James C. Harriott, husband of Mary Ahrens, was born 15 July 1842 and died on 31 Jan 1920. His death certificate indicates that he was the son of Samuel Harriott and his wife Madeline Hamilton. Thus Rachel would also be the result of this marriage. Samuel Harriott would be a brother to James C. Harriott who married Catherine Niven. James C. Harriott is buried in fairview Cemetery in Staten Island, New York.

No evidence that there was a first wife of James C. Harriott who married Catherine Nivens.

The Greenwood Cemetery now has a search engine that turned up a large number of Harriots earlier this evening. I just went back to get the goodson James C Harriott and the search engine seems to have shorted out for the night. I got there through ancestry.com trying to track down my Joseph Harriott sailmaker. the Site page is:
http://www.green-wood.com/

I've connected to James C Harriott 1807 to 1867 in NY, but nothing absolutely certain makes him what my tree says is my 1st cousin 5x removed. I am definitely descended from Jane E Harriot but am not sure if there is sufficient documentary evidence to show that Jane is the Jane Harriott who is the daughter of William Harriott who is the brother of you Samuel who is the father of James C. Jane is the only one who fits the bill and I hope to find more documentary evidence of all these connections. Jane married a sailmaker Frederick Walden and they are my great great great grandparents.
From NY marriage records at pilot.familysearch.org
Groom's Name: Robert F. Walden

Bride's Name: Cecilia Seaman Johnston

Marriage Date: 09 Jan 1898
Marriage Place: Manhattan, New York, New York
Groom's Father's Name: Frederick A.
Groom's Mother's Name: Jane E. Harriott

Tom Walden
twalden27@gmail.com

James C. Harriott of New York/Brooklyn

James C. Harriott (1822-1875) was the son of Samuel Harriot and his wife Ann. He married Catherine B. Nivens around 1846. She died in 1906. Records indicate they had no issue. New evidence suggests that James C. Harriott may have had a previous marriage and had at least two children -- (1) Rachel B. Harriott born about 1843 and married Javan Prevost (2) James C. Harriott born about 1845 and married Mary Ahren. They had two children Florence E. Harriot and James Cleveland Harriott who married Emily Whitaker. Looking for info on any of these families... particularly unidentified first wife of James C. Harriott.

Do you have anything about a Cornelius Harriot who was born in 1872 in Trinidad? He gave an embroidery sampler to Harriet Roper abt. 1955, and I am trying to research the sampler. It is dated 1844 and has the name Polk on it. A note on the back says it is a Harriot family sampler. I can't figure out if the girl's name was Polk, she lived in Polk Co. somewhere, or she was honoring James K. Polk who was president at the time.
Thanks!

Janet

Harriott, Cuba, 1925-1928

I am trying to trace a long lost uncle by the name of Leonard Harriott who was born in Cuba around 1925 to father Rufus/Hubert Benjamin Harriott who later returned to Jamaica. I would also like to find the birth record for my late mother born Daphne Harriott in Cuba in 1928. The name might have been misspelt as "Harriett" which I found was the case for my grandfather Rufus and great grandfather Hubert in Jamaica. But for earlier generations the birth records have the correct spelling of "Harriott." Any help would be appreciated.

You could be related to my family. I am building a family tree online for the Harriott Family Jamaica. My grandfather on my mother's side was Hubert Benjamin Harriott. He was born in 1898 in Thornton, St Elizabeth, and his parents were Hubert Benjamin Harriott (same name) and Esther Harriott (not sure what birth dates). I can check my family tree for connections if I know your parents names, the parish they were born in and their date of births. My grandfather had two brothers and a sister. I am really trying to find out more about my great, grandparents, Hubert and Esther and their parents whose names I don't yet have!

I recently discovered that I am descended from Jane E. HARRIOTT married to Frederick A. WALDEN or WALDRON a sailmaker in Brooklyn & NYC IN THE 1800'S.
Jane born somewhere between 1805 and 1811 in NY.
son Robert F. WALDEN. There is a Warren Harriott and a George who may be brothers or cousins in NYC. The WALDEN line is confused with a WALDRON line and they are all sailmakers and they may be the same bunch. Robert F. Walden b . 1836 NY married Ellen CHRISTOPHER and had son Joseph Russell WALDEN. After Ellen died Robert married late in life Cecilia Seamans Johnston.
Jane seems to have been recorded living in 1860 with another family in NYC

Hi
Thanks for responding. All I know about Frog Firle Farm is that Frog Firle Farm was owned by the Earl of Burlington, the then Lord Cavendish. Henry Pagden tenant farmed Frog Firle Farm with 517 acres from 1816 to 1860. There were other parcel of lands in Hailsham and Pevensey. His son, James, (he of the first White Horse of Litlington) took over in 1860. However it appears that this was only for a period of one year.

As you say there is a section and a poster in the book "Aspects of Alfriston" by AW showing when a barn was burnt down in 1834 on Sunday 2nd November. And also a clip regarding the White Horse and states James Pagden and brothers raised the first horse and then William T Ades and friends created the 2nd which is still kept up.

Frog Firle Farm has since been entrusted to the National Trust, although no one is quite sure about Tile Barn. It would be interesting to find out who owns that. It requires some work on it to make it habitable. There are no mains running to it (checked on GIS)

I would welcome any further info on Frog Firle to add to this story.

Not much I'm afraid but hope it is interesting.
Regards
Lea

Hello and nice to hear from you. I have live in Canada and have been to Alfriston many times. I met a cousin in the George Inn about 12 years ago and we are still in touch. My ancestor, William Haryett, worked for Henry Pagden and lived at Tile Barn Cottage. I have several books by Johnny Johnstone on Alfriston and found the one written by Mrs. Winstanley. I read about the horse in one of them.

I would be interested in learning a bit more about the history of Frog Firle Farm and the Pagden years.

Dave

Hi
I just found your note on Henry Pagden. He was my gggg uncle on my mothers side, or at least I think it is four or maybe five times back. I found some info in a book in Alfriston on Frog Firle Farm, the first White Horse at Litlington and the bell at St Andrews Alfriston (Ade). Do you know if it is true that a Pagden and a Bartram put the fist White Horse on the hillside at Litlington? It is recorded at Lewes Museum that the second was put up by the Ades. I have some more info on Pagdens if any one wants to know.
Harriott/Harriett/Harriet Surname

I've been trying to find any information regarding my African American Grandfather and Great-Grandfather. Both were named William. The story I heard as a kid was that there were 2 brothers that left South Carolina and went North. One was my Grandfather William and the other was his brother Thomas. The mother's name was Lucy or Louise Cole. That information I have from the death certificate and the marriage certificate. My grandfather was born approximately 1908 in South Carolina and he died in 1944 in New Jersey. I'm not sure as to when the surname changed, on the marriage and death certificate it's Harriett. On my Uncle birth certificate is Harriet. And my mother's maiden name is Harriott. I would appreciate any information at all. I can reached at cwharriott@aol.com

my father, Derrick Harriott of Jamaica West Indies has a brother name Donald Harriott who lived in Manhattan, New York, USA. Last I saw him was in the 1980s. He had a mental sickness. He lived with his mother, Victoria Powell-Harriott who became too elderly to take care of him. No one in the Harriott family ever mentioned what happened of him. I would have to inquire. p.s. Donald was born in Jamaica. Maybe you can contact Derrick C. Harriott in Kingston Jamaica in confidentially.

Just came across this message. Are you aware that there is a descendant line from John Wolfe and Sarah White living in Hampshire, in England ? They set out to emigrate to Canada in the 1860s, but stopped off at Liverpool and settled there, before branching-out. John Wolfe's father, William, was brother to my gt-gt-grandfather, Denis.

Yes, same parents, John and Sarah White, and same six children. John Alfred and Harriet Helena were twins(b.1874); the English line I know about is descended from John Alfred. A younger member of that family was researching her Wolfes a few years ago(possibly for school?), but I haven't had any contact in a long time. I do have an address somewhere, but no e-mail or phone no.
Which branch,of the six above,is your connection ?
John(b. 1818/md.to Sarah 1854; settled in Liverpool instead of sailing on to Canada, as intended)was one of a family of eight, parents William Wolfe(c.1790-1845) and Mary Callan, md. in Kells, 1815. Denis(c.1789-1864), my gr-gr-grandfather, was William's brother.
