I am looking for the family of my father. My grand fathers name was Melvin Harrell, but at the time of my fathers birth it got changed to Herrell. I know that he served in the Phillipines during WWII and that is where he was buried. According to the census records that I have found he had two sisters by the names of Audrey and Betty. I believe that he was born in Chicago, but his parents were born in Indiana. I do know that during the 1970's there were some Harrells in the Harvey, Il area.

Thanks for the reply, I am just starting to work on the Harrell family on my grandmothers side, but will include Leslie in my searches. I have not been through all of the Harrell posts yet, but hope to start on that soon. Lessie may be short for Ulyses (?) also. I have also seen Jane Harrell on my grandfathers side (married to Blackmon Dollar)of the same generation so want to look into that too.
Thank you for your reply Jessica. Unfortunately I do not have an exact birthday, but we are guessing my James was born around the late 1830's to early 1840's. There is some discrepancy as to where his children were born....I have some court records showing they were born in Arkansas, Some court records showing Missouri and yet other records showing Indian Territory, which at that time could have been Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, a small part of Southwest Missouri & a small portion of Southeast Kansas.

According to family lore, James fought in the Civil War as a CSA Soldier. He was supposedly injured during the Civil War and married Sarah Ann Taylor after returning from Service. His two Children, Sarah Frances Harrell (b. 1875) and James Thomas Harrell (b. 1878) are the only two children we are aware of at this time.

James Thomas was my Great Grandfather and is buried in Mulberry, KS which is literally right on the Missouri border in Crawford County, KS which was part of Indian Territory before Kansas became a State. He was married to Agnes Viola(Foster)Harrell in Oklahmao City in July, 1911. Sarah Frances (Harrell) Harreld, was also married in Oklahoma City to Lewis N Harreld the following day. It is rumored that this was Sarah Frances' second marriage and that she fled to Oklahoma after her divorce, but I have yet to confirm that information.

As you stated, there are many Harrell's by the name of James. This has become quite overwhelming as many of these Harrell families have large families and carry on the family tradition of naming children with similar names to other family members. I tend to agree that we are not of the same line, but should you come across any information that may help me in my search, I would love to hear from you. Evelyn is Minnie's (deseased) daughter.

I have no records of Glycine Winship b. abt. 1919 Missouri. If you have any family data on her, I would love to add it to my records, for my wife and children.
Hi and sorry, it's taken so long to get back to you. From everything I've collected it seems that my James Harrell (whose full names was James Abram Garfield Harrell) never married. I can't say for certain if he fathered any white children though. For now, I would err on the side of caution and assume we're talking about two different men. I wouldn't be surprised if they were cousins however, because I've found that the names repeat quite often throughout the different family lines. Do you have an approximate birth and death date and do you know if he lived in East Feliciana all his life? Hope this helps. Feel free to email me at jessicabrown1@cox.net if you'd like.

My James Harrell was married to a Sarah Ann Taylor according to a death certificate I have for his son James Thomas Harrell. They had two children that we are aware of by the names of James Thomas and Sarah Frances Harrell. I am also struggling with researching my Harrell connection because of skeltons in the closet. Any help would be appreciated.

Do you know in which museum my grandpa's violin is displayed? In elementary school I played in 5th grade orchestra on my grandpa's violin. When my mother Glycene passed away in 1993 my dad gave grandpa's violin to my aunt Minnie. My mother accompanied her dad on the piano and they won a trophy playing together on the radio. I never met my grandpa, who passed away about 5 years before I was born. Always loved the stories and enjoyed my mother's piano playing.

Actually, my James Harrell was the son of Jarred Washington Harrell. I think Samuel was Jarred's brother. As best I can tell, the Harrell's never owned my ggrandmother's family. They became lovers, whether forced or by choice I don't know, well after slavery. My gggrandmother, Tennie Jefferson, bore James Harrell six children and there was at least one other black woman who gave birth to three children for him. I've tried connecting with some of his sister's descendants to see if they knew anything about James Harrell, but so far there has been no response. Some people prefer to keep their skeletons in the closet.

Don't know if you are still at this address but I will try anyway. James Harrell is probably the grandson of Levi Harrell. James father was probably Samuel Harrell. Levi brought his family and slaves from South Carolina believing they had settled in Miss territory. I am a descendant of some of those Harrell slaves of East Feliciana. My ggg grandfather Primus was sold to then Ouachita Parish in the part now known as Caldwell Parish. Some of them changed the spelling to Harrold or Harold.

They moved to Polk County, Florida some time in the 1920s because my grandmother was born in Winter Haven. When I was a child they lived in Mulberry, FL a neighboring town to Plant City.

One of his great uncles was a Hiram Harrell. Believe he was born in 1867. I do not know much else on him.

I am still working on Hiram Percy's lineage. So...I hope this helps.

Re: Zachariah Harrell

I too descend from Hardy and Barbara Harrell of Jefferson County, but through their daughter Mariah who married Robert Thomas there 1831. I believe that Hardy probably was the son of Zachariah Harrell and his wife martha Everett. They were in Wilkes County in 1780s, then that portion of Wilkes was cutoff to form Warren County in 1793. Zachariah and Hardy were neighbors along Rocky Comfort Creek. Zachariah died their circa 1797. Then Jefferson was formed 1796 from Warren. Am trying to understand all of this.

From Barbara Harrell's will, her daughters are named, but not her sons. Am still trying to determine which of the people named in her will were her children. Some of them are easy, but others are not so clear. I estimate that Hardy Harrell was born circa 1765 and married and started having children circa 1785. In 1830 census Hardy is listed as 60-70 years old, placing his birth year between 1760 and 1770.

Please reply to me at maports@comcast.net

Willie Weaver Harrell was born in 1893 and his older brother James Joseph Harrell was born 1890. They had a sister named Martha Ethel Harrell born 1896. Lucy remarried Uriah Austin sometime during the early 1900's. Not sure what happened to her first husband, I believe his name to be Reuben Harrell. They lived in Aulander, Bertie County, North Carolina. I have been unable to find a birth/death certificate on either Reuben
nor Lucy.
Lela Lillian Harrell Leissner -- Obituary

Mrs. Leissner's obituary was in the Panama City (FL) News Herald. I am not related to Mrs. Leissner, nor do I have additional information. I am posting the obit for interested researchers. Note that Mrs. Leissner was 103! Her sister died three days after her at the age of 105!

*****
Lela Lillian Harrell Leissner died on Oct. 5, 2011, at St. Andrews Bay Skilled Nursing Facility in the presence of her three "Angels in Disguise" India Belisle, Paula Pettit and Bernidene DeWitt. Lela was born Jan. 25, 1908 in Mitchell County, Ga., to John Bassett Harrell and Mary Anna Stephens. She had eleven siblings, all of which preceded her in death except one sister, Elizabeth Harrell Carrigan, who passed away on Oct. 8, 2011 in Montgomery, Ala., at the age of 105.

Lela was a retired Civil Service switchboard operator. She was transferred from Maxwell AFB, Ala. to Goodfellow AFB, Texas where she met the "love of her life", F.F. (Rube) Leissner, a teacher and football coach. They had 10 years together. When he died, she moved back to Montgomery, but soon moved to Panama City to be near family. She joined Northside Baptist Church and Homemakers Sunday School Class. She loved people. Her prayer each day was to help someone else. She loved Wal-Mart on 23rd Street so much that she went everyday. She was made honorary Wal-Mart Associate. She loved her birthdays.
