, Box 38 Case 5807. On the 27th of April 1846 Thomas Jefferson Ross makes a petition to the court saying the Starkey died intestate (meaning no will was made by him). There is a bond by Thomas Jefferson Ross making him administrator to the estate. 2 men signed with him. One, John H. Cowan 9 who is I think the court clerk), and Stephin Herrin.(his mark) This is dated 27th of April 1846. Thomas was his son in law, married to his daughter Martha Ann. Looks like next is a petition dated 30 of April 1846 on behalf of Stacy Hargrove, widow of said deceased. This is Stacy Bell the final wife of Starkey. It is VERY hard to read, but it list three men, David Langston, Absolom Sheppard, and James M. Stanfill are adding their names to ask to be made commissioners for making inventory of estate. Also on that day a Petition was filed for the sale of his personal property "for the payment of debts and the distribution among the heirs of said Starkey deceased". The inventory is listed the same 30th day. In it, it states that they met on the 29th at his place and took inventory. The inventory is very long, but one of the thing listed that made me giggle was "one lot of cheers" Is this some kind of whiskey/spirits? Anyway the total comes to $367.37. OK, here is the first question for me......There is a document here saying the these guys got together and made a true accounting of said estate, so on and so forth with the legal stuff, but at the bottom these men put their signatures and a William A. Langston signed and sealed it.Is he the Justice of the Peace or.. later in 1857 there is Citation that list he is the HUBBY of a Sarah Elizabeth. WHICH DAUGHTER IS SHE? and which wife is her mamma? AND is he the JP or son in law or BOTH? Now back to the papers. On that same day the 30th, (seems like a lot happened on that day, they were not wasting any time huh?), 2 additional petitions were filed. The first one is for Stacy to have a years worth of provisions out of the estate. The document list the death date for Starkey as the 16th of April 1846 at his residence in said county. (Lawrence) Then the second one brings more questions for me..It is a petition for minors to be appointed guardianship. Let me type the EXACT words that are written.....THE UNDERSIGNED MINOR HEIR OF STARKEY HARGROVE LATE OF SAID COUNTY DECEASED BEING OVER THE AGE OF FOURTEEN YEARS WOULD RESPECTFULLY REPRESENT UNTO YOUR HONOR..." that is where the paragraph ends. Next paragraph is mostly legal stuff but one sentence says "THAT THEY AND EACH OF THEM ARE ENTITLED TO A DISTRIBUTION OF THEIR FATHERS ESTATE...." but where FATHERS is written there is a ^ symbol inserted and the word GRAND is written in, making it seem to say GRANDFATHER????!?!?!?!?! 2 children made their mark, one Sarah Hargroves and James Hargroves. Maybe is this the Sarah Elizabeth that grows up during the span of this estate being probated and marries the man William A. Langston? Hmmmmm? So now there is a paper that says "April TERM" 1846, but filed 24th of May 1846. It is a report made by Thomas, to the estate..regarding promissory notes. Many are listed, and the names, ( best i can read) and amounts, first, Joseph? J. Weems, 72.00 made payable JAN 1844, second John J. Weems, 82.00 made payable 12 DEC 1842, Willis Griffith, 268.00 made payable 15th Jan 1846, fourth, John D. Buncan ? Binen ?, 240.00, payable 26 Jan 1846, fifth, John Sharps? Shanks? Shorts? for 20.25 payable on March 25 1843, sixth, A. A. Sheppard for 9.00 25th OCT 1844. That is all of them listed. Following that time period is the next filing on 6th of June, 1846. It is an inventory for Stacy Bell for the one years provisions she needs...150 lbs of bacon, 8 bushels of corn, 1/2 barrel of flour, 15 lbs of coffee, 20 lbs, "shugar" (sugar), 25 lbs lard, 1 bushel salt, 12 lbs tobacco. The next to follow is the sale of personal property of the estate inventory...it spans three and half pages, and I will list the names of each person only once, even if the might have more than on entry...here is goes..
J EVANS
STACEY HARGROVE (STACY BELL, WIDOW)
P W ELMORE
S HERRING
M B CANNON
J M STANFILL
W A LANGSTON
T J CARLISLE ( THIS I THINK IS THOMAS WHO IS THE FATHER OF ELIZABETH CARLISLE ONE OF HIS WIVES AND THE MOMMA TO SOME OF THE CHILDREN)
MARTHA ROSS ( MARTHA ANN, HIS DAUGHTER)
W G ALEN
T W SHEPPARD
A A SHEPPARD
J W BUCKLEY
J EVANS
R BENNETT
J S PATTERSON
W M GRAY
T W WILLIS
SAMUEL HERRING
E O SANDERS
I would like to note here for history sake, that J. W. Patterson got "1 bible...4.00" I don't know if this was a family bible or something else, but I wanted that to be out on the internet so someone might help locate or tie it back to here. There is report with it saying that they had the sale and three more promissory notes came forward but that they are doubtful. They are 1) Willis Griffith 218.00, 2) John D. Brown, 240.00, 3) John Sharp 20.85. Also it states that Stacey wants her part of the estate in cash NOW. Well, after that is a time of about 2 months, for the next document is dated Aug 24th 1846 named "Report for additional Assets" I really don't understand this except for there is a man named Lawrence Schulthus and 93.00 was being fought out in court and it was being appealed in another court and the estate can not be closed because of this. Apparently this was nasty because the next set of papers continues in March 1857, about 11 years later! wow! On the 28 of March, 1857 Thomas started placing notice in the paper "Southern Journal" the paper clipping is attached to it. The notice ran 28 Mar, and the 4, 11, 18, 25 days of April 1857. the notice listed the names as follows: William, James, Sarah, and Milley Hargroves. Here is an idea, are these all the children of the same mamma, or just different siblings. AND why are they placing add's in the paper like they are "lost" or in unknown locations? On 24 March 1857 there is a Summons to Court issued in Simpson County, for SUSAN MURRAY, ( my Susan who married James F. Murray) and Eliza Hargroves. On the 25th there is one issued in Lawrence for "ELIZABETH LANGSTON, WILLIAM A LANGSTON HER HUSBAND - NANCY WHITE- MARY HARGROVES AND HARDY HARGROVES" but this is where ii is confusing, on the back it says "EXECUTED ON SARAH LANGSTON AND W. A. LANGSTON HER HUSBAND AND HARDY HARGROVES, NANCY WHITE AND MARY HARGROVES" Is the Elizabeth and Sarah listed the same person so her name would be Sarah Elizabeth. On the 28th day of April 1857 the estate was final and the total estate was accounted to be $573.00. I don't know if what I have shared has helped some, confused others, and many others stopped reading a long time ago! I hope to hear from others soon. Thanks!
I am part of the Hargrove family of Vance Co., NC. My grandmothr was Emily Hargove and I have gotten as far as her grandfather who is Mack Hargove and is wife's name is either Susan or Sucky (as it is listed in some census records). I am also hitting a brick wall and can not get past Mack Hargrove. If you have any suggestions I would appreciate it, as I'm just getting started with my family tree. Thanks in advance.

Mitt (born around 1870's) was married to Ben Winn, (Bunkie, La.) and had 8 children. They eventually migrated to Houston, Texas, not certain of date.

Mitt was white (Irish) or mulatto and married a black man. The paper has extensive damage, but it would be of great value to anyone in the family. All I know is that the family lived around the Wichita, Kansas area. It appears the photo may have been taken sometime between 1885 - 1910. Please contact me for further information - I will give it to the proper family - shipping costs to be borne by the person who receives it.
