In the definitive History and Genealogy of the Harlan Family, compiled by Alpheus H Harlan and published in Baltimore in 1914, your grandfather, George Marion Harlan (b. March 2, 1858 in Cecil County, Maryland), appears on page 775 and is numbered 8803 in the Harlan schema.

He appears to be the sixth of eleven children of Stephen Porter Harlan (#4078) and Sarah Ailes Hanna.

Your grandfather is listed as "unm. 1887," which is still five years before the first marriage you mention.

You can access the Harlan Family in America website at http://www.harlanfamily.org/ and the Harlan Family Message Center at http://harlanfamily.org/messages/messages.htm

Sorry not to have gotten any farther than this, but I hope this is helpful.

John
My grandfather is George Marion Harlan, the son of Stephen Porter Harlan of MD. George Marion lived in Chicago IL for some time where he married Adah Isidora Briggs Ritter about 1893. It appears he may have been married to Hattie A Roberts from 26 Mar 1892 until 23 July 1892 when she died. The references in Chicago are to a George M Harlan & I am trying to determine if he is my George Marion Harlan. I am willing to share any information I have on his ancestors and descendants. Can anyone help me? Thanks!!!

Anyone know Aaron WIlbur Harlan, son of Wilbur Judson and Ada Amanda Dani of the Big Sur family? My great grandmother Margaret Williams’ sister Martha Addie Williams married Aaron WIlbur Harlan. Family history says they lived in Anderson Canyon and in 1927, Martha’s father and mother were visiting them. Sarah Williams (mother) fell off a cliff and was seriously injured and Blake Thomas WIlliams had a heart attack at the Harlan homestead and died in 1927 and I assume buried in the Harlan cemetery there as I can find no record of his burial. It would be logical if he died there with the remoteness of the area he would be buried there.

As already mentioned, The Harlan Family in America group reprinted the Alpheus H. Harlan in 1987. I believe they might now own the rights to the book, though both Google Books and InternetArchives.org have scanned, electronic versions of the original available for free download.

Contact The Harlan Family in America at http://www.harlanfamily.org/index.htm

They might be happy to have the CDs available. Besides there is a huge market through their site and the people who attend their reunions.

I have real problems with Jacob...two sets of info.one born 1810 and one born 1802. Both married Rebecca White. A Larry Rutledge(Rutledge Database) shows a son William H. Harlan (no B/D). Do I have two Jacobs or just one with wrong dates. What a mess. Try checking the Rutledge Database. Maybe you can pick up a trail. If so let me know. I'll do the same.
Good Luck to both of us. Jean

ps All my info shows Kentucky and Indiana for both. Can this be a coincidence?

I am looking for a Harlan line with a Maryland connection around 1790-1810 who had a son named Daniel.

Using the original, "Harlan Genealogy" compiled by Alpheus Harlan I believe my Harlan family to be decendants of James Harlan #11 b.

Does anyone know if Ruth Harlan (December 1834 to after 1900 census) is Ruth Lucas, husband to Henry Lucas (1820-before 1900 census)? This would make her the mother of Charles Henry Lucas (1867- before 1920 census), the husband of Nancy Elizabeth Maxey Lucas.

There is also a Jenesia Lucas in a census for the Lucas family in Bell County, Texas. Could that be another name for Ruth Lucas or a sister to Henry Lucas?

The Lucas side of my family is a brick wall and any help will be greatly appreciated.

Wow! This is awesome! I would love to see a picture of the house! I have been in TN twice in the last five years and have seen their graves, but had no idea where their farm was located.

My great-great grandmother was their daughter, Sarah Jane. She died at age 27 and her husband died not too long after that, leaving my great-grandmother an orphan. It took me a long time to piece together the family history, but I finally met my TN relatives five years ago. It has been an uplifting experience and opened the door to some marvelous kin.

I would appreciate any information you may have about this family and would love to know where the farm is located. If I were able to come back to TN (I live in MN) would you be willing to let me visit the farm? I would stay with the Clements in Hermitage Springs (Sarah Jane married Leroy Clements). I assume you are not related to the Harlans, just own the property now, is that correct?

If you would rather communicate via email, my email is fisher50@mchsi.com

I live on the farm once owned by Alexander & Priscilla Harlin. I have a picture of his old house that burned in the 1980's. Clay Harlin (their son) & wife Mary Comer owned it after they died and then Edna Hayes, Clay's daughter & her husband Vanus owned it after them. They are all buried in the Gamaliel Cemetery, Gamaliel, KY. I have a little info on them, probably the same stuff you have. How are you related?

Would like to contact distant relatives of Maude Temple Harlan born 22 Feb. 1875 in Pleasantville, Sullivan, IN. She was probably only child of Martha Ann Clark and a Mr. Harlan who might have been born in Kentucky. Other 2 children: May A. (Dovie) b. abt 1901 and John William b. 1904 in Massac Co. Maude became ill and went to El Dorado Springs, Cedar Co., Missouri to stay with mother-in-law, Mrs. Wm. Roseman. Maude died there Dec. 1906. Her husband and children ended up in Chico, California by 1910.

Maude's mother, Martha Ann Clark was born 1835 in Selvin, Warrick, IN, the dau. of James F. Clark & Mary.(maiden name not known). Martha was also married to Allen Stewart (1853) and Andrew McIntire (1859).

One child, Rhoda Ann Stewart b. 1854 - died 1884 was born to Martha and Allen Stewart. Children born to Martha & Andrew McIntire: James b. 1861, John Franklin b. 1863, Mary b. 1866 (md.Baker) & Lucinda b. 1866 (md. Dempsey)

I have a picture of Maude Harlan & Charles Morse holding one of their children. There are no descendants left of this line and I would like to locate the descendants of Maude's half-siblings (Rhoda Stewart & the McIntire kids)to share this picture and to also update this part of the family tree. Would especially like to learn who Maude's father is and his ancestry.

What does the back of the picture say? Just the title you
already have written here?

My ggg grandfather was James harlan and he moved with a couple of sons after his spouse died from Indiana to the
Washington then Oregon area. Not positive of the year but
by 1900 he was in Oregon.

So even if this isn't part of my family traveling it is nice to see the picture and the way they lived.

Thanks for posting.

Lindsey
