James Harp and Olive Scarborough were my GGGrangparents . Their daughter Nancy was my GGrandmother. Nancy's daughter Missie Adele was my grandmother on my father's side. I believe James Harp came to Georgia from North Carolina.

James Harp born 1818 in Kentucky moved to Lavaca Co., Texas

My sister an I have been researching our family and have run into a problem when it comes to our great great-grandmother's father. Her name was Susan McCabe (born Harp). His name is James Harp and he was born in 1818 in Kentucky. An 1850 Lavaca Co., Texas census shows that his father was from Maryland and his mother was from Kentucky. James married Julia Ann (also seen as Julianna) Thompson (from Kentucky) in Ft. Bend, Texas on May 18, 1841. One census also showed a family right next to theirs with the head of the family as, Catherine Thompson, a widow, from Kentucky. Her mother, perhaps? The ages were about right. Does anyone know who his family might be?

Hi...I've had your post printed out & sitting on my desk for some months now. Just in case you have not found out the info you were looking for, I went to a website (www.findagrave.com) and found that she is buried at Forest Hills Memorial Garden in Forest Park, GA. She is listed as Alice Joyce Tate Harp and her memorial # is 76968369 (you can search by this # or by her name). There is a picture of her gravesite and some biographical information so it appears the posting may have been added by a relative. Hope this helps!!

I have that his wife is Jane Razor but then at the Harp Cemetery in Franklin Co. KY, He is buried with a Mary Alice Bramlette. Which is correct or did he have two wives? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Cindy

My great great grandfather was Allen F. Harp who was in Barbour Co AL in 1850's, Pike Co AL in 1860 now Bullock Co AL. Allen migrated into AL from Harris Co GA in the 1840's. I have been trying to trace Allen back to a Harp family in GA pre 1840. Since Harris Co is close to Columbus area, do you run across the name Allen in your line? Any info on your Harp family might be helpful. Thanks

Hi - I just read your post. My father, Arthur Christopher Harp, was the son of Francis Marion Harp and Laura Lee (Lingo) Harp. I am just starting to try and trace my Dad's side of the family. Francis and Laura had (I believe) 11 children, my Dad being the youngest. Do you have any information on what country the Harp family came from? Thanks!

Hello Sandra, I read your message with great interest. I have researched Sarah Winslett and have found some of the same information that you have. It's nice to know that you are one of Sarah's descendants. My interst in Sarah was through Manning Harp, a resident of Monroe Co., AL. I will have to take a look at my records to see if we can further our research together.

I look forward to hearing from you again.

Pauline
Alabama

My name is Sandra Harrison Long. I am descended from Sarah Winslett, through Hiram Winslett, Ella Winslett Harrison, and Jesse L. Harrison.

Sarah seems to be a mystery person and I hope you can shed some light on her for me.

1850 - Listed on 1850 Monroe Co., GA Census, living in the
household of Tomas M. Harrup at age 14.
1855 - Sarah is named in Thomas M. Harrup's will dated
January 1855 as his granddaughter.
1860 - Living in household of Ariasto Harrup and Fleming
Harrup along with Martha Ward, 55, Sarah Wincelet,
28, and Marta Wincelet, 2.
1868 - Milledgeville, GA, June Term, 1868
Sarah Winslet in her own behalf, and as prochein ami
of her mother, Martha Ward, a lunatic, filed her
bill in Equity, in substance, as follows: Thomas M.
Harrup, the grandfather of said Sarah and said
Martha, on the 5th day of January, 1865,made and
executed his last will. Sarah said that no support
was provided for Martha, Lodusca, or herself.
(This is rather a long document. A copy of it can
be found on the web by typing in "Sarah
Winslett".)
1870 - Living in household of Harrups, and Martha Ward, 65,
Sarah Winchelett 35, seamstress, Martha Winchelett
12, Ella Winchelett 4, Hiram 1.
1880 - Hiram Winslit (Winslett) (Sara's Son) 39, is listed
as head of household, with Mary 29 (wife), Ernest,
Ella, and Minnie (children.)

As you can see,Winslett is spelled many different ways.
Also, I have copies of Hiram's death certificate and it
lists his father as John Winslett and his mother as Sarah Harp. I also have a copy of Ella's (Sarah's daughter) death certificate and it lists her father as Henry and mother as unknown.

I'm not sure where the "Ward" name comes in. Basically, I would like to find out the following:
- What was Sarah Winslett's real name - Winslett,
Harrup/Harp, or Ward?
- Who did her Mother marry and when?
- Who did Sara marry and when?

I would also like any further information on Sarah that you might have. And of course, I will be happy to share any that I have with you.

Thanks,
Sandra Long

How utterly exciting. I was searching for a Polly and Eliz Harp in Chesterfield and came across their tombstones. I felt that they were the ones. Now, that I found out she was called "Polly"....I am even more sure. Look carefully in Mt. Croghan, Chesterfield County, Sc during the 1850 census or 1860. I think it is the 1850 for John Miles b.1810, Jackson (erroneously called Jackson Harp; he was really Jackson Miles) and Hezekiah Miles. You will find Polly Harp and Eliz/Eliza (Male) Harp. I think that they are relatives of John Miles. Most interesting. It is very possible that Eliza or Eliz was short for Elijah because I have another Elijah in my tree who also had unusual spelling.

John Miles b.1810 lives beside his brother in Mt. Croghan, Chesterfield Co, SC. His brother is William Manning Miles b.1812. So, if you have trouble locating on ancestry John Miles due to their systems. Sometimes, I just pull up William and Nancy Miles and find John Miles next door. I descend from both brothers because their children married....yes, first cousins married.

I would love to know more about the Harp family in Chesterfield and would greatly appreciate your help.

John, William Miles had a sister also, Rebecca Jane Miles who married Nelson Turner Jordan. She is also a few doors down on census. Yes, I know McBee. Many of William Miles children moved into Jefferson from Mt. CRoghan.

More later! Let's talk!
Julie
Hmarshville @aol.com

Polly Harp was married to my g g grandfather, Pleasant Elijah Harp. I got her name off of my g grandfather's death certificate. His name was Pleasant "Pless" Elijah Harp, Jr. He was married to Eliza Jane Horne. He and Liza are buried at Hebron Methodist Church Cemetery, McBee, SC.

I'm not sure who Eliz is unless it was short for Elijah. I have been unable to find Polly's maiden name. Where did you find that she and Eliz are in John Miles household. I wonder if John Miles is a relative of her's as I have found no connection to any Miles on the Harp lineage.

All of my Harp family is from Chesterfield, SC and Anson County, NC. I have more info if you wish to share please e-mail to CMoodyM@peoplepc.com

Look forward to hearing from you.

I find Pleasant's grave. I am interested in Harp of Chesterfield Co. In 1850, Eliz and Polly Harp are in John Miles' household. They must have been relatives of some sort. I just do not find many Harps in Chesterfield Co, Sc. I wonder why. Do you know anything about the Harps of Chesterfield? My family lived in Mount Croghan, SC. Miles surname. There is this connection to the Harps.
Please respond.
Julie

Elizabeth Russian Harp was a widow and Elisha Hill was a widower for YEARS in the same church and community in middle Georgia. Actually, they had children married to each other. In like their last 10 years of very long lives they married each other--I find them first married when they were 70 years old. Elisha Hill died a little before Elizabeth, and he left her some things in his will. He noted that he had not promised her anything of his belongings, but she had been a good wife to him and he wanted to leave her something. He was a man of property who must have lived without a wife for at least 20 years before this later-in-life second marriage.

Thanks for that info. That does solve one little mystery for me. Everything I ever found said William Cullen Harp was married to Elizabeth Russian except for one source, which listed his spouse as Elizabeth Russian or Elisa Hill. I didn't know if that was a different name she was known by or if he was married more than once, but now it makes more sense. Elisa Hill was either Elisha mistyped or since he was her second husband maybe that's the name she went by after she married him.

Re: Alverine Harp location pre 1850?

I'm descended from Alverine's brother, Hubbard Harp. Those old census records just don't have much information because they don't list the names of members other than the head of household.
I show Alverine's wife as Nancy (no maiden name), and his parents as William and Sarah (Stanton) Harp. I show him as born in Kentucky. I got a lot of information from my Harp relatives years ago, before I was keeping good records.
I show Alverine would have had about 9 children by 1850, beginning with Thornton b. 1827 and ending with Tennessee b. 1849. The first four were maybe born in Kentucky, and the rest maybe in Tennessee (11 altogether) - or like my grandfather's siblings, they might have "alternated" between states ...
I have Thornton's wife and children, for some reason. I'd love to add your line from Daniel to my file - I don't have anything about Daniel's wife or descendants!
Meanwhile - I'll see if I can dig anything up.

Rod Hawkins

My dad has some pictures from way back but I haven't seen them for about 30 years and can't remember who they are. Ill have to dig them out and see. My mom has them so I'll have to look for them when I visit her next ( she lives a 100 miles away from us ). I would be suprised if there were any Boens and after 150 years unless they were labeled who knows who the people are. All the people who could tell me who's who in the pictures are dead. The questions we should have asked when we were young wern't asked and there are people in pictures that we have no clue who they are. When I look them up I'll contact you but it will be a couple of months from now ( hunting season ). If you get any info let me know.

A little late, but thank you for all the information. I researched the Meadow Massacre. Lots of stuff out there. Our Harps & Boens were lucky they made the right decision.

Do you have any pictures of the Harps or Boens? I would love to have a copy.
Thank you,
Revae

At this point I am totally confused as to weather my James Newton Harp belongs to Peyton or not. But I know that he married What we believe to be Nancy Caroline Nelson abt 1870 and they had children Monroe A, Mary J, Franklin, Charles and Ella. And we know that Ella was their child as they were listed on her marriage records! And that Monroe A was her brother as we have 2 of his children located with her in a census and then a newspaper article where Monroe A Harps boys years later reunited with her. Now as far back as we can tell at this point,We are not sure if James belongs to Peyton or to another Harp. I contacted a woman who swears that she has the bible records of James Cullen Harp and Jane Cavender and says that our James was not the son of Jane! But I have him in the 1850 census with his brothers and sisters in the home of James C Harp and his wife Jane Cavender. And also there were all kinds of Nelson's in the area during this census and then I followed them through the census in 1870 and the 1880 census and lost them after this point! So as to where James and Callie went I have no clue. But from what I can piece together at this point it looks like their daughter Mary J married William Ellis on 3-1893 in Walker co, GA as for Charles and Franklin I have not finished working on them to verify. But the last daughter Ella from what we found so far was married supposedly to a Wright? And then married a Harvey Cecil Bridgewater. and then to Jesse William Danner. As for Harvey and Jesse I can verify them as they were my family! And as for Monroe A we know he died in KY. Supposedly in Jefferson co, KY but I am still working on finding a obit or gravesite for him. And Ella and her husband Jesse Danner were my gr grandparents! I am still trying to figure out where this James belongs! But we do know that he had a brother Jasper W.H. Harp that stayed with Jane Cavender until her death and then he died at age 27. And his sister Margaret A b abt 1846 and brother Monroe A.b abt 1850. And from what I have found on the census records of Peyton then I would say that James could not be in 2 places at one time! So in this case I would say that this James is not the son of Peyton Harp and Nicey Bruce! But I cannot figure out how most of the children with James Cullen Harp and Jane Cavender have the same names and ages as the ones with Peyton in the census records! But I will take the info on Alexander and see if I can find a relationship somewhere along the line. As my question was if Peyton had the children in the 1860 census then how did he marry all but two of them in the 10 year span between censuses? Well keep in touch and let me know if you come across any more info on the James N Harp. And you need to connect with sideboard@aol.com he is a Ogleby that is related to the Peyton Harp family definitely! His name is Vic Thanks Vicki

James Newton was the son of Peyton & Nicey, right? My Hannibal did have 3 sons. Peyton Alexander died in Milledgeville, GA (1875 - 1963). Horace Walter (my ggrandfather born 1878 died in 1950. He was hit by a drunk driver while waiting for a bus in Atlanta, Georgia. George W. Harp (1880 - 1959) and wife Anna Partain are buried and most of their children, etc. live in Monroe Georgia, Walton County. George & Anna had several children (Robert Lee, Alexander, Ruth & Mary). This Harp family - Peyton & Nicey lived in Monroe County, Forsyth Georgia and there is a Harp's Crossing in Peachtree City, GA that I believe may go back to this family. They had like 13 children.

I show James Newton born 7 Aug 1841 married to Nancy C. Nelson, children: Monroe, Charlie, Franklin, Mary, Carrie.

It appears we do have a match.

Hi, Cousin. We live in Dallas, GA. Where are you from?

I have a little info for you as you may already have it by now! But I am working on the same family. as alexander was son of Peyton Harp and Nicey Bruce. I had the two sons but not george! I am descendaned through James Newton and his wife Nancy Caroline Nelson. That is if I have the right James Newton Harp! But if this coincides with your info I would be glad to hear from you. Thank You Vicki
