Looking for a Harleston

I have a book that has the name John Harleston in it, with the date 1856 in it. It appears to a book about medicine. I would gladly give this book to a Harleston if you can tell me who he is.

Again, thanks for your reply. I understand that Edward Harleston was a politician, and that could account for my gg grandfather's name. Dianne Stancil Brown

With a birth date of around 1833 it is likely that Edward Harleston Stansell's grandmother rather than his mother was a Harleston. Harleston seems to stick around as a middle name for many generations in some families. According to the family tree that I have which does not trace any related families, prior to 1833 the women of the Harleston family of South Carolina married into the following families: Ball, Corbett, Moultrie, Huger, Quash, Scott, Smith, Reid, Rutledge, Broun. No one in our family has been the kind of genealogy enthusiast who traces every line so I can't guarantee that the list is complete. A family that one of these married could have acquired Harleston as a new middle name.

Returning to your original question, Edward Harleston of Pendleton's oldest daughter was born in 1827 so none of his daughters could be a mother in 1833.
Thanks for your reply. My gg grandfather was Edward Harleston Stansell/cil, b. abt 1833 in Eastatoe, Pickens County, but no one knows his mother's name, as she apparently died in the 1840's. Since my gg grandfather was the first born, some Stansell/cil researchers think his mother's maiden name could have been Harleston, as Edward Harleston was in that area at that time. We are grasping for straws, but it is a good theory. Edward Harleston Stansell/cil's father was William "Willis" Stansell/cil. Do you have any Stansell/cil connections in your family.
Thanks, Dianne Stancil Brown

Edward Harleston is my great great grandfather. He moved to Pendleton from the Cooper River rice plantation area north of Charleston about 1825. He moved back to Chareston in 1845 after having financial difficulties - probably a failed cotton crop. He was a widower when he arrived but married Anna Isabella Huger, a daughter of his neighor, Francis Kinloch Huger. They had three sons and seven daughters.

I have more information than I have time to write. Is there anything in particular that you are looking for?
