Hello again Marjorie, i'm so glad i finaly found your reply, i'm not quite used to this yet :). I'm hoping to go to Ireland in July i've always longed to go there and i feel now is the time. I'm entrigued to find out as much as i can about our past, my gran did alot of work before she passed and my dad has that now. I'm forever asking questions so to tell you the truth i'm not sure where to start. I've started my own family tree and i want to make sure anything and everything i have is correct, i've only gotten as far back as James 3rd, the diary writer. I have some dates but not all. Also i was wondering if you knew if great uncles Hugh's children, Roy, Christina and Leonard knew there were more than 4 brothers. I came across his headstone on a google search and noticed my grandads name wasn't there as a brother. I have an e-mail address, it's juliaharshaw2002@yahoo.com.au if you could reply to me there. I have no idea how long it'll take me to find my msg on ancestry :). Thankyou sooo much for your reply and i hope to hear from you soon. I'd be lovely to meet you, hopefully we'll meet in Northern Ireland this year.

Kindest Regards
Julia x

Hello Haley and Marjorie,

Again, I see your post is quite old, but I have some information on the Harshaw/Freeland family. Augusta Freeland Harshaw was a Canadian author, and I am hoping we might be able to exchange some facts. I work with The Canadian Writing Research Collaboratory, and am compiling a biographical profile on Ms. Harshaw.

If you'd like to touch base, please email me at ceww@sfu.ca

Thanks,
Linnea McNally

William Frederic Morlan married Arizona Wise. Dau listed as Pearl who married Raymond Harshaw. William Frederic is one of the sons of my gggrandfather, John Marion Morlan 1834-1915. I have a couple of pictures of him. He was Sargeant in Company E, in the 47th Regiment of the Ohio Vol Infantry. Sworn and and witnessed Jan 16, 1865. promoted to Paymaster. Shot and injured in the battle of Vicksburg. I have no info on Howard or Pearl, other than they were listed as part of the family. My mother provided me with the Harshaw name.

I have a Harshaw ancestor that is a brick wall from Tennessee as well - Daniel Harshaw b abt 1820 TN.

I have found Harshaws in Sumner Co TN that I could not tie mine too, but maybe you can? I believe it was Hugh Harshaw and Jane Curry, md Sumner Co TN in the earl 1820s. Hugh died before 1850, but Jane lived a little longer.

They had children:
Benjamin b 1825
James b 1827
Elvyra b 1830
Thomas b 1835
Van Buren b 1836
Margaret b 1842
Mary b 1844
John b 1846

I believe a couple of the boys fought in the civil war for the North. So you might find some info there...

My Harshaws were in Madison Co TN in 1850, 1860. Then MO, AR late 1880s and early 1900s.

Please let me know if you find anything.

Good luck!

-Dennis Holland

Pearl Harshaw was my great-aunt by marriage to my grandfather's brother John Raymond Harshaw. I've done significant research into the Harshaw/McAtee side of the family but have not ventured far from direct lines so I don't have much information on Pearl's family.

As for the Harshaw's, John Raymond's father was also John (1875-1953) and his mother was Melvina McAtee. I have traced the McAtee's back to the 1650's but, unfortunately, I've run into a dead end in the Harshaw line. I believe my GG-Grandfather (also John Harshaw) was born in Ireland around 1844-45 and it seems he may have passed away the same year his son was born.

Pearl is buried in Woodlawn Memorial Park in DeSoto, Missouri, along with her husband John.

If you'd like to know more, feel free to contact me at any time. Good luck on your search!

Hello- I am looking for information on my grandmother - Emma Harshaw (Mapp- married Tom Mapp from Geogia in Tenn, 1927). I see Malissa Harshaw was her mother from N.Carolina, but don't know who her father is. Any help would be great.

Thank you very much! I have spent this morning searching, as well as contacting the town historian of Argyle, NY. What an interesting story this is. I have been fascinated so far, and can't believe that there is so much information on this. It's a genealogy treasure trove. Do you know where I can find the passanger lists for the 2 ships that Dr. Clark brought over?

Thank you!!!
Katie

Hello, Katie. The Harsha/Harshaws are one family. The name originated in Northern England.

Your family came from Ballybay in County Monaghan. You will find more information if you look for the Cahan migration. Your ancester was one who was persecuted by the government. He was called for jury duty several times and required to kiss the Bible as he was sworn in. This was against his religion. When he refused, he was thrown in jail. Sounds like a good reason for someone to leave.

Hope you find this interesting.

Marjorie,
This original post was written 10 years ago, but I hope that you somehow come across this. I have traced my tree to Elder James Harsha from Monaghan, Ireland. He came over with his son John to Argyle NY in the 1700's. I was wondering if you could tell me about the Harsha/Harshaw name and where he was from in Ireland. I would like any info that I can get.
Thank you
Katie treehugger1895@gmail.com

I haven't found anything on Daniel Harshaw's parents. I did find a Hugh Harshaw living in Sumner Co TN in the 1840 census. I think he is a good candidate but can't tell for sure.

Another researcher has published that Rebecca Emerson's parents were John Emerson and Peggy Boals. Here's a link to the site giving some good info on her line.

http://tn-roots.com/tncrockett/family/emison.html

However, beware that this person has our Daniel Harshaw in Hickory Plains AR by 1857. She has confused our Daniel with another one. Our Daniel was still in TN in the 1860 census. I have found many census records that supports much of what she lists about the Emersons though. For example, it appears that John Emerson (Rebecca Emerson's brother) is living next door to James E Harshaw in the 1880 white co AR census.

Good to hear from you and please let me know if you find anything new.

-Dennis

Looking at this brought me to take another look at some of the census records. I found that James E Harshaw was living next door to John Emerson (b/o Rebecca Emerson) in the 1880 AR census.

I found several Emersons which at first glance appeared to be the brothers of Rebecca Emerson in AR in 1870.

Have you found this report on the web?

http://tn-roots.com/tncrockett/family/emison.html

It's posted by another Emerson researcher. Daniel Harshaw and Rebecca Emerson (parents of James E Harshaw) cam be found in this report.

Not sure how much of this you have learned since your original posting...

If you have any corrections or additions please let me know.

Thanks,
Dennis

Not sure if you are still out there, but I can help you if you are still stuck.

James E Harshaw's parents were Daniel Harshaw b abt 1816 TN or Ireland and Rebecca Emerson b abt 1825 Madison Co, TN.

Daniel Harshaw and Rebecca Emerson married Madison Co TN Mar 4, 1850. A loose marriage bond from Madison Co TN lists John Emerson as a witness.

Rebecca Emerson is said to have been the daughter of John Emerson (born in Ireland) and Margaret "Peggy" Boals from NC.

James E Harshaw had 4 brothers - Elijah and Elisha - twins b abt 1852, John H Harshaw b abt 1855, and William H Harshaw b abt 1857.

James had 1 sister - Susannah Harshaw b abt 1853- md William M Holland 1871 in Scott Co MO

The family started out in Madison Co TN and can be found there in the 1850 and 1860 Madison Co TN census records. Unexplainably, it appears James E Harshaw is listed as "David" on the 1860 Madison Co TN census, but appears as James every time after.

They can be found in the 1870 Scott Co MO census in which Daniel is missing - presumably dead at this time.

Rebecca (Emerson) Harshaw can be found living with son John H Harshaw in the 1880 Crockett Co TN census. William H Harshaw can be found in the 1880 Sumner Co TN census.

William stayed in Sumner Co TN where he died in 1907.

I'm not sure where Elijah was in 1880, but as you probably know, James E Harshaw was in White Co AR at this time already married to Helena.

By 1900, John H Harshaw, James E Harshaw, and Elijah Harshaw were living in AR. Their sister Susannah was still living in Scott Co MO. She died in adjoining Pemiscot Co MO in 1921.

Elijah died in Oklahoma I think after 1920.

I'm not sure when John H Harshaw died. He was living in Pope Co AR up until 1930. His wife, Harriet L died there in 1937.

I hope you find this useful.

If you have any corrections or additions I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks,
Dennis

Abram Harshaw's wife Annie

Does anyone know whether Abram Harshaw's wife was Ann Hogan or Annie Bradshaw? More people seem to say that it's Annie Bradshaw.

I have passages from two books that give conflicting evidence. The book titled "The Heritage of Burke County" by the Burke County Historical Society claims that he married Annie Bradshaw. But another book titled "Our Heritage, the People of Cherokee County, North Carolina, 1540-1955" by Margaret Walker Freel claims that Ann Hogan is Abram Harshaw's wife.

I have no idea which source to believe. Can anyone help me in this matter?
