Rev Joseph Harrison (1779-1848) of Stockport, England
I am seeking information on the Harrison Family of Stockport.

Rev Joseph Harrison (1779-1848) was an Independent/Baptist minister, schoolmaster and Radical Reformer who found fame between 1818-1823 as an orator agitating for Parliamentary Reform and universal suffrage.

Joseph was the son of a congregational minister and grew up in Essex and Cambridgeshire before moving to Skipton, Yorkshire in 1790.

He was married to Sally Hanson (born c1780 Halifax, Yorkshire) and they had 7 children:

- Peter Harrison, b. c1805, ? d. 1849 aboard SS Mooltan headed for Otago, NZ. (married to 1. Hannah Jones. 2. Harriet ?. 3. Martha Rix?)
- Joseph Harrison, b. 1806, Henham, Essex d. 1888, St Louis, Missouri, USA. (married to Ellen Jarman)
- Massah Harrison, b. 1810, Henham, Essex d. 1881, Bolton, Lancashire. (married to Ann Mallelieu)
- Nathan Harrison, b. 1810, Henham, Essex d. 1875, Bradford near Manchester. (married to Mary Pilling)
- Betsey Harrison (Smith), b. 1812, Saddleworth, Yorkshire d. 1884 Stockport, Cheshire. (married to William Smith)
- Thomas Harrison, b. 1815, Glossop, Derbyshire d. 1872 Stockport, Cheshire. (married to Elizabeth Collier)
- Edward Harrison, b. c1818, d. Manchester 1836.

His sons Joseph and Peter were ivory turners in the 1830s & 1840s. Massah was an umbrella manufacturer and Peter made umbrella parts from ivory.

Rev Joseph Harrison was minister at the Henham Independent Chapel, Essex (c1805 - 1810) and Littlemoor Independent Chapel, Glossop (c1812-1817.) He was expelled from Littlemoor around 1817 for improper conduct. Gossip circulated that he was "taking liberties with his female students" but he refuted this.

He opened the Windmill Street Chapel in Stockport (c1817) and joined the Radical Reformers who were agitating for Parliamentary Reform and universal suffrage. It was here that he befriended the organisers of the "1817 March of the Blanketeers" - Bagguley, Johnston and Drummond.

Joseph Harrison known commonly as Parson Harrison was gaoled for three and a half years for sedition in 1820 for his part in speeches made at a Reform meeting at Sandy Brow, Stockport alongside the Baronet Sir Charles Wolseley.

The Stockport constables William Birch and Nathaniel Pass were sent out to affect his arrest but he had already fled to London. His arrest took place on the hustings at Smithfield in July, 1819 alongside his fellow Reformers Henry Hunt and Arthur Thistlewood. On his return to Stockport he was detained at Birch's house while the constable sought advice from the magistrate. On his return, Birch was surrounded by the mob and shot in the chest.

A month later Henry Hunt would lead the infamous Peterloo Meeting at Manchester where eleven Reformers died and hundreds were injured by the mounted yeomanry. Harrison turned up late to the meeting but witnessed the carnage unleashed by the government forces.

Thistlewood was executed in 1820 for organising the Cato Street conspiracy, a plot to assasinate the Cabinet ministers. Joseph Harrison played no part in this and advocated peaceful means to bring about change.

Joseph Harrison was released from Chester Castle prison in 1823 where he returned to his family in Stockport and continued his chapel and school. He would later play a role in the Chartist agitation of the 1840s.

A year before his death he left the Baptist Church and joined the Church of Christ after witnessing the American preacher Alexander Campbell speak in Manchester. Some members of the congregation left with him and founded the Mount Street Chapel in Stockport.

Joseph's father also named Joseph (1749-1821) was born at Swinden, Yorkshire. He was a Congregational Minister and held ministries in Clavering, Foulmire, Harston, Skipton, Bingley, Bury and Allerton. He declared himself a disciple of the whig - Charles James Fox.

His grandfather - Edward (c1716-1789), a native of Swinden, Yorkshire was minister at Greenacres Chapel near Saddleworth and later moved back to Swinden near Skipton where he died in 1789.

I am descended from Joseph's son, Thomas (1815-1872) who took over the school after his death.

I'd be happy to share and exchange information with descendents or researchers.

Please send me an email :-)

harrisongensearch@gmail.com

Thank you

Anthony Y

John & Michael Harrison..KY~TN~MO~ARK

I have a brick wall in trying to find the parents of John Harrison, b. 1811 KY or 1815 MO, I have found him in census..1840 Ripley Co MO, 1850 Shannon Co MO, 1860 Randolph Co Ark; marriages.. 1837 Washington Co MO and 1862 Randolph Co Ark; Land record 1861 Randolph Co Ark. I'm not finding anything on him prior to 1837 and after 1862.....

Family stories tell related to the President's Harrison, but I haven't found a connection in researching them. I've searched the early Harrison families to MO, land records, military, books (Histories and Long Grey Trail); where available, bible records, court records; message boards; google, yahoo and bing searched. I've not been able to find any Wills or probate records that name these two men.....

I've researched the "name game"..John's children's names..George W., Michael, William H, David, Sarah, Charity, Belvoritta and Mary. There is a Michael & Sarah Harrison that were his neighbors in 1840 & 1850, they name a daughter Belvoritta and she names a daughter Charity. I've researched Michael (b 1792/95 in TN) (or Micajah) and am not finding much on him before he marries in 1837 Washington Co MO. No previous marriage records, so unable to prove he's John's father. I rather think older brother.

Am I missing something??? Am I the only one researching this Harrison family from Missouri and Arkansas? Any help would be appreciated.

Ludwell Harrison, who married Thomas Powell died by 1815 in VA. I have no clue where they are buried. All I know is her father was named John Harrison as per the marriage bond in 1792 and that he was deceased at that point. I need to locate this couple as they may be parents of my GG grandfather John Powell who was born in VA about 1809. It is a stretch, but "Who Do You Think You Are?" has not shown up to help me.

No reason to believe there are children beyond eastern VA/NC. Halifax County NC would be close, but It is definitely Ludwell Harrison (Orphan) on the record.

Looking for information on Wyatt and Frances Harrison, both born Virginia: Wyatt was born 1800-1804, Frances anyplace from 1806-1816--her age doesn't change on some censuses.

In 1850, they're in Rockbridge, VA (next door to Frances Harrison, age 65, possibly Wyatt's mother), in 1860 Monroe Co., MO, and in 1870 in Cooke Co. TX, living with their son James and his family. I have not been able to locate Wyatt or James after 1870. James's daughter Sarah Minnie Harrison married Charles Wesley Selby in Montague Co., TX in 1881.

There is a marriage of a Wiatt Harrison and Frances Moss in Nelson VA in 1831--this would fit this couple because their first child, Sarah, was born 1832.

George W Harrison (b. abt 1838, Va)

George W Harrison is my gg-grandfather. He's been my research "brick wall" for over 15 years. The earliest mention I have found of him is his marriage in Frederick County in Feb 1860 to Mary Jane Hensey. The next mention is from the 1860 US Census where he and Mary are shown living with Mary's brother John R. Hensey in Southern District, Loudoun County, VA. His place of birth is given as Virginia.
John Hensey married a Harriet Ann Harrison (b. 1830). I do not know if George W Harrison and Harriet A Harrison were related.

George and Mary moved to Petersville section of Frederick County, Maryland soon after the Civil War and remained there until the mid to late 1880's when they moved to Middletown, Butler County, Ohio.

The 1870 US Census shows an Ellender (Eleanor) Harrison (b. 1810) living with George and his family. I don't know if this was his mother, an aunt, a sibling or other relation.

The earliest documentation I have on the Hensey family is from the 1850 US Census which shows them living in Prince William County, Virginia.

If anyone's has come across these families during their own research I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks.

Harold Harrison
I have conflicting birthdates on him...could be anywhere from 1750 to 1776. He lived mostly in Warren/Edmonson counties in KY, and is believed to have been born in VA or NC. He married Sarah Webb (daughter of Martin). Family lore has it that he had some connection with the presidential family of Harrisons. I have been trying to find a link, but no luck.

I looked at the census record you have on Jeremiah Harrison. I saw a large family, but a question comes up about Hannah. The age difference is great, so look into this further. She may be a daughter or his wife.

Also, I scrolled down inthe census and found another couple of Harrisons: Robert Harrison age 16 and sister/wife Amanul Harrison age 12.

Just something I do, is browse near by pages for others that could be related. If they are on a page before or after, they are probably related and living down the street.

Harrison is her maiden name. I have a marriage record link showing
Mary Harrison m. William Case on 14 Jan 1878 in Harrison County, Indiana.

On the 1880 census, she was listed as Mary Case, wife to William Case. Their were two children on this census which falls into my line.

I simply cannot find anything on Mary Harrison prior to her marriage. I did find one Mary Harrison (appears to be married name) listed as daughter of man with last name of Rawlings - just I've ruled that out as I found a marriage record that seems to relate to this message.
